Members and non-members are invited to submit genealogical materials for publication, with the understanding that the editor reserves the right to edit these materials for genealogical content, clarity, or taste. The Society assumes no responsibility for errors of fact that may be contained in submissions, and except where noted the opinions expressed are not those of the editor or of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices for other nonprofit groups. FROM THE EDITOR "He's great." "The best speaker I've ever heard." "Hilarious and informative." "In a class by himself." So went the reactions of those in attendance at the lectures by Dr. George K. Schweitzer at WCU on May 31. Dr. Schweitzer first spoke of westward migration patterns from the point of view of "zee French fur trader." His second lecture centered on North Carolina research, told from the view of an eighteenth-century Guilford County barrister. The morning was a rare treat. The Society is now formulating plans to begin a cemetery book. While some of you may never have visited in Jackson County, others of you have either lived or visited here. Please read the cemetery list in this issue, and point out to us any burying places we have missed. Of particular interest would be small, abandoned family cemeteries that you might know about. The data collection for such a volume is the easy part, because genealogists love to stomp around in graveyards. One troublesome aspect of such a project in our area is that some cemeteries literally no longer exist. Because mountain real estate is a desired commodity, some callous persons (particularly from one state which shall remain nameless) will purchase the property and level the cemetery for new summer homes or the like. We must be vigilant. As we enter the season of family reunions and church homecomings, we should attend as many as possible. These are, as we all know, feasts. But aside from the wonderful feasting in the literal sense, we may also look at these occasions as spiritual and genealogical feasts, renewing our commitment to both Maker and fellow man. Remember that in August, we in the Society eat together at our annual picnic and name our Holden Award winner. Nominations for that award are enclosed in this issue. Also in this issue, "feast" your eyes on the Cathey family materials submitted by JCGS member Marty Grant; read Dorris Beck's account of the Dills brothers in the War Between the States; see more of Ruth Shuler's work with Delayed Birth Certificates; and now that your appetite is whetted, read as we conclude the Frizzell grandchildren series, and begin our new series on Jackson County World War I registrants. Trudy writes, "One problem I wish to bring up. In the death certificates of persons born before 1900, Alfred Coward's death date is listed as 1924. I'm not questioning the information as listed, because this is the date also given on his grave stone in the David Rogers Cemetery (across the street from University Inn). This man was known as "Uncle Alf." He was a slave of my great-grandfather, Nathan Coward. I was born in 1923 and remember Uncle Alf quite well, so he couldn't have died in 1924. Anna Deyermond of Cullowhee remembers him. My sister, who was born in 1926, also remembered him. When we would visit my grandmother at Cullowhee, Uncle Alf would come riding up on a mule to visit my mother and her sister, who usually came with us. I think his death date was more likely to » / have been 1934. Uncle Alf married Eliza Rogers, a slave girl who was part of Jane Rogers' dowry when she married Nathan Coward. That is why they are buried in the Rogers Cemetery." [Ed. Can a descendant of Alfred and Eliza, or another person from Cullowhee shed some light on this? One wonders if family members checked official records when erecting the stone, and thus perpetuated an error.] JCGS member Lavine G. Callicott, 5807 Delta Lane Suitland, MD 20746-3839, is doing research on her Green/Greene family and has joined our Society. She would also like to purchase a copy of THE HISTORY OF JACKSON COUNTY (Williams, ED.) and asks of its availability. Historical Association members, can you help? Dorris Dills Beck, 590 Dillsboro Rd. Sylva, NC 28779 reports that the Buchanan Bible that belonged to Roy Buchanan and which has family information for Rev. Nathan Thompson and his wife Esther is now in the WCU Archives. Roy had arranged for this prior to his death. Dorris passes along that she has the genealogical information from this Bible, and she will be glad to share this with interested persons. Dorris also shares this with us. Persons who have enough information about an ancestor's arrival