Members and non-members are invited to submit genealogical materials for publication, with the understanding that the editor reserves the right to edit these materials for genealogical content, clarity, or taste. The Society assumes no responsibility for errors of fact that may be contained in submissions, and except where noted, the opinions expressed are not those of the editor or of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices for other non-profit groups. From the Editor A colleague remarked the other day, "Spring was nice, for that one afternoon." It seems we just get hotter and hotter here. No problem, except that it saps the energy we could be using to look up ancestors or dig up roots or whatever may be the favorite expression for this fascinating pursuit. We have run Sutton Civil War letters in previous issues, but previously we had no trouble seeing the keyboard and monitor. This time, young Sutton's letters home will have you reaching for your handkerchiefs, but will also impress you with his sense of family loyalty and his solid-rock foundation in faith. He could not have done what he did without those two guiding principles. Traci Henderson Clark spoke to our group sometime back about her paper on the Oconalufty Valley. In this issue, we proudly begin the first installment of that work. Look also for more Blantons, more of Shawna Green Hall's Mathis family, and the usual official records. We saw a statistic the other day: Approximately thirty million people are now doing genealogy in the United States. We don't have quite that many in our Society, but we are growing at unprecedented rates. Goes to show that lots of folks know what's really important. Happy hunting! To be awarded by the Board itself, it will recognize service to the Jackson County Genealogical Society and its projects. Inserted in this issue is your nomination form for the Holden Award. Please participate in this nomination process and return your form to the Society by August 1. These awards are presented at the annual Society picnic in August. We did it again! Last year's membership record of 213 has been broken dramatically in the last couple of months, and this issue will be sent to 236 of the finest folks in the United States. See page 100 for an idea of just where it goes. On June 24, the Macon Historical Society is sponsoring a genealogy workshop. See the brochures in the Society office, or write them at 36 W. Main St. Franklin, NC 28734 for details. Nothing is more fun than talking to a "new" cousin, and we have been privileged over the last week to do that twice. Steven Mallory dropped in, joined the Society, and revealed that he is an Ensley and Queen descendant. And all you Parris researchers out there take note that Don Mince, a 3rd great - grandson of Ruth Parris Mince (oldest of the 15 children of David and Mary Parris), is now in touch with his cousins in this area. Very welcome conversations with both! Steven lives in New York City, Don in LaPlace, Louisiana. 69 Journeys Through Jackson May - June 2000 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m Ky PICTURE OF MARCUS (MY DAD) ANDjS^EE ASBURY BARKER. In the second row are Lucy Ensley Cope, Lora Dills Whitney, Bertie Ella Bryson Lloyd, Irene Davis Abernathy, Nonavee Harris Parris, Bessie Snyder, and Lela Belle Mitchell. In the back are teachers Georgia Stillwell Dillard and Mell Parker Reed, along with Coach Jennings Bryson. Shared with us by JCGS member Helen Davis Cooper. Below, the train from Bryson City to Ela. Thomas Cling Bryson is on the right in the picture. He was the father of JCGS member Walter Bryson, who shares this fine old photo from 1906 with us. From the pictures in the possession of Francie Monteith Hoell, this one shows the Sylva Central High School 1930 basketball team. JCGS member Rachel Brown Phillips identifies the team as Roger Monteith (Francie's father) holding the ball, Renas Green, and Dick Green on the far right. Coach Roberts is on the left in the back row, then Frank Bumgarner, with Ray Cogdill on the far right. Front row, far left is Bill Edwards. The picture below shows Daniel Deitz as a young lad, shared by Da Rae and Bessie Deitz, and this gives us an opportunity to correct an error from our last issue, in which we stated that the little boy in the wagon picture was Daniel, when in fact it was his brother David Deitz. Ky 72 Journeys Through Jackson May - June 2000 Ky T h e B l a n t o n s o f S c o t t s C r e e k [Ed In our March - April issue, we delineated the first family of Riley Blanton. In this issue, we continue with his second family. Compiled by Larry Crawford specifically for Journeys Through Jackson.] When Riley Blanton.married Nancy Burns 5 Apr 1838 in Rutherford County, he was already the father of