Members and non-members are invited to submit genealogical materials for publication, with the understanding that the editor reserves the right to edit these materials for genealogical content, clarity, or taste. The Society assumes no responsibility for errors of fact that may be contained in submissions, and except where noted, the opinions expressed are not those of the editor or of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices for other non-profit groups. From the Editor We start a new year in the Jackson County Genealogical Society, one that holds much promise and reason for cautious optimism, but also one that promises no small amount of hard work and demanding - adjustments on our part. We of course are eager to move when our new offices are ready in the Jackson ^j County Library/Old Courthouse, but we also face the dilemma that you have undoubtedly already noticed with the flyer accompanying your publication. We will NOT be shutting down our Society, except in the most literal sense of closing our physical location. For now, our post office address stays the same. We have the usual fine mixture for your reading enjoyment this time. Unusual for us, we have included two newspaper articles in this issue, because both dealt with JCGS members. Many thanks to our members Jackie Matthews Allums, Rick Frizzell, Norman McCall, Jason Gregory, Dorris Dills Beck, Barbara Shelton Smith, Ken Nicholson, Larry Morton, Walter Middleton, Betty Queen Monteith, James Kennedy, Ruth Crawford Shuler, Everett and Elizabeth Wilson, and Deanne Gibson Roles. Thanks also to Linda Fisher Stephens, Lynn Hotaling, Joanne Brown Bryson, Kelly Donaldson, Beryl Bailey, and Linda Owen Anders. Along with our abstractions of official records, these contributors (both members and non-members) in some way helped to make this issue possible. In the obligatory paragraph about the weather, we will say only that enough snow is enough. Bring on the springtime, and we will, of course, complain about some other imperfection. Barbara Shelton Smith is the latest Holden Award winner. Barbara has donated several of her genealogy compilations, notably her work on the Smith family and her annotations of the graves at Cullowhee Baptist Church Cemetery. She has also been a contributor to Journeys Through Jackson. Because of her generosity with her personal library, Barbara was also a recipient of our Patron Award. Dorris Dills Beck was honored with the Daniel Deitz Award. Her untiring efforts with maintaining our library and her professionalism toward the office she holds in the group were recognized. Her comment on receiving the award: "This is so important because of what Daniel Deitz himself meant to this group." Jean Crawford Brown was also a Patron Award winner. Jean does not live close, but she is in Jackson County enough to help with Society projects, and she has always been very generous to our group. Her son Matthew Brown was on hand to accept her award. In Sympathy We express deepest sympathy to Dollie Bumgarner, Alatha Cantrell, and Freddie Frizzell, all of whom have recently lost loved ones. Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2011 I n M e m o r i a m . . . G e o r g e H a r r y E n s l e y J r . You were taken from us far too soon, even though the fact of y o u r passing was delayed b y insidious illness for some time. You introduced us to computer genealogy when MS DOS was the means to operate one of these wonderful machines. You shared y o u r love of family, your love of words, y o u r love of a good laugh in t h e years t h a t you were given to us. You showed u p in N o r t h Carolina from California or from Florida w i t h good stories, incredibly high s t a n d a r d s of accuracy in genealogy, and with a nice w o r d for everyone. You once referred to a p a r t i c u l a r family and its m a r i t a l predicaments as a " q u a d r a t i c equation." We never see records of t h a t family without laughing a t your jokes about t h e amount of Maalox y o u consumed trying to sort t h r o u g h them. You were not a young man when you became interested in your Dad's genealogy and his fascination with his Ensley roots. What you did was to t a k e his work and b r i n g it into another era. You corresponded with an amazing number of people about genealogy, and you were convinced t h a t the answers were there, if we could only find them. You thought no more about braving snaky u n d e r b r u s h in Georgia looking for grave stones of your W a r e ancestors t h a n you did of hiking u p a hillside in North Carolina, and