  • western ■ • • arolmian Elon Outlasts the Cats by Daniel Hooker The Elon College Fightin' Christians held the Western Carolina Catamounts scoreless in the second half to mount a 10-point rally in route to a 17-16 win on a cold day in Burlington. With the win, the Christians improve to 7-3 on the year, while the Catamounts dropped to 3-6. The win by Elon was their first over a Southern Conference opponent since 1971, when they beat the Cats. It was also the first win over WCU in four games, and the loss guarantees the Cats will have a losing season in coach Bill Bleil's first year. Following the disappointing loss, Bleil stated, "We didn't do anything to help ourselves. They [Elon] kept battling." He added, "We had control ofthe game with a nine-point lead and just let it get away with a series of breakdowns." Things started out good for the purple and gold. Junior Mike Sellers returned the opening kickoff out to the 38-yard line. From there the Catamounts drove 45 yards in six plays, but had to settle to for a Ken Hinsley 35-yard field goal. Hinsley added a 31-yard score right before half-time capping off Marcus Bradley's 38-yard fumble recovery return. It was the last time that the Catamounts would add to their tally on the scoreboard in the game. It was a story that is played out in many games where the offense struggles. Western's defense held the potent Elon ground game down over the majority ofthe game, but when the offense broke down in the second half, the defense became worn down. The defense was led by senior free- safety Eric Johnson with 12 tackles and senior linebacker Marcus Bradley with 10 tackles, one for a loss of 10 yards, and two sacks. He also recovered a fumble caused by Anthony Jenkins and returned it 38 yards. Cedric Crudup was third with nine tackles, and broke up a pass. "Defensively, we did a nice job of holding their running game to around 100 yards and played well enough to win with the exception of three or four plays," noted Bleil. "That was the best job we've done defending an option offense." However, the offense couldn't produce in the second half. Several drives were stopped short by failures on third downs, resulting in a dismal 17 percent third-down conversion ratio. "I thought they [the WCU offense] looked pretty good in the first half. We backed off, we weren't aggressive enough in the second half. We tried to run the ball and they just loaded up on us," commented Bleil. Sophomore quarterback Shawn Snyder was intercepted for the first time in two starts. The offense only totaled 89 yards through the air, but tallied 197 on the ground. The ground attack was led early by Brad Hoover. On the first possession, he rambled for a 34-yard run that set up the first Hinsley field goal. Hoover finished with 70 yards. Tracy Biggs had his fifth 100-yard performance this season, as he gained 129 yards, on 23 carries, including his career long 73- yard touchdown scamper. It was the longest given up by Elon this year and the longest that Western has had this season. Despite holding the Fightin' Christians offense down throughout the game, Elon did break a couple of big plays. With a 16-10 lead and 2:27 remaining on the clock, the Christians' quarterback Derrick Moore connected with junior receiver Jerry Wallace for a 78-yard touchdown pass that appeared to break the Cats. However, Western wasn't through. The Cats drove from their own 37-yard line to the Elon 25, overcoming both a third- and fourth-down situation. The main key play on the final drive came on fourth and short. Synder found senior Kenya Crooks open over the middle, and Crooks pulled it in, keeping the drive alive. With time dwindling, Bleil entrusted his great kicker, Ken Hinsley, to win the game for his team. Unfortunately, the 42-yard kick attempt was low, resulting in a block by the Christians, and a loss for the Cats. The chance for a winning season is spoiled for the Catamounts. However, by defeating arch rival Appalachian State this weekend, all of the previous losses will be overlooked. Game time is set for 1:00 in Kidd Brewer Stadium on the campus of App. State in Boone.
