The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices for other non-profit groups. From the Editor We are a little later with tbe publication this time than we bad hoped to be, but in keeping with our past custom about such transgressions, no excuses will be forthcoming. See the first page of your new quarterly for the message of gratitude from our president Dorris Beck, /"""N and know that while we were very tired on August 14, we were also happy to be around such a diligent group of folks. After that message, read and enjoy the work of ten JCGS members who contribute to our publication this time. We are especially pleased to excerpt some primary source documents in this issue, and we are enthusiastic every time we think about all of the fine work done for us by such members as Bonnie Lemme - Barker. In the past few years, we have attempted to focus on veterans in our summer issue. While that did not turn out to be practical for a quarterly publication, we still manage to use some good pictures that focus on military service in one way or another. And as always, we are grateful for their sacrifices for freedom for all of us. Two of our Civil War - era pieces this time are told from a Unionist point of view, a nice balance given that our Western North Carolina counties were home to many persons loyal to either side. Read, enjoy, and let us hear from you. Members donated money, crafts, foods, plants, antiques, collectibles, tools, jewelry, stitchery, and hand-made wooden items, then worked on Friday August 13 to get everything set up for the Saturday sale. Society members served lunches from the Savannah Community Building kitchen, and everyone enjoyed the fellowship with members and customers. Ruth Shuler commented that she is sure that this is the "workingest bunch" of people in the world! Because of the efforts of everyone, our fundraiser was a resounding success. We are very grateful to all who donated money or items for the sale. You made this effort possible. We placed the order early this month for a second printing of The Heritage of Jackson County, Volume H. These should be available in late September. Dorris Dills Beck We extend our sympathy to the family of longtime JCGS member Robert Cole Holbrook, in whose memory we dedicate this issue of Journeys Through Jackson. 97 Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2004 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m v j On this page, two pictures from Tuckasegee Elementary School. The photograph above was shot at an older building, the one below at the newer one. The pictures are shared with us by Joanne Brown Bryson, whose parents are the teachers in the photographs, J.E. C 101 Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2004 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m KJ v _ r The photograph above is nothing less than a testament to an interest in genealogy and to tbe hard work sometimes necessary to accomplish anything in this pursuit. JCGS member Tim Barker, working in Old Savannah Cemetery, found this old field stone mostly bnried and completely covered in fungi and putrefaction. One can readily see what his work produced. Not mentioned in our cemetery book, the stone reads "J.A. Mason DC June 1881 AG 8 8 ." We can understand the abbreviations with no problem. Tim wonders if this is the Jacob Mason mentioned in the Old Savannah church record. Great work, Tim. New JCGS member Bonnie Lemme - Barker of Bellingham, Washington has submitted a real treasure to our Society. Bonnie has sent us voluminous records from several cemeteries in Northwest Washington, and most JCGS members will see names with which they are familiar. We will place these records in a searchable notebook in the Society office.] Cemetery #1...Union Cemetery, Sedro - Woolley, Washington In a publication of the Skagit Valley Genealogical Society (Skagit County, Washington Cemetery Records Volume 1 - Union Cemetery Sedro - Woolley, Washington 1889 -1992 An Annotated Index of Burials), one finds not only the site of a burial and the name of the deceased, but also the appropriate vital dates and certain comments about the deceased. Bonnie went into funeral home records, municipal records, and into this book, and then walked through the cemetery and recorded the North Carolinians. We excerpt her work here with names we surmise to be from Jackson and surrounding counties. C C Name Allen, Charles Landus Ashe, Clarence E. Fred has voiced some concern about the given name of Ninian Bryson's first wife. In his family, this name was given as Sarah Elizabeth Wood. Fred believes that persons calling her Cynthia have confused the name with that of her mother (see the signature above). Fred is also very curious about the identity of the person named "Caler" in the letter above, and about the suffering on Caney Fork in the particular year that this letter was written. We continue in this issue with the editor's