Members and non-members are invited to submit genealogical materials for publication, with the understanding that the editor reserves the right to edit these materials for genealogical content, clarity, or taste. The Society assumes no responsibility for errors of fact that may be contained in submissions, and except where noted, the opinions expressed are not those of the editor or of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices from other non-profit groups. From the Editor As usual, we will start with the weather. Here in Jackson County, the weather changes from day to day. We have had some snow and ice, but, signs of spring are already appearing. In the next issue, we plan on running all the members names with contact information and families of interest. If you have not updated your information in a while, now would be a good time to do so. Each issue from here on out will contain, depending on space available, all new members that have joined since the last JTJ. That will give all members, new and old, a chance to see if there is anyone they would like to contact and share information with. As always, our Society owes its success to our members. You have graciously submitted and donated materials for articles and ideas for articles to the Editor. We appreciate all feedback that is given. This publication belongs to the membership as a whole and we hope that it is something that you read and reread several times. If you find yourself with a few hours of free time on your hands, please consider volunteering at the Society. We are always glad to have people come in to share their knowledge of our area and our families. Contact the JCGS office if you would like to volunteer. Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2015 2 JCGS Photo Album On a recent warm spring day, the Keener Cemetery marker identifying the final resting place of one of Sylva’s founding fathers, General Erastus Rawley (E.R.) Hampton, shines in the noonday sun. In recognition of Sylva’s 125th anniversary, the stone was cleaned and reset by the Town of Sylva. An adjacent plaque designating Hampton’s historical contributions will be installed in 2015. Hampton’s daughter, Mae is credited with selecting the name “Sylva”, after one of her father’s hired hands, William D. Selvey (Sylva). The picture above is one found in the numerous pictures that have been donated to the society. It is a picture of Grady Parker of Cullowhee as a young man. The picture to the left is of Samuel Manus Beck (1 Jul 1861-12 Mar 1954) and his wife, Eva Magdalin Frizzell (13 Jun 1861-25 Feb 1954.) They were married in Sunday, 10 Jun 1883. They reared their family in the East Fork Community. They are the grandparents of long time JCGS member, Sam Beck. Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2015 3 JCGS Photo Album The two pictures are of the Balsam Grove School located in the Caney Fork Community. They are part of the pictures donated by member, Loreda Davis, and are stored as the Wood Collection at the JCGS office. Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2015 4 JCGS Photo Album To the left is Richard Mealus and Irona Texada Mathis Broom with their granddaughter, Brenda Broom. To the bottom is a picture of Richard and Irona’s family with the addition of Bob Mathis. These pictures were donated to the society by Martha L. Gross. Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2015 5 JCGS Photo Album This is a familiar sight in Jackson County. Many of the men here worked in the logging business at one time or another. Both of these pictures are part of the Wood Collection. Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2015 6 JCGS Photo Album The soldier above is listed as Dick Warlick. The man and woman above are Coot and Ora Wood. The picture below is of workers at a logging camp. No location is known and the only identification on the picture is the name Mack Cook. These photographs are also of the Wood Collection. Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2015 7 Doctor’s Daily Journal ED: Recently member Anna Frazier brought the 1915 Daily Journal of Dr. C. Z. Chandler to our attention. We have decided to publish the days that he has completed in the journal. All spelling and abbreviations are as written in book. Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2015 19 Jackson County Genealogical Society 2014 Annual Meeting The Jackson County Genealogical Society held its 2014 Annual Meeting on December 11 at East Sylva Baptist Church. It was a brisk, cold evening. The luminaries were aglow, the Christmas Spirit was n h3e air, and close to 100 people enjoyed an overflowing bounty of homemade casseroles, meats, breads vegetables and desserts. The evening had many highlights. The Genealogical Society installed new officers for 2015. They are: Tim Osment President Lynn Hotaling Vice-President Jason Gregory Vice-President, IT Teresa Deitz Manring Treasurer Mary Buchanan Smith Secretary Karen Nicholson Office Manager Marie Clark Librarian Deanne Roles Web Master Sanji Talley Watson Editor Charter President, Ruth C. Shuler, presided over the installations and noted that for the first time in its history, in 2015 the Jackson County Genealogical Society had no charter members on its board of directors. Ruth assured the new group that the former board members were “not going anywhere, would be watching closely, and that their loosely-organized ‘Council of Wisdom” would be available for advice, guidance and information.” Jean and Jim Scott were recognized for their continued support of the Society and the annual Scott Foundation Scholarships. Carol and David Bryson were presented the Holden Award for their contributions to the study of Genealogy. The Brysons used oral histories, archive records, land grants, and historical map collections to create a map of the pioneer settlement of Hamburg Village, now under the waters of Lake Glenville. Copies of the map are on display in the Cashiers and Sylva Libraries. They also published the comprehensive book, Glenville and Cashiers … From the Records, detailing the early histories of both communities. Ruth Shuler was presented the Deitz Award for her many exceptional contributions to the Jackson County Genealogical Society. In addition, Ruth joined outgoing board members, President Kenneth Nicholson and Vice-President Bill Crawford, in receiving plaques acknowledging their many years of service. To close the evening, the Jackson County Genealogical Society announced the establishment of the Robert Larry Crawford Scholarship in recognition and in deep gratitude for Larry’s extraordinary support and the countless hours he donated to the Society ad the thousands of visitors who stopped by over the years. Larry’s contributions are certainly an invaluable, unequaled labor of love and will benefit the Genealogical Society for generations. Tax-deductible gifts to the Scott Foundation Scholarships and the Robert Larry Crawford Scholarship can be mailed to the Jackson County Genealogical Society, Post Office Box 2108, Cullowhee, NC 28723. Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2015 21 The Shuler Family and The Civil War ED: This is the conclusion to the article written by JCGS member Jane Nichols Heymann. She has granted us permission to publish it in JTJ. Emanuel Shuler m. Jane Ingram The family lived in and around Cherokee County, NC; Bartow County, Georgia; Arkansas; and the western states. 1. Jemima Levina 2. John 3. William M. 4. Andrew 5. George Washington 6. Mary Eliza m. Wiley E. Reeves (GA) 7. Margaret “Peggy” 8. James Fayette 9. Goldman 10. Richard H. 1. Jemima Levina never married. 2. John Shuler lived in Georgia and was born in 1820, so it is likely he served in the War. Having no middle initial to help with the search, it is difficult to find. I did locate a John B. Shuler serving the Confederacy in the 6th Arkansas Infantry, Regiment 6, Co G. I do not know for sure this applies to Emanuel’s son. However, it is the same regiment and company that John Henry served in (John H. is the son of Jacob Shuler). 3. William M. Shular enlisted at age 31 in Co. F 29th NC on August 31, 1861. He was hospitalized at Meridian, Mississippi April 11, 1865, with a wound. The place and date wounded was not recorded. He surrendered at Citronelle, Alabama, My 4, 1865, and was paroled at Meridian on May 9, 1865. According to The History of the Shuler Family, William had married Dorcas Ann Winters Smith in 1885. His wife claimed his pension in 1903, the year William died, according to The History of the Shuler Family. Another interesting fact is that the Census for 1860 places him in Yuba County, California with his brothers G. W. and Goldman. All three brothers had gone west to look for gold. He must have come home to NC to serve in the NC 29th. 4. Andrew died in the 1850’s. 5. There is a record of George Washington Shuler’s being on the census in California, and The History of the Shuler Family says several of Emanuel Shuler’s sons went to mine gold there in the 1860’s. But there is also a record of his having served in Thomas’ Legion in NC Troops. Troops notes that there are no identifying