  • October 28,1998 inian When Kurt Comes Marching Home Again by Alex Esmon Staff Writer Kurt Russell as a buff super-killing machine? This is what you get with the new Warner Brothers release, "Soldier." For fans of science fiction, this movie has some interesting themes. For fans of slow motion blood spattered camera shots, you as well will be very satisfied with this offering. "Soldier" was directed by Paul Anderson, the man who brought us the blood bath that was "Event Horizon." Trust me, you can see the similarities between the two films. "Soldier" follows the life of a named Todd (played by Kurt Russell) all the way from cradle to the battle field. As a baby, Todd is selected to be a part of the AdamPro- ject whose goal it is to create the perfect soldier, trained from birth and devoid of normal human feeling that would be associated with attachment to a family. There is no love, compassion, joy, sorrow, or pleasure. There is only the order to kill. Not following this order is failure. Failure bad; killing good! Todd is the best there is. He fights in all the most important battles both on and off the planet. His group of men are the best soldiers. Enter the new and improved models.... In an effort to rid the soldier of such factors as fatigue, human error, or slow response time, the powers that be have come out with a new brand of soldier: A genetically superior model which has been pieced together using genes which will allow for all the best attributes in a soldier. They can run 15 miles without getting winded and they can shoot rapid fire with a 99% accuracy rate. (This is much more efficient than the old ones who could only shoot at a 98% accuracy rate..) Anyway, the new soldiers are better, so the old ones either get dumped or shipped off as refuse to a garbage dump on a far away planet called Arcadia 234 TWO TRANSPORTATION AIDES needed in Sylva (Jackson County) to transport Willie M students on an as needed basis. May include monitoring students in overnight therapeutic outings. ZMust have valid NC Driver's License and telephone in order to be easily contacted. Requirements: High School or GED equivalent. Pay rate $7.96 per hour. Post offer/pre-employment drug test and background checks will be conducted. Applicants please send a NC state application no later than November 10, 1998, to attention Betty Brown at: SMOKY MOUNTAIN CENTER FOR MENTAL HEALTH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE SERVICES PO BOX 280 DILLSBORO, NC 28725 which bears an uncanny resemblance to my local recycling center. It's even got old cars and parking meters just like mine, with the occasional lawn mower thrown in for flavor. Todd ends up on Arcadia. Eventually he makes his way to a ramshackle settlement of humans living from the waste of the other planets (mainly earth). The real fun starts when Todd tries to blend with the locals! Needless to say, he stands out rather strikingly. "Soldier" quite obviously attempts to reconcile such topics as genetic perfection vs. the human factor. The point is rather blatantly made that perhaps it's better to have the randomness of imperfection on your side as opposed to the certainties of the perfect genetic model. A normal, reactive ^^^^^^^^ human has one thing which a perfect being wouldn't: The instinct for revenge. Todd is a normal human birth, unaltered genetically. His alteration was at the emotional and psychological level, having been raised in the absence of intense emotional sensation. Todd knew that if you lagged behind the rest of the team, you were shot. If you got into a fight, you didn't stop hit ting until the opponent was incapable of any further movement. The scars which Todd carries on his face are nothing compared to the deep running pains caused by the lack of any warmth of human companionship which have left him completely hollow. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not condoning this learning environment. As a matter of fact, I pity Todd because he never felt love. He only felt fear. Another rather obvious theme is that we shouldn't waste so much perfectly good stuff! This is one of those Sci-fi flicks which acts as a sign post for what's up ahead if we're not careful. Kurt Russell is rather stiff as the grizzled old soldier Todd, but that's exactly what the part calls for. This is the best role Kurt has had since "StarGate." " S o 1 - dier" won't be the best movie you've seen this year but it certainly won't be the worst, either. Everyone should go watch a science fiction movie once a month so we'll see as a collective conscious that maybe we need to slow down a bit and step back to access were we are before moving so fast we miss the fact that we've crossed into dangerous territory for which there's no exit and no road back. I will now get off my soap box. "Soldier" is rated R for extreme violence and adult themes.
