  • B± NEWS August 18, 1999 UNC Board of Governors, Pres. Molly Broad Visit WCU Discuss Future Plans for University System by Seth R. Sams News Editor The UNC Board of Governors were on campus the better part of last week, along with UNC President Molly Broad, to view the WCU campus and give a "Report to the People." Broad and Benjamin Ruffin, Chairman for the Board of Governors, gave their report this past Wednesday in the rather full Coulter Recital Hall, hosting members of the state legislature, several UNC chancellors, and many residents of North Carolina who were interested in the progress of the UNC system. The report was the second in a series of forum style events planned by the Board to discuss the UNC system and it's goals. Broad discussed the University's three-fold mission of teaching, research and public service, pointing out that UNC institutions received the third largest amount of federally awarded research funds in the country last year, which were awarded based upon the merit of research reports published by variously awarded universities in the system. She also mentioned the need for funds over the next several years to continually progress towards bettering North Carolina's public universities, and to help the UNC system better fulfill their three missions. The projected amount needed over the next 10 years, according to Broad, is $6.9 billion, not surprising since the recent report of an expected 7.4 percent student enrollment increase over the next ten years, which would increase UNC enrollment from 155,000 students to over 202,000. Broad and Ruffin discussed the need for the state bond, which was introduced to legislation last semester, but failed to pass. Referring to the last bond package pushed through the North Carolina general assembly, Ruffin said that the Board was "used to one year delays," and that the Board of Governors would not give up the currently proposed bond package so easily. Following the "Report to the People," the Board of Governors held their August meeting, where a task force presented a report on what could become the first ever state financial aid program in North Carolina. "Many other states follow this practice," Broad said, citing Georgia's recently created "Hope Scholarship." Waste Disposal Stickers The Jackson County Solid Waste Advisory Board discussed at its last meeting in July a change in the current waste disposal system. The change would require anyone using dump cites in Jackson County to buy a $ 1.25 sticker at most convenience stores for each bag of trash weighing up to 30Ibs. Disposing of separated recyclables would remain free. The discussion came after Transylvania County adopted the same plan. Selling Center Donation Wachovia Bank recently donated $50,000 towards equipment and furnishings for the upcoming Center for Professional Selling, to be built on WCU's campus as part of the workforce development facility, which is to be federally funded and carries a proposed price tag of $6 million.