papers found so far that place him in that particular unit. I think, based on the correspondence of James Fayette, it is possible both William M. and George W. came back to NC to fight for the Confederacy after having been in California. There is also another possibility that may be farfetched, but, in checking the records of Confederate soldiers in Arkansas, there is a “George W. Shooler” listed as serving in Arkansas’ Thrall’s Battery, Light Artillery and Wiggins’ Battery, Light Artillery. That would put him in an Arkansas regiment like his brother, John. There is also a record of George W. Shooler as a Prisoner of War. The records show he surrendered at Citronella, Alabama, and was paroled at Meridian, Mississippi. More research on him needs to be done, but we know from The History of the Shuler Family that he eventually settled in Arkansas after the War. 6. William E. Reeves, the husband of Mary Eliza Shuler at age 46 in 1864 served in 1st Fannin’s Reserves, Georgia. 7. Margaret “Peggy” Shuler was mentally handicapped. Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2015 22 8. When James Fayette Shuler was 24 he was arrested and convicted of robbing stage coaches in California as part of a gang, the Gassaway Gang. They claimed they were robbing in order to get money to support the Confederate cause. James was in San Quentin from 1864-1872. Sandra Shuler Bray has put his photos and those of his family on Ancestry.com. The narrative accompanying it says that after he was released, he married the widow of a Mormon pioneer and lived the rest of his life quietly in Utah as a Mormon and a miner. Bray notes that James’ granddaughter married a man who later became the Governor of Utah. The family only discovered his past when checking old Census records and say he never mentioned his arrest and imprisonment to his children and was a model husband and father. The narrative says, “During the spring and summer of 1864, the Civil War was turning especially bad for the Confederacy. General Sherman began his invasion of Georgia in May, and burned his way through the northwestern part of the state until he captured Atlanta on September 2. During the campaign, the armies came right through the are where James Shuler’s parents had their farm in Bartlow County. The newspapers in California were full of the news of the war and were exulting because of the Union victories. Southern sympathizers were secretly recruited to do all that they could to help the Confederate cause. The leader of the gang, Ulysses S. Gassaway, age 61, was from Kentucky. In a letter asking for a pardon from the Governor of California, James says that his two older brothers had already returned home by 1863, leaving him alone in California. He says his parent’s home in Georgia had been destroyed along with their possession by Sherman’s army. The documentation, letters, and information contributed by Bray is excellent. More study of the Confederate “secret societies” working in western states may shed light on James Fayette’s motive for breaking the law. It is also possible that as a young man, he simply fell in with the wrong crowd. The letter asking for a pardon is an eloquent statement, emphasizing that he is a man of good character who had never before been arrested and whose family is “broken-hearted.” 9. Goldman Shuler has no Civil War records that I can find. He may have stayed out west during the War. The History of the Shuler Family notes he was in the 1860 Census of California, and that he lived in Canada much of his life. 10. Richard H. Shuler, born in 1850, was probably too young for the War. I can find no records on him, Confederate nor Union. He lived in Oregon according to The History of the Shuler Family, following in the footsteps, it seems, of the other brothers who had moved west. Note: I spent time going through Georgia’s Civil War Service Records of Confederate Soldiers 1861-1865, available on-line through Family Search (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints,) and I found 15 Shulers who fought in Georgia. Unfortunately for research, they are listed by initials, and so far I can’t match them directly to our family. Additional Information Thomas’s Legion There is an excellent book on Thomas’s Legion, Storm in the Mountains by Vernon Crow, and a detailed volume of information in NC Troops. Online sources abound on William H. Thomas such as thomaslegion.net, so a few paragraphs I might write could not do justice to what is considered one of the most historically interesting units of the Civil War, and certainly one of