President's Message Hello! We have had some of the most unusual weather this year. It seems as though we have gone from winter to summer overnight We have skipped spring this year. It really hurts when there is snow on Monday and 70 degrees on Friday. I guess we don't have much authority over nature. With the arrival of the summer months comes a time for various activities. The long days of summer will allow for extended activities and even more hectic schedules. However, we will somehow find time to do that genealogical research that holds a dear place in each of our hearts. Things seem to be moving along at a very steady pace. Rick Frizzell and Barbara Dooley have put together some very interesting programs for our society. Be sure to watch your calendar and don't miss the meeting. Attendance is important. There is some question on the location of future meetings. Watch the Sylva Herald for information on locations. Also be reminded that the Holden Award deadline is not too far off. Continue to send in those applications. We have several members in our society who are ill and unable to attend our meetings. Take time to remember them and pray for a speedy recovery. A little love and encouragement can go a long way when someone is under the weather. I would like to express a warm welcome to all of our new members. We have had several people join our society this year. It is always encouraging to check the mail and see a new membership application. I would like to thank all those who do so much for our society. Good luck to all in your research. Brian McMahan From the Editor One of the more interesting genealogical trips I've taken in the last year or so came about during the week before Easter when Rick Frizzell, Charlie Foti, and I visited the East Tennessee Historical Association (the McCIung'Collection) in Knoxville. None of us had been there before, so we were all duly impressed. Housed in a fine old building in downtown Knoxville, the McClung collection occupies the top floor. The reading and research room has shelf space for Tennessee county volumes, Heritage books from several states, and census indices. A small room adjoining the reading room has microfilm machines. Behind the reading room, a hallway leads to a room of open stacks where one can find an amazing number of volumes. These concentrate on various states, counties within those states, family histories, series material, and an outstanding collection of periodicals pertaining to history and genealogy. With staff assistance, one can also use vertical files. "Like most archival and research centers, the house rules here are strict. But justifiably so, since our hobby seems to bring out the worst in some people, and I understand that theft is a problem in all large library collections. Hours are ordinary business hours, but of special interest to us in this area is the fact that the library is open on Saturday. Allow a couple of hours of driving time from Jackson County, and go to visit this fine collection, especially if you have roots or branches in Tennessee. ^J ^J ^J ^ Journeys Through Jackaon, May-JUne*, 1996 Tab'le of Conterita Queries and Information 55 Franklin Pierce was no. We certainly did not miss it I credit its absence with helping us to grow up with a sense of history and assuredly with a sense of family. What did we do in those long hours without Ed Sullivan or The Hit Parade or The Real McCoys or Robert Montgomery Presents? These seemed to be shows of high quality, and we enjoyed them when we were guests in other homes, but we did not need a flickering box to entertain us or to pass the time. Now this is not a story of how hard our lives were, or how hard we had to work, or of any other imagined deprivations. If we implied such stories, they wouldn't be true. Each of us had a few little chores to do, and my fingers still bear the evidence of my expertise with chopping kindling, but by and large our jobs were to study, then read, then listen to other people talk. After the homework was finished, all five Crawfords might be sitting somewhere in the house, with book, paper, or magazine in hand. I treasure the foresight of our parents, who provided us with the WORLD BOOK. I also treasure, to this day, the places in those books where I see grimy smudges from preschool fingers. Regrettably, we didn't smudge the pages found in any aspect of natural science, and none of the three of us would hold any pretensions in