Roles Chair, Publications (Editor) R- Larry Crawford Journeys Through Jackson is the official publication of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. Members and non-members are invited to submit genealogical materials for publication, with the understanding that the editor reserves the right to edit these materials for genealogical content, clarity, or taste. The Society assumes no responsibility for errors of fact that may be contained in submissions, and except where noted, the opinions expressed arc not those of the editor or of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices for other non-profit groups. From the Editor We finish another outstanding year in the Jackson County Genealogical Society, and as proof of that ~* assertion, this publication will be distributed or mailed to 235 of the finest folks in the country. We are ^j thankful in this holiday season to know many of these members and to be able to share this love of genealogy with them. As in all years, we have faced our quota of challenges. Not everyone spent 24/7 doing genealogy (Imagine!), and we personally admit to many shortcomings. Our challenge grant has not yet been matched in full, but we are hopeful that we can state differently by January 1. The water heater in the office decided to leak and flood the storage closet, and that was fun for everyone present. But where else can we find an organization in which the President occasionally wears a kilt; where we can have programs with such excellent speakers as Anne Rogers and Curtis Wood; and where St. Nick visits the editor early, bringing along materials from Will Cagle, Sam Phillips, Bonnie Barker, Betty Queen Monteith, Betsy Dodd Pittman of Burke County, Ruth Ensley Bryson, Linda Owen Anders, Linda Hughes Collins, Dorris Dills Beck, Ruth Hall Norman, Linda Davis, and Ruth Crawford Shuler? Only here in JCGS, of course. Have a joyous season, and enjoy JTJ with the eggnog. Annie Lee was another of our well-known traditional artists and craftspersons; she had gained wide recognition for her corn shuck dolls. She was always in attendance at WCU's Mountain Heritage Day, and she was the winner of the 2010 Mountain Heritage Day Award. We express our sympathy to her daughters and other family members. In Sympathy We also extend our sympathy to JCGS members Ann Hampton Peters, Grover and Ernestine Jones, and Vernon Painter for their recent losses. We are firm in our conviction that this separation is only temporary. Correction JCGS member Harold Ensley reports that his great-aunt Annie Belle Blanton stated that the woman in the singing school picture (JTJ, Spring 2009) is not her mother, and that she is not the baby. We regret the error, but we are always grateful when someone cares enough to point out our mistakes. They shared the pictures of Will's great-grandparents, above, and grandfather, below. On the left above is Wilma Margaret Barker (18 Apr 1840 - 11 Jun 1906), on the right her husband Evan Harvey Cagle (10 Feb 1839 - 10 Oct 1916). Below, their son Candler Collins Cagle (5 Jul 1876 - 23 Mar 1960), a Spanish - American War veteran. \ J 146 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2010 C ' J C G S P h o t o A l b u m <s ^ The above are the children of Merritt Rickman ("Rick") and Mary Matilda Blanton Phillips, pictured with their sister-in-law Dora Waldrop Phillips. In the back row are Robert, John, Sam, and Walt Phillips. In front are Etta, Vada, Dora Waldrop Phillips (widow of Herbert Edgar), Maude, and Mamie. These folks lived in the Greenville, South Carolina area. Picture submitted by JCGS member Sam Phillips, a grandson of Herbert Edgar and Dora. 147 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2010 J C G S P h o t o A l b um \ J 'KJ Also submitted by Sam Phillips, the picture above shows his grandfather, Herbert Edgar Phillips. We were pleased to meet some of this Phillips family at the annual Phillips reunion (and many thanks to Ruth Bryson and Linda Collins for their gracious invitations to join them). We might also mention that the children of Rick and Mary Phillips married into families with strong Jackson County connections...Parker, Slatton, and Rogers, for example. Herbert Edgar above, died 31 Mar 1929, so was not in the family group picture on the previous page. KJ 148 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2010 <W J C G S P h o t o A l b u m V^ JCGS member Bonnie Barker has searched for 12 years for the resting place of Josephine Wood Barker. She believes that the above has rewarded her persistence. This field stone is located in the Ashe - McKay Cemetery above Mount Pleasant Church. The " J " and the "Barker" are plainly visible, and we trust that this shows the resting place of Josephine, who died in 1911. 