own work on the extensive Parris family of Jackson County.] David Parris was the ninth child of David and Mary Morrow Parris. He was bom 10 Dec 1814, probably in South Carolina, and would marry Elizabeth P. Gunter 16 Oct 1839 in Haywood County. He is most likely the same David Parris who earlier married Mahala Elliott, also in Haywood County. David is another of the Parris brothers who did not survive until 1850. We are not certain of his death date, but he is likely buried in Keener Cemetery. Elizabeth, bom about 1823, is almost certainly the "Granny Parris" buried in Valleytown Cemetery in Andrews in the same area with one of her sons. They were the parents of four children: Grandchild #57...Matilda Clementine Parris, bom 23 Aug 1840, died 4 Jul 1883. She married Joseph Lawrence Shook of the Tuckasegee area of Jackson County. We are not sure exactly where this family lived, but later J.L. Shook would live in Swain County. Matilda Clementine is reportedly buried in Old Field Cemetery. J.L. Shook (29 Jul 1837 - 12 Aug 1912) is buried in Lauada Cemetery in Swain County. Their children: Margaret P. Shook (29 Oct 1859-25 Nov 1911) m. William Hamilton Ensley Joseph Beauregard Shook (15 Dec 1861 - ) m. Martha E. Chambers Mary E. Shook (18 Mar 1865-17 Apr 1902) m. William Jason Wiggins Sarah Theodocia Shook (1 Jun 1866-9 Nov 1933) m. Julius Lloyd Woody Infant Shook (bom and died Jul 1867) David Parris Shook (15 Oct 1869 - 5 Feb 1955) m. Sarah Tennessee Hoyle Infant Shook (bom and died 6 Sep 1870) William Wiley Shook (21 Feb 1872 - 26 Mar 1947) m. Dollie Florence Anthony A.C. Shook (13 Feb 1 8 7 3 - 8 Jul 1873) Infant Shook (8 May 1874-10 Jun 1874) Eldora Ann Shook (7 Jun 1876-17 Jul 1876) Notes: JCGS members David Frizzell and Rick FrizzeU descend in this family through the oldest daughter above, Margaret P. Shook Ensley. Only Margaret in this family made her home in Jackson County. Joseph Beauregard lived in Oklahoma, the others in Swain County, although we have always known the family of one of the David Parris Shook daughters who married into the Monteith clan. JCGS member Christine Cole Proctor descends from Sarah Theodocia above. Grandchild #58...Mary Jane Parris, bom 17 Feb 1842, died 28 Sep 1891, married Enos A. Gunter (4 Mar 1 8 4 2 - 8 Mar 1890), and lived in Swain County, presumably in the North Shore area. They are buried in Lauada Cemetery. Their children: David E. Gunter (18 Sep 1867 - 22 May 1936) m. Zenia Anthony, Artie Wiggins James G. Gunter (1879 -) Notes: There may well have been a larger family here. We have never done any concentrated work on this family. L > 121 Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2004 Grandchild #59...Alfred Jefferson Parris, born 3 Mar 1844, died 29 May 1898, married Margaret Clementine Monteith. While some of this family appear to have stayed in Swain ^y County for a time, there was obviously a family move to Texas. Alfred Jefferson is buried in Deep Creek Cemetery, Margaret Clementine in Truscott, Texas. Their children: Samuel Baxter Parris (20 Dec 1870 - 20 Jul 1940) m. Gertrude CoUier James Golman Parris (23 Sep 1872 - 12 Jul 1956) m. Margaret Ivalee DeHart William Wesley Parris (25 Nov 1874 - ) m. Tess David Coleman Parris (29 Jul 1877 - 14 Oct 1897) John Alfred Parris (20 Oct 1879 - ) Mary Elizabeth Parris (18 Feb 1 8 8 2 - 7 Dec 1978) m. Howard H. Jones EUis Lee Parris (7 Nov 1883 - 23 Feb 1928) m. Rosa Josephine Taylor Joseph Robert Parris (25 Jan 1891 - 28 Oct 1955) m. GabrieUa Braden Grover Cleveland Parris (1 Feb 1893 - 17 Nov 1922) m. Evon Myers Jefferson Bryan Parris (11 Jun 1897 - 23 Sep 1953) m. Eva New Notes: This is another family whom we have never researched. When Monteiths are present, we always give credit to JCGS member Betty Cope Andrews, who supplied much of the data above. Some material can be found in the Swain County Heritage Book. One cautionary note: those of us who edit such books do not question the veracity of the articles submitted unless .the material is outrageously offensive or ridiculously prideful. One of the articles there carries some errors of fact that were neither of these conditions, but which came about before some other material had become available to researchers. Grandchild #60...James Monroe Parris, bom 9 Jun 1846, died 7 Oct 1925, married Emiline Potts (22 Apr 1849 - 26 Mar 1926). This family lived in Andrews, and is referenced in the Lebo \^J Parris journal which we have mentioned before in the William Parris family. James Monroe and Emiline are buried there in Valleytown Cemetery. Their children: Mary M. Parris (26 Mar 1868-17 May 1889) Alfred Lee Parris (20 Jun 1871 - 11 Jul 1901) David Lanson Parris (26 Nov 1874 - 20 May 1963) m. Susan J. Hollifield Notes: It is in this family's plot where Elizabeth Gunter Parris is buried. We are not sure if there are any living descendants in this family. The older two children appear to have been unmarried, but we believe