The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices for other non-profit groups. From the Editor We do not like to use these pages to whine and complain, preferring always to build up, rather than tear down, but this time we have something to say. While we were compiling the James Parris family for this issue, we needed to consult a book donated to the society by Bernie Cooper, a JCGS member from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. That book contains pedigree charts and family group records of Bernie's families, including the Ensley and Parris connections. That book was not to be found on our shelves, and this marks '""* the second time that this has happened. We are not happy with that circumstance. To make lemonade from _V that sour lemon, it did give us a chance to communicate with new JCGS member Hugh Marshall (and, regrettably, to interrupt his Saturday-morning pancake breakfast with his small children), and that was a pleasant conversation. Maybe we can prevail on the better nature of someone to return that book; or maybe we can beg Bernie for another copy. Not good. On a happier note, look inside your journal for a description of Shoal Creek Baptist Church; for an old tax list from the Shoal Creek- Oconaluftee community; for the first part of a census of the Plott Cemetery in Haywood County's Saunook community; for family information on Fullbright and Parris; for more official records from Jackson County; and finally, for our usual fine old photographs. Fall. The best time of year. Football, apples, clear days, cool nights, genealogy. Unbeatable in any of those combinations. We were privileged to attend this celebration in July. We present the following from the program of that day, and add to it a slightly edited reminiscence of one of the church members.] O S h o a l C r e e k B a p t i s t C h u r c h 1 8 2 8 - 2 0 0 3 I n the early years of the nineteenth century this area of North Carolina was very sparsely settled, with homes usually several miles apart. The staunch men and women who lived here were deeply religious, God-fearing people. They realized the need for a building in which to assemble for worship; thus, July 26, 1828, the church 'which we now know as Shoal Creek Baptist Church came into being. The United or Missionary Baptist Church, to be known as Mount Zion, was established at Yellow Hill in what is now Cherokee, NC. At that time, Yellow Hill was a part of Haywood County, later becoming Swain County. This church with forty-three original members was constituted by a presbytery of three men: Humphrey Posey, Adam Corn, and Stephen White. Irf April of 1836, the Mount Zion Church divided, creating the Oconalufty and Shoal Creek Churches with Shoal Creek retaining 'the keys and records. The first Shoal Creek Church building, located near the home of Albert Keener at what is now the entrance to Camp Creek Road, was destroyed by fire on October 19, 1874. Brother Samuel Beck gave the use of his home for a meeting place until a new building could be completed. On August 7, 1875, a committee was appointed to select a location and plan to build a new church. The new building, located on property in the Jerry Field near Qualla School, was constructed on land granted by Sarah Jane Thomas for this one purpose. This building was used until December. 1915. In January, 1916, the building committee was instructed to sell the old building for material with which to finish the new church. 141 Journeys Through Jackson September - October 2003 KJ Pastors of Shoal Creek Baptist Church 1828-32 1832-34 1834-37 1837-40 1840-47 1847-54 1854-60 1860-68 1868-70 1870-80 1880-82 1882-84 1884-85 1885-87 1887-88 1888-89 1889-91 1891-93 1893-95 Adam Corn Stephen White George Colon David Elders S. Gibbs W.L. Bradley C.F. Owen O.P. Williams T.F. Arrington T.F. Deitz During the early years, meetings were held once a month, usually including both Saturday and Sunday servicesi Later, services were held on the second and fourth Sundays. Pastors received only the money taken after each service. However, "poundings" were popular during which members of the congregation would surprise the pastor with gifts of food including canned goods, meats, vegetables, and