But don't dare get too involved in your spring cleaning and throw away any genealogy. You might need it sometime, and if you don't, then your Society surely will. As we enter this time of renewal, may we all renew our commitment to JCGS. The Society always need your input Speaking of input, investigate in this issue the 1998 activities of our JCGS members. They range from one-line responses, like Clement Pless, to the infectious excitement of Betty Wagner as she describes her serious beginnings in genealogy. All, as usual, are interesting and fun. Also in this issue, read Anne Goodwin's third and final article in response to the Hooper equity suit, see more of Shawna Hall's Owens, and make sure to see Ruth Shuler's beautiful tribute to Irene McClure. All of this reading is easily as worthy of your time as those flower bulbs and fishing poles, don't you agree? Happy hunting to all JCGS members. Irene attended meetings often in the Society's earlier years, but poor health had prevented her being with us recently. She was, however, always willing to share her knowledge of her family's genealogy with anyone who asked, and she made valuable contributions to Jackson County Heritage, Volume 1 and Journeys Through Jackson. For several members of the Society, Irene first became known to us as one of our teachers. Her many years of teaching in the Jackson County school system touched hundreds of lives. She'was the teacher who introduced me to typing, and she led as I foUowed gingerly along the path of Gregg shorthand with its symbols and squiggles. Her influence played a major role as I sought the direction of my life's work; every time I saw her after choosing the secretarial field, she offered encouragement and inspiration. In later years she became a well-loved friend. But Irene had, unknowingly, been an earlier example for me. As a first - grader whose family had just moved to Sylva, I remember seeing Irene come down the street from what was then called Rhodes Cove to the corner beside our house where she awaited her ride to the college in Cullowhee. She was there every school day through the years as she worked toward her teaching degree, and our parents held her up as a model of perseverance and determination. They admired her dedication to her education and taught us to strive for that same goal. I'm not sure I ever told her about mat; I wish I had. To her husband, her children and grandchildren, to her sister Frances Hyatt who is also one of the Society's life members, and to the rest of her family, we offer our deepest sympathy and our condolences. She will be missed. Ruth Shuler Query Bill Hooper of Auburn, WA fWhooper699@aol.com') has information On Hooper, Coward, Brown, and Parker. He seeks dates for Nettie Lovedahl, whose first husband was Baxter R. Hooper. Her father was Lawrence Jiles Lovedahl and her mother was Martha Jane Smith. Nettie remarried to a Wike, but Bill does not know her pertinent dates. 35 Journeys Through Jackson March - April 1999 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m WK ^ Shared by faithful JCGS member Shawna Green Hall, this photograph shows the John Bishop Owen family of the Canada community of Jackson County and neighboring communities in Transylvania County. JCGS member Carol Broom responds to the earlier Hamilton picture (in the Jan.-Feb. issue of JTJ) by identifying the man as Luther Owen, the woman to his right as Mary "Polly" Queen, who married William Lewis Dewey Broom. Davis and Mary Hooper) in Indian Territory in Oklahoma in the 1900 census. The census stated his children, Nettie Lou, b. 1888; B.P., b. 1889; Don Douglas, b. 1892; and John William,b. 1898, all born in North Carolina. (I am still hoping to find where.) Through a death certificate of Don Douglas, my grandfather, the name of his mother is Dellia Dee or Die, also born in NC.. John William Davis is not in the 1880 NC, Jackson County census, at least with his surviving mother i , Mary and his brother Samuel and sister Nancy, so I need to do more looking. Oral tradition says he married three times (to sisters) and the 1900 OK census seems to prove that, at least the number. His last wife was Laura Staton, also born in NC, but I haven't located her family either. In July of 1998 a cousin telephoned me and gave me some information on the John W. Davis, b. 1800, whom I am researching. He said he was in contact with Helen Davis Cooper, another cousin, and that he has been researching land documents. The "W" stands for Whitfield, and he was married to a Sarah Jane. Since I am fairly new to the hunt and I have searched only census records, I am hoping he will send more new information." Sandra Davis Blanton.. .Corralitos, CA New member ...J. Robert Brooks (1521 East Cope Creek Rd. Sylva, NC 28779) researches Brooks, Cole, Monteith " My research was put on hold for several months due to major surgeries late last summer, but I have fully recovered and I am now trying to make up for lost time. I have always been told to work on one family at a time, but I haven't been able to hold myself to that rule. I had so little material to start