Members and non-members are invited to submit genealogical materials for publication, with the understanding that the editor reserves the right to edit these materials for genealogical content, clarity, or taste. The Society assumes no responsibility for errors of fact that may be contained in submissions, and except where noted, the opinions expressed are not those of the editor or of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices from other non-profit groups. From the Editor Fall is beginning to come to the mountains again, with cool breezes and the tree leaves changing their leaves. With the chilly mornings, the smell of wood smoke still can be found here in the mountains. The changing leaves are a testament to the beauty of nature all around us. But, soon people will be looking for activities to tide them over through the long winter months. So get out your genealogy and make plans to work on it this winter. There is always the opportunity to learn more or even break through that “brick wall.” The Society library and volunteers are here to help you in any way that they can. The Society continues to grow, but we are still looking for people who would like to volunteer a few hours at the office. It is an opportunity to interact with others interested in genealogy, learn from others and have a great time. You never know what will turn up at the office. Always remember that our Society is as good as its members. If you have any pictures, stories or tidbits of information that you would like to share with everyone, please feel free to send it to the Society for publication in Journeys. REMEMBER Our Annual Meeting and Covered Dish Supper is coming up in December. More Information will be forthcoming. Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2016 98 JCGS Photo Album The gentleman to the left is William H. Buchanan (1825-1905). He is an ancestor of JCGS member Mary Buchanan Smith, who shared this picture with us. To the bottom left is Doog Wood, Dillard Wood’s father and Hamilton Lafayette Wood. This picture is part of the Wood Collection located at the JCGS office. To the bottom right is a photograph of Abraham Benson Picklesimer. Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2016 99 JCGS Photo Album The picture above is of Dillard Wood’s children. The picture below is of Dillard and Agatha Stephens Wood and family. Also in the bottom picture is Dillard’s mother Emma Page Wood. These are pictures in the Wood collection located in the JCGS office. Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2016 100 JCGS Photo Album The note attached to this photograph says that the women are: woman on the left is Winnie Henson, sister of Coot Wood’s wife; the other lady is identified as Goolie Hooper. The men are unidentified. If you know the identity of these gentlemen, please let us know. Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2016 101 JCGS Photo Album The Grist Mill above was located in the Bull Pen Community. Not many like this left in the area anymore. The young man to the left is Julius Owen sitting on one of the waterfalls of the Tuckasegee River in Little Canada Community. This waterfall is probably underneath one of the several lakes in the area now. The newspaper ad on the following page announces the “New Ritz Theatre.” Hopefully this will bring back pleasant memories for some of us. Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2016 102 JCGS Photo Album Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2016 103 THE TIES THAT BIND ED: This article was given to us by JCGS member, Carol Bryson. She also presented a very informative program on her research. If you have any questions, feel free to contact her. In researching for my two books, Volume One and Two of Glenville and Cashiers From The Records, I was struck by the many family connections to the people from the north end of Jackson County. In so many instances, an ancestor from Webster, Cullowhee, Sylva or some other community from the northern portion of Jackson County, would marry someone from the southern end of the county, and spend the rest of their lives living in some community of Cashiers and Glenville. In some cases the opposite would happen when an ancestor from the southern end would marry someone from the northern end, and would end up living in Caney Fork or Dillsboro, and so on. These matrimonial unions would form the deep roots of family ties that became the web to hold the county together, all through the generations to the present, some one hundred ninety six years later. Even through times in history of political ideas attempting to divide the county into separate counties, the silent realization of family ties has prevailed to keep the county together. In order to recognize these particular couples of the past, who were the first in Jackson County to marry partners from the opposite ends of Jackson County, I would like to list some of them here as an index compiled from my two volumes. Our membership can see more clearly if they connect to these first ancestors who settled in Cashiers and Glenville and vice versa. These ancestors desired to explore the differing geographies of the county, to build and improve roads connecting the regions of the county to the South Carolina line, and to mine, open shops and boarding houses in southern Jackson County. Genealogy information and research records on these couples can be found in the two volumes of Glenville and Cashiers From The Records now on the book shelves of the office of the Jackson County Genealogy Society as a reference book. You can purchase your own copy at GlenvilleCashiersHistory.com or at the City Lights Bookstore in downtown Sylva, NC. ______Name ___________ _____From/To_________ Volume