From the Editor Fall has arrived to the mountains and you can look around and watch the trees changing everyday. The smell of wood smoke in the early mornings bring back many memories of our childhoods; gathering chestnuts and chinquapins; fried dried apple pies; dried pumpkin; chestnut bread and cornmeal cookies. Fall is the time of year that we start to get ready for long winter ahead. Thinking about the coming holidays and the coming snow, when will it get here and will there be lots of it. Winter is a time when people have some extra time on their hands, and it’s a good opportunity to catch up on genealogical work. Remember that the Society library is a really good resource and our information and research materials are ever growing. Come on in and check out what we have added since you were here last. December Meeting The December meeting of JCGS will be held at the East Sylva Baptist Church Fellowship Hall on December 12, 2013 at 6:30 p. m. Bring a covered dish and join us for our annual meeting and supper. Hard to Shop For If you have someone that is hard to shop for this holiday season, consider a membership to the Society. They will be notified that a membership has been obtained in their name. Also, consider any of the fine books that the Society has to offer. Contact the office for further information. JCGS members Eucella Hamilton and Henry Buchanan have also passed away, and we offer our condolences to their families. Henry, a long-time member and former Vice President of JCGS, will be sorely missed by the Society. Henry purchased and donated the laptop computer and several software programs that the Society uses. He was an avid researcher of the Buchanan name and was responsible for getting Buchanan information into a computer database that would make collecting and sharing genealogical information easier for all. Cards may be sent to Henry’s mother, Mrs. Martha Mitchem, 125 Suncrest Rd., Cherryville, NC 28021. Congratulations to JCGS member Amy Garza and Catch the Spirit of Appalachia for winning the Mountain Heritage Award this past September. The award was presented in Cullowhee on the campus of Western Carolina University on the annual Mountain Heritage Day. Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2013 146 JCGS Photo Album In the last issue of JTJ, we ran a picture of Sylva’s girls basketball team, so to even the score and continue an old rivalry, we offer this one. This picture was brought into the Society by JCGS member Dorris Dills Beck. This is the 1950-51 Girl’s Basketball team from Cullowhee High School. Front row, left to right; Willa Jean Wilson, Bernice Pressley, JoAnne Henson, Christine Walker, Eloise Stevens, Catherine Ashe; Back Row: Anne Hampton, Dorris Dills, Harriet Mashburn, Louise Tilley, Brona Middleton, Doris Taylor, Cleo Dossett, Avis Williams, Shirley Seago, Manager. (Not in picture: Mary Bell Taylor and Coach Vernon Painter.) This picture includes two current JCGS members, can you spot them? Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2013 147 JCGS Photo Album These pictures were sent to the Society by Sara McRorie Tyburski, the daughter of long-time Editor of the Sylva Herald, J. D. McRorie. The picture above is identified as Oscar School. We know that it was on Tilley Creek in Cullowhee. The year or people were not given. To the left is the Oscar School 1965. Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2013 148 JCGS Photo Album Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2013 149 JCGS Photo Album The picture on the opposite page was brought in by Linda Hughes Collins. It is a class from Cullowhee School. The above is of Cary Holland Hensley and Rachel Mozelle Green Hensley, submitted by their granddaughters Jean Scott and Celia Miles. The picture to the left comes to us from Christine Proctor who received it from David Monteith. It is of Lee Parris, who eventually Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2013 150 JCGS Photo Album This great picture that we have called “Highway Men,” was brought to the society by Betty Raby Rowland. “W. T. Mason Lumber Co., Whittier, NC” is written on the back of the photograph. Also is noted that W. Carl Conley is in the second row, second from the right. Carl was a log scaler. The other men are as yet unidentified. Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2013 151 Surveying the News of August, 1940 [Ed. The flood of 1940 prompted persons to save pictures and documents related to that terrible circumstance. JCGS member Betty Raby Rowland shares with us The Jackson County Journal of August 15, 1940. Besides the flood accounts, we also find much of genealogical importance in the paper.] Comments: Try building even the cloak rooms today for that cost. Where did the actual building of View Point School sit? Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2013 152 Above, if these folks ever got their bridge, we are unaware of it. From Thomas Valley, one still must go to Whittier or Wilmot, or get creative and go to Barkers Creek, or get really creative and go through Franklin via Big Laurel. Below, a small clipping from a flood account. Is this consistent with what our older members remember? Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2013 153 It was nice of such important folks to come here. We never fail to be alternately entertained and disgusted at bowing and scraping. The patently ridiculous idea that some persons are more important than others leaves us either laughing or fuming. Secondly, in the “Webster” news, notice the section about Historical Association President and JCGS member Joe Rhinehart. Wonder if Joe remembers this occasion? Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2013 154 Above, two of the display ads from the paper. We suppose that “Wolfe Riding Devices” is a disingenuous name for a privately owned carnival. To the right, notice that the pool hall was advertising itself as “clean” and “wholesome.” Good grief. Some of us were raised to believe that pool was as sinful as setback and moonshine. We never fail to notice when we encounter pool tables in churches. Such degradation. Below, rather large real estate offerings. Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2013 155 In the top clipping on this page: persons should be aware that Florida folks have been with us for a long time. Parts of our county have been resort and second-home areas for more than a century. Below, the notice for a family reunion that is still being held today, and a small news item about some local ladies. Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2013 156 Above, an editorial in poor disguise as a news story. As all of you know, the Congress of Industrial Organizations eventually merged with the American Federation of Labor to form the AFL-CIO. Unions in the AFL were traditionally of a particular craft, while the CIO represented workers industry-wide such as the United Mine Workers. The merger was not without some angst and violence. Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2013 157 East La Porte P. T. A. Records for 1939- 1940 ED: This journal was brought into the Society by Bremm Hooper. Some of the parents met together for the purpose of discussing P. T. A. work and to make plans to organize later. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Farley & Mr. Hooper made some good discussions along this line. Since Mr. Farley had been a teacher he knew just what a P.T.A. would mean to our school and the need of one in our school. 1. Plans for improving our building and grounds were discussed. 2. Plans for the P.T.A. sponsoring a Lunch Room in the school. This led into a general discussion by many of the parents. After this it was decided while this group of interested people were together would be a good time to organize and elect officers. Mrs. J. W. Farley was elected President Mrs. Fred Cope was elected Vice President Mrs. Robt. Fisher was elected Sec. & Treasurer The Committees were appointed later by the President. It was voted to hold the second meeting Aug 25th and have some one talk on P.T.A. work from other schools. After this a social hour was enjoyed. Refreshments were served by the teachers. The Second Meeting Aug 25th 1939 The second meeting of the E La P (sic) PTA was Friday, Aug the 25th. Mrs. J. W. Farley the Pres. Presided after the meeting was called. Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2013 161 Wanda Bryson Marcus Shares Photographs ED: The following pictures are submitted for publication by JCGS member Wanda Bryson Marcus. The subjects are from the Savannah community. This is a larger print of a photograph that appeared in Volume I of Jackson County Heritage. It shows the William Fitzhugh Lee Bryson family. Bryson is holding his second daughter Ethel Lee, who married Robert Jones. The boy in the back is Fred Bryson, Wanda’s father. Bryson’s wife, Texie Tatham Bryson, is holding the second son Willis Bryson. The little girl on the left is Bonnie, who grew up to marry Walter Frizzell. The picture was taken about 1904, before the birth of the youngest child Iris, who married Hampton Hall. Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2013 162 The photograph above looks very familiar to us, but we are unsure of the identities. The picture to the left is of Wanda’s great-aunt Lola Etta Wilson Snyder…13 Nov 1893 – 28 Apr 1939…buried Zion Hill Cemetery Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2013 163 The couple to the left are Wanda’s great-uncle, Cole Wilson and an unidentified woman. Cole lived and died in West Virginia. The photograph to the bottom is the reverse of the Cole Wilson postcard. It was addressed to “Miss Hazel Wilson, Gay, NC.” Probably not deliverable in 2013. Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2013 164 Wanda does not know the identity of this gentleman. The original is a tintype which we have lightened. Notice the original presentation. Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2013 165 Martha Elmina Wilson…She lived 23 May 1853 – 28 Apr 1939 and is buried in Zion Hill Cemetery in the Pumpkintown community of Jackson County.. She was Wanda’s great – grandmother. The John Franklin Sutton – Leah Rachel Hamilton Bryson family…Raymond U. and Vinnie are standing in the rear; Freeman is to the far left, Baston is on his father’s knee, and Jimmy is being held by his mother. This picture would have been made in 1906, before the births of Ralph and Leon. Identifications verified by Steve Gray, grandson of Leon. In one letter, after repeatedly bemoaning his failure to locate some particular relative, he wrote, “Where, oh where!” I still laugh about it, at the same time recognizing my own similar habits and faults. I also remember a silly, maudlin popular song that went something like, “Where oh where can my baby be? The Lord took her away from me.” (She had obviously fallen victim to some dire calamity, but darned if I can remember what.) Anyway, the overstated expression is a good one for my title. In Jackson County Heritage, Volume 1, Article 1056, we devoted a paragraph to Ruth Almeda Norman Shuler Moore. In this article, we named her six daughters and her two husbands, John Henry Shuler and James A. Moore. The paragraph concludes with this statement: “Through diligent search, we have been unable to locate these families.” Then in 1997, I corresponded briefly with a Ruth Almeda descendant. Tony Smart in Atlanta is a great-grandson of Ruth Almeda’s oldest daughter, Novella Jane Shuler Owen, and he provided some materials that were very welcome. He did not, however, know of the fate of his great-great-grandmother Ruth Almeda. That was the extent of the effort toward the family until the summer of 2013. Because of my abiding distrust in Internet genealogy and its contemptible copycat errors, I certainly don’t use it much. I do, however, frequently lean on the expertise of my sister Ruth Shuler, who navigates Ancestry.com for its official records and documents. One other exception that I have been forced to admit as helpful has been Find A Grave. Generally, I think that these volunteers take their readings and notes with accuracy, even if some of them get carried away with their own importance and use that site as a forum to spread even more copycat errors. On 19 July, 213, I entered “Ruth Moore” and “South Carolina” into the proper searchable fields on Find A Grave, read down a few lines, and found Moore, Ruth A. Shular. I read the entry and easily concluded that this was indeed my great-grandfather’s older sister Ruth Almeda. (Some persons spell the Shuler surname with an “A.” Most spell it with an “E.” All descend from the western North Carolina pioneer George Shuler.) I would hope that I’ve learned a little restraint through the years, so I did not react to my discovery in any manner that disgraced or compromised myself or this organization. I merely picked up the telephone, called sister Ruth, and told her what I’d found. She probably suspected that I would be at her house later that day. I was. The older Ruth in question was a daughter of George and Louisa Hinshaw Norman. She and her twin sister were born in Surry County just before Yadkin County was formed. (This family lived in the Forbush section of Yadkin.) I would place the birth year as 1850 for the following reasons: in the 1860 census, the little girls were age 9; in the 1870 census in Jackson County, they were age 19. The twin Mary has a North Carolina death certificate that gives her birthdate as October 1 in 1849, Ruth’s gives her birthdate as 24 Oct 1848. Either month and day could be correct, but the year is wrong on both, unless the Yadkin census taker was very early in 1860, a circumstance largely unheard of. It might also be that Mary’s birthdate is correct, because John Henry Shuler’s grave stone gives his date of birth as 22 Oct 1850. At any rate, these twins were born in October, and I would argue 1850. I do not know why John Henry Shuler and Ruth moved to the Little Canada area of Jackson County in the 1880’s. But one genealogical document proves their residence there. When daughter Elsie applied for a Jackson County Delayed Birth Certificate, she stated that she was born at Argura. When daughter Novella Jane married (17 Aug 1887) to William Jasper Owen, this marriage took place “at Ruth Shular’s.” The marriage was solemnized by J. A. Galloway, M.G., and was witnessed by R. H. Brown and H. R. Queen. Good Canada names all. Furthermore, James Moore, age 42, married Ruth A. Shular, age 35, 11 Jan 1888 at Ruth A. Shular’s, performed by James T. Cathey, J.P., and witnessed by W. A. Queen and A. W. Parker. Ruth’s age should obviously be 37, but why argue that now? Presumably, these folks moved to upstate South Carolina after this second marriage. Ruth Almeda’s grave stone gives her death date as 16 Jun 1893. She is buried at Rocky Creek Baptist Church in Greenville, South Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2013 168 Carolina. Sharing the stone is her second daughter, Laura Belle Shular Roddy, wife of James Roddy. (Laura Belle, born 9 Dec 1874, died 21 Jun 1908.) I don’t know if James A. Moore were still alive when Ruth Almeda died. But it is Laura Belle’s married name that finally opened a door. On (sister) Ruth’s Ancestry.com access, the 1900 Greenville County, South Carolina census shows Laura B. Roddy as a “sister” in the home of “Myla” Ray. The other three younger