the most important men in western NC. John Shuler and his wife, Sally had a genealogical connection with Will Thomas because Will was their first cousin. Also, the Shulers and Thomas had had business dealings for a long time before the War. Many of our Shuler men were part of the Legion’s story. The Legion is the only one that was made up of several companies of probably the best NC and Tennessee mountain men, and two companies of Cherokee Indians. In total, the men Thomas recruited into Thomas’s Legion were a diverse group. They were rugged mountaineers, trappers, hunters, scouts, sharpshooters, and fiercely independent Scotch-Irish descendants. Cherokees were unwavering in their loyalty to Thomas with good reason because Thomas had worked on their behalf for years and was considered their only “white chief.” The Cherokee who joined his Legion had already proven themselves to be survivors with The Trail of Tears, and there were no better trackers than they were in the whole mountains. “The Legionnaires (carried) an assortment of not only old squirrel rifles, Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2015 23 revolvers, and sabers, but also steel-tipped spears, long-bladed bowie knives, and tomahawks that (could) be hurled with accuracy up to 30 feet and open up a man’s chest or skull. They (were) largely self-equipped and self-supplied.” (Gerard, p.68, Our State, Sept. 2012.) Thomas’s Legion was NC’s sole “legion”, and recruited mainly from western NC. In military language a “Legion” is a simple command containing all three components; infantry, cavalry and artillery. It mustered in 2,500 soldiers while the average Civil War regiment mustered about 1,100 soldiers. The Indian estimate varies from 200-400 men. Western NC in 1860 consisted of 18 counties, and slaves comprised on 11.3% of the region’s total population compared to 33 % for the whole state. Histories of Several Regiments and Battalions from NC in the Great War 1861-65, Vol. 3 says the mountaineers were generally poor and had no interest in slavery, “present or prospective.” But when Federal troops occupied East Tennessee and threatened their homes and way of life, they joined the fighting. One history book quotes a soldier who said the closer the Federal troops got to his house, the more “Southern” he felt. When the Civil War broke out, William H. Thomas was 57 years old and a slave owner. (Allen, Annals of Haywood County). He was authorized by Jefferson Davis to raise a regiment, which was mustered into service in Knoxville, Tennessee, in the summer of 1862. Their first skirmish was in September 1862 at Baptist Gap, Tennessee. During the battle the grandson of Chief Junaluska was killed and the Cherokee soldiers retaliated by scalping several Union wounded and dead soldiers. The act of scalping sort of “set the tone” of the Legion as far as the Northerners were concerned. Whether true or an embellishment of history, there is no doubt Northern troops treated the Legion with respect because of the Cherokee regiments and at least the potential for such an act. There is a long history of changing leaders within the regiments. Part of the companies were eventually deployed to fight in Virginia, but part stayed to protect Western NC from Federal raiders. It was disbanded May 10, 1865, but is credited with firing North Carolina’s last Confederate shots of the Civil War near Waynesville, May 1865. About 400 whites and 200 Cherokees were left from the original Legion, and about 1000 men from other areas joined them at the Battle House on Main Street, Waynesville, to surrender. The Confederates were treated very favorably at the surrender because Thomas had the Indians to create numerous campfires throughout the mountains, giving the impression there were hundreds more Confederate troops hiding, and he had the Cherokees appear bare-chested and in war paint, ready for more war. I expect the stories of past scalpings were at least somewhere in a few of the minds of the Yankee troops. History books note it was one of the few times a peace was “negotiated” with the North. The Legion was the last Confederate unit in NC to lay down arms. The Confederate men were allowed to kep their weapons as they returned home, and the Northern troops left the area quickly. The Cherokee Some history books say that essentially every able-bodied Cherokee left at Qualla had joined Thomas’s Legion. That meant that only women, children and the elderly were left to hunt and farm, which was disastrous for the remaining tribe. During the last years of the war, those Cherokee left