staple items. Shoal Creek Baptist Church first called a full-time pastor in 1960, at which time the church also voted to pay a set salary. The earliest deacons of Shoal Creek Baptist Church included Samuel Sherrill, John Hyde, Stephen Beck, John Nations, Nathan Hyatt, Elijah Brown, Daniel Lester, John B. Gibson, Nimrod Childers, H. L. Moodey, A.J. Galloway, J. B. Hoyle, CM. Fisher, and W. V. Farley. It is- perhaps unique to Shoal Creek history that John B. Gibson's great-grandson Gene currently serves as deacon; Nimrod Childers's great-granddaughter Jean Childers is currently a member of the church. KJ KJ 142 Journeys Through Jackson September - October 2003 Memories of Gene Gibson at Shoal Creek Baptist Church The earliest memory that I have of attending the Shoal Creek Baptist Church was in the wood - framed, weather-boarded, and sealed structure built in 1918 and served until 1956, when the congregation entered the present block-and-brick building currently used. The Great Depression, as it was known, had the whole United States under siege, and the church suffered financially, along with the business world. Money was scarce, and paying jobs both inside and outside the Shoal Creek community were almost non-existent. Trusting almighty God and farming for a livelihood was the only way to go. Automobiles were few, roads were almost primitive, so walking and taking near cuts through fields and woods during the winter months "wjere the best way to church. J.L. Rogers (1927 - 1937) was the first fulltime, half-time pastor that I can remember. Second and fourth Sundays were his schedule, but during the winter months, weather sometimes didn't permit him to travel from Haywood County near Lake Logan to Shoal Creek. There was no s e t salary, only the "hat" collection was taken. No reflection on the church members, but the collections were mostly coins, and if any bills were given they were mostly of the $1.00 dimension. With gasoline prices $.18 - $.20 per gallon, I've heard my Dad say that it was doubtful if the collection bought his gasoline .at times. He was a spirit -.filled, ingenious man who did carpentry work, cut logs and wood, and farmed to make ends meet. At this time the Methodist Church next door was very active, with preaching services held on the 1st and 3rd Sundays. So the two denominations shared their preaching services with each othen- Since most farmed for a living, had no telephone or television and only a few battery-operated radios, the local church became the center of community activities, a heritage almost lost today. It was not uncommon for members and non-members alike to gather at the church shortly after 9:00 A.M. for Sunday School that started at 10, to catch up on the current news. My first remembrance was that the building had .a belfry or bell tower out front with doors, entering the bell tower from each side.- There was no straight-through entrance. The sanctuary was one large room, and to separate the different classes for Sunday School, wires were stretched from side to side and curtains hung. They separated only visual contact. 143 Journeys Through Jackson September - October 2003 The first seats or benches were a one-board plank possibly 14 inches wide and a one-board plank back rest. Straight-horizontal, straight-vertical, no contour to fit the legs or back. There was no danger of anyone dozing or sleeping, because one couldn't get that comfortable. I was janitor and fire builder during the winter of 1943-1944, building a fire in the sanctuary first and in two stoves in two classrooms that were built around 1937 on the back behind the pulpit. Arriving no later than 8:45-9:00 A.M., I had time to sweep the church while the fires heated the building. The janitor's salary was $.25 per Sunday. The framed building was a perfect place for wasps in winter. Each Sunday after the fires were built, the wasps came to life and sometimes were very annoying to both the preacher and the congregation. That is unknown today in our modern buildings with central heating units. Lighting for revival meetings was provided with kerosene oil lamps set on special shelves along the outside walls. (There was no electricity at this time.) In 