  • ■man Catamounts Play Big at Homecoming by Mike Poston Contributing Writer Western did something that a homecoming crowd has not seen in two years. The Cats won the game and they won it with big plays. Punter Ken Hinsley made the first big play for the Cats when he booted a 85 yard punt that was downed at the one yard line that led to a score in WCU's 24-21 win over Chattanooga. With that kick, Hinsley set the Southern Conference and the school record for the longest punt. The old Southern Conference record, 84 yards, was held by Billy Smith of UTC and Jim Kerr of Furman (Smith in '88 and Kerr in '66). The old school record was a 78 yard punt by Steve Kornegay against the Citadel in 1982. "It was exciting," Hinsley said of his 85 yard punt, "But, it was more exciting to win Homecoming." "The kicking game is such a big part of our success," said coach Bill Bleil following the gam,. "Ken really helped us out alot today." Football being a game of field position, Hinsley kick-pinned the Mocs deep in their own territory. The defense forced the Mocs to punt and Brad Hoover scored a touchdown on the next drive. "We try to win the field position battle," Bliel said. The next big play came when Justin Cella threw an 85 yard strike to Aaron Wright for a touchdown to give the Cats a lead they would not give up. Wright is a first-year transfer player who played at the Univeristy of Michigan last season. The last and most important big play was made by senior DeNorrise Burton. Down 24-21, with 4:05 left in the game the Mocs began their last drive of the game at Western's 45 yard line. The Mocs drove the ball to the 19 yard line and after trading off-sides penalties, the Mocs would run their last play. Mocs quarterback Brian Hampton threw for the end zone, but Burton broke on the ball and intercepted the pass on the three yard line. "I anticipated the route," Burton said, I read the play and the rest fell into place." Burton's interception capped off Western's big day and big win. The Cats will attempt to remain in the top half of the conference when they go into Lexington, VA, to play VMI. Coming into the season the Keydets were the only Southern Conference team the Cats had a winning record against. WCU is 4-3 in Lexington. Burton, Hinsley Receive National Honors by Don Costello and Daniel Hooker Staff Two Western Carolina football players were named national players of the week for their performance last Saturday against Chattanooga. Senior cornerback DeNorrise Burton was named the Defensive Player of the Week by The Sports Network, a national sports information service. Burton had two interceptions in the win over the Mocs, including the game-saving grab near the goal line to keep Chattanooga out of the end zone with less than a minute remaining in the game. Burton also broke up two more passes and leads the Cats with eight pass breakups on the year. He also has 32 tackles, 23 of them solo. It was sweet revenge for Burton who was covering last year when the Mocs connected on a big play late in the game that they would eventually win. "He's one of the best athletes on this team," said coach Bill Bleil. "DeNorrise played well and saved the game for us; thank god he did." Burton was also named the Southern Conference Defensive Player-of-the-Week. It is the third time this year that a Catamount has been given this award. Eric Johnson and Anthony Jenkins were the other two recipients. Ken Hinsley was named as Special Teams Player of the Week by the Sportsticker, another national sports information service. Hinsley, who ranks eighth in the nation in punting with an average of 43.8 yards per punt, connected for a Southern Conference and WCU record punt of 85 yards in the game against Chattanooga. The previous school record was a 74-yard boot by Steve Kornegay versus The Citadel in 1982. The SoCon record was held by Jim Kerr of Furman who had a 84- yarder against Tampa in 1966 and Billy Smith of Chattanooga who connected for 84 yards against Appalachian State in 1988. "We had great field position after Ken's kick and that led to a key score," Bleil said. Bleil also said after reviewing the game film that the return man for Chattanooga had his heels on the 43-yard line and as soon as the ball left Ken's foot he started backtracking and had no chance to catch the ball. The Astro- Turf may have helped the yard- I Ken Hinsley age but the punt, noted Bleil, traveled 61 yards in the air. He averaged 48.4 yards on five punts in the game, as well as connecting on a 39- yard field goal and a long extra point. Hinsley's three-extra points extended his school-record consecutive extra point streak to 77. Hinsley was rated the Number 2 punter in I-AA football by The Sporting News in the preseason polls and has attracted the attention of NFL scouts, though none were in attendance on Saturday. Lady Cats Fall to Tennessee by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor The Western Carolina University volleyball team made its second-straight trip to Tennessee last night. And for the second time in as many games, they came home with a loss. The Lady Vols are now 10-1 at home this season, making them one of the toughest teams for the Lady Cats to beat on the road. Tuesday night, the University of Tennessee's Lady Volunteers handed the Cats the most recent loss in straight sets 3- 0(11-15,7-15,13-15) in Knoxville. WCU falls to 16-11 overall on the year. The Lady Vols are 15-6 on the season in one of the premier volleyball conference's in the nation, the SEC. The Catamounts also fell to the Lady Vols last season when they made the trip to Reid Gym. Freshman Christy Attebery recorded a match-high in kills (16) and digs (13) for the Cats, but also committed six errors, lowering her attack percentage to .200. Junior Ramsey Herron also recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. One dark spot for Western was the play of Shannon Sweeney. She tallied 12 kills, but committed 11 errors, which was a match-high. When Sweeney doesn't play well, the Cats don't play well. Jessi Fick and Bri Milan-Williams handed out double-digit numbers in assists, 30 and 17, respectively. Last Thursday, Western traveled to Chattanooga to take on Southern Conference opponent, the Lady Moccasins. Western, who was attempting to avenge an early season loss, fell 3-0 (15-8, 15-13, 15-11). Western's attack was led by Christy Attebery with a match-high 14 kills. She was followed by Shannon Sweeney with 11 kills. Jessi Fick handed out 30 assists and Elizabeth Smith booked 11 digs. Keeya McManus blocked UTC five times, a match-high, and Holly Poff recorded four blocks in the losing effort. The Catamounts return home this weekend for the final home matches of the year. Saturday, UNC Greensboro comes to Cullowhee for a 2:00 match. Western lost 3-2 in Greensboro in a match that "just got away." Davidson College comes to Cullowhee on Sunday at 2:00. The Wildcats defeated WCU 3-0 earlier in the year. The Cata^ mounts will then embard on a four-game road swing until they depart for Boone on November 20-22 for the Southen Conference Tournament.