six living children. These children ranged in age from about sixteen down to one or two years. (We indicated in the previous issue that Jeremiah Blanton, the fourth son of the first wife Dollie Mayes, was born 19 Apr 1838. This is obviously an error, and should probably read 1835 or 1836, since another infant was buried with Dollie.) As we stated earlier, this family would be in Haywood (now Jackson) County by 1850. Riley and Nancy Burns Blanton were the parents of seven children, and we will attempt to carry the first five of these to two more generations in this issue. Child ft 1: Sarah A. J. Blanton Hoyle Sarah Ann J. Blanton was born 11 Aug 1839, and would marry on 21 Dec 1862 to Jacob L. Hoyle. This family lived in Swain County in the "North Shore" area taken from the people by the federal government in the 1940's. Three of Sarah's children would make their homes in Jackson County. Originally interred on the North Shore in the Woody Cemetery, Sarah and Jacob were removed to the TVA Cemetery at Lauada. Sarah died 14 Jul 1878. Jacob Hoyle married again after Sarah's death to Olive Lucinda Crawford Crispe. She had three sons from her first marriage, he had the children above, then they had a family as well. 'Ky 90 Journeys Through Jackson May - June 2000 C S u t t o n C i v i l W a r L e t t e rs [Ed In some earlier issues, we have published letters from the sons of David Sutton. By the time of the first letter below, James has died, and Silas is very sick, so the letters here are all written by John. They are made available to the Society through the generosity of JCGS members Betty Queen Monteith and Peggy Queen Mason. They show a familiar picture of eager but homesick young soldiers.] Dear Father Randolph County, Virginia September the 7,1861 I seat myself this evening to let you know that I am well at this time myself. Silas is still on the mend, but slow. He has had the measles and the fever both. The doctor says he is going to send him home when he gets able to travel. I will say to you that if he gets able to travel, you need not bag on any about him, for they will be four or five to come with him. Then I will be left alone, but you need (not) be afraid, but I am at home any place. I have wrote to you three or four letters about brother James a being dead. He died on the 27 of August, and he said he was a going to die the same day he died, and said he was a going to heaven and tell his mother and brother and sister not to grieve about him, but to try to meet him in heaven, but if he is buried a long place from them they will all be together in heaven, if they only try to meet him there. They say we will draw our money in a few days, which will be about twenty or thirty dollar apiece. Then Silas can come without any trouble. We are now on the Valley Mountain, and all of me regiment has left us and gone on in advance. We are staying with the sick here. They is eight of us, myself and Ben Cathey and Issac Rhinehart to wait on them. They is Silas Sutton and Frances (! Cathey and John Knight. They was all so they could not travel. You may be assured that I will ^ ^ stay with him if they was to come ten thousand Yankee on me. And also, I forgot John Keener's sick. He got the fever, but is on the mend at this time. It is suppose that we will have a battle in about two or three days, for they are moving right up to each other. They are now in a half a mile of each other. We have got misery more than I can state to you. We have got about nine or ten thousand men at this place, but great many sick at this place. We have lost about twenty men out of our regiment since we left Raleigh. I sat up three weeks, day and night. I never slept a tall until brother James died. I have been a waiting on Silas ever since. I have went through enough to kill a most any man, but old master, he's provided for me, and at the same time the mud was shoes mouth deep and has rained every other day for about a month, but I am satisfied with all that, if we can only get the Yankee out of Mason and Dixon line, and that is what we are going to try for if the last man of us gets killed. We have been successful so far and I hope with the power of God we will go thar with them. I must bring my remarks to a close. You must excuse my bad writing, for I am a setting down before my tent door by myself. Thest a writing on my knee. You must tell Uncle Jack Messer that I received his and Uncle Sol's letter on the 11th of August and was glad to hear from them that they was all well, and that is all the letter that I have got from them and tell brother Bill I received his letter August the 14, and was glad to hear from you all was well. You must tell all my friend to write to me often for I like to hear from them. You must all do the best you can, and