St. John's Episcopsl Church in Sylva offered their undercroft aa a meeting place, and ten monthly meetings were held there* To get the yaar off to a good start, notice .of our tax-exempt status, both Federal end State, waa received In January. Registration with the N. C. Department of Revenue for sales tax purposes was completed in October, completing all; the', legal matters necessary for full operation as a non-profit corporation. | Membership during "the -year has increased from 104 to 125, with eleven of these being life members. The geographical distribution Includes members living in 14 North Carolina counties, 14 other states, and one foreign country. Also included are exchange agreements with four other genealogical societies. i Programs during the year have been diversified-* the formation of Jackson County1 early Macon County, members reporting on research topics, a census workshop, a film on North Carolina heritage, historic Jackson County buildings, and family associations. In addition, field tripe to WCU's Hunter Library and the national archives in Atlanta were held. Members attended a genealogy class at. Southwestern Community College, went on Individual trips to -archives .and libraries, and visited meetings of other genealogical and historical societies. The- major project undertaken during the year was completion of JACKSON COUNTY HERITAGE, VOLUME I. The Society'a book committee, co-chaired by Larry Crawford and Rick Frissell, compiled, edited, proofread, received, and dietributed 1608 copiee of this historic volume which has boon well-received. Work on a cemetery census project has been coordinated by Vice President Henry Buchanan, and an exploratory meeting waa held with officers of the Jackson County Historical Association about a joint publication. That venture has been held in abeyance until work on JACKSON COUNTY HERITAGE could be finished. Permission has been received from Jackson1 County officials to review some old county documents now In etorage, but that project, too, has been on hold'. As your outgoing president, I want to mention three items that:I believe need Continuing attention. The firat is a home—a place to call our own. Much appreciation ie due to 8t. John's Episcopal Church for letting us .use their undercroft during 1992. When the new courthouse is completed, we hope that space will be made available In the old- courthouse. But until .that time, ;we really need epace that can be dedicated to the Society's interests. The second item is tied directly to the first i we are acquiring materials constantly that need to be catalogued and made available to the members| thus, we need a librarian to keep this material in order. Once a home is acquired, then a librarian should be elected or appointed. And the third item is a long-range planning Committeei now that Volume I of the heritage book is completed, we need to determine what direction to go and what projects will best meet the objectives of the Society. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of being your president these past two yeara. It'a been a wonderful experience.