at home were reduced to eating bark and leaves. Even the $9000 spent by Will Thomas himself to buy cornmeal, flour and bacon for them from South Carolina was not enough. Many starved. According to a book NC’s Eastern Band of Cherokees (Neeley, p.162) about 30 Cherokee had joined the Union, and oral history states that these men who were disloyal to Thomas were later murdered by relatives. It is thought that a few captured Cherokee who had been kept in Federal prisons came home with smallpox, though some history books say that immediately after the surrender, smallpox was carried home by a U. S. Army deserter. In any event, a smallpox epidemic in 1865 killed 125 of the Cherokee. Without a doubt, history records show that the War exacted a great price on the tribe left in NC. Partly because of their effort in the War, the state recognized the right of the Cherokee to remain on their lands but did not grant them citizenship (Gerald, Our State, Sept, 2012, p. 70). The real irony of the story and a real testament of the Indian’s loyalty to Thomas was the fact the Cherokee fought side by side with the white men who had taken their land and had exiled them to Oklahoma. Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2015 24 Letter written by James Shuler San Quentin Nov 20th 1870 To His Excellency H. H. Haight Governor of California The undersigned would most respectfully call your attention to the following. I was born in North Carolina in 1840, and in 1850 my Father emigrated to Georgia, in 1859 I with two older brothers came to California. They returning home in 1863, I was left alone in this country. On the 26th of June 1864 I was arrested on the charge I am now suffering for, and sentenced to Ten years of which I have already served 6 years and 5 months. The evidence in my case and that of a man named James Stores (a Black Republican of the deepest dye) who was arrested with me are precisely the same, he had money and friends who procured him bail which he forfeited and ran away, was re-arrested got a change of venue, was tried & acquitted, and I could have done the same, but a sense of the disgrace I had got into prevented my apprising my friends of my situation, and I preferred to suffer everything rather that they should know it; this, and the fact of my Southern proclivities becoming known was sufficient to condemn me in the mind of the Court who were all as Black as could be, and seemed to take it for granted that I must be a bad man to sympathize with the South & be a rebel as I was frequently styled by them, this and not the evidence sent me here. At length the fact of my being here reached Georgia, and the feelings of my heart-broken Parents may be better imagined than described, they fondly hoped that in the Golden State their son was doing well and would some day return a rich man to gladden their hearts and help them out of the fiery ordeal through which Georgia had passed, their property of every kind was laid waste & destroyed and they left homeless, and if I could get either a commutation or conditional pardon to leave the State & never return I might yet prove a comfort to them in their declining years. I have brothers who would send money to pay my passage home the day I leave here, & believe me I have no wish to remain in a State where I have been so deeply disgraced & for a crime of which I am not guilty. I can furnish testimonials of good character from Yuba & Siskiyou up to ten months prior to my arrest, and I can if you wish prove to your entire satisfaction that my Family are all respectable people, and that I was never imprisoned before in my life, and lastly my Brothers and Sisters are all married and living away from the old folks, is the reason I am doubly anxious to go to them, hoping your Excellency may be pleased to look with favor on this, and permit me to furnish the proofs of all herein stated. I remain with respect Your humble servant James F. Shuler P.S. I would also beg to call your attention to the Petition and Recommendations on file from here, and papers from Georgia relative to me and my case, also to the exertions of the Honorable A. J. Batchelder at various times in my behalf. J. F. Shuler Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2015 25 1880 Jackson County Census Records ED: We continue in this issue the Webster Township. It will continue in further issues. His brother Obediah was born in Virginia, according to the biography of Wilson N. Blanton, gson of Obediah. Since it’s not likely the father of the brothers moved back and forth between NC and VA, it’s very