in America to request the National Archives to search their records should request their form NATF-81 from National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) 7th and Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W. Washington, D.C. 20408 A search request reply may take 6-8 months. Ky 55 L / L < Danny Jones, 3100 Greywood Ln. Matthews, NC 28105 seeks parents, family of Mary Ann Duncan, wife of Milton M. Bryson, Mary Ann b. 18 Jan 1830 McDowell Co., d. 20 Aug 1901 Cullowhee. Danny also seeks info/children of David Miller, wife Sarah Elliott. David died 1840-1845, Sarah married Alexander Henry in Feb 1846, lived in Haywood Co. before Jackson was formed. Danny also points out several errors in the Matilda Brooks death certificate for 1927. He says that the death certificate is hard to read, but that the informant was Mrs. Dona Jones, rather than Mrs. Dave Jones. Mrs. Ardona Melvina Brooks Jones was Danny's grandmother, and he reports that the information she gave as informant is incorrect. Danny corrects this as follows: " John Henry is Matilda's brother. We have fought this information for years. This is the one I have trouble with. Her parents are either Alexander Henry and Sarah, or David Miller and Sarah. Still trying to work this one out. I have checked the census records for ALL John Henrys in NC and there is not one'in the state that could fit as father of Matilda. Either wrong wife, wrong place, or wrong age. This is wonderful information. Ruth has done an excellent job and is providing great information." Frances Dooley Russell, PO Box 312 Queen City, TX 75572 seeks father of Calvin Fore, b. 1787 SC married Rosannah (Eller?) NC. died in NC. Father possibly Archeleus Fore. Can anyone help with proof? New JCGS member Jerry Hatch, 657 W. Melrose Ave. Chicago IL 60657-3414 seeks parents of and other background info (or references to same) for Edward Douglas Davis (1827-1911) and Nathan Allen (1813-1888). Also seeks more information about ancestors James Fisher (1794-13 Jul 1869) and wife Mary Gillon (1794-5 May 1855). Jerry writes, "All we know at this point is that James and Mary Fisher are buried in the Old Field Cemetery, Beta, Sylva Twp., Jackson Co., NC. That data is from a Mormon microfilm..." [Ed. All of these names are very familiar to Jackson Countians. You Davis, Allen, Fisher descendants please correspond with Jerry.] Davy C. Campbell, 828 Dewitt St. Syracuse, NY 13203 seeks info on John Cogdill, lived Swain Co. 1880. Among cildren was Harriet (Hattie) Cogdill, who married David Crockett Campbell in Swain in December, 1899. Father of John possibly Joseph Cogdill. All five were taken prisoners at Cumberland Gap on September 9,1863. The oldest son, John Ramsay Dills (11/6/1830-3/15/1875), according to one record, entered service as a volunteer on August 31,1861, as a private in Co. F., 29th Regiment, North Carolina Troops. He is listed on a muster-in roll dated July 14,1862 as a 1st Lieutenant in Capt. Rufus A. Edmonston's Company, 62d Regiment, North Carolina Infantry (State Troops). (This company subsequently became Company H, 62d Regiment). A letter to his father dated October 25,1862 gives his location as Camp Carter, E. Tennessee. Before July 24,1863, John Ramsay had been promoted to Captain as evidenced by his pay voucher. He was taken prisoner at Cumberland Gap on September 9,1863, and was taken by way of the Military Prison at Louisville, Kentucky, to Johnson's Island, Ohio, where he appears on a roll of prisoners of war dated September 23,1863. He signed an Oath of Allegiance to the U. S. at Johnson's Island on June 11, 1865, and was released. John Ramsay is described on his military records as having florid complexion, dark hair, grey eyes, and as 6 feet 3 inches tall. He and his wife, Margaret Lucinda Allman (7/1/1840-9/9/1897), had three daughters: Emma, bom April 14,1858; Martha Ida, born August 23,1860; and Alma, born April 28,1862. John Ramsay and Margaret Lucinda are buried in Stillwell Cemetery, Webster, NC. The second child of Phillip and Mary, Andrew Jackson Dills (3/13/1832-1/2/1865), joined Captain Rufus A. Edmonston's Company, 62d Regiment, North Carolina Infantry, as a private on July 14,1862, at the age of 30. (This company became Co. H., 62d Regiment, N. C. Infantry). In May-June, 1862, the roll does not indicate whether he was present or absent. In September-October, 1862, he is listed as ^ "absent without leave", but he was present in November, 1862. In May, 1863, he was received into the 62d Regiment, N. C. Infantry (State Troops) in exchange for James E. S. Slatten. This exchange was arranged by George's brother, 1 st Lieutenant John Ramsay Dills.
