One of the very best ways to make lemonade out of those sour lemons is to do genealogy...much genealogy. We figure that this pasttime is a great way to warm the heart, if not the rest of one's self. We have great anticipation for the year 2000 whether it is the start of a new century or merely the end of an old one. We are, after all, in the midst of collecting materials for a new Heritage volume. Those articles continue to come in quite slowly, but the deadline has been extended now, so excuses are not in order. Start your JTJ reading this year with the usual combination of official records and family focus. We are pleased to start another series of Shawna Hall's work, and we hope you enjoy reading the Steinegger article as much as we enjoyed placing it in these pages. There's also a few pages on the Dills family for you to peruse, and plenty of Jackson County records to help complete your files. As always, get in touch or stay in touch with us at the Society, and offer your ideas, your expertise, and your time to your Society. Elizabeth married David McCracken, who lived in Burke County in 1778, later in Haywood. Mary married Andrew McClure, who also later lived in Haywood. Also, was James Wilson's wife a daughter of Presbyterian minister Matthew Patton? Do you read the Query board at the JCGS website? What a rich dialogue! Journeys Through Jackson January - February 2000 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m KJ KJ The very fine photograph above is shared with us by JCGS Librarian Dorris Dills Beck, from the albums of husband Sam's late aunt Miss Lou Annie Beck. The picture shows the John and Margaret Tilley Ashe family. Margaret, a daughter of Hampton and Emily Ingabo Frizzell Tilley, was thus a first cousin of Miss Beck's mother Eva Magdaline Frizzell Beck. While the children of John and Margaret are not identified by name, they would be Beulah (b. 1899), who married Ralph Ensley; Hershel (b. 1901), who married Ollie Cope; and Glenn (b. 1907), who married Dorothy Cook. We are not sure which brother is which on the back row. u Journeys Through Jackson January - February 2000 C J C G S P h o t o A l b u m < ~ The photographs on this page are shared with us by JCGS member Vee Jones. Above, a 1905 or 1906 picture of the Rich Mountain school and students. Like our other rural communities, the folks on the upper sections of Caney Fork went to church and to school in the same building. Below, the Sam Vance Jones family: Vinton sits on his father's knee, then, in order, are Leslie, Grandmother Nancy Higdon Jones, May, Ellen, and on the back, Bazz Watson, Charlie, Arthur, and Talmadge Jones. All of the younger Jones persons are half-siblings to Vee. Watson was their maternal uncle, and he is rubbed out of the picture. C Journeys Through Jackson January - February 2000 J C G S P h o t o A l b um Ky Also from the albums of Miss Lou Annie Beck, these pictures show what must have been an outstanding sight in the 40's. Above, a monster truck is hauling the "dynamo" end of a huge turbine to the Thorpe power plant above Tuckasegee. Below, backing the same apparatus into the plant itself. (Thanks to Rick Frizzell for identifying the apparatus itself.) U - u Journeys Through Jackson January - February 2000 L > C , [The P e t e r D i l l s - B e t s y P a r r i s F a m U y [Ed. In genealogy, the task (thank goodness) is never finished. There is always another generation to discover, another line of collateral cousins to delineate. When Harry Ensley, Jr., and Betty Cope Andrews straightened us out on who the children of David and Mary Parris actually were, then the work of filling in gaps could start in earnest. The editor is a descendant of two of the Parris sons, James and John. Those two were brothers to thirteen others, one of whotn was Betsy, who married Peter Dills. The following is an attempt to fill in some of the later generations and facts about this family. The best - known child of Peter and Betsy (to us, at least) was Marion Dills, and in gathering information on his family some years ago, Mr. Zernie Dills of Cullowhee shared a document with us. Referring to it as simply "that paper," Mr. Dills allowed Ruth Shuler to copy the facts from it. It was our first indication of the identity of Mary Parris, mother of this large family. JCGS member Brian Wood has again shared the "paper" with us (Zernie Dills was Brian's grandfather), and we will try to expand on certain parts, of it. Regrettably, none of us know exactly who composed the document originally. We will enclose information from the "paper" in quotation marks, then follow with our expanded information in bold type.] " Dave Parris married Polly Marr." [This is the David Parris buried in the Keener Cemetery in