mathematics. But all of that history and geography! It fit exactly into our experience. I remember another old book around the house. In its pages were portraits of American presidents up through Harry Truman, who some persons would undoubtedly say was the last important one anyway. We simply committed those gentlemen to memory, just as we did the states and capitals, and all of those other wonders found in the encyclopedia. So even though only historians and his alma mater at Bowdoin consider Franklin Pierce important enough to remember, he was no mystery to us. He belonged in the fourteenth slot, only two after Zachary Taylor, whose middle name as we all know was Ashe, which as a small lad I mispronounced with predictable results, humor or chagrin, depending on the sensitivities of the listener. For entertainment, all we had to do was go upstairs. Here we found our maternal grandmother, holding forth as only she could do, with opinions about everything, and especially scathing commentary on the Republican party. This might not have been so unusual, or nearly so funny, but Grandma's oldest living sister resided there too. Both were widowed by 1949, both would live until 1960, and after those two facts, one would find little agreement between these two old ladies. They were two of Will and Depina (Ensley) Blanton's daughters, and they had lost their oldest sister Alice when Aunt Cumi was a young woman and Grandma was just a girl. Their only other sister (they had eight living brothers at the time) was Aunt Mariah Shuler (pronounced, for the uninitiated, "Muhrahr"), who holds her own place in the Addie Community's history, and who might have been the funniest woman who ever lived in Jackson County. But Grandma and Aunt Cumi, while not in Aunt Mariah's class with one-liners, could surely enliven an evening. To say that Grandma was a Democrat was understating the case. She nearly went into cardiac arrest when she learned that she had a nephew named Lincoln. (Later, she would love Lincoln Shuler just like everyone else in the area did.) But imagine the possibilities for argument when Cumi moved in...she had been married to John Gilead Hooper, of course one of the Jackson County Republican Hoopers, and Aunt Cumi's loyalties were firmly in the corner of her late husband's political persuasion. The Civil War was fought constantly. The American presidency was always a heated topic. The most interesting (and the most humorous) part to us was that the principals being argued were typically Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and of course Herbert Hoover. (In retrospect, I have to admit that those men were more interesting than Eisenhower's golf game, but at the time we considered the arguments dated, obsolete, and hilarious.) In calmer moments, my Grandma read to me, before I learned that wonderful skill. And while I owned many children's books, she considered them tomfoolery, and so she read what she was interested in, which was history and geography. She would wish aloud that she could see Mount Baker, and that she could visit her brothers in Washington state. (My parents took her and Aunt Cumi there in the summer of 1951.) There is a final small irony to this reminiscence: in the fall of 1960, Dad finally bought a television set Grandma, nearly constantly bedridden since Cumi's death in February, spied John F. Kennedy on that machine and demanded an absentee ballot, her first vote since 1932. She passed away Christmas morning. 56 v _ y CAMPGROUND CEMETERY ^ Campground Cemetery, one of northern Jackson County's oldest cemeteries, is located on U.S. 441 between Gateway and Cherokee, just north of the LDS church. A large memorial to William H. Thomas is at the cemetery entrance. Between 85 and .100 graves are marked only with fieldstohes or are otherwise unidentifiable. His father was Phillip Leonidas Dills (11/6/1850 - 4/27/1880), son of -Phillip and Mary (Polly) Buchanan Dills. His mother .was Lydia Caroline (Callie) Sutton (2/14/1859 - 9/19/1897), daughter of William and Cynthia Martin Sutton. Ossie1 s great-grandparents were Bartlett Dills, Sr., and Susannah Henson Dills and John Buchanan, Jr., and Rebecca Ramsey Buchanan. ' When Ossie Was just over two years of age-, on April 27, 1880, his father was killed. According to a story told by a family member, Leonidas was plowing on a hillside on Pounding Mill Branch on the south side of the Tuckaseigee River where the Dills farm was