1946 the building was wired and electric lights were installed. In 1948-1949 two classrooms were added on the front, and the existing doors of the belfry became classrooms doors, while a double door was placed in the front to enter straight in. Once a year a "pounding" was given the pastor. Since almost everyone farmed, people had plenty of non-perishables and canned goods to share. Corn, corn meal, Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes, canned beans or tomatoes, and even a gallon of homemade molasses would show up. This was before insecticides were used, and honey bees were abundant, so even a jar of honey could be seen at these poundings. Each Thanksgiving the same procedure was used to send food to the orphanage at Thomasville, later named the N.C. Baptist Children's Home. I remember one Thanksgiving my Dad and Mr. Ham Hoyle took the team and wagon and picked up the items for the orphanage. One non-Christian lady who never attended church waved for them to pick up some canned beans. We held our 150th anniversary celebration inl978 and our 175th anniversary in 2003. I would like to know that the 200th anniversary would be held in 2028, but at 76 years of age, I have small hope of attending. In my time, there have been 20 part-time and full-time pastors. All were good, but some were better. When I think of the song "Church in the Wildwood," there is no church as dear to me as the ones I remember at "The Jerry Old Field," past and present. EDITH IRENE1 1 FULLBRIGHT (SAMUAL ROSCOE10, DANIEL MONROE9, ELI8, BARNETT7, JACOB6, JOHN WILHELM5 VOLPRECHT, HANS HIOB4, DANIEL NIKOLAUS3, SIMON2, HANS1) was b o m April 19, 1908 in Cullowhee, Jackson County, North Carolina, USA, and died June 04, 1989 in Hickory, Catawaba County, North Carolina, USA. She married PAUL THOMAS HAMILTON September 25, 1930 in Clayton, Rabun County, Georgia, USA. He was bom August 28, 1909 in Robbinsville, Graham County, North Carolina, USA, and died September 03,1990 in Hickory, Catawaba County, North Carolina, USA. Edith was the "care-taker" for her family . She cared for her immediate family as well as those of her maternal family as they needed her . She was a strong spiritual leader as well as a gentle loving person. She always put others before herself and seldom complained even though she faced many health problems in her own life. She was an accomplished seamstress and homemaker. Following her move from Cullowhee to Hickory in 1960, she had more time for herself, but again looked for someone to help. She kept a neighbors child, Paul Childers, whom we called "Little" Paul, from the time he was about six months old until his parents moved to Durham. They became part of our extended family and continue to be so. She taught a ladies Bible class at Highland Baptist Church for many years until her health forced her to give it up. The ladies in her class were faithful and loyal to her during her fight with cancer. Following her death, they still continued to "look after her little girl" and helped to fill the void left by her home going. Paul Hamilton was raised by brothers and sisters following the death of both parents before he was three years old. Followed older brother Devrohe into logging camps and helped with the cooking. Learned the carpentry trade from his wife's, Edith, father. He was basically self taught. He learned to read blueprints and later on worked for major construction companies including J.A. Jones on the Oak Ridge project in Tennessee. He worked as director of maintenance for Western Carolina College at Cullowhee for many years. Later went to work for L. B. Gallimore out of Greensboro where he remained until he retired at the age of sixty-five. He was a master builder and took great pride in his work as well as any construction project that he was in charge of. 156 KJ \J Journeys Through Jackson September - October 2003 C h i l d o f EDITH FULLBRIGHT a n d PAUL HAMILTON i s: i. EUCELLA PAULINE12 HAMILTON, b. February 22, 1938, Cullowhee, Jackson County, North Carolina, USA. Eucella graduated from Cullowhee High School in 1956 and from Western Carolina College in 1960. Majored in Music Education with a concentration in piano and voice. Moved to Hickory, North Carolina in 1960 and taught in the junior high schools there for thirty years, retiring in June of 1990. Did graduate work at UNC-Chapel Hill with Lara Hoggard in choral music as well as several other outstanding choral directors: Waring,' Shaw, Luboff. Served as organist for Highland Baptist Church for twenty-eight years as well as several years as choir director in the absence of a full time minister of music. Went to Mountain Grove Baptist Church as their minister of music in August, 1991, and is still working there. 