we were privileged to be in your company on these forays. You were successful and distinguished in your professional life, but you never allowed that to interfere with your affection for your mountain people. You had many memories of Cope C r e e k from your childhood summers there. Our lives w e r e r i c h e r for knowing you. She is shown here with her six children (clockwise) Goleman (Gole), Carlettie, Baxter, Jack, Jeter, and baby Richard. Alice died not long after this picture was taken. Her daughter Carlettie also died quite young. Baxter and Jack raised their families in Jackson County, Gole in Rome, Georgia. The two youngest sons moved to Washington state. Picture shared by Linda Fisher Stephens, one of Baxter's granddaughters. KJ Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2011 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m This picture, also shared by Linda, shows Martin Hoyle with his second wife Ellen Parthenia Henry, daughter of Yade and Artie Elvira Hooper Henry. We believe the children in the back are Gertie, Delos, Christine, and Eva. Allie might be the little girl on her father's knee, but we are unsure about the little boy and the baby. Maybe Al Hooper or Virginia Wilson will be so kind as to correct us; both are lineal descendants of this family. Below, another Scotts Creek family, that of Florence Wilson Parris and her children Martha Jane and Hattie, then Claude and Sampson, then Mae and Ida, and finally John, Charlie, and Zeb. Picture shared by Dixie Parris, copied by Rick Frizzell. C Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2011 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m KJ yj JCGS member Norman McCall, who submitted this picture, says that he knows the identities only of Clarence Hooper, at left in the first row, and of Blanche Hooper, second from left in the second row. Norman also writes that "someone apparently wasn't fond of the girl (front row)." Yep, her appearance has been slightly altered. We would guess that this is a student group, possibly a literary society from Cullowhee Normal or some such institution. Miss Hooper was certainly in a better mood than her peers, although a couple of the others are not quite so grim as these old pictures usually show. The page is very dim, and the initials are nearly impossible to read. We certainly notice that our great-great grandmother Crawford (D.A. Clayton) went to school exactly one day that year, but we might also add that she was only five or six years old...we are not sure how much philosophy she might have absorbed, and too bad her father (who signed the document) didn't sit in on a few of the orthography lessons...maybe the finished page would not be so difficult to decipher. Flippancy aside, these lists are valuable for persons descended from those families in the lower Scotts Creek section. We can see many persons whose names are familiar. The L.M. Clayton was actually a daughter named Eliza, whose fate after 1850 we have never ascertained. Note also that this is an 1852 document...Jackson County was technically in existence, but had yet to institute all of the machinery for government to operate. But we doubt that this school was state-operated; while that is possible, the fifteen dollars per month probably came from the parents.] Item 4 This is a photograph of the flag of Thomas' Legion. A note on the page states that the flag is at The North Carolina Department of Archives and History. [Notes: For those unfamiliar with the history, William H. Thomas formed his own army in the American Civil War. The companies were made up of North Carolina mountain residents, with a few Tennesseans included. Several of these companies were composed of Cherokee Indians. See Vernon Crow's book Storm in the Mountains for an account of this unusual military history.] Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2011 Item 5 \y Aug. 23,1838 State of N Carolina Haywood County This day personally came Scroop Enloe a citizen of said county before me Jesse C. Certainly there are those persons who believe that he was not a real friend to the Cherokee...others place him as one of the few white men who ever had Cherokee interests at heart. Scholarly historians may analyze all of the documents and make their own arguments. For our purposes as genealogists, we recognize that the Enloes and the Cockerhams were two of the influential families of the northern sections of Jackson County. Their words would have carried some weight in legal affairs. As we have noted at various times in this publication, Jesse C. Cockerham