Roberts Bob Dole speaks at the student-only forum on Tuesday in the UC. by Don Costello Managing Editor Former presidential candidate and long time Senator Bob Dole spent Tuesday on campus speaking to a group of Western Carolina students and members of the Cullowhee community. Dole was brought to WCU as part of the university's new Chancellor's Speaker Series, which is designed to connect Western's students with national and international events through a series of notable personalities, according to Chancellor John Bardo. "We want students and the community to have a chance to meet these people and talk with them to get to know them as human beings and not just someone on TV," Bardo told a crowd of nearly 2,100 in the Ramsey Center. Dole spoke to the crowd on the topic of "Experiences and Views of an American Statesman." He told the crowd about some of the failures in his life and openly joked about his failed run at the presidency in 1996. Dole's speech also included a segment about the leadership qualities of President Dwight Eisenhower and how Eisenhower's leadership led him to success as president and as commander of the European forces in World War II. "Eisenhower set a great example for my generation," Dole said. "Eisenhower had a lot of that character that defines a great leader." The former senator also spoke about the generation that is represented by college age students today. "I'm excited about young people," said Dole. "We hear so much bad news about this generation but I have no doubt that, as we move into the next century, we'll have the type of leadership we need." Earlier in the day, Dole met with more than 200 WCU students in a town meeting in the University Center. He told of his service in World War II, his tenure in the United States Congress, and his unsuccessful bid for president. Dole then answered questions from the students on various topics such as education, cam paign finance reform, and the possibility of his wife, Elizabeth, running for president in the next election. The price tag for Dole's appearance was $50,000, taken from a reported $1.1 million one-time non-recurring activity fund that is spent at the discretion of the chancellor. The fund also financed Dole's expenses while in Cullowhee, including a chartered plane that flew him into the Jackson County Airport. Bardo announced to the crowd in the Ramsey Center that Dole gave $10,000 of the money back for the golden education program, a program that encourages underprivileged children to go to college when they finish high school. "We'd like to do one or two [speakers] per year," said Dr. Judy Dowell, assistant to the chancellor. Dowell acknowledged that the Chancellor's Speaker Series has been in the making for several years.