6 2 . MARY KATHLEEN1 1 FULLBRIGHT (SAMUAL ROSCOE10, DANIEL MONROE*, ELI8, BARNETT7, JACOB6, JOHN WILHELM5 VOLPRECHT, HANS HIOB4, DANIEL NIKOLAUS3, SIMON2, HANS1) was b om November 15,1913 in Speedwell, Jackson County, North Carolina, USA, and died June 12,2000 in Matthews, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA. She married FRANCIS FLOYD (PAYNE) JONES December 23, 1940 in Cullowhee Baptist Church, Cullowhee, Jackson County, North Carolina, USA, son of JOHN JONES and ARDONA BROOKS. He was bom March 01,1907 in Addie, Jackson County, North Carolina, USA, and died October 25, 1972 in Sylva, Jackson County, North Carolina, USA. Francis Floyd Jones was known by the nickname of Payne to almost everyone. He got the name by following one of the train engineers around who was named Payne. The locals used to say there goes Payne "and Little Payne. In his early years he worked as a logger when the Balsam Mountains were being logged for the Balsam Firs for use in making airplanes. He would walk from his home in Addie, Jackson County, North Carolina to the top of the Balsam Mountains, a distance of about 10 to 15 miles. In the evening after the shift was over the loggers took the easy way home and road the last logs down the flume to the mill. He was just months shy of being too old to be drafted into the Second World War when his notice came that he was being drafted into the Navy. He did his basic training at Port Deposit near Havre de Grace, Maryland. The best men of each class would be offered a tour of duty on President Roosevelt's Yacht. Francis was offered such a tour. He turned it down because he also know that the next tour of duty was to the front lines. He was posted to the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida. When he arrived the new recruits were marshaled by an old Chief Petty Officer and marched down to the beach where they were assigned to swim out to PBYs that were being brought into the station for repair and attach a cable to allow the planes to be brought into shore. He ask how many of the group could swim. Everyone but Francis said that they could. (A sailor had to pass a swimming test in basic training.) The Chief walked down to him as ask "Sailor you can't swim?" He replied "NO Sir!" The Chief said "See that rock? Go sit on it." He did while everyone else went into the cold water of the James river to retrieve the planes. This went on for over a week. Each morning the same question and same answer. Each day the seat on the same rock. Finally the 157 Journeys Through Jackson September - October 2003 Chief sent Francis to the shop, with orders to straighten it out, which was like throwing Br'er Rabbit into the Briar Patch! According to my father that shop was in such a mess it was a wonder that anyone could find anything to ever repair a plane. He got it organized and running smoothly. \ When he was released from service he has a staff of 8 to 10 men under him. Several of them out ranked him. While stationed in Jacksonville, he took Kathleen to the boardwalk on Sunday. They had only five dollars between them for the day. However my Father was one of the luckiest men around. He played bingo and other games. When they came home that night not only had he paid for everything that they wanted to do that day but had won a full ham and had $50 in his pocket as well. He was mechanical. If it had moving parts he could fix it. We were in Colorado on vacation and had just left a small town about 2 or 3 in the afternoon. We were about 15 miles outside of town in the middle of nowhere. We started to lose power and smell gas. Daddy pulled off to the side of the road and looked under the hood of the car. The