sisters are there also, but listed under the surname “Roddy.” Small wonder that we could never find these girls under the Shuler or Shular surname, and we had no reason to know “Ray.” This raised a small question with the sister “Myla” until we went back to the 1880 census and found the little girl named “Cumi,” age 3. It’s not much of a stretch to make “Myla” a derivative of Cumi. This sister was actually the third oldest of the six, and was born about 1876. She first married a Ray and had children named Clara and Daniel. She then had a family of four with her second husband, William P. Mayfield, namely Edward LaFayette, Nellie, Mary, and Ruth. Myla or Milia is buried with Mayfield at Fulton Presbyterian Church in Greer, South Carolina. Her stone reads 15 July 1879 – 6 Mar 1968. Unless we have yet another census error, her stone should probably read 1876. So what do we know now that we did not know in 1992? (1) The most obvious … a death date and burial site for Ruth Almeda. (2) Oldest daughter Novella Jane Shuler Owen died 14 Jun 1911 and is buried in West View Cemetery in Liberty, Pickens County, South Carolina. A picture of her stone (as well as a picture of her as a small child) can be found on Find A Grave. She had a number of children with Owen, namely Ella Mae (ancestress of Tony Smart), Spurgeon, Bascom, William Horace, Hayden, Royal, and Ruth. (3) Second daughter Laura Belle married James Roddy. She died 21 Jun 1908, and is buried with her mother at Rocky Creek. In the 1900 census, two small children, Jennie and Vinnie, are listed under her name but divided on the census page by the names of her younger sisters. Were these two her children? (4) Third daughter Cumi L. This woman, unlike her older sisters, lived a long life. She evidently went by “Millie” or some other derivative of her formal name. We wonder two things here: did she provide a home and stability for her younger siblings with so much death in the family? Could her middle name have been Louisa after her maternal grandmother Louisa Hinshaw Norman? (5) Frances E. (Middle name Eliza after her paternal grandmother Eliza Hice Shuler?) Her married name? Descendants? Where, oh Where? (6) Martha J. (Any information welcome) Where, oh Where? (7) Elsie It is because of this youngest daughter that we knew that this family not simply disappear. She applied for – and received – a Jackson County Delayed Birth Certificate. We have already given the particulars of this certificate, but it did not provide us with her married name. Was her first name Carrie? A guardian bond issued after John Shuler’s death gives her name as “Carrie E.” We would ask the same questions as for Frances and Martha above. Where, oh Where? What are the next steps? Should any of our upstate South Carolina members see anything familiar or happen to know of these families, please let us know here at JCGS. We would like to establish contact with other families when we can learn names. I mentioned having written to Tony Smart in 1997. In a serendipitous moment, he came walking into the JCGS office on August 22. I called sister Ruth, and she came down from Cullowhee, and I introduced them. “Ruth, meet Tony Smart, great-great grandson of Ruth Almeda Norman Shuler. Tony, meet Ruth Shuler.” Tony did not miss a beat, and said, “You surely look young.” (His Ruth would have been 162 years old.) In the room at the same time were two great-great granddaughters of Rebecca Norman, so three of George and Louisa Norman’s children were represented there. (Ruth and I descend from Abraham, Rebecca’s twin.) Just to make this even more fun, a Benjamin Norman descendant has joined JCGS. He is Pete Franklin from Bay Point, California. Maybe we can all meet sometime. Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2013 169 Samuel M. Frizzell Petition North Carolina, Jackson County, Webster Township The petition of Samuel M. Frizzell respectfully showeth that he was a member of Company F 29th N.C. volunteers and served constantly with that command up to the battle of Chickamauga where advancing too far in a charge he was captured and carried to Camp Douglas and kept a prisioner (sic) to the end of the war. He was married not long after returning home at the end of the war and settled on a small mountain farm where he raised a large family, his children now are all married and gone or have homes away from him and none of them are in a condition to contribute to his support. After his children left by his labor on his farm and by peddling the fruit from a few trees and assisted by his small state pension he and his wife managed to live in comparative comfort until the 19th day of September 1904 when he was unfortunately run over by a bicicle (sic) which threw him on some rocks and broke his left hip, since which time he is unable to work and respectfully asks that his state pension be increased to such an amount as will conduce to his maintenance. Feb 20th 1906 Samuel M. Frizzell We the undersigned friends and neighbors to the petitioner named above would say that we heartily concur in his petition and respectfully add that we do not know of a more meritorious case.