located. As he plowed, the plow struck a rock and bounced back causing mortal internal injuries. In addition to Ossie, there were two other boys: John Ramsey (Jay) born June 6, 1873, and Andrew J., born in 1874. On July 12, 1885, Ossie's mother, Callie, married Marcus Lafayette (Fate) Dills, who was a brother to her first husband, Leonidas, and Fate became stepfather to the three boys. Fate and Callie had three children: Allen Thurman (3/31/1886 - 11/10/1947); Annie (Tallent) (12/16/1888 - 12/14/1973); and Jesse Grady Dills (8/1/1891 - 8/29/1945). The 1880 census for the Webster township .of Jackson County has the following entry: Phillip L. Dills 29 (a line drawn through his name since he was probably already dead before the census was taken) Lidda C 27 Andrew J. 6 John R. 5 Thomas A. (Ossier) 2 Wm. Rogers 3 0 (farm labor) Marcus L. Dills 33 farmer The 1900 census for the Dillsboro township of Jackson County shows: Dills, Marcus L. 59 born Nov. 1840 Allen T. (son) 14 born Mar. 1886 Anna (dtr.) 11 born Dec. 1888 Jesse G. (son) 8 born Aug. 1891 Phillip (father) 92 born (Jan.) 1808 Thomas A. (stepson) 22 born Feb. 1878 (Ossie) Most of this family remained in Jackson County; however, Ossie followed the lumber industry into Carter County, Tennessee, where he met and married Anna Belle Lacey. They followed the lumber camps through Tennessee and on into Mississippi. Ossie was a saw filer, filing the huge saws in the sawmills, an occupation which was very important to the lumber business. Ossie and Annie Belle, who were called T. O. and Belle, made Memphis their permanent home. They had three children: Flora Mae, Juanita, and J. M. Juanita died at the age of 19 in a yellow fever epidemic. J. M., a radio-television repairman, married twice and has two sons and one daughter. J. M. (born Feb. 7, 1909) died July 27, 1969, of a heart attack while on a fishing trip in Mississippi. 61 Flora Mae (born Sept. 6, 1909) married William Archie Nail on April 6, 1927. Flora Mae died in childbirth on March 4, 1929. Flora Mae Dills Nail, born March 4, 1929, in the granddaughter of Ossie Dills. She married Harold Hogue, and they live in Germantown, TN. Ossie also has three other grandchildren, the offspring of his son, J. M.: James M. Dills lives in Dallas, TX; Olive Ann Dills, who married Lewis Dunn, lives in Millington, TN; and Thomas Dills lives in Memphis. T. O. was working at a lumber mill in Wilson, Arkansas, when he died on November 18, 1934. Although her grandfather died when she was just five years old, "Flo" remembers him as a "tall, very handsome man who had a way with children. They all loved him. He was always fun to be with, and I adored him," she said. She added: "He never lost his love for the mountains. I can still remember the stories he told about the beauty of the hills and his love for North Carolina." Submitted by Dorris Dills Beck and Flora Hogue CONFEDERATE STATUE IS RESTORED At the Society's meeting May 9, George Frizzell of the Jackson County Historical Association entertained us with a scholarly presentation concerning the Confederate monument in Sylva. Some months ago the Historical Association had contracted with an Ohio firm to restore the statue, and the Confederate was removed from his stone pedestal for cleaning and repairs. On Saturday, May 11, with re-enactors and "war widows" in mourning looking on, the Association restored a clean Confederate to his rightful place overlooking downtown Sylva. ^—J Any time this subject arises, the 1915 pictures of the original unveiling are brought out for perusal. Although all.have "Cancel" handwritten ,on them, one wonders what is to be canceled. Should they be, in Swain County, are they where they belong, or did those folks decide to liye a little longer? 3) In the, Scotts -Creek certificates, both Robert .Brooks and Cinda Blanton are shown as born in Haywood County. Both were born in Rutherford. 4) Also in Scotts Creek, the informant for Coleman Bryson gave his own parents instead of the parents of the deceased. V ^ < w 5) In the Green's Creek certificates, Martha Jane Allison's mother is given as Pollia Backer, born Missouri. She was Mary (Polly) Baker, born in Iredell Co., NC. (She lived in Missouri 'for -a while.) , 6) In the one Canada certificate, note that the cemetery listed is "Glady Creek." .Last fall, Mr. Lewis Maasingale tqld me that the Maasingale Cemetery was indeed on Glady Creek. I wonder how many of these cemeteries are being missed. If you know of one that does not seem to be on master lists, we need to find out about it. 67 John H. FRIZZELL AND JOSEPH R.j BUCHANAN (The following is the fourth "chapter" in a genealogy project assembled in February 1995 by Larry Crawford. 