likely that Jeremiah was born in VA. The children of Jeremiah and Sarah Womack are well documented, thanks to the Blanton Family Bible belonging to Mrs. Lucille Webb Kennedy of Ellenboro, NC. The Bible shows Jeremiah and Sarah’s birth dates and full names and birth dates of Royley (Riley), Temperance, Josiah, Jesse, Ransom, William Jackson, Stephen Fletcher, Elijah, and Sarah Blanton. Mrs. Kennedy very graciously sent wrm (William R. Morrow), good copies of the family record pages on 11 Dec 1986. Also, these same children are listed in the “little book” 1900 vest pocket calendar by Alfred B. Blanton under “great uncle Jeremiah Blanton,” which also listed his brothers Obediah, Claiborne and William, and their children. In 2002, the Bible was donated to te Oak Grove Church in Ellenboro, NC. There are within the family book “Blanton Cousins” printed 2002 by Bill Morrow, pictures of Jeremiah’s and his wife Sarah’s tombstones, taken by Nadine Blanton and sent to wrm by her niece Betty Blanton Crabtree. Also, a picture of the Oak Grove Church of Ellenboro, NC, the original church of which was built by Jeremiah Blanton in 1793, and finally a picture of Nadine Blanton, herself, which I requested in order to use for the dedication page. Our thanks to Betty for sharing these momentos, plus an updating of her’s and Nadine’s family history information. Also, we have included a copy of Jeremiah’s on signature, in 1852 when he signed a deed of land from his son, Stephen F. Blanton to Martin Beam in Rutherford County, NC A copy of the deed was sent to wrm in Feb 2002 from Jim Burns of Tulsa, OK, a descendant of Jeremiah thru son Ransom. Our thanks to Jim for sharing the deed and more importantly, the signature of our Jeremiah Blanton. Seeing his signature, reading about the various land transaction, seeing pictures of his church and tombstone, all together allow us a glimpse into the life and times of Jeremiah Blanton. Notes for Sarah Womack Sarah Womack was born 10 Aug 1782 in NC. Her father was William Womack, born 11 Nov 1753 in Prince Edward Co., VA. Sarah’s mother was Lucienda Womack, born c1767 in Halifax Co., VA. William and Lucienda were half-first cousins Their fathers shared the same father, Abraham Womack, Sr., but had different mothers. Thus their fathers were half-brothers. Hence, half-cousins. William’s parents were Abraham Womack, Jr. and Elizabeth Stubblefield. Elizabeth was the daughter of Robert Stubblefield (died after 1758) and Ann Parker. Abraham Womack, Jr’s father was Abraham Womack, Sr. and his mother’s name is unknown at this time. Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2015 32 Lucienda’s parents were Thomas Womack and Louvisa Rice, daughter of John Rice, died after 1758 in Lunenburg Co. VA. Thomas Womack’s father was also Abraham Womack, Sr. born 1712 in Henrico Co., VA. Abraham, Sr. fathered Thomas and Archee Blanton, from his mistress, Ann ____ Blanton. DNA testing in 2002 confirmed that descendants of Thomas Womack matched samples from descendants of Archee Blanton, proving they were full brothers. We don’t know why they took different last names. Abraham Womack Sr’s parents were Thomas Womack Sr. born c1680 in Henrico Co. VA, and Mary Farley. Her parents were John Farley and Elizabeth Akin. Thomas Womack’s parents were Abraham Womack, born 1642 and Sarah Worsham. Abraham Womack’s parents were William Womack born about 1610 in England, and Mary Jane Allen. William Womack migrated to Virginia and died 1680 in Henrico Co., VA. Sources of Information: 1. Francis Marion Blanton, 1905 memoirs, printed in Womack Genealogy Vol IV No. 1, June 1960. Whole No. 7; page 108 states: “Sallie married Jeremiah Blanton.” That Sallie’s parents were William Womack and Lucy Womack,(cousins) and Lucy’s mother was a Rice (pg. 110). 2. William Blanton was born in 1779 in NC, and died after 1870 in NC. He married Sarah Ketcherside. She was born in 1804 and died after 1870. Notes for William Blanton: Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2015 33 William was probably born in NC. This is based upon various census reports in which William stated that he was born in NC. William was named a brother of Obediah, Jeremiah and Claiborne Blanton. William moved to Rutherford Co., NC with his brothers before 1793 This is based upon his brother Jeremiah founding the first Methodist Church in Rutherford Co., NC, c 1793. On 16 May 1805, Clayborn (sic) Blanton sold land to William Blanton, and the deed was witnessed by Jeremiah and Obediah Blanton. This alone indicated close kinship. Deed Bk 22-23, p 308, Rutherford