Sylva, b. 20 Nov 1779, d. 15 Oct 1848. His wife Mary's stone reads b. Oct 1783, d. 9 Mar 1859. Angie Shook Neumann contends that Mary's maiden name was Morrow, and a daughter of William and Ruth Morrow of Spartanburg Co., SC. Very probable, it seems.] " Their children were Betsy Dills, Alf, Jim, Dave, Sam, Wiley, John, Bill, Ruth Mintz and Polly Monteith." [ Also, Ellender Dills, Talitha Brendle, and sisters Sarah, Lucy, and Jane, who remain a complete mystery.] " Peter Dills married Betsy Parris. Their children were Polly, Didame, Marrion, Ruth Herron, Dave, Bartlett, Sarah, Betsy Sweatman, Talitha Potts, Peter, Martha Davis Conner, John, and Will." [In the 1850 Haywood County census, Peter Dills is shown as 46 years of age, Betsy as 40, Talitha 20, Ruth 18, David 15, Elizabeth 13, Bartlett 11, John 8, William 6, and Sarah 2. This leaves 5 children unaccounted for. Marion and Didama were already married by 1850, Martha was not yet born. Were Peter and Mary among the very oldest children?] " Marion Dills married Lila Ensley and Margot Potts. Their children were Bill, Polly Hall, Tom, George, Bob, Sallie Crawford, Em, Mag Smith, John, Dave, Henry and Ben." [Marion Dills was born about 1827. He married "Liley" Ensley 23 Mar 1850, and they are shown as family 1086 in the 1850 Haywood County census. After Lila's death, he married Margaret Potts Hill in Jackson County 3 Dec 1865.] "Didame Dills married Absalum Davis. Their children were Johnnie, George, Eva, Mary Jane Parris, Martha Gunter, Harriatt Hyatt, Mariah Robinson, Emily Robinson Davis, Clarinda Messer and Artie Monteith and Linnie." [Family # 466 in 1850 Haywood County is Absalom J. Davis, age 23, and his wife Didamma, age 19. Researchers may find it interesting that an 1879 Spartanburg County, SC land transaction mentions an Alfred Parris and a Didami Parris. In some way, of course, these folks are related to the Jackson County families. In the 1870 Jackson County census, Webster Township, Family #115 is A. J. Davis, age 43, Miller by occupation, wife Didamia, age 40, and children Eva E. (19), John P. (17), M.J. (15-0, M.L. (13-0, H.T. (11-0, G.J. (9-m), S.M. (7-0, Emily (5), and Clarinda (2). For the 1880 Jackson County census, Webster Township, "family #221-239 is Absalom Davis (50), Didamy (48), John (28), Harriet (20), George (19), Mariah (16); Emily (14>, Clarinda (12), Artie (10), and Linney (8).] "Talitha Dills married John Potts. They had one son, EUas" Potts." [The only other reference found so far is the 1880 census for Barker's Creek, where family #49 is Talitha Potts, age Journeys Through Jackson January - February 2000 40, and Elias, age 24. The age is incorrect for Talitha. Did John Potts die in the Civil War?] W " Ruth Dills married Cornwell Herron. Their children were Eva, Jane, and Levi Herron and George and John Raines." [ Ruth Dills was born about 1835. She is shown in the 1870 census as age 34, with children Eva Elizabeth (14), Martha Jane (12), and Levi C. (6). Had Herron died in the war also? Who are the Raines boys mentioned here?] "Dave Dills married Susanna Conner. They had one son, John." [Dave Dills definitely died in the Civil War. Susanna would marry again, to W.A. Sherrill, and from both marriages would become the ancestress of members of JCGS.] The next child (ordinal position) in the Peter and Betsy Dills family was Elizabeth Dills Sweatman. Except for the mention of her in the original list, the Dills paper makes no mention of her. Possibly this was because most of this family lived in Macon County. Elizabeth Dills married David Sweatman 11 Sep 1856 in Jackson County. In the 1870 Jackson County census, the family is listed as David (37), Elizabeth (30), Margaret A. (11), Eva L. (5), Josiah (3), and Samuel (1). At Cowee Baptist Church, David Sweatman has a stone, reading 28 Nov 1832 - 8 Nov 1914.] "Bartlett Dills married Betsy Ann Jones. Their children were Dick, Andy, Nancy Price, Dave, Hester, Dock, Lowe, and Lucius." [Bartlett Dills married Betsy Ann Jones 6 Apr 1861. A good many of this family lived in Swain County, but in the 1900 census, Betty A. Dills, born in June of 1839, was living with her son David. She reported 8 of 15 children living, and one other child, John, born Jan 1887, was also in this household.] "John Dills married Martha Gunter. They adopted a boy, Sam Watson." [John Dills is the first one in this family to have a death certificate. On file in Jackson County, it reads that he was born 13 Mar 1843, died 19 Dec 1918, and was buried in Robinson Cemetery. Did this son, Sam, go by Dills? A Samuel would marry Laura T. Cabe 18 Oct 1895 at Webster.] "Will Dills married Tine Franklin. No children." [WiUiam M. Dills married Susan Clementine Franklin. She died in Jackson County 25 