149 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2010 J C G S P h o t o A l b um KJ \ y The pictures above were taken in August of 2009 by Mike Shay. At the top, Samuel A. Frizzell, aka Gribble. At the bottom, one of the fabulous views from the cemetery in LaVeta, Colorado. See Jackson County Heritage, Volume H, article # 344 for Rick Frizzell's fascinating story of the name change. One of the very fine periodicals that comes our way thanks to the exchange program is The Burke Journal, and we frequently find information there pertinent to the ancestors of Jackson County families. Note that J. Hall took in the tax listings. Other tax listings for this militia company have been published. The 1805 tax list for this company was abstracted by Ransom McBride and published in the North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal of November 1982. The 1807 tax list for this company was published in the Burke County Genealogical Society Journal of February 2006. This issue contains the 1808 and 1809 lists. The 1804 and 1806 tax lists for this company have not yet been transcribed for publication. I have copies of all legible extant Burke County tax lists in my home files, arranged by year, company, and area. The original tax lists reside in the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh. A year-to-year comparison of lists will show movement into, and out of, the company. The Gribble - Shanks - Hall - Wilkinson Connections * The estate of John Gribble is mentioned in the Burke County Court minutes of January 1808. Thomas Gribble and Margaret Gribble, widow, were administrators of the estate. There apparently was no will. See "Deaths Recorded in Minutes of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, Burke County, NC, 1791- 1834, abstracted from the original and annotated by Clarence A. Winters", in the Burke County Genealogical Society Journal, August 1997, at page 26. On the 1807 tax list, John Gribble was taxed on 415 acres and 2 polls. There is an extant 1808 Burke County estate folder for John Gribble in the North Carolina State Archives. A deed, dated 20 February 1804, in the Burke County Court minutes of April 1804, shows that Thomas Gribble was a legatee of James Shanks, dec'd, thereby proving that Thomas Gribble had married a daughter of James and Fenwell Shanks, for Gribble inherited in right of his wife. See "Burke County Wills, Administrations, and Orphans, 1791-1810" in North Carolina Genealogy, Spring-Summer 1973, by William Perry Johnson, at page 2826, and Burke County, NC, Deeds Registered 1804-1813, by Kathy G. Sullivan, CG, at page 67. 159 Journeys Tltrough Jackson Fall 2010 In the Burke County Court minutes of April 1804, administration was granted to Fenwell Shanks, " , widow of James Shanks, and the year's allowance to the widow and family are mentioned. In the same ^-^ session of court, the dower of Fenwell Shanks was ordered to be laid off, listing her as "the now wife of John Hall". In the January 1805 Burke County court minutes, we read of the petition of John Hall and wife regarding laying off of the dower to Fenwell Hall, late widow and wife of James Shanks, dec'd. The will of John Hall was presented at Burke County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions in January 1812 but is no longer extant, due to record destruction. Widow Fenwell Hall and Jesse Hall were named executors of the estate. However, the same will was also probated in York County, South Carolina, in 1816; that copy may be found in the South Carolina State Archives in Columbia, South Carolina, as Case 58, File 2621. We also have a copy in the Hall Family vertical file in the North Carolina Room of the Burke County Public Library in Morganton. There is an extant 1812 Burke County estate file for John Hall in the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh. We have, on microfilm in the North Carolina Room of the Burke County Public Library in Morganton, copies of the same papers plus copies of all other Burke County loose estates papers held in the Archives. On 15 August 1817, Jas. Dysart assessed the 1816 land of Frentwell [sic] Hall at 833 acres. See Burke County, NC, Civil Actions About Land, 1779-1891, Loose Papers, by Dr. A. B. Pruitt, at page 74. Fenwell Hall's will was presented for probate in the Burke County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions of January 1821; see "Deaths Recorded in Minutes of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, Burke County, NC, 1791-1834", by Clarence A. Winters, published in the August 1997 issue of this periodical, - - at page 26. This will is no longer extant, and there is no Burke County