with, and do not want my children and their families to be left in the same predicament. I have been able to trace my Doane family back seven more generations from 1809 to 1590. The family arrived in Plymouth MA about 1630. I finally went through several very old small leather wallets from the Brown family, bulging with little folded pieces of paper. What I found made me think of the article mat appeared some time ago in JTJ titled "The Turpin Box." This, however, contained more of the Civil War papers of Walter E. Brown, plus a handwritten note which stated 'Lick Creek April 17/63 To all whom it may consura J.H. Mathis of Co. G/62 Rgt NC Troops & E A Brown to accompany him from Midway to the Hospitle at Greenvill Tenn will pass unmolested. A D Hooper Capt' I found a handful of tiny folded' Notes payable 40 Ky Journeys Through Jackson March - April 1999 to E.A. Brown.' Also a paper marked 'Not transferable' and 'Confidential' stating 'This accords the right to Mr. Or Mrs. W.EI Brown to make and use the Laundry and Toilet Magic in his or her own family only' followed by the recipe for the same, with a flourshing signature that I cannot decipher. This was dated 1891. There were property tax receipts from Caney Fork paid by Walter E. Brown from 1866 to 1912, and John Candler Brown Sr. in Caney Fork from 1904 to 1952, Sylva from 1927 to 1952, and Canada Township from 1933-1940. A receipt to 'Watty' (Walter E . ) Brown from J.K.S. Case, MD, East Laporte, NC Nov. 1,1888, and many more. I also have an account book that belonged to David Brown, father of Walter E. and Ezekial A. Brown with dates ranging from 1804,1812, to an entry made by W.E. Brown in 1864. It is very difficult to read, and I need to spend a lot more time trying to transcribe some of this fascinating material.. .1 have found the JCGS website most interesting, and was pleased to see Ezekial A. Brown's Civil War diary included. Many thanks to all of you. Jean Atchley Graham Brown...Englewood, CO " I visited the genealogy library in Fort Wayne, IN, and was favorably impressed with the facility. While there, I secured the names of my husband's 6th great-grandfather's family. I was also able to advance my Briscoe research in aiimited way. I wrote a smaU introduction for our Cemetery Book, and have been very pleased with the book's success. I was privileged to go to the Fort Wayne Ubrary with my sisters in July, and while there, I was able to share vicariously in their success, although my ambition to further 41 Journeys Through Jackson March - April 1999 Norman family lines continues to be frustrated. I was greatly pleased to make the personal acquaintance of Betty Davis Barnard and Elizabeth Moss Wilson and by so doing, watch the Henderson Bryson family become ever more manifest and increasingly complex. I visited some KJ of the usual Ubraries and archival repositories, and sent (and answered) seemingly three million queries on the Internet. At Kirk's request, I wrote a short article on Jackson County migration patterns for our website. The single most satisfying genealogical occurrence of 1998 for me was to write a short one-page opinion piece on Hooper research for JTJ and to see the response it created. My conclusions were wrong, but the dialogue'created by that one page strikes at the very core of what we are doing.. .searching for the truth." Larry Crawford.. .Sylva New Member...Debra L. Last year, a first cousin from Alabama told me this story about our grandfather Daniel O. Dotson (1876-1954). As a result I was able to Ust the ancestors of my 3rd great-grandmother PermeUa Ann Gilbert back 5 more generations to England in the early 1600's and have many facts about several of them. Michael Gilbert Jr. (b. 7 Feb 1642, d. 20 Oct 1691) was a headmaster at Leeds School in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. So my family, was in education way back then. (I am a retired teacher.) Michael and his father Michael Sr. were curates. I also got much information on the Bishops and some on the Berrys. I acquired a letter written by my great-great grandfather just before he died in the Civil i . War which you pubUshed for me. (John Belton Bishop) I also now have a photograph of bis widow Mariah Louisa Berry Bishop when she was an old lady. She was Margaret Hooper Hooper BeU, and had married first a John Hooper who Uved in Tennessee. The Equity Court case, which gave rise to the questions about Margaret's identity, raises further questions about the heirs of Absolem Hooper. Minutes of the .case give two lists, with the first identifying the plaintiffs and defendants in the Equity fight: The Bill of Complaint of Enos Hooper, James Hooper, William Most and wife Elizabeth, Abram Pickelsimer & wife Elenor, Benjamin Chastain and wife Nancy, Absolem Hooper, Mary Brown, John Hooper and wife Margaret, Milton Brown and wife Kisiah, and Jonathan, William, Andrew, Caroline, Sarah, and Mary Hooper children of Andrew Hooper, complainants against William Hooper of the County of Jackson and Isaac Hooper of the State of Georgia defendants. The second list specificaUy names the lineal heirs: ...the said Absolam left your complainants Enos Hooper, James Hooper, Elizabeth Most, Elenor Pickelsimer, Nancy Chastain, Absolam Hooper, Mary Brown, Margaret Hooper, Kisiah Brown and Jonathan, William, Andrew, Caroline, Sarah, & Mary Hooper, children of Andrew Hooper, a son of the said Absolam Hooper, and the defendants William & Isaac Hooper his only children and heirs at law and entitled by law to hold the real estate of the said Absolam by discent [sic] as tenants in common. Part 3 Are there reasonable explanations for the strange inclusions and exclusions to the list of heirs of Absolem Hooper? The court minutes show that Enos Hooper was aUowed to act on behalf of aU the complainants in the case, and that WiUiam Hooper responded on his own behalf and for Isaac Hooper. Since Enos was the active participant bringing the case, he likely was the chief instigator of the action. The other heirs may have concurred with his efforts, but seem not to have suppUed much information to him. For example, this court case identifies Enos Hooper's sister as Elizabeth MOST winle census records consistently use the surname Moss. More complex issues are the 1 Copyright 1998,1999 by Anne C. Hal Hooper, Ron Hooper, and Mary Crocker provided significant contributions of factual material regarding the Hoopers. 49 Journeys Through Jackson March - April 1999 exclusion of John Hooper of Jackson County, inclusion of the deceased Eleanor Hooper Picklesimer, and omission of Andrew Hooper's youngest son. Did the attorneys and the county clerk introduce these problems through sloppiness? Or are there other ways to explain these puzzles? I beheve there are logical reasons for each of the apparent discrepancies. Problem: As was shown in Part 1, a son of John Hooper (b. 15 Mar 1783, Georgia) claimed that Absolem Hooper was father to John. The grandson making that claim clearly had knowledge of family stories about the Revolutionary War soldier. John apparently Uved within Absolem Hooper's 1800 household in South Carolina and from 1820 remained in the same area, now Jackson County, where Absolem Uved. So why did John faU to participate? For that matter, why is John not included in the list of children born to Sarah Salers and Absolem Hooper in the Revolutionary War federal pension file? Possible solutions: The simplest explanation for John's parentage is that he was the eldest child of Absolem, but bad a mother other than Sarah Salers Hooper. Soldier Absolem Hooper Uved in Georgia immediately after the war and married Sarah Salers there, sometime between 1783 and 1787? Testimony obtained for Sarah Salers Hooper's pension application included several mentions of her chUdren. The testimony was necessary to prove the fact of her marriage. Thus, if Absolem had fathered chUdren by another woman, Sarah had no need to mention that situation. In truth, any mention of such offspring would have hindered her case rather titan helped it. As discussed earUer in Part 1, Sarah Salers Hooper declared that she "had twelve chUdren by her aforesaid husband." Other testimony by WUUam Hooper, wherein he identified his older brothers and sisters, specified "the said Absalom & Sarah Hooper had ten chUdren who were born prior to" his own birth. The wording makes clear that the list of children is specific to those bom to Sarah Salers Hooper. In contrast, the biographies (also cited in Part 1) of Lemuel Hooper all mention Absolem Hooper as the paternal grandfather, but make no statement about the paternal grandmother. These clues supply at least two potential explanations for why the Equity case omits John: a. John Hooper was an iUegitimate child of Absolem Hooper and thus not eligible for inheritance through an intestate estate, or b. John Hooper was child of a prior marriage and settlement of his inheritance from his mother (her dower rights) and from Absolem had been made by prior arrangement. Problem: Eleanor Hooper Picklesimer predeceased her father. Several of her chUdren kept versions of family Bible records. They agree that she died on 21 September 1825.3 Furthermore, Haywood County marriage bonds show that Abraham Picklesimer remarried to Mourning Barnes on 10 September 1828. Abraham and Eleanor had at least eight chUdren, seven of whom were alive when the Equity case was filed. AU had obtained their majority and had married several KJ 2 Dates given by Sarah Salers Hooper in her testimony for a widow's pension vary, as her attorney acknowledged in a letter to the pension bureau. 