glass part of the gas pump and filter had broken. He pulled out his tool kit, took the broken glass part off, hooked the gas line back together and taped it with electricians tape. We were thus able to restart the car and drive back into town for repairs. C h i l d o f MARY FULLBRIGHT a n d FRANCIS JONES is: i. DANNY FLOYD12 JONES, b. February 24, 1948, Sylva, Jackson County, North Carolina, USA. KJ Bom in C. J. Harris Hospital on top of Courthouse Hill in Sylva, Jackson County, North Carolina. Raised in Cullowhee, North Carolina. First home was on part of the old Painter Home place. It was a small five-room house with a porch on the front, white clapboard on the shoulder of a hill. There was a large garden plot next to the house. Tallie and Byrd Fulbright's home was one house down the lane. Other relatives lived in the nearby houses. In the kitchen of my grandmothers house, by the sink, hung a metal dipper. Water has never tasted as good or as cold from anything else. There was a porch on two sides of the house and it seemed that there were rocking chairs everywhere. Everybody had one. I even had my own little red chair. We lived in the little house until I turned five when we were to build on top of the hill but the FHA would not approve a loan because of the location of the road into the lot. Daddy bought a lot from Frank Brown Sr. on the western edge of the college campus above the Brown Farm. We built a six room two bath brick house with a full basement on the lot. Over the years Daddy purchased additional pieces of land from Mr. Brown until we had over an acre of land. We lived in the little house behind my grandmother's until the new house was finished. We moved into the new house the fall that I started the first grade. My grandmother died of cancer the following February 5, 1955. Was accepted to Western Carolina University at Cullowhee, North Carolina. Graduated class of 1970 in Business Administration with major in Management Accepted into the MBA Program at the University of Georgia in Athens Georgia. Graduated class of 1972. We continue in this issue with the editor's own work on the extensive Parris family. The fourth segment will be one of the largest families, with many JCGS members descended here.] James Parris, fourth of the children of David and Mary Morrow Parris, was born in South Carolina 16 Aug 1805, according to the Bible record. He married Amy McEntire, one of the younger daughters of James and (probably) Lucretia Gregory McEntire of Rutherford County. James would be one of the Parris men who did not live to see the 1850 census, dying about 1847. He is, according to family tradition, buried in what would later be called Keener Cemetery in Sylva. Amy, who reared the youngest children of a large family with James, was bom 8 Apr 1808 and would live until 20 Jul 1890. She. is supposed to be buried in Old Field Cemetery. According to census records, Amy lived with various ones of her children, and at least once is shown as a midwife. She could remember her grandmother Ellen, and she also said that the Joseph Estes Brooks family moved to the Jasper, Georgia area. (We never met Mrs. Jenkins in person, but telephone conversations with her were a treat. To say she was humorous is a huge understatement.) 04) We also wonder if Ellender were the mother of children.who did not live. Notice the large gaps in birth dates, atypical of the times, but possibly a matter of choice in this family. 05) George Cunningham (possibly went by Brooks) maybe did not survive the Civil War. 163 Journeys Through Jackson September — October 2003 Grandchild #21.. .Mary Ann Parris Ensley Mary Ann Parris (16 May 1 8 2 9 - 1 7 Oct 1906) m. 20 Jul 1845 Wilson Coleman Ensley, j one of the sons of William Ensley and his wife Judith Lackey Ensley. Family stories give his name as Nathan, and say that he died as an infant or small child. 