  • Sports Western Carolinian/September 30, 1982 Cats Survive Clemson ;Confer<*nceBegins by Russ Randolph! The exhibition season is over for Western Carolina University's football team. The "real' season, better known as the Southern Conterence championship race, begins Saturday night when the Catamounts travel to Johnson City, Tennessee to face East lennessee State's Bucaneers. "We think our first four games have prepared this team for a serious run at the championship," said Bob Waters. Western's head coach. Western Carolina, The Citadel, and Marshall spent the month of September playing non-conference teams and all three still have to be considered contenders despite mixed reviews in their early non-conference games. VM1 (1-0), T I-Chattanooga (1-0). furman (1-1), Appalachian State (0-1) and East Tennessee State (0-1) have already faced conference opponents. "This will be the most important game to date,"said Waters of the game with last Tennessee State despite the Buccaneer's 0-4 record. "It is critical that we win Saturday night if we are going to be a factor in the conference race because we play only six conference games (his sear," he explained. At the corresponding time last season, the Catamounts were already eliminated from the league's championship picture after losing three conference games in September. 1 he Catamounts are 1-3, but Waters is encouraged by his team's last two performances -a 38-3 win over Mars Hill and a 21-10 loss to Clemson. "Our early season schedule has bought us some time to bring our young offensive and defensive lines along to the point that we think they can play Southern Conference football," noted Waters. Western put together its best effort of the still young season last Saturday afternoon at Clemson. The Catamounts led 10-9 at halftime as they rolled up 255 yards of offense in the opening 20 minutes while limiting the defending national champions to 122 yards. However, a pass interception and two short punts The Catamount defense stopped three Clemson drives inside the 10 yard line. gave Clemson the field position it needed to pull out a 21- 10 victory. Ronnie Mixon riddled the Tigers' secondary for 244 yards through the air while his defensive teammates, led by safety Richard Dukes, linebacker Alan Johnson, and ends Bernard Jones and Louis Cooper, stopped three Clemson drives inside the 10 yard line. "It was one of the finest defensive efforts I've seen in quite awhile," says Waters. "We made some defensive mistakes, but the effort was outstanding," he emphasized. "Our offense played well against the most talented defense we have ever faced," he added. "Our kicking game has to take much of the blame for the loss, " said Waters as he pointed to short punts ofl2 and 26 yards and three missed field goals. East Tennessee State has lost to Tennessee Tech (14- 0), VMI (21-3), East Carolina (30-0) and James Madison (15-10) as its offense has yet to jell. The Buccaneers lead the series that began in 1932, and shocked the Catamounts last season when they came back from a 21 -0 first quarter deficit to win going away by a 32-23 count. Catamounts Schedule rated the 15th toughest in NCAA Div. 1-AA Football - Western Carolina's 1982 football schedule is rated as the 15th toughest among Di\ ision I-A A schools, according to a formula devised by the NCAA. The formula takes into consideration the oppositions performance from the previous season, projected strength or weaknesses and records against Division 1-A and 1-.AA competition. Idaho State, the defending NCAA Division 1-AA champion, was judged to have the most difficult schedule. The only other Southern Conference school with a football schedule ranked among the most difficult is Marshall, rated 28th. Football Notes - Dean Biasucci has fallen from the top of the NCAA Division I-AA field goal kicking statistics to a tie for second place in the latest national stats. Mark Jensen of Boise State has taken over the lead with his 2.33 field goals per game average while Biasucci is averaging 2.0 per game.... Ronnie Mixon is now ranked 20th in total offense, averaging 189.3 yards per game....The Catamounts rank first in Southern Conference passing with a 208.3 yards per game average....The fourth quarter has proven to be the Catamounts downfall to date. The Cats have not scored in the fourth quarter this season and have given up more points in the fourth quarter than any other period....Coach Bob Waters labeled the performance of defensive end Louis Cooper at Clemson as "one of the most outstanding defensive performances we ever had at Western Carolina. The 6'2", 226 pound sophomore from Marion, SC accounted for 8 solo tackles, 5 assists, caused two fumbles and made three tackles on third down plays inside the WCU 10 yard line. Players of the Week Players of the week for radio station WWCU and the Western Carolinian are as follows: As the offensive players of the week the coaches all agreed that is was a tie between both the team's receivers—Kristy Kiser and Eric Rasheed, and indeed, what game these two players had against the Clemson Tiger last week. Against Clemsen, Rasheed made five phenominal catches that boosted Ronnie Mixon's passing attempt to 244 yards total. With the combination of his speed and quick *••**•******•****** * moves, Rasheed was able to manipulate into the open many times against a team many said Western could never compete against. "Eric never cesses to surprise me," said head coach Bob Waters after last Saturday's 21-10 defeat to Clemsen. "Despite the loss, our receivers caught the football like they never had before, and I am very pleased with the progress Eric inparticularly, has made. He's gonna be a fine player for us this season. You can count on that." Kristy Kiser is the other receiver *************************** that also receives this week's honor of player of the week. Kiser and Rasheed are very close in game statistics, but Kiser holds the lead in receptions with 15 and 233 yards, averaging 3.8 catches per game. Kiser is the punt return specialist, and has yet to drop a football in four games from that post. "Kristy is one of the best receivers we've seen here in a long time, and that's saying alot," said Waters of the 5-9, 170 pound junior. P;eople can't believe how he can catch the football, and sometimes I can't either. His catches against Clemson were a big'influence on the overall performance of our offense at Clemson, and if things go as I hope they will, Kristy will- make our otlense look good in many games this season." As the defensive player of the week it was a unanimous decision by the coaches for Louis Cooper, a 6-2, 225- pound sophomore end from Marion, S.C. Coach Waters labeled the performance of Cooper in the Clemson game as "one of the most outstanding defensive performances we ever had here. Louis has come on strong every game, and I look for him to keep improving. He was what made our defense shine against Clemson," Waters said. Against the Tigers Cooper accounted for 8 solo tackles, 5 assists, caused 2 fumbles, and made 3 tackles on third down plays Jack The Dipper For the best ice cream In the area j,,******************* : Over 30 flavors J * .» ^ * ***************** ^ Hot Fudgecake Noon 'til 9 p.m. daily % »*■ e* ><*><* *es THE S| ©IPPER T Highway 107 * * * * I ************** *_*_* * * * * * * * * *_*_* ********* * ** ********* *********************************** * * * * ********** * * * *j * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * x .J.
