FROM THE EDITOR JTJ may not be as exciting as the Hale-Bopp comet, but is surely not as misguided as Heaven's Gate. One wonders if the Heaven's Gate bunch- or Solar Temple or others of their ilk- are not the very antithesis of what we genealogists attempt to do. After all, we celebrate the family, both in the present and the past. Those groups, on the other hand, make certain that the family is one of the first structures that they put aside for their recruits, so that they may fill the void by their Utopian gimmicks. What a tragedy. Our members, for example, are more down to earth. We do things like respond to the questionnaire in an earlier issue. Make sure that you see these accounts, some of which are extensive, others less than a sentence, but all of which are interesting. Then celebrate spring by interrupting your yard work or vegetable gardens (or the battle against ubiquitous kudzu) by reading what Rick Frizzell is up to with a book; by perusing another series of delayed births abstracted by Ruth Shuler, by poring over several northern Jackson County families submitted by Clint Gold; by catching up on one of the Buchanan descendancies in Texas; by enjoying two short pieces by Lloyd Cowan and another cemetery by Mack Sutton. In short, not the stuff which might transport us to the UFO's, just the regular excellent work of JCGS members. We welcome a number of new members this time, and are glad to say that only a few members misplaced their checkbooks. Thomas W. Johnson of Salt Lake City responded to the "Turpin Box" in the January-February issue. Look for his very detailed work in the July-August issue of JTJ. He is a direct descendant of Sarah Jane Turpin Gunter, and was able to work with the Massey litigation account. He has also located the taxes (Texas) Turpins, and is doing exciting work with Gunter ancestry. Rick Frizzell Explains the New JCGS Book Our new Society book, the Jackson County Superior Court Index 1866-1896 is now being printed. This volume Ky is a partial index to various cases during the time following the War Between the States. Cases include murder, bastardy records, assault, carrying concealed weapons, and various civil charges. This volume does not contain the actual court minutes, but rather is a synopsis of cases. Some merely mention names, others include jurors, disposition, etc. The Society owns microfilm of the actual minutes so that cases of interest can be pursued. It will serve as a good starting point for searches. Many of Jackson County's finest families are included for crimes such as affray (public fighting) and carrying concealed weapons. Apparently several years passed before the roughness of the Civil War wore off our citizens. Curiously, not all cases in the index volume are in the microfilm of the court minutes, and some cases on the microfilm are not indexed. Nonetheless, this volume is of great use. The actual court cases occupy three large leather volumes and are several thousand pages. The index consists of 130 pages of readily accesible material. We made the attempt to keep the wording and spelling exactly as it appears in the original. The same name may be spelled three or four different ways. If some material seems disjointed, this is a reflection of the clerk's original writing. The volume is softbound and will sell for $15.00. James Henry Queen, were already known to us as cousins of Michael through the marriage of Herman Haynes Queen and Vadie Marie Payne, daughter of Dora Juletta Stanford Payne, a sister of Michael's paternal grandfather. Belinda is my 4th cousin on the Hoyle side. Together Danny and I have our direct Sparks line back to 1635 and Belinda and I have the Hoyle family back to 1597. ... I met Danny and Belinda in Asheville on June 8 at a family birthday party for Belinda's aunt. I got to meet her mother and aunts and a lot of cousins I had never piet. In 1995 and 19961 went to the Hoyle Reunion which is held in Dallas, NC at the Hoyle family homestead, and have met a number of distant cousins there." All concerned would be 3rd & 4th or 5th generations back from me. Hope to talk in person to a Davidson who lives in FL and usually visits relatives in Buncombe and Transylvania Cos. in the summer. Helen Davis Cooper (Sylva) " In 19961 joined the Jackson County Genealogical Society. I concentrated a large part of my research on my husband's family. I borrowed the book Bryson Family, of Western North Carolina 1664 JQ 1980 by Lawrence E. Wood, which has helped fill out the skeleton of information that I started with on the Wood family....I