I will do the same. We can't get change to pay our postage. Thar is some money here, but we can't get the change. We are right in the mountains where you can't get nothing. I must close. KJ Your truly son John Sutton 91 Journeys Through Jackson May - June 2000 John Sutton, Private The 6th Reg. Vol. Company A ^y Mr. Solomon Sutton Webster, N.C. Jackson County Bath County, Hot Springs Oct. 16th, 1861 Dear Brother I avail myself of the opportunity once more to let you know that I am in coming health at this time and hoping the few lines may find you all well when it comes to hand. I received your kind letter on the 10* day of October, which give me much satisfaction to hear from you and Henry both, that you both was well. You wrote to me to take good care of Silas, but he was gone from me before your lines reached me. That is one thing I done was to take good care of James and Silas both. I was up day and night about for nearly three month, and the boys all said, "John you never can stand it a tall." I told them I had a best to stand it and I could not take care of them as I wanted to, before we was right in the mountains where we could not get anything a tall. The boys all said they was the best waited on boys in the regiment. I sat up all night after night and it raining as hard as it could pour, and the mud over shoe mouth deep. They would bag at me not to go in the rain so much and I could have went twelve months for them and then I would not thought I had done too much for them if they had a lived. But I think brother James and Silas is a both better off than any of us. I think they are both in Heaven today where all troubles is ended in this hard world. But what grieves me so bad, they could not come home and see father and j mother and Brother and Sister no more. But the one that had a higher power than all of us said "Come home James and Silas". It this same life I will go to. Instructed myself on to think of home. The trouble that you all see about it. But we must all bare with it and do the best we can and the best is bad in this world. I am very feeble myself, but I am so I can knock about. I can hardly sacrifice myself long enough to write a letter. This make the third letter I have wrote since brother Silas has died and thought I would write the fourth one for fear they would get misplaced. I write this letter to you all and all the letters that I write, I write to you all for I ain't got time to write to you all [Ed. To each family member] for we are kept very busy here all thye time. For they die here about as fast as we can bury them. We have been here about 12 or 13 days and we have buried 12 or 13 men since we come to the Hot Spring. Theys all come here for their health. It is something strange Sol and Henry. There is four springs here, all together and there is one right in the middle of the rest. Come up out of the ground big enough to turn a mill and it is so hot you can't barely hold your hand in it. It is used for bathing. And all the rest so cold you can't hardly drink it. The is very good water here as you and we have in Jackson. But the water is one thing that kill so many of our boys. It works them to death. It is limestone water and the most of them is not use to it. Old Uncle John Leatherwood from Haywood lost his son last night and he is down with the fever himself, and one more of his sons is very low at this time. He come to us while we was at Valley Mountain. His son taken down about the time that brother Silas died. Brother died on the 3rd day of October, and Leatherwood son died on the 14th of October. He was with me all the time. I hear them a shouting over the grave while I am writing this letter. I must soon come to a close. A word more. Lieutenant Green is very bad off at this time, and Lieutenant Dillard Love 92 Ky c Ky K . Journeys Through Jackson May - June 2000 and Doctor John Love. But they are about on the mend, I think. And Alfred Jones and Ben Cathy and seven or eight more of our boys very low at this time. Tell uncle Joseph Messer that John is on the mend, I think. At this time I think he is knocking about but very weak. And Joseph Sutton is well. I heard from him a few days ago. Tell brother Bill and J.C. Brooks I was glad to hear from the. Tliat I ain" got time to write to them at this time. I will write in a few days a line I think. We will draw our money in a few days which will be twenty-two .dollar, but the sixty due us at this time. Tell father I dont know how the will manage about James and Silas's money yet till I see the Captain or I don't know how it go. I ain't never inquired anything about it no way. You must tell all my friend to write to me for I like to hear from them all time for it is great satisfaction to me. To read a letter from Jackson is to