President's Message I hope that everyone had a wonderful holida; season. I would like to take this opportunity td~^ thank everyone for all of the encouragement and support they gave me during my term as Vice President I would like to congratulate all of our officers and simply say that I look forward to working with them in this new year. This year looks to be a very important one for the Society. During this year we hope to be able to find a permanent residence, acquire some equipment to work with, and last but not least, be able to find that missing link in our family trees. I would like to pledge to you that I will try my hardest to fully execute the powers of the presidency in a way that is pleasing and rewarding for the Society. I would encourage suggestions and comments to our Board of Directors so that we can continually be able to modify and adapt to best fit the needs of the Society and its members. Keep in mind the Holden Award that our Society will have the honor of giving out in August Work with the Society is being done at this moment to help finalize the processes and procedures. 1994 came and went faster than most of us wanted it to, and with the looks of things, 1995 isn't going to be any slower—possibly faster. It is reprinted here by permission Of the Asheville Citizen-Times Publishing Company.) Brothers Recall Winter Battle 50 Years Ago A couple 'of brothers who, like the rest of us, are beginning to get a little long in the tooth, sit by the fire these winter days and thank the Good Lord for the warmth, recalling exactly 50 years ago when they were certain that they might freeze to death before the winter was over. Bill and Carl Crawford, who grew up in Balsam in Jackson County, spent the winter of 1944-45 helping fight the Germans in the Battle of the Bulge, one of the most fierce and difficult campaigns in the history of warfare. Carl, of the 30th Infantry, landed on Omaha Beach on June 12,1944, six days after D-Day. "We thought everything would be aU right by then," he said, "but our lieutenant was shot by a sniper a minute after he stepped off the landing ship." Bill, who fought five campaigns with the 6th Army, came into Normandy more than a month after the invasion, landing at Utah Beach, finding his unit attached to Gen. George Patton's 3rd Army. The way he explains it, "I had the misfortune of serving under Patton. He was a regular Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He could be either an ordinary guy or a raving maniac, and you never knew which. But he knew how to fight His theory was to mass his ' armor, keep probing, and don't stop." Bill was assigned to armor—tanks—and ours had a rough time of it "Our tanks weren't a match for the German tanks," Bill said. '"Ours were in the 30- to 34-ton range, and we were going up against the 90-ton Tiger tanks. About the only way we could destroy theirs was with flamethrower tanks or by calling in the Air Force when the weather permitted." Bill's division commander, Maj. Gen. Robert Grow', received a wire from Patton soon after they landed which simply stated, "Time is factor. Take Brest" Brest was on a peninsula defended by 80,000 crack German troops. Forty thousand of them were concentrated in the city itself. Facing these massed • numbers were 10,000 American doughboys. As they approached the city, a German infantry division of 17,000 men hit them from the rear, inflicting serious casualties. But the Americans rallied 6,000 troops and wiped out the German division. "The Bulge was a slugfest which we won an inch at a time," Bill said. "It wasn't unusual to go two nights without sleep, we were on the go so fast with Patton's army. Once I went four days without sleep. Push! Push! Push! No rest" The countryside, under heavy snow and freezing conditions for men who had to live outdoors, was littered with knocked-out combat equipment "In one space of two miles," Bill said, "I counted 175 American tanks and 35 small German tanks destroyed. "We had no proper winter clothes," he said. "Everybody was frostbitten. Hands, feet had to be amputated from a lot of guys. Tank hatches and gun turrets froze overnight and we had to burn them open with torches." Even in the midst of slaughter, humor pops up at times. Bill saw a trooper digging a foxhole one day. The trooper had taken off his steel helmet Patton himself walked up and watched a minute, and said, "Put on your helmet, soldier." The trooper, thinking it was his sergeant speaking, said without stopping, "Go to hell, you old s.o.b." Patton laughed all the way back to headquarters. Carl Crawford, the infantryman, had it just as tough. His. infantry division approached Mortaine and suddenly met a fierce counterattack face to face. The outnumbered U.S. forces knuckled down and fought the German troops to a standstill, then whipped them. Gen. Omar Bradley named that American unit the "Rock of Mortaine," but the Germans tagged that division "Roosevelt's SS." Fighting was mostly hedgerow to hedgerow through the French countryside, and all the hedgerows were booby-trapped. "We had to be careful where we dug in," Carl said. His unit was in the middle of the most fierce fighting along the way and suffered 141 percent casualties. He was hit in the shoulder by shrapnel at the Seigfried Line but didn't even check in for medical treatment "I looked at all the poor boys blowed all to pieces around me," he said, "and I didn't feel like I was hurt bad enough, to go in." Snow froze into ice and sometimes foxholes had two feet of ice. But even in such conditions, as Bill's unit did, Carl's also found a bit of humor now and then. "We had a fellow called Sergeant York," he said, "who said he was gonna kill all the Germans barehanded. He and I shared a foxhole. One day we dug in near some knocked-out tanks. We dragged over a piece of armor and laid it on our foxhole. Then we put crossties on it We thought we'd be a little warmer that way, and maybe safer ) But during the night we took a direct hit WHANG! It deafened me for days, and Sergeant York took off running, scared out of his mind and having a fit" In late January of 1945, some of the units were allowed to choose a few men to be sent home on furlough. "They put names into a hat of five of us who had been in combat the longest, including me," Carl said, "and drew one out They drew mine!" He shipped out in