The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices for other non-profit groups. From the Editor We begin another year in the Jackson County Genealogical Society with many feelings and thoughts: first, we are thankful to the Provider for being here to start our new year; second, we are grateful to the membership for your outstanding generosity in response to our appeal in the Fall 2007 issue; third, we are eager as always to bring the efforts of JCGS members to this publication; fourth, we are anxious about our home, since the building we occupy is now on the market; and finally, we are firm in our resolve to do more genealogy in 2008. In our new issue, enjoy the treasure trove unearthed by Jan Crawford, see the usual fine work of Betty Cope Andrews, study two generations of the Phillips family, peruse the customary transcriptions of official records, and feast your eyes on some wonderful old photographs. In one way or another, eighteen JCGS members contributed to this issue. Is that very fine or what? The 2007 Robert Lee and Drusilla Holden Award for Distinguished Service to Genealogy was presented to T. Walter Middleton. Walter, a JCGS life member, is the author of several books, the latest of which, Trouble at the Forks, details Jackson County life in the Civil War. Particularly interesting in the book is Walter's research into the H o o p e r - Watson feud. The Daniel Washington Deitz Memorial Award, presented annually to a JCGS member who has given extraordinary service to the Society itself, was awarded to Sanji Talley Watson. Sanji, who was one of the principal workers in the publication of our new marriage book, is also a frequent contributor to Journeys and is a faithful Office volunteer. Every group should be so fortunate as to have such members as these. U I n S y m p a t hy We offer our sincere sympathy to the family of JCGS member Bobby Carpenter, who died in December. We also offer our sympathy to JCGS members Blonnie Moody and James Monteith, who have recently suffered losses in their families. A niece told us she had been told many years ago by her father that Catherine was buried in an unmarked grave in or near Whittier. We know that her oldest daughter, Lena M. Cooper, was buried in Thomas Memorial Cemetery in 1981, leading us to think perhaps Catherine was buried in the same cemetery...is there a record of burials or is there someone we could contact?" JCGS members James and Ruby Parris PO Box 252 Atkins IA 52206 U Dear fellow members: I have been thinking how I can possibly thank you folks for the great vote of confidence you have given me. I've decided that one of the ways to thank you is to simply say that I take this responsibility very seriously, and intend to do my very best to uphold the dignity of position that you deserve. It will be hard to fill the shoes of outgoing President Dorris Dills Beck. (Now wouldn't I look funny in a pair of Dorris's shoes?) Since I think that this task of filling her shoes is unattainable, I will work hard and try to make the right decisions for the Society. I treasure my friendship with Dorris and I hope I can count on her help with this new venture. Another way to thank you, since very few of you know anything about me, is to tell you a few things about my family and me. I was born James Eugene Monteith 27 Dec 1956 to Lowell and Jennie Jones Monteith. (I bet they thought, "Confound! What a Christmas present!) I am married to Kay A. Keefer, and we have two sons, Adam Winton Monteith and Levi Keefer Monteith. Kay is a registered nurse at Harris Regional Hospital. Kay and I have three grandchildren, Bradley Tyler, Leanah Taylor, and Adrienne Nichole Monteith. These children belong to Adam and his wife Stephanie Coggins ^_J Monteith. We enjoy being "Gram" and "Papaw." Our younger son Levi is unmarried. I work at Monteith Lumber Company in Ela, and I have worked in the timber and sawmill business for the past thirty years. My interests are raising daylilies, enjoying my privacy, collecting pocket knives, woodworking, Nascar racing, and of course genealogy. Enough about me. Here's hoping you all had a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and wishing all of your research to be fulfilling. Gratefully yours, James E. JCGS member Lavine Greene Callicott writes, "Does anyone know this family? I found the original in a box of Mother's things after her passing. She probably got it in a box of things at a yard sale or flea market in the 1980's or early 1990's in Jackson or Swain County. Mother, Jane Greene, lived at Wilmot community in Jackson County. It is not now in a frame, but probably was originally. Approximately 10 by 15 Vt inches." In this case, JCGS member Jan Crawford shares with the Society the contents of an old box that was in the possession of his sister Judy and which was inherited from their grandfather L.W. ("Ranzy") Crawford. L.W. had in turn inherited some of these items from his father (G.W. Crawford), who had in turn inherited some of the items from his father W.R. Crawford. Only Jan is still living in this particular direct line, and we are grateful that he would share with us. Crawford N.C. Jackson Co March the 30 1876 Dear uncle and aunt I take the opportunity of draping you a few Iins to let you know how we all are and about the sickness and trouble and distress we have had in the family and settlement. I was at the Peabody school a t Cold Spring N.C. a going to school and taken the mumps and whil I was there Wesly Williamses wife took down sick with the fevor and had a very severe attact of the fevor and mother wated on her and tended very closely to her during the sickness, and when she got able to be taken home they hailed her home, and the very day when they took her home mother took down with the fevor and this day marks the twenty third day since she was taken down and She is very