have not made much progress with the Brown family because I have had so much to work with on the Wood and Bryson families. I hope to rectify that situation this year. In October 1996 I spent several days at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Among other things, I followed the Rochester NY city directories from 1860 to 1911, and located addresses of residences of my grandmother, great-grandparents, and, I think, my great-great grandfather; the names of stores my great-grandfather owned, and the one he later managed, even finding printed ^ / advertisements for those stores. I found my father listed when he was a student at the Divinity School in 27 Rochester, and the date that he left the city to go to China as a missionary. I also found books recording 7 information about the cemeteries of Sevier County, TN and located burial sites of my great-grandfather Robert Smith Atchley and his wife Louisa Emmaline Clark. Since we are fortunate enough to have a branch of the Federal Archives in Denver, I have been able to spend some time there, and found some of the Brown family in K^/ the census records there. I am also attempting to trace my Atchley ancestors back through the census as far as possible to Thomas Atchley, who fought in the Revolutionary War, and who is buried in the Alder Branch cemetery in Sevierville, TN....I have been a member of the Board of Directors of Columbine Genealogical and Historical Society in the capacity of recording secretary.... I have had negatives made of some old pictures of family members. I am printing these myself, and have distributed some of them to interested relatives. I am also assisting two great-nephews, who have lost their father and all grandparents, in beginning research of their paternal grandfather's family. I celebrated my 70th birthday...January 11, and am enclosing a check to cover life membership." Barbara Bishop (Chehalis, WA) " The most rewarding task that I've accomplished was finding the graves of my G-2 grandparents in Crawford County, MO on August 18, and having my daughter and granddaughters with me at the time. (These ancestors were) Thomas Harris, b. 1798 TN; d. 1879 MO; and Mary McMurtrey Harris b. 1800 TN; d. 1875 MO. Married Washington Co. MO mid-1820's, nine children. 1st settlers in vicinity, built log home south of Dillard, MO. The state now owns the land in that area and a mill that Francis Wisdom built before the Civil War. It's now a historical site." Jean D. Green (Carrollton, IL) " My children and I did get some information about the Ratliff genealogy. I have helped some of the younger members of our family tree by giving them information which they did not have." Nathan Thompson and have traced him to New Jersey, located his parents, and information about his mother's ancestry, the Beers, back to the emigrant from England in the 1630s; have proven that Hester Black, Nathan Thompson's wife, was the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Black; have also been able to trace their son John Wesley Thompson to Mississippi (he was the adoptive great­grandfather of the author William Faulkner); I have also obtained some related documentation from the Faulkner collection. I have been working on James H. Turpin and have proven his connection to Franklin County, Georgia, through Rabun County, Georgia. On the Dickey family I had our line traced back to James Dickey, son of George Dickey, of Northern Ireland. I have obtained material from a related descendant which ties this family line from North Carolina to Pennsylvania to Northern Ireland and then to Scotland into the 1400's. This research was done about 1900, prior to the destruction of'many of the related Irish records. I have developed some additional information on my Watson and Hughes families. Thomas W. Cowan, Sr. (Fairview) " Visited Peter Hyles (Hoyle) old house in Dallas, NC (Gaston Co.) now being restored; Conner reunion at Newfound Com. Center near W. Asheville; met lots of interesting people; visited Robert Medford (Canton); got ...info for my computer." Robert L. Mills (Winston-Salem) " Most of my genealogical research during 1996 involved the families of Beck, Dills, and Sutton. With the help of one of his grandsons, I compiled a list of the descendants of Kimsey Cornelius Beck, son of Samuel Manus and Eva Magdalin Beck, who lived most of his married life in the Carrboro-Chapel Hill area. I have collected information on other members of Sam and Maggie. I met and shared information with a great-granddaughter of Andrew Jackson Dills, a brother of my grandfather