  • c u J o u r n e y s T h r o u g h J a c / ( s o n L , 77M: OfficialJournalofthe Jacf(son County genealogical Society, Inc. Vol 11, *Lo. 10 October, 1992 President's Message Goldenrod.. red maples...tops and fodder...pokeberries...frost...fall is here. And with the beginning of the cold weather comes that time of snuggling in for the winter, getting together books and materials for reading and study. This year plan to do some serious genealogical work--get all those scraps of paper organized, put all those photographs in albums, answer letters and inquiries, and—oh, yes, read Jackson County Heritage from cover to cover! It's here! When we began this project some 18 months ago, I had serious doubts that we would ever complete a book. But the long hours of work by so many people have culminated in a volume that brings back to us treasured photographs from the past, articles on more than 1200 Jackson County families, and information that you will find in no other publication. Let me give you some examples of what you will find in Jackson County Heritage. We all know of Governor Dan K. Moore, Congressman David Hall, and Senator Gertrude Dills McKee; their stories are included. But did you know that the first coast-to-coast broadcaster, Douglas Edwards, had Jackson County connections? Read of the determination of a young Laotian refugee to find freedom. Find the stories of immigrants from Sweden, Poland, Austria, Germany—some of them in the 1800's, others in the 1980's. A member of the original Brasstown Carvers from the Campbell Folk School, a Cherokee Indian woodcarver and his multi-talented wife, early Black settlers who came to Jackson County as slaves, some who left Jackson County for "the west," history of churches in the county, reminiscences of long-ago days—all this and much more is in Jackson County Heritage. There will be some extra copies for sale, so if you know someone who didn't order early, pass the word. We do expect these copies to go quickly. Price remains at $50. Thanks again to all who worked so ,.—- diligently to compile this volume, and j a special thanks to those who entrusted their stories and their prized photographs to us. It's been one of the most interesting experiences of my life, and I believe others on the committee feel the same way. Again I would encourage you to submit material to be published in "Journeys Through Jackson." We would especially like to have lineage charts of our members. Also, in the December issue we will publish the membership list and would like to include the families you are researching. If you haven't sent a list of your lines to be included, please do so. Calendar Hovember 12, regular Society meeting, 7i00 p.m.. St. John's. Program details are not yet complete. In that book was information on Sophronia Hoffman Jones Page, who was known locally as "Aunt Phrone Jones" and who, at that time, was ninety-seven years old. Her first husband was Nelson J one 8 and her second, John Henry Page. The following letter was written to Dr. Hoffman by Mrs. Page and is submitted for publication by Jo Ann Smith, of Raleigh NC.) "Cowarts NC Jackson County Nov. 10, 1936. "Dear Dr. Hoffman: "I am glad to get your letter. Yes, my name was Sophrona Hoffman, some called it Huffman in Burke County where I was raised. I was born on April 9, 1841. I was the youngest child of Frederick Hoffman. My mother was Fanny Warlick before she married my father. "My grandfather was Samuel Hoffman. He came from Germany when he was a small boy with his people. His father was George and he had a brother, I don't know his name, that stayed somewhere down the country. I know there was two big rivers to cross, I think they were the Yadkin and Catawba. They come there from Pennsylvania way back I don't know when. There was another brother, I think he was Jacob, that come later and lived way off down the river in Lincoln County. Then Grandaddy Samuel had brothers and sisters that married into the Martins and Heltedrant and Wagners and. Kistlers, I don't remember their names now it's been so long since my daddy told us about these things. You know my daddy always talked funny talk to us and he called it Dutch, he said his father was born over int he Dutch country and could talk a lot of it to his children. My father was in the little war about 1814 I think, but his father was with Col. McDowell of Morganton in the big war with some other furren country. My father moved up here in these mountains in 1843 when I was about 2 years old. He went back to Burke sometimes but never took us children. He died in 1884 and was buried on Caney Fork. He was a good man, a fine hunter, and all his neighbors loved him. "My uncle Michael used to come and visit us but I haven't seen any kin from Burke in many years. I guess they all forgot us in these mountains. I will soon be 96 years old and expect to see a hundred. "Come and see me. I don't have much, but I want to see more of my kinfoiks. Your Friend, Sophrona Page." 92-93 Descendant List for Hiram Monteith KJ (Generation — Name — (Birth Year - Death Year) 1—Hiram MOHTIITH (1819-1900) sp - Rebecca Elmina WELLIER (1840-1875 2—James Walter "Jim" MONTEITH (1857-1939) sp - Rebecca Maye "Beca" WHITESIDE (1878-1938) 3—Hiram David MONTEITH (1901-) sp Emma FREEMAN ( ) 4--Lorene MONTEITH ( ) 4—Bena Nell MONTEITH ( ) sp SARTIN ( ) 4—Hiram David Jr. MONTEITH (1929-) 4—James Wesley MONTEITH (1937-) 4—Bronson MONTEITH ( ) 4—Curry MONTEITH ( ) 3—Uttie Birch Walter MONTEITH (1912-) sp - Janie Elizabeth ROBINSON (1921-) 4—Rebecca Maye "Becky" MONTEITH (1939-) sp - Furmon ELLIOTT ( ) 5—Lillian Jane ELLIOTT (1959-) 5—Mary Sue ELLIOTT (1963-) 4--Beverly Lee MONTEITH (1951-) sp - Joseph Richard LARA ( ) 5—Rebecca Dawn LARA (1971-) 5--Regina Sunshine LARA (1978-) 4—Walter Adam MONTEITH (1955-) 3—Willie M.