Dec 1914 and was buried in Franklin Cemetery at Long Branch.] "Martha Dills married Jim Davis. Their children were Laura Shipman Shook, Anna Ward, Mag Bumgarner, and John." [This marriage took place in Jackson County, at the home of William Dills, 26 Dec 1876. In 1870, Martha was the only Dills child still at home. One wonders if Betsy Parris Dills, who had been born 9 May 1807, died during the decade of the 1870's. Martha Jane later married R.C. Conner 16 Nov 1895. She would die in 1933, and be buried in Keener cemetery. Her death certificate gives her name as "Davis" and a date of death as 5 March.] This concludes the first page of the Dills paper, referred to above by quotation marks. Since the later generations in some of these families are more familiar, we will now change format somewhat, dropping the quotation marks and bold type, except for emphasis. Remember, however, that the material presented here is a combination of that paper and the editor's own work deriving from the Parris standpoint. If the reader sees errors, especially in the latter, please correct those in a letter to the Society. There could well be many of these. - j c Journeys Through Jackson January - February 2000 The Marion Dills - Lila Ensley family: William W. In the 1900 census, Betsy Ann Jones Dills was stiU Uving, and she reported 8 of 15 children living. We have 11 Journeys Through Jackson January - February 2000 listed 12 here, four of whom must have been dead by 1900, another 3 possibly died in infancy. We beUeve that the seven we are showing with marriages, plus the brother John, ^y were all stUl alive in 1900. One problem is that the 1900 census Usts a brother John in the home with David, whUe our records show a much older John. Dorris Dills Beck contributed greatly to this Ust of the Bartlett famUy, and other information was taken from census, Swain records, and cemeteries. We might mention here that WUUam "Wimpy" Hyatt, an institution in Sylva, descends from the Richard DUls family. She is buried in Ward Cemetery on Camp Creek with Andrew. The other daughters are even less documented, except mat Laura died 22 Jan 1942 and is buried in Keener Cemetery. Final Notes: The Peter DUls and Betsy Parris family is a very large one, and we have documented only a fraction of them. The most of this famtty Uved in the Dillsboro-Dicks Creek-Barkers Creek sections of the county, except for Marion's second family, who Uved at Wayehutta, the Sweatman famUy in Macon County, and the Bartlett famUy in Swain County. It is interesting that a number of this famUy rest in Keener Cemetery, where David and Mary Morrow Parris are buried. Undoubtedly, Peter and Betsy are there too, in unmarked graves. All of the JCGS members who know Larry and Marilyn Morton know that they are nbt only very loyal JCGS members, but also two of the most gracious, accomodating persons we have been privileged to meet. When we learned that Marilyn was in possession of the steamer trunks mat belonged'to her maternal grandparents, we knew there was a story here. After patiently explaining to us that they were filled with memorabilia and items of sentimental value, rather than with great treasures of genealogical significance, Marilyn still agreed to go through the trunks and share the contents with us. The results are more than fascinating. They make us think of where things are, why they are there, why we have kept them at all. We are most grateful for Marilyn's generosity and patience with an unusual request.] Inventory of Steamer Trunk of Wilhelmina Roesch Steinegger (25 Aug 1863 - 29 May 1941) Marilyn's words: "My Grandmother Wilhelmina (Minnie) Roesch Steinegger brought her possessions to America in this trunk when she immipratp.fi from Nollingen, Baden, Germany to Ellis Island, New York in March 1894 on La Bretagne which sailed from Havre, France. We are again very grateful to Marilyn for allowing us this invasion of privacy. We are amazed at the similarities found in these lists to the contents of the "cedar chest" which sat in our home. Certain personal items are precious to folks, especially when they remind us of the persons who once used them and considered them valuable. The Steinegger lists, however, go a step further because of the history of the family, and they represent a very real chapter in the lives of first - and second - generation Americans. We are, as well, impressed by the humor (home permanent curlers), the newspapers commemorating the great milestones of life, and yes, the genealogical treasures which really did exist in the cases of photographs of German relatives, postcard albums, prayer books, and scrapbooks.] 29 Journeys Through Jackson January - February 2000 J C G S L i b r a r y A c q u i s i t i o ns [Ed.