Marcus Lafayette Dills. With her help, I traced the families of Andrew Jackson Dills and George Washington Dills, another brother of my grandfather. I obtained the military records of the 5 sons of Phillip and Mary Buchanan Dills who served in the Civil War, and learned a great deal about them. Phillip and Mary also had 3 sons-in-law in the war. I have written a story based on their military records for members of my family. I was fortunate to have a short visit by a granddaughter of Thomas Ossie Dills, my father's half brother who left this area in the early 1920's and died in 1934 in Memphis, TN. She helped me with a story about Ossie for the May-June 1996 issue of JOURNEYS. From a cemetery census by Mack Sutton I learned where my grandfather's sister Rebecca M. Dills Jones, second wife of William W. Jones, is buried-Barker's Creek Cemetery. I shared information with several people and helped Fred Dills, Ruth C. Smith, and Tim Haskett with lineage charts. Dorris Beck (Sylva) " 1996 was observed as the 175th anniversary of Cullowhee Baptist Church. Research, drama, song, county picnic, ringing of the church bell 175 times by children, burying 2 time capsules (one for 25 years & one for 100 years); made special black and white membership directory, wall hangers depicting church history, discovered where original church sat in Webster; met other descendants." Irene M. Hooper (Cullowhee) " Thanks to the Heritage book, contact was made with a grandson, Grant, of Jesse Burch Cockerham, and through Grant, with LeEtta Melvin, the only surviving child of Jesse. Jesse left NC in the early 1900's and moved west, first to Washington and then to Oregon. His family there had almost no knowledge of their NC relatives. A visit in the summer of 1996 was a moving experience for all of us. In the late fall, correspondence was initiated with Jane Stafford, a great-granddaughter of Algerine Wilson (Cockerham descendant who died young and whose family became separated). Preliminary work indicates that Grant's grandmother, Laura Wilson Cockerham, may have been a sister to Jane's grandfather, Coleman Wilson, and this search will receive my primary attention in 1997." Ruth Shuler (Cullowhee) " I hosted an Addington Family Reunion at the ancestral home near Waterford and Leesburg, VA. First, I had to prove it was the ancestral home and describe how the house was renovated." Mary Jane Edwards (Fairfax,VA) " Found great-great grandfather Benjamin Williams married Nancy Gribble in Macon County 22 Jan 1838. Other marriages in NC in the 1800's : Calvin Williams married Polly Ann Gribble 3 Jan 1834; Augustin Williams married Sarah Ledbetter 10 Jul 1837; Melinda Williams married William Ledbetter 7 Feb 1834. I think all of these people were related, but have not been able to establish a connection; maybe someone has the answer." Charles B. Williams (Fullerton, CA) ^ji 30 ^y c " Went through mostof the microfilm of the court minutes for Rutherford County, NC from 1779 when the county was formed to 1820, looking for Cowards. Except for deed transactions, for which I already had copies, there were very few Coward notes. I am not quite through, but don't expect to find much else. In the very early minutes there were some pages so faded they were virtually illegible." Trudy Adams (Birmingham, AL) " Found information on great-great grandfather Norman S. Morton born in MA ca 1808, married to Eliza Gamble; found about20 additional ancestors (mainly Tapps in VA going-back to 1600's). Visited Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne IN, obtained Civil War records of great-grandfathers Cox and Morton. Larry Morton (Cullowhee) " Found transcribed estate records for my 2nd great-grandfather Benjamin F. Griffin (b. abt. 1810 SC) in a book at the Allen Co. Public Library hrFt. Wayne, IN, which linked him with Griffins in Pickens Co. SC. Later visited Pickens Co. Library & courthouse and Easley, SC library where we confirmed our connection-went back two more generations on that line! My 3rd great-grandfather Sargent Griffin gave 3 acres of land to establish the Griffin Baptist Church near Pickens, SC, in 1857. He is buried in the cemetery behind that church. Obtained Civil War service record for great-grandfather Henry M. Griffin of Calhoun Co. AL. Continued research on my German line (Steinegger) using microfilmed church records at the LDS Family History Center near Cherokee." Marilyn Morton (Cullowhee) " Contributed 90 pictures for publication and also pictures to Great Smoky Mountains National Park files. Research continued on several