and his family moved to western Missouri. It probably means that Sherrill was in debt to Thomas and King and saw this as a means to an end. Department of Transportation Dec. 2 dedicated the bridge on N.C. 107 over the East Fork of the Tuckaseigee River in Tuckasegee as the "T. Walter Middleton Bridge." The dedication ceremony took place in the lobby of the Jackson County Aging Services Facility, where family and friends, along with state and local officials, gathered to honor the Rev. Walter Middleton for the contributions he's made to Jackson County. Jackson County commissioners Jan. 4 unanimously passed a resolution in support of naming the bridge for Middleton. A Tuckasegee native, Middleton is a graduate of Cullowhee High School, worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps and is a veteran of the Pacific campaign in World War II. It was there that Middleton was captured and was held as a prisoner of war for three and a 19 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2011 half years, surviving the Bataan Death March. Now retired, Middleton, who received several medals and commendations for his military service, served as a minister in the area for 42 years and has written several books. NCDOT State Highway Administrator Terry Gibson, who gave the keynote address, termed the occasion "a great day" and said he'd enjoyed reading Middleton's books. "I'm pleased to be here honoring a man with lasting impact," Gibson said. Naming the bridge in Tuckasegee after Middleton is fitting, because the bridge, like Middleton, is a part of that community. "The bridge tells the story of the community, and Walter Middleton is a storyteller," Gibson said. "It is my hope that in the same way Walter tells stories, the bridge's signs will tell people the story of one man who's had an impact on his community." In addition, naming the bridge after a veteran honors all those who've served in the armed forces. "I declare this bridge the T. Walter Middleton Bridge," Gibson said, adding that naming a bridge or section of highway after an individual is the highest honor NCDOT can bestow. One of Middleton's books, "Trouble at the Forks," is set in his home community and chronicles the bloody Civil War years that brought hardships to the mountains as deserters and renegades raided farms, stealing and destroying provisions isolated families - mostly women and children - needed to survive. It includes information on the infamous Hooper - Watson feud and is based on stories Middleton heard from his grandfather, David Middleton. Walter Middleton is also the author of "Flashbacks: Prisoner of War in the Phillipines," a memoir of his survival of the Bataan Death March. His first book, "Qualla: Home of the Middle Cherokee Settlement," traces Cherokee history and lore in the Qualla Boundary and draws on stories told by his Cherokee grandmother, Mariah, who was David Middleton's wife. Others who paid tribute to Walter Middleton last week included then- Commissioner Tom Massie, who welcomed attendees, recognized state and local officials and termed the bridge dedication " a well-deserved honor for a life well lived." Another retired minister, former Harris Regional Hospital Chaplain Jack Hinson, gave the invocation and called Walter Middleton "one of the best among us - a man with a lifetime of service: a patriot, minister and writer." Former Smoky Mountain High School football coach Boyce Deitz, now a field representative for Congressman Heath Shuler, brought greetings from Shuler and a copy of the tribute that Shuler had read into the Congressional Record. "Few people make the impact on the community that Mr. Middleton has," Deitz said. "It's an honor to be part of the program." State Transportation Board member Conrad Burrell of Sylva, served as emcee and called Walter Middleton "one of the finest men I've ever known." Also on the program was N.C. Rep. Phil Haire of Sylva, who had high praise for the honoree. "What an example his life has been," Haire said. "Walter Middleton was a mountain boy, and when called, he served his country and served it honorably. The life he brought back to Tuckasegee and Jackson County made an impact. It's appropriate to name a bridge for him, because his life has been like a river - it flows out to affect everyone." The longest tribute was provided by Walter Middleton's son, retired educator Arlin Middleton of Sylva, who said he feels "blessed to have my dad as long as I have" and that his dad has always given him good advice. \ J KJ ^J 20 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2011 ^ According to Arlin Middleton, Walter Middleton's grandmother used to tell him that she wanted him to "be somebody." "That perplexed him," Arlin Middleton said. "I've heard him say he wished he knew what she was talking about" He also said that his father's survival instinct is stronger than most folks, and that one time he'd asked his dad if he was born with it. In reply, Walter Middleton told him the following story. "My sister and I were going to the Rocky Hollow School. One afternoon one of the older boys who was ahead of us walking home found a bee's nest and stirred them up. Thelma and I walked through and got stung. After I got Thelma taken care of, I chased that boy down, spun him around and busted his nose. That's when I knew I had it." Arlin Middleton said the greatest thing he could say about his dad is how much good advice he's handed out over the years. "When I was in high school, I asked him if he hated the Japanese for what they'd done to him during World War H," Arlin Middleton said. "'Well, I'll tell you son, I don't hate the Japanese,' he said. 'I had to ask the Lord to take that hate out of my heart.'" TJNC-TV was interested in making a documentary on Middleton and his WWH experiences, and the whole family was pleased and excited with the idea, Arlin Middleton said. However, when he asked his dad how it was going, his father told him it looked like it wasn't going to happen. When he asked why, his dad said if there was to be a documentary, they had to give him time to give his testimony. "When I asked my dad why he couldn't do the documentary anyway, he said, "Well I'll tell you son, it was the only decision I could make. How can you on the one hand talk about death and dying without talking about the grace of God? How could I talk about the evil of war without talking about the wonderful love of God that lifts us up?'" In closing, Arlin Middleton looked at his father and said, "If your grandma could see you now, she'd say 'you are somebody.'" 21 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2011 T r a n s c r i p t i o n o f N a t h a n D e H a r t ' s L e t t e r \ y [Ed. We continue in this issue with the 1880 census for Jackson County. The census taker was Jno. O. Wallace for this district, which was, like the families in our immediately previous two issues, in the Qualla community. The first number in the left column is the house number, the second the family number. The states in the right columns represent the person's place of birth, followed by his/her father's place of birth, then his/her mother's place of birth. We have omitted the literacy columns this time, because it is unclear just what was being recorded. We have juxtaposed the names to read first name first. Was Elvira Wallace a Conley? 02) (Family # 2-2) Stephen and Margaret Miller are buried in Campground Cemetery. 03) (Family # 3-3) John and Eliza Conley are buried in the Conley Cemetery mentioned above. 04) (Family # 5-6) Josephine Zachary married John Wallace in 1897 in Dillsboro. 05) (Family #6-8) Octa Fowler married J.R. Dills in 1896 in Dillsboro. They are buried in Parris Cemetery. Eugenie Fowler married J.C. Sutton in 1898 in Dillsboro. Cordelia Fowler married Phillip Sutton in 1895 in Dillsboro. They are buried in Locust Field Cemetery. 06) (Family # 7-9) Sarah Keener was the widow of Rev. Ulrich Keener. They are buried in Campground Cemetery. 07) (Families 9-12, 10-13, 11-14) Notice that in 9-12, there is a son named McLin. The next house is McLin Kerr. He and his wife Lucinda have the only marked graves at the Kerr Cemetery, near the Smoky Mountain Raceway. In the census, it is obvious from the spelling (Keer) that this family pronounced the name much like the word "care" rather than the more familiar "car." What ever happened to the other members of this family? In 1880, Jesse's wife and some of his children were not well. Did they succumb to some epidemic? This is not a surname that is common in our county. 08) (Family # 13-16) We don't know who this Levicy Bumgarner is, but we wonder if she were the widow of one of the boys mentioned in our Henry Bumgarner article in the Winter 2010 issue of this publication. Certainly # 15-19, and 16-20 were part of this family. 09) (Family #18-22) Members of this Farley family are buried in Worley Cemetery on Sunset Farms Road. 10) (Family # 26-24) Elmina Hughes and Cam Hughes are buried in Thomas Memorial Cemetery at Qualla. 11) (Family #12-15) Louzena Hughes married W.F. Battle in 1891 at Qualla. They are buried in Thomas Memorial Cemetery. 