estate folder for her in the North K_J Carolina State Archives. Moses Wilkinson is shown above holding 216 acres for the heirs of Jams Shanks. Research has shown that Moses Wilkinson, sometimes Wilkerson, and John Hall were intertwined from their origins in Baltimore County, Maryland. John Hall came to Burke County via Sullivan County, North Carolina (now Tennessee). It may be that the Gribbles also originated in Maryland; that aspect has not been explored. Usually family and "old friends", folks known to be trustworthy, were involved with wills and estates. Jackson County Notes Pertinent to This Article The editor is a lineal descendant of both Joshua Hall and James Hemphill. Other names important to Jackson County are Cowan, Buchanan, Melton, Monteith, Frizzell, Sellers, and Gribble. The Margaret Gribble above became the second wife of Samuel Monteith. Joshua Hall (Sr.) named a son Moses Wilkerson Hall. The latter lived in Cherokee County. ^*j 160 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2010 O P i c t u r e s f r o m R u t h E n s l e y B r y s o n [Ed. Norman of Jackson County" was James Isaac Norman, third son of George and Louisa Hinshaw Norman. Like their other children, he was born in Yadkin County, where the family was listed in the 1860 census in the Forbush township. They had moved to the Ochre Hill section of Jackson County before 1863. "Sarah M. Brooks of Jackson County" was Sarah Mayes Brooks, one of the daughters of Thomas Robert and Lucinda Blanton Brooks. These were Rutherford County folks who had moved to the Balsam area before 1850. "at John Cope's." John Cope was married to Jane Brooks, older half-sister of Sarah. They lived at Ochre Hill. "by H.M. Cook, J.P." This was Henson M. Cook, who also lived in the immediate area where the marriage took place. Through the years, a number of H.M. Cook descendants have belonged to JCGS. "Witness David Norman" David Norman was an older brother of James Isaac Norman. David was married to Dollie Elizabeth Brooks, a sister of Sarah's. This Norman family lived on Woodfin Creek, and descendants still live there. From the "Births" section: Martha Jane Norman, Sarah E. (Sarah Emma) Norman and Robert V. (Robert Vance \) Norman) were the children of James Isaac and Sarah Brooks Norman. Mary J. Norman was Mary Jane McKay, first wife of Robert Vance Norman and mother of Samuel James Norman. Following her very early death, she was buried in the Ashe-McKay Cemetery at Willets. Louisa Hinshaw's birth date is recorded in her parents' family Bible as 20 Feb 1817. This is the only place we have ever seen the birth date of George Norman. His parents have eluded us for more than thirty years of researching families. William Hamilton Blanton, husband of Sarah Emma Norman, was the second son of William Riley and Depina Ensley Blanton. He and Sarah Emma were the parents of Thomas P. (Posey) Blanton (whose sons Robert and Roland still live in this area) and William (Bill) Blanton, whose grandsons Harold and Haven Ensley are members of JCGS. Jas. C. Norman is James Caldwell Norman, the same person whom we spotlighted in our summer issue. His descendants stated that he was reared in an uncle's home, and his birthdate recorded here would give support to that assertion. Note that his birth was actually one year earlier than we had supposed in our summer issue. Again, he is the nephew of James Isaac Norman. In the "Deaths" section: Rovestus Blanton and Martha C. Blanton would have been children of William Hamilton VJ' and Sarah Emma Norman Blanton. This couple had one other child, a son Robert, who is 182 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2010 L not listed in the Bible, but who was listed in the 1900 census as having been born in June of 1898. Robert Norman (d. 1921) and Ruby Marie Norman (d. 1942) were children of Samuel James and Mell Mills Norman. Virgie, who married Walter Queen, was another of their daughters. Interestingly, James I. Norman's death is not recorded in the Bible. He died 3 J u n 1900. Other notes: James Isaac Norman and most of this family are buried in the Blanton-Norman (or Norman-BIanton) Cemetery at Ochre Hill. This small cemetery was quite possibly the Cook Cemetery originally, because this is the resting place of H.M. Cook. "Mell" Norman, wife of Sam Norman, was Martha Melvina Mills, a daughter of Clingman Mills and his wife Sarah Ida Sutton. M y s t e r y P h o to w C Can someone tell us the location of this building? It seems to be a church, possibly a school, and was in the pictures of Doris Hoyle Fisher, whose daughter Linda Stephens shared the picture with us. 183 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2010 O n e T h i n g a n d A n o t h e r \ J [Ed.
