Specialty Weapons Training By Chock Vaughan-Uoyd Staff Writer This week the Department of Military Science has had a busy week training. The students in ROTC were in action at the Jackson County Rifle Range. After the cadets were instructed in the proper safety precautions that are observed on a live fire range they proceeded in battle-sight zeroing the M-16 rifle. The cadets had the chance to fire the weapon on several targets each at different distances. The KOTC class has grown to the capacity that the cadets were broken into three companies to do the actual shooting. While the first company was doing the firing the other company went through concurrent training. The concurrent training consisted of four speciality weapons that the Army uses today. The class on the M-16 rifle, the M-60 machine gun, and the.45 caliber pistol included the assembly and disassembly of the weapon. The M-203 grenade launcher class included instruction on the different types of ammunition used in different situations. An interesting fact about ROTC is that it pays the third and fourth-year cadets monthly. This month the Department of Militery Science paid the WCU students in ROTC $15,819.09.