being satisfied with the country myself. I am very well satisfied. The house we stay in is two hundred and twenty-five feet long and has about one hundred rooms in it and it is four story high and about thirty-six fire places in it. So I must close. Yours truly Brother until death John Sutton To Sol and Henry and all the rest. Manassas Junction November 17*, 1861 Dear Father an Mother an Brother an Sister I avail myself of the present opportunity of writing you a few lines to let you know that I am in coming health at this time, and hoping tbe few lines may find you all in coming health. I felt very much desolate to seat down to write to youens without saying something about my two dear brother, but they are both gone and left me alone, but so hit is. We all have to part sooner or later. I received your kind letter which give me great satisfaction to hear from you all that you all was in coming health. We are now about one hundred and seventy-five miles from the place where I received your kind letter. We are now at Manassas Junction where the great battle was fought an they are expecting another great battle in a few days. The is about one hundred and forty thousand Southern boys at this place ready for a fight. You wrote to me what would be the chance to have brother James and Silas brought home. I don" know Father what would be the chance, but if I live I intend to have them brought home next fall if I can, but they are both put away very decent. They are about fifty miles apart. I intend to have brother James brought to where brother Silas is buried. He is buried in a fine graveyard at the Warm Spring, Virginia, a very party place. I am today about two hundred miles from that place. We are now in about thirty-seven miles of Washington Gity, and we don't know today where we will be tomorrow for they have got us in a place where they can round us any place at any call. Hit is very cold at this place. Hit is a very party [Ed. Pretty] place, but you can't hardly walk for walking on the grave of the dead men. I suppose you will hear from all of us before you get this letter, for Mr. Keener an O. Painter left us the other day an left us all well an we are still all well just as far as I know. Cousin Joe Sutton is well at this time and send his best respect to all of you and cousin James Turpin and Allen are both with us an they are both in coming health. An I left cousin John Messer at the Hot Spring, about two hundred miles from us. He was on the mend when I left him an tell his father an mother howdy for me an tell cousin Margaret Messer I received her present 93 Journeys Through Jackson May - June 2000 an tell her howdy for me an Elizabeth an Sary too. I must soon close. You must tell Delphy to be - a good gal and I want to see her very bad, an I will bring her a present if I live to come home. \y Mr. James R. Love sends his best respect to you all an we left Dillard Love and John Love about two hundred miles from where we are now. They are all very fine boys. The have been very good to me an brother James an brother Silas as long as the live. I never will forget Dillard Love. I must come to a close. You must write to me as soon as you receive this letter. Your truly son John Sutton You must give my best respect to J.C. Brooks. I ain't got time to write any more at this time. Occoquan, Va. Dec. the 14,1861 Dear Brother Set myself to rit you a few lines to inform you that I am well at this, and hoping the few lines may find you enjoying the same like health when it come to hand, if it ever do. Sol, I received your letter on the 14 of December, an was glad to hear you was well. We ain't been in no battle yet, but we are hoping for fight every day. We are right on the Potomac River and the Occoquan River. We can see the Yankees on the river. They are in the ship of war. The shoot their cannon at our men every day, but they do no damage. Our men let off at them a time or two, j and they got farther. Our men let off one cannon an hit went into Maryland and burnt up several houses. It was a distance of about five miles. You may know how the cannon can shoot. We are in a party country at this time an well satisfied, but we suspect to have some hard fighting to do in a short time an we are the boys can do it an none too lazy to do it when call on. We are in the brigade with Colonel Hampton Legion from South Carolina. We all meet tomorrow for inspection of arms. They will be a large number of men on the Potomac River tomorrow. We meet under the flag of battle so the Yankees can see us. Sol, I have been well ever since I left Jackson, except a few days ago. I was sick two or three days, but not a past a going. The following paper was written by JCGS member Traci Henderson Clark in 1991 for a class taught by Max Williams