McDonnell“McD” Adams (1859-1913) Cashiers Two Alabama “Allie” Davis (1863-1937) Cullowhee/Cashiers Two Felix Eugene Alley (1873-1957) Whiteside Cove/Webster Two Mary Elvira Hayes (1879-1958) w/o Felix Eugene Alley Rev. Elizabeth Jane Margaret Parker was born October 04, 1816 in Haywood County, North Carolina, and died Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2016 132 March 23, 1899 in Towns County, Georgia. She married James Milford Owen November 05, 1838 in Haywood County, North Carolina, son of John Owen and Lavinia Parker. He was born April 04, 1817 in Haywood County, North Carolina, and died June 01, 1892 in Towns County, Georgia. Notes for James Milford Owen: In the early 1860's James Owen moved his family to Towns County, Georgia where his wife's parents and several of her brothers had moved several years earlier. By 1863 they had settled on Upper Bell Creek where James was registered as a member of the local militia company in District #990. It has been passed down through the family that during the Civil War James and Elizabeth Owen opened their home as a "hospital" for the sick. The itinerant doctor, on his rounds through the mountains, would stop at the Owen home and there attend the sick of the surrounding neighborhood. Appearing before Martin L. Burch Towns County Ordinary, on Aug. 24, 1865, James Owen took the amnesty oath. He was described as having "fair complexion, light hair, blue eyes, 5 ft. 9 in., 48 years of age, and by occupation a farmer." He served as county treasurer from 1864 to 1875 and from 1883 to 1887. Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2016 133 RESEARCH TIP Times have surely changed since I first began researching the records for any and all information I could get about the history of Cashiers and Glenville, and in Jackson County in general, some forty years ago. No longer do you have to sit for hours, straining your eyes to view those not-so-focused words on the dimly-lite screen showing a microfilm of the pages of old newspapers, loaded on a viewer machine. It takes a lot of patience and time to be willing to sit there and scan every issue searching for a specific topic or place. While working on my new Volume Two of Glenville and Cashiers From The Records, I discovered a new website called Newspaper.com that greatly enhanced my ability to search, saving a lot of fruitless time. I was able to verify the details of the many stories handed down through the generations, and see how much of the stories were true and how much they were, shall we say, enhanced. For instance, if there was a shooting Jackson County Journal, Friday, April 5, or a murder, you would think the event would 1918, Page 5 Newspapers.com make the front page news of a nearby newspaper. Newspaper.com has millions of old newspapers from all across the United States in a format that allows you to choose the state, then narrow down to the city nearest the incidence, then choose a newspaper from that city or town, and then narrow down to just a key word such as “murder” or “arrest” to search the resulting newspapers. The key word or words you choose would then be highlighted for you to toggle to and select to view. A year range can also be set, or a specific date can be set in your search. Blue Ridge Enterprise (Highlands, NC) Thurs., April 12, 1883, Page 2 Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2016 134 Newspaper.com News articles are just one of the searches you can do. You can search for birth announcements, marriages, deaths and obituaries. You can enter a person’s name as your search word and set the date range to when that person was born and died, and see if that person was ever written about during their lifetime. I was able to catch letters to the editor from certain historically significant individuals such as Alexander Zachary or John Heywood Alley. Such personally written letters gave much information into their daily lives, and into the simple, yet relative, lives of others in their communities. Using the key search words, “Jackson County” in searches of newspapers printed in Asheville, brought up jewels of information like an 1880 census population report of Jackson County by each township. The old advertisements of local stores in Sylva are fun to find in the pages of the Jackson County Journal such as these shown here. The Blue Ridge Enterprise newspaper printed in Highlands, NC, proved helpful to me for finding out the happenings around Cashiers. Unfortunately, Newspaper.com does not have the Tuckasiege Democrat, at least not yet, but they are adding newspapers all the time.* You can zoom in and out to better read some small type. Once you find something you want to print or download, you can place a block around exactly what you want to print, whether the whole page of just an article. Then choose to print your clipping, save it or share Jackson County Journal it. On the image finished print, you have this nice line Friday, Jan. 3, 1913, Pg. 2 of the newspaper issue date, the page number on which it Newspaper.com appears, the newspaper name and town where the newspaper was printed across the top of the page for using in your endnotes and the current date for future reference. The website is a new site offered by Ancestry.com and if you are a registered member of Ancestry.com or Fold3.com, you may receive a discount to join. * The Jackson County Genealogical Society now has microfilms of the Tuckaseige Democrat. ED: This article was also given to JCGS for publication in JTJ, by Carol M. Bryson. This is a new resource that is available to researchers everywhere. Be sure to browse this collection, you never know what you may find. If you don’t find what you are looking for, always check later, for new newspapers are being added daily.