low now but a little better than She was but mends very slow, they stood over her bed side watching to see her dy but as God allowed it, she liveth yet. They Sent bed close and soft things for me to ride on and Sam came to me and took me home, and in a short time after I got home Wesley Williams took down with the fevor and laid eleven days and died and he died the happiest man I ever saw, he become so happy a day or so before he died that he did not no his misserie appearantly he almost preached the day before he died at night, he said he could see a chain and it was very near wound up and he told several of us that they was a great revival just before him, and he (said?) to me and his wife and more of the people for us not to weep for him but to weep for our selves and he said to me I now that my redeemer liveth. We have great faith and evidence that he is now where he can reap the benefits of his labour and toils and troubles that he had here. I think he is gone to walk t h e golden streets of the New Jerusalem, I think he is with moses and all of the prophets and disciples and children of God and is where he can give glory and Honor and praise to the most high and where he can reap the joys thereof. Uncle I could tell you more in one hour if I was with you than I can write in one hole day. I would love to see you all and talk with you but I cant tell fall. I want to come next fall and see you all, mother says that she never expects to see you any more without you come to see her for she never will be able to come see you So I will have to come to a close by saing I truly want you to write us and let know how you all are. Yours truly T.M. Crawford to Wm. Crawford and to ant Oily, and to Carletty [Ed. In the fall 2007 issue of this publication, T.M. Crawford's family was listed in our "One Thing and Another" section. T.M. is writing to Rev. William R. and Olive Hemphill Crawford. "Billy" Crawford was this young man's great - uncle, but Billy's wife "Oily" was the writer's aunt, sister of his mother, Hannah Hemphill Crawford. Hannah and Olive were daughters of Robert and Mary Queen Hemphill. Wesley Williams, whose death he describes here, is actually his brother - in - law. Point of interest: Where was the Peabody School at Cold Springs? We assume he is talking about the place we recognize in Swain County. Can anyone enlighten us further about such a school? In the first, notice the tone of the letter...certainly he doesn't seem eager to show any false bravado, but rather seems accepting of the fact that fighting must be done. We are immensely pleased to run this letter. Andy Crawford was killed at Malvern Hill five months after he wrote this letter. In the second, note that he names his younger brothers and sisters still at home. Sina Crawford would later marry Samuel H. Bryson, Violet would marry Joseph Sutton, and Mariah would marry John Sullivan Bryson. George Washington Crawford was just a little boy. P.J. Crawford was not yet in the war, but had been on the worse end of a fight with a Union sympathizer named Loudermilk, who was, according to tradition, riding with "raiders." We are curious whether Andy is just saying hello to the three other named persons, or whether he is asking them also to write to him. We know the identity of Pink, and we suspect that the two feminine names also refer to slaves. If they were literate, then the Rev. W.R. Crawford broke the law. Hemphill Pine Mountain Geo Oct 18th 1857 Dear Brother & Sister It is with great concern that I avail myself with the present opportunity of droping you these few lines in order to inform you that I am not at the time very well though I am on Foot. I were very sick as I came Home from your House. I did not get Home until Monday Evening after I left your House on Saturday. At this time My family are all on Foot but they are not well. We have all been very sick some time since and We have lost our Baby little James Aaron. He died on the 18th of last Month Sept. and at that time it appeared that We would have lost more of our children as they were all sick and a greater part of them were very Bad. But at this time I think they will recover if no relaps. AH the people of this country have been sick this season since I was at your Hous, the complaint that has raged through this country were the Bloody flux or something of that kind. Our Physicians say the complaint is wors than any Flux and above their skills. We have had many Deaths in this section the most of which were Children that have Died. Not many dangerous cases here at present, it is dying out. Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2008 Dear Brother you see stated on the 1st page of my Letter that I have lost my Minor Son and as I feel it my duty to have my little sons Funeral Preached, I must ask you to attend to and , J Preach it for me, if you can do so. Should it happen that you cannot come and Preach the Funeral, I want you to Write and let me know, though I hope you will send an appointment if it is in your power to come. So I will leave the Funeral subject with you in hopes of receiving an appointment soon. They were son and daughter of Robert and Mary Queen Hemphill. Robert was a son of James and Elizabeth Patton Hemphill. We can find census documentation for Joseph in Rabun County, but until we saw this letter, we were unsure of just where he lived. (Pine Mountain is located between Clayton and Walhalla.) The "P" in his name stood for "Patton," the maiden name of Joseph Hemphill's grandmother. We are curious about the extent of this man's education...this letter is written with attention to spelling, and even has some correct punctuation. The last time we checked at the grocery store, a decent steak was nearly $14 per pound, slightly higher than the prices Hemphill was quoting here.] Item #5...Scotts Creek School Committee State of