at Western Carolina University. We will publish the paper here in several consecutive issues. While the area of the title is in Swain County, the families affected here have always, been a part of Jackson County's history as well. We are grateful to Mrs. Clark for permission to use her work as an article in JTJ.] Introduction On September 2, 1940, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt officially opened the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP).1 This was the first national park created from lands not owned by the Federal government; most of the area was either purchased from individuals, private companies, or local governments.2 A large portion of the park is composed of the Oconalufty valley and the mountains surrounding this valley. At one time this remote area of western North Carolina was home to several separate communities that were bound together by family, geography, economy, and common experience. For over a hundred years the people of the Oconalufty valley shared a common history and lifestyle - until the eritire, population was removed as the result of the creation of a national wilderness. In order to understand ,the impact that the "building" of a national park had on the Oconalufty valley community, it is essential to have an imderstanding of the'background of that region and its settlers. This paper attempts to determine the type of community that was displaced by the formation of the GSMNP; it also . strives to secure a place in history for the people who chose to inhabit the Oconalufty valley, as W ' well as their descendants who were displaced by the creation of this national treasure. Background Archaeological data suggests that nomadic Indians camped and hunted along what we call the Oconalufty valley as early as ten thousand years ago. Of Iroquoian origin, the Cherokee Indians migrated south approximately one thousand years ago and inhabited more than forty thousand square miles in the southeastern United States. The Great Iron Mountains, now called the Great Smoky Mountains, separated the hunting grounds of the Overhill Cherokees from those of the Middle Cherokees.3 The Smokies made up only a small part of the territory held by the Cherokees and was referred to as "Sha - cona - ge," or the "place of blue smoke." The valley we call Oconalufty was probably called "Egwanulti" by the Cherokees and meant "by the river." This probably referred to a number of small villages located along the river. ^Egwanulti" was later corrupted by the white settlers and became Oconalufty.4 (Oconalufty has been spelled in a variety of ways over the years. Historic documents- and records use either "Oconalufty" or "Ocona Lufty" most frequently. The modem spelling used by the Cherokee Indians and the National Park Service is "Oconaluftee." This paper will use the spelling "Oconalufty". except in cases such as park...documents that use a specific spelling.) The Oconalufty valley and the northeastern portion of the Great Smoky Mountains were ceded to the United States in 1791 in the Treaty of Holston. Other portions of the Great Smokies were ceded in treaties such as the Treaty of Tellico.5 Ky 95 Journeys Through Jackson May - June 2000 Early Settlement The settlement of the Oconalufty began in the late 1790's with the appearance of land speculators like Felix Walker who quickly began to sell parcels of land to settlers. Most of the early settlers came to the "Lufty" valley by way of the old Indian trail across Soco Gap. Family names of the earliest settlers included Mingus, Enloe, Beck, Hughes, Carver, Conner, Collins, Queen, and Gibson. These families continuously owned and occupied large portions of privately owned land until the economic opportunities offered by the appearance of the timber companies in the early 1900's. While some families sold sections of their property to the logging concerns, others only leased their lands and retained ownership.7 These same surnames appeared on the 1910 Census records of the Oconalufty Township, Swain County, as well as church rolls and ownership lists during the acquisition of lands for the formation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.8 Mingus The 1810 Census of Haywood County, which at that time included the Oconalufty valley, listed the presence of a Jacob Mingus. Jacob Mingus, Sr., was born ca. 1774, in Berks County, Pennsylvania, and was of German descent. He and his wife Sara Angeline (Ryker?) were recorded as living in Carter County, Tennessee, in 1796. By 1800, they had moved to Lincoln County, North Carolina. In 1803, they moved to Buncombe County, North Carolina, and bought 100 acres of land on Scotts Creek in what is now Jackson County. Mingus sold that tract of land in 1806, and bought 300 acres of land along