there is also some connection to the Longbottom family. We apologize for sloppy work here. This is one of the examples where a part of a genealogy has lain dormant for years without any active work on our part. Talitha Parris Brendle The tenth child of David and Mary Morrow Parris was Talitha, born 21 Feb 1817, died 29 Dec 1902. She had no children of her own, but she became the second wife of E.D. Brendle, beside whom she is buried in Keener Cemetery. A picture of Talitha with her brother John was included in our last issue. In census reports, Talitha is the daughter at home with her widowed mother. >^ 122 o o Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2004 Alfred Parris was the eleventh child of David and Mary Morrow Parris. He was born 28 Jun 1818, probably in South Carolina, and would marry 2 Mar 1842 in Haywood County Fanny Gibson. Alfred was another of the Parris brothers who died very young, about 1847 or 1848, and is probably buried in Keener Cemetery in an unmarked grave. His widow married Bartlett Dills. The two children of Alfred and Fanny: Grandchild #61...Rufus Milton Parris was bom 7 Jul 1842 or 1843 and died 6 Dec 1926. He married Hannah Jane Hall (18 Oct 1 8 4 6 - 8 Jan 1927). They lived in the Sylva - Dillsboro area, and are buried in the Parris Cemetery. Their children: Allen Clingman Parris (15 Jan 1869 - 26 Mar 1954) m. Lina Laura Frizzell John Alvis Parris (19 Aug 1874 - 27 Sep 1947) m. Margaret FrizzeU, Myrtle Tallent Ira Candler Parris (May 1878 - ) m. Lola Barker Grandchild #62...Margaret F. Parris was bom 30 Aug 1846 and died 21 Apr 1904. She married 25 Oct 1871 Nathan WUburn Bumgarner (23 Mar 1848 - 18 Aug 1939). They also lived in the Sylva area. They are buried in Fairview Gardens in Sylva. Their children: Rufus Coleman Bumgarner (20 Aug 1872 - 20 May 1969) m. Margaret Octavia Shuler George Estes Bumgarner (3 Mar 1876 - 6 Jan 1960) m. Margaret Clark Annie Bumgarner (1881 - ) m. Eli Cook Etta May Bumgarner (21 Apr 1885 - ) m. Joseph Robinson Notes: JCGS member Harry Bumgarner descends from Margaret Parris Bumgarner through Rufus Coleman. Journalist and author John Parris was a Rufus Milton Parris descendant. We have no firm dates on the birth and death of Annie Bumgarner Cook, nor are we sure just where she lived. In the Rufus Milton Parris family, only Allen Clingman had a large family. The Margaret Parris Bumgarner family, on the other hand, eventually became quite large. 123 Journeys Through Jackson Summer 2004 J C G S L i b r a r y A c q u i s i t i o ns Call No. 929.2 929.3 929.2 973.7456 973.7456 427 929.3 398.2 286 9293 975.6 929.1 975.8 973 976.9 976.9 975.8 929.1 929.1 051 770 Author Wheatcroft, Elsie C. That the said Grooms did enlist a large number of loyal men and sent them through the lines to the Union Army, and had a larger number nearly ready to go through the lines, and that on the 22nd day of May 1864 the said Grooms was arrested at Chattalooche Creek Haywood Co N.C. by a large force of rebels under Teague and Thomas who captured the said Grooms and others who were with him and finding that the said Grooms had recruiting orders to enlist men from the state in rebellion that the rebels tied Grooms together with Henry Grooms his brother and Mitchell Caldwell his brother in law and shot them to death on the 22 day of May 1864 at Chattalooche Creek Haywood County N.C. That the said Grooms had several bullets shot through his body and that after they were killed, they were left laying in the road until the women of the section taken a team up and buried them. These affiants was well acquainted with the said George Grooms from Dec 1863 until he was killed May 1864. And that during all this time the said Grooms was engaged in Haywood Co N.C. getting up recruits and piloting them through to the Union lines. This was known as the 'Grooms Tune' in that section after the tragedy occurred. My GGGrandmother Sarah Jane Grooms Ellison handed the same story down to her children and on down to the younger generations of what had happened to her grandfather. Her father William Anderson Grooms was around 13 years old at the time and told his children he very much remembered that day because the Home Guard threatened to kill him also. His mother hid him under the bed after their threats. This is just one example of the horrendous conditions people lived under during that dark time in history. Fanny Maybell Bryson (1878 - 1971) married 23 Nov 1904 Doctor W. Ensley (25 Sep 1 8 7 1 - 4 Feb 1928). She married late in life to John Pannell. Maybell and Dock are buried in Crawford Cemetery. Pinckney Crawford, born into slavery, spent his entire life living with or near members of the Crawford family. He did not marry, and is buried in Crawford Cemetery. FamUy #21 Francis M. She is therefore the subject of an unusual genealogical circumstance here, because she is both the mother - in - law and the sister - in - law of Francis Marion Bryson.