Co., NC. 12 Jan 1826 William Blanton filed a land grant on Little Grog Creek in Rutherford Co., NC. His named appeared in the 1810-1870 Census for Rutherford Co., NC. The 1830 Census pg. 484, William is living near his son Claborn and his brother Jeremiah. William is shown age 40-50 and his wife 40-50. Making them born between 1780-1790. Journeys Through Jackson Winter 2015 34 ------------------------------------------ Generation 3 ---------------------------------------------- 6. William Madison Blanton was born on 1 Dec 1799 in NC and died 13 Jan 1882 in Mooreboro, Cleveland Co., NC. He married (1) Sarah Melton, She was born 13 Jul 1809 in NC and died 14 Feb 1868. He married (2) Priscilla Ellis on 16 Nov 1834 in NC. She was born 1799 in NC and died after 1850. Notes for William Madison Blanton: From an article from the Rutherford County Genealogical Society written by Alfred Jack Blanton (date not shown): “William was a member of the North Carolina Legislature.” Of William’s four sons, all went west to Arkansas except for Alfred Burton Blanton. Info from Carolyn Lorenz 1 Jun 2002. William Madison Blanton and Sarah Melton had the following children: i. Alfred Burton Blanton was born 20 Sep 1820 in NC and died 12 May 1902 in Cleveland Co., NC. He married (1) Myrtle Green Melton on 19 May 1840 in Rutherford Co., NC. She was born 27 Nov 1820 in NC and died 19 Aug 1887 in Cleveland Co., NC. He married (2) Nancy M. Cudd on 1 Sep 1887 in Spartanburg Co., SC. Notes for Alfred Burton Blanton: Alfred was the grandson of Clairborne Blanton. Alfred was the person who c1900 posted names of brothers Clairborne, Jeremiah, Obediah, and William Blanton and most of their children in the “little book”, a 1900 vest pocket calendar which Blanton researchers use as proof the four men were brothers. Wrm was told by Jean Tanner in 1986 it belonged to ex-Governor Blanton of Tennessee. Alfred B. Blanton lineage info came from Upper South Carolina Genealogy & History, Nov 2000, Vol XIV, No. 4: “The Family Bible of Alfred Burton Blanton” is the source of names, births and deaths of this line. Copy from Mrs. Virginia Fowler, was posted on Blanton Forum, 6 Apr 2001, posting #1625 by Carole Pearson. Notes from A. B. Blanton’s Bible names Claiborne as his grandfather and lists his children. Of Claiborne’s six sons, all went to Texas escept William. Following is a short summary apparently rendered by Alfred’s grandson Joseph Beam: “Clayborn, Jeremiah, Obadiah and William Blanton were brothers. Father’s name not given. Clayborn Blanton’s sons were Josiah, William (grandpap), Lewis, John, Jefferson and Burrell. Al these went west (Texas) except William who was born about 1799. William (Grandpap) Blanton’s sons were Alfred B., John, Gilford and James. All these went west (Arkansas) (except Grandpap.) Grandpa Alfred was born in 1820. Jeremiah’s sons were Riley, Josiah, Jessey, Ransom, Jackson and Elijah. They lived near Oak Grove Church, the church that was once called Blanton Church. Obadiah’s sons were William, John and Gassaway. Where they lived is not stated. William’s sons James William, Jessy, Jefferson and Jackson. Nothing is stated as to where this family lived.” “Dear Festus: The above was taken from the little book and a few dates from Bibles. I think sometimes when I am at Rutherford I will try and see if I can’t find some more information about Blanton family. As ever, Joseph” Printed below the signature is the name Joseph Beam. No date was on the letter. The envelope which was copied above each of the papers wrm received, as postmarked 21 Feb 1940, Ellenboro, NC. It is important that Joseph Beam wrote the summary, because the “little book” pages by themselves are not clear about the four Blanton men being brothers. Joseph’s letter clarifies the issue. Farmer and mine owner, was born in Sevier Co., TN on June 4, 1840, son of Gazzaway and Mary Baker Blanton, both of whom were natives of Burke Co., NC. Obediah Blanton, the grandfather of Wilson N. Blanton, was born in VA and removed from that state to NC in his early childhood. This ancestor of Mr Blanton was a soldier in the War of 1812 ad fought under General Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans. He was a planter and a slave owner in NC, and lived to be 80 years of age. The great grandfather of Wilson N. Blanton was William Blanton and he was a Virginia planter who was a member of Washington’s bodyguard during the War of the Revolution. Gassaway Blanton removed with his wife and 3 children from NC to Sevier Co., TN and their 12 children grew to maturity in that state.
