Journeys Through Jackson 1992 Vol.02 No.05

  • record image
  • Journeys Through Jackson is the official journal of the Jackson County Genealogical Society, Inc. The journal began as a monthly publication in July 1991, was published bimonthly from 1994 to 2003, and continues today as a quarterly publication. The journal issues in this digital collection are presented as annual compilations.
  • J o u r n e y s ^ f v r o u g f i J a c l q o n The Official'Journal ofthe Jackson County QenealogicaS Society, Inc. <VoL 1% %o. 5 May, 1992 President's Message It is such a pleasure "to be-associated with the wonderful people who make up JCGS. Indeed, I have found that genealogists in general are nice folks. It is surprising how many of us, when we get into conversation with strangers, turn out to have mutual friends or even mutual relatives. That happened to me last week at the workshop sponsored by the Haywood County Society. It really is a small world, isn't it. During the past month several of our exchange agreements with other societies have been completed. We are now receiving Haywood County's Balsam Roots, Macon County's Echoes, and the_ Lincoln-Gaston Society's Footprints in Time. Also, our member Trudy Adams is sending The "Coward Family Newsletter," and the Journal of the Surry County Society is being made available for our members. All these items will be available at our future meetings. We continue to pursue new exchanges and will keep you informed as additional publications reach us. The first proofs for Jackson County Heritage are here, and we are beginning work on that phase of our book. It looks good. Remember that books can still be ordered; price is $50 if picked up in Sylva, $53.50 if mailed. Once the books are delivered, only those persons who have ordered and paid will be certain of receiving one. Any extras the company may provide on consignment will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Several local members have lost family members recently; sympathy is extended to Virginia Gustafson (husband), Irene McClure (mother), Frances Hyatt (mother and husband), Louise Edwards (brother). Carolyn ft»> Johnson and Hattie Deitz were in an automobile accident; we are glad that injuries were not serious. THIS IS THE LAST CALL FOR MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL. For those who were members in 1991, checks to David Frizzell by June 1 will keep your membership current. Don't miss your copy of Journeys Through Jackson. CALENDAR Regular Society meeting on June 11, 7:00 p.m., at St. John's will include a census workshop. Master copies of census extraction forms will be available for purchase. To put into practice what we learn, on June 13 there will be a field trip to WCU's Hunter Library where we will learn about the microfilm collection and how to use the microfilm readers. We will meet at the front entrance to Hunter (beside the Cullowhee Baptist Church) at 1:00 p.m. Regular Society meeting on July 9, 7:00 p.m., at St. John's. We hope to have a film presentation; details in the next issue of "Journeys." Saturday, July 11, is your opportunity to visit the National Archives in Atlanta. JCGS has ten seats reserved for the 1:00-5:00 time period; call me by June 1 to get your name on the list. If more wish to go we will try to secure additional seats, but I need to know soon. Regular Society meeting on August 13 - how about a picnic to end the summer? Think about it. Do you have a suggestion for a guest speaker or a program for the fall? We are open to your wishes; get in touch with any of the officers. This was also the year that Lou Annie Beck was born. She will be 93 years old on June 13, 1-992. Lou Annie was one of eight children born to Samuel Manus (16 Aug 1861 - 12 Mar 1954) and Eva Magdalin Frizzell Beck (13 Jun 1861 - 25 Feb 1954), and she is the only one living today. Other-children in this family were John Candler, Bessie Victoria Parker, Kimsey Cornelius, Ida Elmina Deitz, Emliss Dee, James Roy who died at- the age of one year, and Shirley Ray. Lou Annie's grandparents were Stephen Jackson (b. 21 Jun 1836) and Eliza Dawson Beck and Ninian Edward (Ning) (b. 11 Feb 1828) and Elizabeth (Betsy) Ann Frizzell Bryson (10 Jul 1835 - 13 Aug 1908). Lou Annie lived most of her life in the East Fork community of Jackson County except for a time when the family moved to Cramerton to work in the cotton mills. They also lived near the mouth of Cope Creek at one time where her father worked in the pole yard. She has lived in Sylva for the last fourteen years. In recounting her school experiences, Lou Annie said she did not get to go to school very much because she was needed at home. One teacher she remembers was Jerome Phillips. She talked of the games the youngsters played during recess, and she recalled that Danan Hall (Deitz) was a good friend of hers. Lou Annie said she learned to cook when her mother told her that she and her sister, Ida (Deitz) were going to the field to hoe corn and that they were leaving her at home to prepare a good dinner for the workers, so she had to learn to cook. Lou Annie remarked that East Fork Church was important in her life and was a center of social activity. She was baptized on September 8, 1914, by Rev. R.W. Green and Rev. R.N. Deitz after a revival. She later taught Sunday School and especially enjoyed her work with the children. Lou Annie brought out a doll which her brother, John, had bought and given to her on an occasion when she was making a speech at school. This occurred around 1906, so the doll is about eighty six years old. She also told about her father working at the Hog Rock mines and bringing home rations he had bought at Dave Bigham's store which was located near the mines. She also explained that they did not buy very much since they farmed and raised most of what they needed. Lou Annie never married. She lived with her parents and helped take care of them in their old age. After their deaths, she lived with her brother, Shirley, and his wife, Susie Hall Beck, until his death in 1979. Lou Annie has impaired vision and has had cataract surgery. She also has glaucoma. She still reads her Bible and the literature which members of her Sunday School Class bring when they visit her. She loves to talk and enjoys having company. Interview and Story by Dorris Dills Beck, 17 April 1992. 92-43 1902 Voter Registration for Jackson County ^ c The-1902 Permanent Voter Registration was a grandfather clause legislation. It required eligible voters (white males) to name an ancestor who had been eligible to vote in 1867. Aside from the obvious racist intent, the voter books are valuable tools for genealogical research. The- book is located in the county Register of Deeds Office. As I thought the publication of the names of those who once belonged to Co. B, 25th North Carolina Regiment, would interest many of the surviving veterans and the friends of those who could not be with us on that day to see a list of names published which I have not seen since July, 1861, in the Asheville News, I herewith transmit to you a list of their names. If you see proper to publish the list you will greatly oblige. I would be glad if every member of the company and their friends had a list of the names as an heirloom. W.H.T.