12) Some of the names are especially difficult to read because of dim pages, smudges, or just that the names themselves are quite unusual. \ J \^> 32 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2011 C S ^ O n e W o o d r i n g F a m i l y . . . F r o m J a c k s o n C o u n t y t o O k l a h o m a We were pleased to make the acquaintance of new JCGS member James Kennedy when he and other family members visited here last fall. James has sent materials pertinent to his Woodring family, and we have used these, along with other sources, to create the following article. In very early issues of Journeys Through Jackson, Ruth Shuler abstracted items of genealogical importance from issues of Sylva's local newspaper, The Tuckasigee Democrat. From the issue of 5 Mar 1890: "Mr. Charles Woodring, who already has several children in the west, left here last Friday with another son, Joab Woodring, wife and six children, J.B. Woodring, James Slatton, Derry Fullbright, Cole Cope and his wife, all bound for Oklahoma. Mrs. Charles Woodring remained here with other children, who expect to leave next fall." Several years later, in the issue of 29 Mar 1893, the following appeared: "A batch of emigrants, consisting of 'Uncle' Jack Slatton, Polly Brown, John Woodring and family, Jas. M. Wilson, J.F. McCall, and John Wilson left here yesterday for Texas and other southwest points." The above photographs appeared in the Spring 2010 issue of this publication. Submitted by JCGS member Claude A. Wilson of Oroville CA, the persons were identified as Charles David Woodring (1817 - 1901) and his wife Sarah Ann Morgan (1824 - 1904). James Kennedy differs on the identification of the man, saying that this is Charles David Woodring's oldest son David Charles Woodring (1844-1925). We will allow these cousins to argue this point...we are just glad to have the picture. The other picture we had used was of Charles Woodring's second son, Jacob. In the book Hamilton 100 Years, a volume published by the Hamilton Pioneer Museum in Hamilton, Washington, we find a number of references to Jacob M. Woodring. On pages 143 and 144, a rather detailed biography appears, containing important genealogical data 33 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2011 as well as the story of Jacob Woodring's death in the line of duty as a law enforcement ^j officer 27 Nov 1904. On page 77 of the same book, one can find the same Jacob and other family members listed in the Hamilton Cemetery. The following is photocopied from sheets sent to us by James Kennedy. They appear to be from a Woodring book, because various pages are numbered, but we do not have the title page or the author's name. Other pages are from Internet genealogy, and would need to be verified independently. Plata Way, Sandy, UT 84092 34 c Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2011 In the same packet of materials sent by James Kennedy and from the same source, we find a story written about this Woodring family. We excerpt that story here, changing only some punctuation in the interest of clarity. "Dave, Charles and Sarah's oldest son, joined the CSA when he was age eighteen. Dave was captured and sent to Camp Douglas at Chicago, Illinois, where he remained a prisoner until the end of the Civil War...Joseph and Jacob also joined the Confederates. Joseph was age fourteen and loaded the supply wagons. John joined the Confederates later." "Dave had made it back to North Carolina sometime after the 1870 Census, and married sometime in 1871 or early 1872. The Woodrings began rebuilding their lives. Dave homesteaded some state land. His brothers John and Joseph and Charles bought and sold much land in the 1880's in Jackson County." "All of the boys of age and their families except for Charles Luther, Dave, and their parents with their remaining family, had gone to Texas to help build the railroad across Texas...The Woodring brothers were living in Callahan County, Texas. John's first wife died in Texas...John and his children returned to North Carolina." "When news came of the Indian Territory openings, the Woodrings decided to move to Oklahoma. The first recorded...were Joseph, who was going by the name of Joab, and his brother Albert (Sid), who were living near Percell in 1890. Dave, Charles, and Saryann and their families all moved to Cleveland County the next year by wagon train." "The Oklahoma Woodrings settled in a mile-long stretch of adjoining farm land on Maguire Road, due east of Noble, Oklahoma. During those times, there were the communities of Maguire, Hall, and Few Clothes, which was later renamed