North Carolina Jackson County We the undersigned School committee and patrons of the 3rd School district in Scotts Creek Township having heretofore [illegible] an order on H.P. While looking up something for another reason, we needed to use this particular document. Then it occurred to us that we could attempt to isolate the families who lived in Haywood County in 1830, but probably resided in areas that would later be encompassed by the boundaries of Jackson County. Those areas would be Scotts Creek, Caney Fork, Soco, Oconaluftee, and other areas along the Tuckaseigee River on the east side. West of the river was Macon County. Please understand that this is guesswork, and we might well have included families here who never lived in what is now Jackson County. The following article represents work on the part of several genealogists and JCGS members. Linda Hughes Collins shares it with the Society.] Daniel Phillips Sr. was bom about 1788 in South Carolina and died 6 Aug 1850 in Haywood (now Jackson) County, North Carolina. He married Ruth "Ruthie" Farris about 1808 in Paris Station, Greenville County, South Carolina. She was born about 1791 in South Carolina and died in 1872 in Jackson County. Both Daniel and Ruth are buried in Balsam Grove Cemetery, Caney Fork, Jackson County, North Carolina. Daniel's gravestone has an incorrect date of birth of 1806 and Ruth's gravestone has an incorrect date of birth of 1817. Corrected markers have been placed at the foot of the graves. Daniel and Ruth were the parents of at least eleven children, who were the following: Mary "Polly" Phillips, who was born about 1810 in South Carolina and died about 1880 in Jackson County. She married Clemmons S. "Clem" Hooper J r . on 28 Feb 1829 in Haywood (now Jackson) County. He was born 15 Jul 1810 in the Brasstown section of Caney Fork and died 5 Dec 1878. Both are likely buried in the Hooper Cemetery on Brasstown Road in Jackson County. He has a grave marker, with unmarked graves on either side. Elizabeth "Betsy" Phillips, who was born about 1811 in South Carolina and died after 1880 in Cullowhee. She married Josiah "Cy" Watson sometime between 1830 and 1833. He was born in 1819 in Haywood County and died 13 April 1895 in Cullowhee. Both are buried in the Watson Cemetery on Watson Branch in Cullowhee. (Linda ^ Hughes Collins, Clyde Phillips, Bill Crawford, and Ruth Bryson visited the Watson Cemetery in November 2007. The cemetery was difficult to find and the only way to get to it was by walking through a wooded area. Only four graves are in the cemetery, and they have only field stones for markers, with no information on them. Per family lore, the four graves are those of Elizabeth Phillips Watson, Josiah Watson, and two of their children, names unknown to us.) Sarah Ann Phillips, who was born 22 Mar 1812, most likely in South Carolina, and died 2 Dec 1850 in Jackson County. She married Elias Watson about 1830. He was born in 1801 in Rutherford County and died in March 1851 in Jackson County. Sarah is buried in the Cullowhee Baptist Church Cemetery. There are unmarked graves next to her stone, and Elias is probably buried in one of these William Phillips, who was bom 14 Sep 1813 in the Cullowhee area and died 15 Sep 1863 in Haywood County. He married Nancy Parker 26 Dec 1833. She was bom 15 Jan 1820 at Cowarts on Caney Fork and died 2 Nov 1901 in Cullowhee. William appears to have been the first of Daniel and Ruthie's children to be born in North Carolina. William is buried at Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery in Haywood County. [Ed. See p. 3.] Nancy is buried at Cullowhee Baptist Church Cemetery. Nancy Phillips, who was bom in 1815 at Cowarts on Caney Fork and who died some time between 1880 and 1900 in Jackson County. She married John Parker on 28 Nov 1844. He was bom in 1803 and died between 1860 and 1870. Rath "Ruthie" Phillips, who was bom about 1820 in Haywood (now Jackson) County and died before 1835, most likely also in Jackson County. Information exists that indicates that Ruthie died in 1832. She is probably buried in Balsam Grove Cemetery, but her grave is not marked. There is an unmarked grave beside Daniel Phillips leading off Row 9, and this is possibly the site of Ruthie's grave. Matilda "Tildy" Phillips, who was bom in August 1824 in Haywood (now Jackson) County and died in 1910 in Jackson County. She married Samuel Houston "Sam" Coward, Sr. about 1847. He was bom about 1828 and died 5 Mar 1864 as a prisoner of war at Camp Douglas, Illinois. Tildy is possibly buried in one of the Coward Cemeteries or at Balsam Grove. Several of her children are in the Upper Coward Cemetery, so that is a good guess. Her husband Sam is buried in the Confederate Cemetery in Chicago. He served 1861 - 1864 as a Private in Company G, 62nd North Carolina Troops, CSA. Daniel Phillips, Jr., who was bom in February 1825 in Haywood (now Jackson) County and died 19 Jun 1904 in Bell Creek Township, Towns County, Georgia. He married Louisa Dawson in March 1851. Our potpourri of small genealogical treasures, news, sundries and notions, and assorted nonsense.] Jacqueline Burgin Painter passed along a photocopy of a sheet taken from the Asheville Citizen issue of 24 Jan 1898. Headlined "Mission Work in W.N.C." then with a subheading of "What the Presbyterian Church is Doing" and further subheaded by "The Subject Presented at the First Presbyterian Sunday - The People Eager To Hear the Gospel," the article relates that Rev. A. Walker White, "pastor of the churches of Dillsboro and Bryson City" (among others) spoke of mission work in the mountains, to refute the perception that the Presbyterian Church was "standing still." The churches at Dillsboro and Bryson City were "neat" with "flourishing congregations." The article goes on to decry mountain ignorance, the Universalists, and the Mormons. [Ed.