02) Technically, Depina was a Parris descendant but presumably not an Ensley one. She went by Ensley, and credited "Billy" Ensley with raising her, but in the settlement of his estate, she was awarded only half of the settlement given to the other daughters. This is a clear indicator that she was not his child, but we have never found any documentation or heard a family story that would reveal.her true paternity. Since this is the editor's own family, we will not stop looking. The funny story that goes with Depina's statement about "raising" is that she refused to vote. "I married Will Blanton, but Billy Ensley raised me." (Generally, Ensleys here are Republicans, Blantons emphatically the opposite.) 03) The birthdays of the three oldest sons are somewhat in question, but we believe we have them in the correct order. 04) JCGS members descended in this family include Ruth Crawford Shuler, Jean Crawford Brown, Larry Crawford, Betty Blanton Ensley, Harold Ensley, Haven Ensley, Steve Ensley, and Ernestine Shuler Jones, all descended from Depina; Bill Crawford, Roy McClure, and Gene McClure, all descended from Hannah; Lynn Allen, descended from John B.; Rick Frizzell and David Frizzell, descended from William Hamilton; and Louise Brooks Snyder, descended from Elizabeth Jane. We also need to recognize longtime JCGS member Mary Cecil Bryson Patterson, a descendant of Thadeus Coleman. Grandchild.#24...Ruth Parris Ruth Parris was bom 4 Mar 1832. We had never heard of this child until we saw a Bible record that came from the Jane Beard family. (Sefe below.) We believe that she did not live to adulthood. Grandchild #25...Sarah Parris Sarah Parris was bom 17 Nov 1833 (Death certificate would indicate 1832, but that is not possible.) She married Wallace A. Ward. This family lived in the Qualla section of Jackson County, we would presume on or near Camp Creek. There is a family story that Wallace Ward died in Arkansas, but we have yet to confirm that. Sarah died 22 Jun 1921, and is buried in the Ward Cemetery on Camp Creek. She reported 5 of 9 children living in the 1910 census. Their children: Mary Elizabeth Ward (9 Feb 1850-7 Mar 1937) m. Marcus LaFayette Blanton James Washington Ward (16 Nov 1 8 5 2 - 7 Aug 1915) m. (1) Sarah Elizabeth Shehan (2) Margaret LeeAnna Davis William Alexander Ward (10 Dec 1860 - 16 Dec 1913) m. Mary Taylor Martha J. Ward (1864 - ) Amy S.R. Ward (1867 - ) Lillie Mabel Ward 0875 - ) m. Thomas John Stiles Notes on this family: 165 Journeys Through Jackson September - October 2003 01) Is the Amy above also named "Rhodesta"? She was another who supposedly moved to Arkansas. 02) In JCGS, member Barbara Ward Carnes is a descendant through William Alexander, *J and member Gene McGinnis is married to Hilda Buchanan, a Mary Elizabeth descendant. Grandchild #26...Martha Parris Martha Parris (14 Jan 1835 - 12 Mar 1915) married Robert Ensley, brother of Wilson and William above. They first lived in Jackson County, but made their home in Towns County, Georgia, where they are buried in Old Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Their children: Lucius Wilburn Ensley (14 Jan 1859 - ) Dorcas Jane Ensley (26 Jun 1860 - ) William Clingman Ensley (1 Sep 1861-8 Oct 1930) m. Minnie M. Ledford Rufus Wilson Ensley (20 Nov 1862 - ) m. (1) Bonnie May Pierce (2) Dolly Smotherman Cairo Ensley (9 Mar 1882 - ) m. Agnes Sampson Notes on this family: 01) All of the genealogical information courtesy of Harry Ensley, Jr. 02) The oldest two children died very young and are supposed to be buried in Jackson County. 03) The sons in this family moved west, several to Colorado. 04) With the addition of this family, there were 42 Ensley - Parris double first cousins from the James Parris - Amy McEntire, William Ensley - Judith Lackey families. Grandchild #27...William E. Parris William E. Parris was bom 8 Feb 1837 and died in 1862. Harry Ensley Jr. supplied this data. Did this man die in the Civil War? We sometimes confuse him with Samuel's William, who was two months younger, and who was delineated in our last issue. Grandchild #28...James Merrion Parris 166 Journeys Through Jackson September - October 2003 James Merrion Parris (28 Mar 1839 - 24 Oct 1913) m. 20 Jul 1865 in Jackson County Delphia Brunettie HaU. They made their home in the Dillsboro area close to the Parris Cemetery, the land of which they donated for the cemetery, and in which-they rest. Their children: Laura C. Parris (17 Mar 1867-19 May 4892) m. William B. Bryson Allen Sampson Parris (3 Feb 1870 - 3 Oct 1939) m. Lovicia Samantha Green Alfred Monroe Parris (23 May 1873-3 Feb 1963) m. Dora Agnes Collins Jensie Ida Parris (Mar 1878 - ) Dovie Corena Parris (Aug 1880 - ) m. Claude M. Dills Notes on this family: 01) Longtime genealogist and JCGS member Lucy Parris Holcombe descends from this family, through Alfred Monroe. 