  • inian Cella-brate Good Times, Come On! New QB Leads Cats to Success in SoCon by Don Costello Managing Editor Times have changed for Justin Cella. Just 17 months ago he was staring down a career of Big Ten football at the University of Illinois. Lou Tepper, then head coach of the Illini, had given him a scholarship. Tepper, however, was replaced before Cella could make a debut in the 1997 season. The new head coach, Ron Turner, brought his expertise from the Chicago Bears and promised to turn the Illinois program back towards the top of the Big Ten. Cella, however, was not in Turner's future plans. Turner brought in two new QBs and Cella was left to ponder his future as a member the Fighting Illini. Through a coaching contact at Holy Cross, Cella met up with WCU's assistant head coach Maury Waugh and it has turned into Catamount history. On Saturday, 600 miles from Cullowhee, in West Lafayette, Indiana, Cella's former team squared off against the Purdue Boilermakers and were handed their 25th loss in their last 27 games. While the Illini are staring another dismal season in the face, the Catamounts felt the benefits of Cella's expertise as he led them up and down the field en route to a 24-21 over conference rival Chattanooga. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Cats after they had back-to- back conference wins against The Citadel and East Tennessee State. Cella threw for 179 yards against the Mocs, including an 85-yard toss to Aaron Right in the second quarter that put the Cats up 17-14 just before the half. Aside from the passing performance, Cella also scored what turned out to be the winning touchdown for Western. It was a 15-yard scamper in the third quarter that put the Cats up 24-14. Even though he is new to the WCU offesive system, coach Bill Bleil is continuing to work more of the offense into Cella's game performances. "It's not an easy offense to learn but he's doing well in it," Bleil said. Winning on the college front is something new for Cella. As a redshirt freshman he saw the University of Illinois Nominations are now being accepted for "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges 99 Undergraduate juniors & seniors in a degree program with a minimum, of 80 semester hours and 2.50 Q.P.R. are eligible. When he arrived in Cullowhee, Cella found the scenery different than down state Illinois. "Cullowhee's a lot smaller," said Cella. "I've had much more of an opportunity here." The opportunity hit Cella as soon as his first season opened at Western Carolina when he was inserted into the starting role in the season opener at Duke. He had a great performance against ETSU the included the game-winning score in overtime that gave WCU their biggest win in the Bill Bleil era. Cella showed great poise under center in his first action since he was at the helm of Neptune High in New Jersey. His senior year at Neptune he led the team to the state championship while passing for 2,100 yards. As the Illini sit near the bottom of the Big Ten, the Catamounts are tied for third in the Southern Conference. Saturday, as the Illini lost 42-9 at Purdue, Cella was asked if Cullowhee was better than Urbana- Champaign. His answer: "Yeah, we're winning." Sign-Ups begin NOW! It also was the first performance of the 1998-99 WCU Dance Team. Team tryouts were held in early October. There was a four-day workshop in which those trying out learned a variety of dances that were used in the try-out. Finally, out of the 70 potential members, 18 were chosen through the final audition. Highlighting the returning members of the dance team is captain Adirana Castor. Also, two co-captains this year will be Kat Arcebal and Heather Maree. Other returning team members are Lynn Berry, Crystal Douthit, Lindsay Duvall, Donna Evans, Adrianne Glassey, Amanda Grinnell, Jennir Martinez, Andrea Mears, and Sarah Reid. Angela Davis, Monique Douglas, Amber Mann, Melanie Parker, Courtney Tyson, and Whitney Whitworth are the new members on the team. The Dance Team will perform at all home men's and women's basketball games. They will also perform at the Southern Conference basketball tournament.