late January and spent 30 days at home. "Fifty days after my furlough ended, "he said, "the war was over and I didn't have to go back." During combat, the Crawford brothers later discovered they had been in the same place at the same time twice and didn't know it Both came through the roughest times of their lives in good shape. (Editor's note: Carl Robert Crawford and Billy A. Crawford are sons of John Robert and Bertha Smathers Crawford. They are first cousins to m) i father, Glenn Crawford, and I can remember, as a child of maybe four years old, seeing one of them walking up the road in his uniform. Daddy later told me that it was Billy home on furlough. As I think back, this may have been his furlough before shipping out for Europe. The recent television specials on the Battle of the Bulge were interesting, but while watching them I had not realized that close relatives were there. It must have been a terrible winter. We salute these quiet men who were heroes in their own right and are proud to feature them in our Veterans' Honor Roll.) v J FAMILY CEMETERY PROJECT Jackson County has literally hundreds of cemeteries and, while many are associated with particular churches or communities, most are resting places for small family groups. Until the 1940s, transportation was a huge obstacle for Jackson County people, and most country families could not afford the luxury of professional mortuary services. Combine these facts with a strong sense of family loyalty and adherence to tradition, and families cemeteries were a logical outcome. In some cases, the cemeteries are abandoned or nearly so; in others, the plots are well maintained and are still in use, though infrequently. We encourage members to submit censuses of any of these small cemeteries that you know about. Henson Bible is a valuable document, not only because some of our society members are directly tied to this family, but also because of the loose papers that have survived within its pages. The record has been copied verbatim. Grateful appreciation is extended to Mrs. Carey Henson (Mrs. Pearl Middleton Henson), who allowed us access to this and other materials. It is being placed with the queries because she is seeking information as well as giving it WiHian H. "Uade Billie" Robinson, born 22 March 1823, died 21 May, 1896, family cemetery. The purpose of this article is to find some of the descendants of "Uncle Billie" Robinson so they can help restore the family cemetery. I am on the Transylvania County Cemetery Committee for the .preservation of abandoned cemeteries. We are appointed by the county commissioners to the Board, but there are no funds appropriated for this purpose. The big four-sided stones have been knocked off the foundation by cattle and horses. The cemetery is in a pasture, but the stones aren't damaged. We are senior citizens and are unable to lift the stones to set them back up, but we do clean the cemeteries and document them so they can't be destroyed. I have put together a small history on this family. Was. EL Robinson and wife Nancy had the following children: Sastha, born ca 1852 married Kitchen. They went to Texas after 1900 and lived and died there; Sana, born ca 1855 married **• P-' of Asheville NC; Judith, born ca 1857 married DavW A. Davis of Jackson Co. NC; Carr, born ca 1859; Ella, born ca 1861 married Javan Davis of Jackson Ca; Mary, born ca 1863 married EL EL Sims of Dillsboro, Jackson Co.; Martha, born ca 1865 married Joseph Hoase of Jackson Co.; Flemming, born ca. 1868; Robert, born ca. 1870; Pleasant, born ca 1872; Otis, born 25 May 1874, died 12 April 1888, buried.in family cemetery; Venora, born ca 1877, no more information on her. I don't know who the males of this union married. I found no marriage for them in Transylvania Co. They lived close to the Jackson Co. line so they may have married in Jackson Co. In that period of time you had to marry a woman in her own county. I believe Aberaham Robinson, bora 1790 and buried in the family cemetery, to be the father of "Uncle Billie." This cemetery is located in Balsam Grove NC, Gloucester township, on Johnies Creek. "Uncle Billie" bought 2400 acres of land when he came to present-day Transylvania Co. between 1840 and 1850. "Uncle Billie" did a lot toward the education of the children of this isolated community. He built them a school house with his own hands and paid the teachers out of his own pocket The school was named Robinson School House. Queries are welcomed! Address them to Editor, P. O. Box 2108, Cullowhee NC 28723. This compilation of material is taken from microfilm in Hunter Library at Western Carolina University.) ^J January 2. 1896: Mr. James I. Norman informs us that the neighbors and friends of Mr. Blanton are making efforts to repair the loss sustained by the burning of his house. Assistance is being rendered him in rebuilding and refurbishing his dwelling. He is a worthy and industrious man and we hope his misfortune may speedily be repaired. Also a Letter to the Editor: It has seldom, if ever, fallen to my lot to communicate a sadder occurrence than happened to our neighbor W. R. Blanton. His house and almost all of its contents was consumed by fire this morning at 5 o'clock. It was with great difficulty that the children were gotten out of the burning building. The house contained all of the bedding, wearing apparel, and kitchen furniture together with a year's supply of provisions consisting of meat, molasses, dried fruit, sour krout, pickled beans, dried beans, wheat, and many other articles too numerous to mention sufficient to supply a very large family a year, all of which was destroyed in the space of one hour. The cause of the fire is unknown. We would request the generosity of the whole community and would advise that subscriptions be started at once for the relief of the family as they are in a very helpless condition and are worthy citizens. Yours very truly, James P. Cook, P.M., Scotts Creek NC December 29, 1895. (Editor's note: This article was particularly meaningful to me. W. R. Blanton [William Riley] was my greatgrandfather; my grandmother, Hester Norman, remembered that she was a child about eight years old when the house burned.) February 27: Mr. D. C. Cunningham brought the remains of his wife, who before her marriage was Miss Maggie Forster, here from Asheville Monday for burial.
