  • news October 28,1998 i man 72% of Students Have World Wide Web Access OPI More than 72 percent of the students "living hi Western Carolina University's residence halls are networked and connected to the World Wide Web at the midway point of Western's first semester as the first NC. public institution requiring freshmen to come to campus with networkable computers. That's a higher percentage than university officials anticipated, since the new computer requirement pertains only to freshmen. Students enrolled at WCU prior to adoption of the policy are not being asked to meet the requirement. "We are seeing a lot of sophomores, juniors, and seniors returning to campus with their own computers," said David Cox, systems administrator in WCU's Computer Center and technician for the ResNet computer network in the residence halls. "Many upperclassmen are seeing the benefits of having a computer in your own room at your own desk, available 24 hours a day, and they don't want to be left behind." Of the nearly 2,900 students living in WCU's residence halls this semester, about 2,100 of them (72.4%) are hooked up to ResNet, Cox said. That percentage will, of course, increase next year with the arrival of the second crop of students required to report to campus with their own computers, he said. In addition to a larger number of ResNet users than expected this fall, Cox also said that the first semester of WCU's computer requirement has seen fewer glitches than he anticipated. He credits an 18-member student staff for making the first few weeks of the school year go so smoothly. Sixteen ResNet computing assistants (RCAs) — two in every residence hall — help students connect to the university's network, and work to help solve any software or hardware issues. Two other senior students are working as ResNet computing consultants. ' Students were selected for the positions on the basis of their computer knowledge and skills, and then underwent an intensive two-week training session prior to the opening of school, Cox said. The student staff members also will offer special workshops to ResNet users on a variety of advanced computer topics. Those sessions will be held in the residence halls. Hwy 441 Fax 631-9592 n\ October 20 Officers responded to a fire alarm in Reynolds caused by cigar smoke in the smoking lounge on the 2nd floor. October 21 A parent reported that her daughter, a student, had not returned home from class at 9:28 p.m. The daughter arrived home shortly after the call. A University Center employee reported that a male was uncooperative and disorderly after she advised him of the smoking policy at 11:53 p.m. The subject left when she called the police. October 22 A parent reported that his son was missing. The student's roommate in Albright Hall states that he left to visit a friend in Raleigh last Friday. The investigation is continuing. October 23-25 Officers responded to a report of an intoxicated male in Walker Hall at 11:00 p.m. on 10/23. The subject was argumentative and throwing up in the restroom. While there, Housing staff discovered another male student who had passed out in a room and vomited. The second male was transported to Harris Regional for treatment. The first male settled down and was released to the custody of a friend who was sober. Officers assisted WCU EMS with an intoxicated student who had vomited and passed out in the restroom in Reid Gym during the Midnight Madness Basketball event. The subject was transported to Harris Regional Hospital and was released at 4:00 a.m. and transported back to campus by University Police officers. Officers assisted Housing staff with two intoxicated students in Leatherwood who were suspected of breaking a window at 12:35 a.m. on 10/24. The students were identified, counseled, and the incident is referred to Student Affairs. Officers observed a male student drive through a barricade on Belk Drive during the WCU/UTC football game at 2:15 p.m. Officers stopped the vehicle on NC 107 south and charged the driver with DWI and reckless driving. Intoxilyzer results were .09%. Officers responded to a fire alarm in Belk caused by an activated pull station at 3:30 p.m. While there, they discovered a large quantity of broken glass and beer bottles in the hallway and evidence that people had urinated in the hallway. Officers assisted victims of a traffic accident which occurred on Edgewater Road where a vehicle ran off the road and into the river. Two passengers, a female student and a male former student, were transported to Harris Regional Hospital where they were treated for injuries. One male former student was transported to the medical center at the University of Tennessee for treatment. The driver, a male student, was arrested for DWI by the NC Highway Patrol.