Needmore." "The Needmore community was a Woodring community. Dollie B. Woodring, the daughter of John, married James Orlen Etheridge and they named their general store Few Clothes. Later they needed more of everything, so they called it Needmore. Joseph and Dave added to the community. Joseph built a blacksmith shop and sharpened plow shares, shod horses, and did the iron work for the community. Dave built a mill to grind the corn and feed for the community. John and his son Otto operated a cotton gin." "Eventually, only Dave and Joseph remained in the community. Some went to California, some remained in Texas, and some in other parts of Oklahoma. Several died young and were buried in the Fairview-Maguire Cemetery. It is located one quarter mile due north of the community of Maguire...There is nothing at all remaining of the Needmore community." "Only three Woodrings were living in the area (in 1991). They were the children of Charles Columbus "Bud" Woodring (the son of Joseph [Joab] Woodring, and all were nearing age ninety. Ernest Raymond "Gube" Woodring, Chester Leon "Chick" Woodring, and their sister Maude Woodring Kennedy." "Today, Woodrings are spread across the United States and the Woodring surname is still rare." 35 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2011 \ > Photographs in this Woodring family. One of the best things about living in our area is that we have several very fine newspapers to read every week. We were especially pleased when JCGS members Everett and Elizabeth Wilson brought a copy of this paper to us. The focus is on the Norton and Wilson families of southern Jackson County. We reprint the article here with the gracious permission of Kelly Donaldson, author of the account and editor of the Crossroads Chronicle, where the original article appeared in the issue of 27 Oct 2010.] H u s b a n d , w i f e r e u n i t e d a t N o r t o n C e m e t e r y By Kelly Donaldson Editor Since his death in 1937, Burris Norton's body rested in the Norton Cemetery in Glenville near other family members, but without his wife who had passed away a few years earlier in 1899. Sarah Arlena Wilson Norton was buried in Morganton, N.C, and recently, family members decided the two should be reunited here in Glenville. So on Oct. 7, 2010, family members had Sarah's body exhumed from Morganton and brought to Norton 41 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2011 Cemetery in Glenville, where she was laid to rest again, next to her husband Burris. A memorial service was held, attended by Rev. Everett and Elizabeth Wilson, Roderick L. Norton, Dixie Watson Aldredge, Carol and Gina Hileman, Frank and Marilyn Henson, Freda McCall, Julie Norton Dennis and son Garrett, Judy Childers Hollis, Floyd Buchanan, and Paul Norton. After remarks by Rev. Wilson, the songs "Go Rest High On That Mountain" and "Amazing Grace," were sung. R.L. Norton of Brevard and his brother Paul are their great-grandsons and were pivotal in bringing Sarah back to Glenville. "Yeah, they lived here and had four children," said R.L. Norton. "The youngest was about five when she passed away and my grandfather was the oldest, Roger Norton. She would be my great-grandmother. I thought she was buried in Whiteside Cove. That's what my brother thought too. But he lives in Marion and he went down and found her grave. My sister had told him about it." After Paul had found the grave of Sarah, the two brothers worked to get Sarah back beside Burris. "All of us agreed to do it, " said R.L. Norton. "We had to go through the health department to get a permit." Sarah was born in 1860 and died in 1899, while her husband Burris was born on Feb. 20, 1856 and died March 7, 1937. \ J [JCGS Ed. To extend the genealogy here a little more, Sarah Arlena was a daughter of A.J. Wilson and his wife Martha Bryson. After Wilson's death, Martha married Jesse Henson from Buncombe County. Sarah is buried at Old Brasstown Baptist Church Cemetery near Young Harris, Georgia, where Alice and T.L. (Thomas Loranze) are also buried. William Wilson, who was the oldest son of Manson and Brunetta Cockerham Wilson, is buried at Ebenezer Baptist Church near Blairsville, Georgia. Also, see Jackson County Heritage, Volume I, Article #573 for an account submitted by Oliver Deitz. It gives Julius Wilburn Deitz and Margaret Frady as the parents of Thomas Loranze Deitz. The Alvin Deitz family lived in Jackson County. We have known members of this family for a lifetime. Ky 46 Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2011 L I n d e x f o r JTJ, V o l . X X I , N o .