families. Organized photos. Shared research with others." Helen Vance (Sylva) " After researching in South Georgia for ancestor William Cone & Peter Cone Richardson graves for over 15 years, I was, with the help of Georgia Southern Archaeology Department, able to identify arid mark both graves located on dirt roads in different locations. William died 1822 & Peter died 1918. Both graves were returned to the original condition, except marked." James Hall (Hendersonville) " I found documented marriage date of grandfather Wm. R. Moss and Sadie Pierson in Hamburg Township...and my great-grandfatherand mother Wm. Roderick Pierson b. 1855 d.1919 m. 1875 to Susan White. Wm. Roderick Pierson & his dtr. Sadie Pierson Moss buried in Norton Cemetery between Highlands/Cashiers. Found documentation of Dorthula Moss (grandfather's sister) m. 23 Dec 1886 to George Bumgarner, and Dialpha Moss b. 18 Jan 1864 d. 28" Jan 1924 m. to Jahue Stewart. Found family of David Moss (Dave) in Andrew Johnson National Military Cemetery—Grave 41, Section B, Bugler, Co. K, 13th Tenn. Cav. (Rifle in National Archives in Washington) b. 1840, d. 19 Sep 1930 enrolled in service 31 Aug 1863, discharged 4 Dec 1864 (fought on Union and. Confederate). Samuel W. Moss Pvt. Service # 34370426 WWII, Andrew Johnson Cemetery, b. 13 Feb 1902, d.12 Feb 1972, buried Section N, grave 37, place of death Johnson City, TN. Found history of James L. Moss and Bessie Mae Coggins at Moss Memorial Library in Hayesville, NC. David's mother was Margaret Henderson Moss Maney, widow of Jefferson Moss of Haywood Co.,NC, m.Maney last. Lived Shooting Creek, rejected by Cherokee Hester roll. By finding these 2 families, I found we were not connected as I could tell. Still looking for Wm. R. (or Wm. H.) Moss from probably Pine Creek/Buck Creek area...have had fun, got educated, learned geography, communicated with one of David & James L.'s kin." Louise Moss Ansley (Winchester,TN) " No results. I was able to eliminate some things. Enjoyed some correspondence with some distant relatives that ^ , I discovered through my research." John Cook (Wyoming, DE) 3 1 L - " I found some of the families of the children of my paternal great-grandfather R.H. Queen, mostly by cemetery records, death records in Haywood Co., and census records. I still can't find a trace of him before age 27 in the Haywood Co. 1860 census. I also got to go to the great library in Chattanooga where I found the parents of my maternal great great grandfather, who was born in McMinn Co. TN." Peggy Queen Mason (Dillsboro) V_y " 1996 was a very good year for discoveries. During our brief residency in North Carolina, I located Double Springs Cemetery on top of Cullowhee Mountain, where my 3rd great-grandparents were buried. I was able to obtain dates of birth and death for Marcus "Mark" Lafayette Coggins and Sarah Narcis Mathis Coggins. Also, many other members of that family were buried there. I was able to locate some land records in Cherokee Co., involving my great great grandfather Phillip Bradley. I have also made some very exciting contacts on the Internet in 1996. John Landis married a widow Cynthia Moore Glass. ^-^ A son of John and Cynthia Landis, William Thomas Landis, born 16 Jul 1861 married Henrietta Elizabeth Dysart, born 5 Mar 1866. While living at Dysartsville in McDowell County, south of Marion, ten children were born to Will and Lizzie Landis. Will and Lizzie are buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Hickory. The Landis family reared their young in the McDowell, Catawba, and Burke County areas. When Herbert Landis was only eleven years old, his father Will died, leaving "Granny Landis" with ten hungry mouths to feed. Her brother, William Dysart,, a Southern Railroad Conductor, urged his sister to leave the farm and bring the children to Hickory, where the oldest could find work. Three mule-team wagons were loaded the week before Christmas 1912. The Will Landis team, and the teams owned by Sherrill Green and Lonnie Cowan, moved Ky this family to Hickory. "Granny Lizzie," a wiry little Methodist lady, immediately found work for all the children above the age of twelve. The boss of the house, she never married again. She saw all the children marry and leave home, except for Eddie, who remained with his mother until her death. Eddie, the only one still living, celebrated his 90th birthday August 7,1996. He remembers his family heritage with clarity. Herbert Jefferson Landis, his wife Zena, and daughter Elizabeth, then 15, opened the Belk Department Store in Sylva in March of 1943.