'The grandchild numbers are relative to Jason and Margaret Gribble Frizzell.) Fourth of the children of Jason and Margaret Frizzell, Mary (Polly) was born about 1832 or 1833. On April 16, 1853, .she married- Joseph R. Buchanan, born July 12, 1827. This family lived on Cane Creek, as indicated by land -records., At least nine children were born to them, but records are sketchy and incomplete. Polly might have died before 1900; Joseph R. lived a long life, and is buried at Hamburg Cemetery after dying June 18, 1917. Their children: Martha' Octavia Buchanan (1857) .(after 1920) Margaret'V. Buchanan (1859) Theodocia Buchanan (1860) Arbeale Cansas Buchanan (1864) m. James Thomas Shular Berinnes S. Buchanan (1865) Emily A. Buchanan (1868) m. Silas McCall Samuel Buchanan (1870) Brusia Buchanan (1873) / Benjamin Franklin Buchanan (187-6) m. Fannie May Coward Grandchild #28...Martha Octavia Buchanan Martha Octavia Buchanan was born about 1857, was still living at Hamburg in her daughter's home in 1920, but would die and is buried at the state hospital. She was never married, but did bear two children by James Pruett. Her children: Myra Buchanan (1877) m. John B. Bryson Stella D. Buchanan (1879) m. John Bradley Stella is buried beside her grandfather at Hamburg. n Grandchild #29...Margaret V. Buchanan This daughter was still at home in 1880, about 21 years old. I know nothing else about her. Grandchild #30.. .Theodocia Buchanan >. The exact same story as Margaret V., except that she was at home in 1870, not in 1880, born about 1860. Grandchild #31...Arbeale Cansas Buchanan Shuler Fourth of the children of Joseph and Polly was Cansas, who was born October 5, 1864. On January 31, 1884, she married James Thomas Shuler, born July 18, 1864. They lived at the head of Cane Creek, where, they had six children. My mother remembered Cansas fondly, as she would make her way down Blanton Branch on her mule and stop to visit with the Norman family. Tom Shuler died November 5, 1941, Cansas October 15, 1946. They are buried in the Norman Cemetery at Ochre Hill. Their children apparently moved to South Carolina. Their children: Henry Cleveland Shuler (1884) Sally Shuler (1886) Frances F. or Mas Etta Shuler (1888) Julia Shuler (1892) Thomas Jefferson Shuler (1901) 71 Mollie Shuler (1904) Grandchild #32...Berinnes S. Buchanan .—. Born about 1865, I know nothing else about this daughter. j Grandchild #33...Emily A. Buchanan Emily (or Emma) Buchanan was born to Joseph and Polly on May 22, 1868. On July 1, 1888, she would marry Silas McCall, and would die October 10, 1950. She is buried beside her father at Hamburg Cemetery. Grandchild #34...Samuel Buchanan Born about 1870, this son might be the Samuel Buchanan shown in the Webster township census in 1920. Grandchild #35...Brusia Buchanan Born in May of 1873, this daughter may also have had another vaguely Roman name like Flavia. She was in her father's home in 1900, and was involved in land transactions concerning Cane Creek property in 1907. Grandchild #36...Benjamin Franklin Buchanan Youngest of the children, Ben was born July 14, 1876. He was a • teacher and merchant in both Cullowhee and Glenville before his relatively early death. On February 18, 1900, he married Fannie May Coward, born April 28, 1876. Ben died October 22, 1917, and Fannie May lived until March 24, 1949. They are buried with most of their children at Cullowhee Methodist Cemetery. Their children: Joseph David Buchanan (1900) (1961) Blanche Juanita Buchanan (1902) m. Kelly Frady '' "" Benjamin Franklin Buchanan (1904) m. Vivien Curll V_V Edna Mae Buchanan (1906) m. Hugh Thomas Cotter William Boyd Buchanan (1907) m. Pearl Deitz Annie Glen Buchanan (1908) Geneva Lou Buchanan (1911) (1985) Problems in the Polly Frizzell Buchanan family: 1) The obvious. What happened to all of those children? 2) When did Polly die and where is she buried? 3) Are any of the Shuler children still living? 4) The public insensitivity to mental illness or deficiency can create problems for genealogists. Why? Silence. Any insight on this family would be most welcome. v _ y 72 < w o o SUTTON CEMETERY ELA COMMUNITY SWAIN COUNTY Andrew Jackson Sutton 29 Dec 1869 3 May 1932 Ella T.
