  • inian WCU Rugby Defeats Auburn University in Dramatic Fashion by Mark Smitfi Rugby Club This weekend the Western Carolina University Rugby team headed south to Alabama to play in a three-way tournament with Auburn University and Jacksonville State. Due to homecoming activities, the team traveled without seven first team starters, allowing several 'B' team players the chance to step up and receive playing time.. The first game was against Division I- A powerhouse Auburn University. The Catamounts started slowly, but took a 3-0 led with a converted penalty by Mark Smith midway through the first half. Following the score the Tigers applied pressure to the Cat defense and on the stroke of half time scored a non-converted try to take a 3-5 led into the break. However, at the start of the second half the Catamounts applied pressure to the Tigers, resulting in Dave Peterson powering over the line to add 5 points to Western's total, making the score WCU, 10-5. The second half finished much like the first with Auburn threatening the Catamount line. The defense stood strong but was unable to stop Auburn scoring a converted penalty try and taking a 10-12 led with three minutes remaining. From the restart, Western's solid defense forced Auburn backward to their try zone. With 30 seconds remaining Auburn had the ball, but were under pressure from the Catamount Pack. Following a miss-kick by the Auburn captain, the ball was recovered by the Catamount fly half, who subsequently attempted a 35-yard drop goal. As the ball sailed between the posts for three points, the whistle went and the Cats had won 13-12 in dramatic fashion. Following the contest with Auburn, the Cats faced Jacksonville State. However, due to minor injuries WCU were further depleted in numbers. The Catamounts took the field for the second game with the inclusion of three Auburn B-team players. However, this game was just as exciting as the first, with the lead swaying back and forth. Unfortunately, Jacksonville State's. A-team was too organized for the make shift Catamounts, and the Tigers won the game 19-16. Mark Prichard (5) and Dave Peterson (5) both scored tries for the Cats with Mark Smith adding two penalties (6). The final game between the Auburn Tigers and the Jacksonville Gamecocks ended the tournament with a 17-5 victory for Auburn. Overall, the weekend was a great sue cess. The win over Auburn with a depleted side further emphasized the potential of the WCU rugby team. The Catamount Ruggers have a toughl schedule to end the semester, with roacU trips to UNCC (November 7), ECU/Old Dominion (November 14) and a home game with arch-rivals, Appalachian State (November 21). Bad Girls Midnight Madness Makes Cameo by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor Last Friday night, as a part of the Homecoming activities, the WCU basketball teams were introduced to Western North Carolina at the annual Midnight Madness celebration. Men's head coach, Phil Hopkins, said that the event "was fun." "I was impressed and pleased with the crowd. I thought our band, cheerleaders, and the Dance Team were outstanding, as they always are," said Hopkins. Festivities started out with the 'Cat House band.' Last year, the pep band was voted as the "best band in the Southern Conference," which translates into, "the band that opposing coaches hate to face." Then, the women's basketball team, equipped with its second head coach in as many years took to the floor. Head Coach Jill Dunn is looking for improvement over last year's season. The women's scrimmage saw senior point-guard, Tamara McMahan unofficially led all scorers with nine as the white team won 13-8. In the middle of all the action, the Dance Team wowed the crowd with their 1998-99 squad and new dances. The cheerleaders also showed off their stunts. Prior to the men's scrimmage, a four- team competition including one member of each team competed in the three-point shooting contest. Teams of Beth Currence- Casey Rogers, Amy Proffitt-Stacy Ervin, Laura Echols-Michael Plavich, and Jackie Stepp-Michael Green tried to make as many three's as they could in 45 seconds. Following tight competition, the team of Stepp-Green won with a combined score of 14. Another tradition of the WCU Midnight Madness is the slam-dunk exhibition. This was where Robert Anderson, Michael Green, Joey Bryson, John Lewis, Thomas Mosely, Dwayne Hood, and Cory Largent showed the crowd their "ups" and slamming ability. In the men's scrimmage, unofficially, junior college transfer, the white team defeated the purple team, 34-31. Michael Green scored game-high 15-points for the purple team, while junior Joey Bryson led the white team with 12. Others that looked impressive in the scrimmage were Thomas Mosley and John Lewis, who both scored 9 points, and freshman point-guard, Casey Rogers who handed out key assists. However, Hopkins was quick to point out that it was simply a scrimmage and they still need to work on things. "I know that nobody plays defense in those kind of games," explained Hopkins. "But, it was a fun game. I though the guys played hard and played well together." The women's season starts in Cullowhee November 10 as the traveling team, the Smokey Mountain Swarm, come to town. The men kick off their season November 2, when Crossfire comes to the Ramsey Center.