02) We are not sure why we have so little data on the two youngest daughters. This is probably an oversight rjn our part. 03) James Merrion's given name is the best evidence we have seen that the older David Parris's middle name was "Marion." Grandchild #29...Alfred Washington Parris Alfred Washington Parris (Nov 1839 or 1 8 4 0 - 6 Feb 1935) m. 1 Feb 1859 Louisa Conner. They made their home in the Deep Creek section of Swain County, and are buried there in Morrow Cemetery. Their children: James Robert Parris (11 Jul 1860 - 1936) m. Arminta Kimsey John Alfred Parris (18 Jan 1864 - 26 Sep 1937) m. Emma Abigail Seay Mary Lucinda Parris (18 Jan 1866 - ) m. John Shepherd Celinda Jane Parris (12 Sep 1868 -) m. John B. Vick Laura Elizabeth Parris (15 Nov 1880 - ) m. Dillard Wyries Theodocia Parris (27 May 1883 - 14 Jul 1978) m. James Baxter Laney Notes on this family: 01) The birth year of Alfred Washington is in some doubt. One source gives it as November of 1840, another as February 1840, still another as 1839. Some mistakenly place it in 1835, making him age 99 at his death. The 1900 census is one source. 02) JCGS member James Parris of Iowa is descended from this family, through James Robert. Grandchild #30...Elizabeth Jane Parris Elizabeth Jane Parris (11 Jan 1 8 4 2 - 2 1 Dec 1933) married 24 Apr 1865 in Jackson County James B. Beard. They also lived in the Deep Creek section of Swain County, and they are buried there in Deep Creek Cemetery. Their children: 167 Journeys Through Jackson September - October 2003 Mary Modenia Beard (18 Feb 1866 - 13 Apr 1950) m. James LaFayette Wiggins Thadeus Grant Beard (20 Jul 1868-13 Dec 1949) m. Mollie Shuler James Thomas Beard (20 Jul 1868 - 20 Jul 1868) [^J Amy Emaline Beard (11 May 1869 - 2 Oct 1939) m. James Asbury Keenum Martha M. Beard (8 Feb 1872 - 22 Nov 1949) m. Robert Lee Cline Notes on this family: 01) Mrs. Evelyn Simpson of Norcross, Georgia, shared a Bible record with us some years ago. It listed most of the James Parris - Amy McEntire children. 02) To our knowledge, we do not have a Society member descended in this family, but Mrs. Brenda Reed Sellers of Sylva, a friend for years, descends from Amy Emaline Keenum. Grandchild #31...Lucinda Parris Lucinda Parris (14 Apr 1846 - 15 Apr 1916) married 13 Oct 1869 in Jackson County Benjamin T. Norman. They lived in the Oconaluftee area of Swain County, but are buried in Norman Cemetery at Ochre Hill. Their children: William D. Parris (her son) (ca. 1865 - ) m. (1) Amanda Wiggins (2) Leanah Monteith Lucretia Belle Norman (18 Dec 1872 - 8 Jan 1968) m. (l)William Lee Morris (2) McCracken Ruth Cansadia Norman (Jan 1875 - ) m. George Franklin Felix C. Norman (8 Mar 1876 - 4 Dec 1912) unmarried ? Samuel C. Norman (ca. 1881 - ) Martha Jane Norman (ca. 1882 - ) m. Leonard T. Queen Amy L. Norman (10 Jul 1884 - ) m. Elbert P. Haynes ^j Hattie L. Norman (1888 - ) m. Alconia Brooms Notes on this family: 01) This family is tough to research. We know the burial places for only Lucretia Belle (Deep Creek) and Felix (Norman Cemetery). Martha Jane is buried in Charlotte, according to a family member. 02) Lucinda reported 8 of 10 children living in 1910. There was certainly some time between the birthdates of other children for this. A Family Bible record would solve this. 03) We have no idea what happened to William D., Ruth Cansadia, Samuel, Amy, or Hattie. 04) Samuel's birth year is arbitrary on our part. He is not listed in the family in 1880 or 1900. 05) William D.'s second wife is buried with her Monteith relatives at Lauada. 06) We would welcome further information on any of these children. It is especially important to the editor since Ben Norman was a brother of Abraham, a great-grandfather. 07) While we recognize that a daughter in this family was named Lucretia Belle, we have never seen adequate proof that Lucretia Parris Ensley was also named "Belle." 168 Journeys Through Jackson September -