Raven Fork River and another several hundred acres along the Oconalufty River in the Oconalufty valley. He and his wife made their home near the mouth of what is now called Mingus Creek.9 Jacob served in the War of 1812 from March 20,1814, to May 17, 1815. He obtained the rank of sergeant under Captain Robert Love in the 43rd United States Infantry.10 Jacob and Sara had four children: Ephraim (b. September 29,1794) lived in what is now known as the Big Cove area with his wife Sophia and their eight children; Jacob, Jr. (b. June 10, 1796, d. June 2, 1866) served in the War of 1812, was a Baptist minister, and moved to Wright County, Missouri, in 1852, with his wife Sarah Seabolt; John (b. September 15, 1798, d. April 26, 1888), a physician and farmer, married Mary (Polly) Enloe, daughter of Abraham and Sarah Enloe, in 1822, raised three children and lived his entire life in the Oconalufty valley; and Mary Elizabeth (b. 1800, d. 1888) married Jacob Stillwell, a Baptist minister, and eventually settled in Macon County, North Carolina." In addition to Jacob Mingus, Sr., and his descendants, there were other Minguses who lived in the area: John and Hannah Collinger Mingus, who owned land in the Oconalufty valley; George and Sarah Baker Mingus, who owned land along the Oconalufty River; and Abraham Mingus, who owned land along Raven Fork. {We do not know} the relationship of these men to Jacob Mingus, if any.12 Enloe Tradition says that Abraham Enloe (b. 1762, d. 1841) and bis wife, Sarah Edgerton Enloe, moved from Rutherford County, North Carolina, to the Oconalufty valley between 1803 and 1807.'3 However, the 1810 Census still lists him as a resident of Rutherford County, and it is the 1820 Census that lists him in Haywood County, North Carolina.14 Enloe bought 250 acres from the Felix Walker grant, and the present - day Oconalufty Visitors Center and Pioneer Farmstead of the GSMNP is located on part of that original purchase. This section of land was 96 V ^ Kj Ky Journeys Through Jackson May - June 2000 / situated mainly between the Western Fork of the Oconalufty River and Raven Fork. Abraham W Enloe, of Scottish descent, was a farmer by trade and marketed his livestock as far away as Augusta, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina.15 Abraham and Sarah Enloe had a total of 14 chUdren; most of the sons settled near their father and mother, while many^ of the daughters married and moved into neighboring counties, such as Buncombe and Macon. The Enloe lands were consolidated by Wesley M. Enloe, the youngest son. He purchased the holdings of his brothers and sisters, and at his death in 1903, the property was divided among his eleven children. Joseph J. Enloe received the tract where the Oconalufty Visitors Center and Pioneer Farmstead is located. This land was sold to the Floyd family in 1915, when Joseph J. moved to Sevier County, Tennessee.17 Hughes Rafe Hughes (b. 1786, d. ,1861) , listed in the 1820 census, his wife Elizabeth (b. 1790, d. 1876), and their children settled on a large tract of land along Raven Fork near what is now Big Cove Road. They supposedly donated the land on which to place a building that would serve as a Methodist Church and a school.18 Beck Around 1805, John and Jane Swearingem Beck moved with Jane's family into the Oconalufty valley. John Beck is listed in the 1820 Census and was a charter member of the Ocona Lufty Baptist Church. He supposedly donated the land for the first log building that served as the church.19 Ky Ky Collins Robert (b. 1806) and Elizabeth Beck Collins settled in the area now known as Collins Creek. They were charter members .of the Ocona-Lufty Baptist Church.20 Robert Collins served as the first tollkeeper of the Oconalufty Turnpike that was completed in 1839. This road ran through the Lufty valley up to Indian Gap and served primarily as a route to transport livestock to market.21 He also served as a guide for Arnold Guyot when he explored the Smoky Mountains in 1859.22 Bradley and Carver These two families, as many of the other families in the Oconalufty valley, were related by marriage. Israel Carver married Mary Bradley, and they lived near their families in the area now known as Smokemont, formerly Bradley Town. Aden Carver, the son of Israel and Mary, became a millwright and moved to Tennessee where he lived for 20 years. He then moved back to the Oconalufty valley and lived on Bradley Fork. He helped build several mills in the valley, including Mingus Mill, built in 1886, for Dr. John Mingus. Aden worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937 to restore the mill. At that time he was 91 years old.23 97 Journeys Through Jackson May - June 2000 Ky Notes 1 Carlos C. Campbell, Birth of a National Park in the Great Smoky Mountains.