3 Personal correspondence from Neoma Jorgensen, 1129 West 1250 South, St George, UT 84770. KJ^ 50 Journeys Through Jackson March - April 1999 years before the death of their grandfather. Thus, those children, and not Eleanor's remarried widower, would be the expected lineal heirs from Absolem Hooper. Possible solutions: Perhaps an earUer Haywood County estate proceeding for decedent Eleanor Hooper Picklesimer had named Abraham Picklesimer guardian in perpetuity for Eleanor's then-minor heirs. Such a ruling could have made Abraham Picklesimer a legal participant in the 1853/1854 Jackson County ease. A simpler explanation might be that Picklesimer lived nearby (at least in 1850) at Tuckasegee, while his grown chUdren had dispersed over Buncombe, Haywood, and Macon Counties of North Carolina and into Union and Rabun Counties in Georgia. Enos Hooper, who apparently suppUed most of the information for the complainants, probably was uncertain of aU their names and residences. Naming Abraham Picklesimer, as the husband who would be vested in the interests of Eleanor Hooper Picklesimer, would have been much easier than listing aU the chUdren of Eleanor. Problems: The complaint identifies only Jonathan, WUUam, Andrew, Caroline, Sarah, and Mary Hooper as heirs of Andrew Hooper, deceased son of Absolem Hooper, Sf. Andrew Hooper had died in Union County, Georgia in March 1849,4 not long after his father's death in 1845. Two of Andrew's daughters (Caroline and Sarah) were married women by the end of 1843. They and their husbands were Uving in Union County, Georgia near Enos Hooper in 1850. However, the case names these two daughters of Andrew Hooper by their maiden names, ignoring the claims by their husbands in right of the wives. Only Mary, youngest chUd of Andrew Hooper and his wife Dicey, was yet single. But there seems to be another heir. The Union County records show a marriage for Andrew Hooper to Mary CantraU on 2 July 1847. In 1850, a Mary Hooper appears three households from Absalom Hooper (Jr.) in Union County, and shares many of the same neighbors of Andrew Hooper of the 1840 census. Her four daughters bom 1846 or earUer (before the Hooper marriage), and a son John Hooper, age 1, are within Mary Hooper's household. Several Hooper researchers identify this young boy as John Harley Hooper, son of Andrew Hooper and Mary CantraU Hooper. John Harley Hooper was bom either 13 October 1849 or 9 March 18486 and died in 1912. He was buried next to Andrew Hooper. According to one researcher, the two "minor chUdren, Mary 4 See the Bounty Land Warrant file based on Andrew Hooper's War of 1812 service. Month, year, and place of Andrew's death are from testimony by George W. Gillespie, a neighbor, on 2 May 1857. In the same affidavit, Gillespie stated that Andrew's wife Dicie had died in 1847. Andrew's tombstone in Enotah Cemetery, Towns County, Georgia gives years 1792-1849 and lists his service in Captain McClure's Company, North Carolina militia, War of 1812. 5 Although the court minutes refer to Absolem Hooper's death in December 1844, records in the federal pension file for Sarah Salers Hooper date the death to 9 December 1845. The widow first testified to the 1845 date on 14 February 1846, very shortly after the death of her husband. She repeated that date in testimony on 6 February 1851. Jonathan Coward, in pension testimony on 6 October 1848, referred to "the said Absolem's death in 1845." Because these statements were made closer to the actual date of the event, they are more likely to provide the accurate testimony. 6 The October date is from Jerry Taylor's article about Andrew Hooper in Taylor, Jerry A., editor, 1983, Hearthstones of Home • Foundations Of Towns County, Georgia [Volume rj: no publisher, Young Harris [GA], p. 114. The March 1848 date is listed on Harley Hooper's tombstone (which is adjacent to his firmer Andrew's tombstone), as recorded in Brooke, Ted O., 1996, Towns County, Georgia Cemeteries: [the author, 2055 Foster Drive] Cumming [GA 30130- 3549], p. 36. John (age 11) appears on the 1860 census (Towns County) within his uncle Absolem Hooper, Jr.'s home. 51 Journeys Through Jackson March - April 1999 MahaUa7 and John H. Hooper, received Bounty Land Warrant (BLWt) No. 49494 issued June 30, 1857 for his [Andrew's] service in the War of 1812."8 If this researcher is correct about the joint , award of the warrant, then there can be no doubt that John Harley Hooper was a legal heir to bis ^-^ father. Possible solutions: As with the Picklesimer heirs, naming Andrew Hooper's daughters by their maiden names may have been done for simpUcity. Unlike the Picklesimers, there was no surviving parent to represent the interests of each heir. The youngest daughter of Andrew Hooper was Mary, who appears to be the female bom between 1830 and 1835 on Andrew's 1840 Usting in Union County, Georgia. Papers within the BLWt appUcation made on her behalf show that Enos Hooper was made guardian of his niece in November 1852. The BLWt testimony suggests Mary was bom about 1837. Enos Hooper may have wanted the interests of his ward identified separately from those of her siblings. Thus, he would have listed these heirs individuaUy. The reason for the omission of John Harley Hooper is far harder to determine. The strongest argument would be that John Harley was deemed ineUgible to be an heir because he was bom several years after the death of Absolem Hooper. The attorneys may have felt that North Carolina statutes restricted disputes over inheritance to those who were aUve at the time of the creation of the estate. Much weaker would be the argument that Enos Hooper, the chief Utigant, somehow was unaware of John Harley's existence. In 1850, Enos Uved just eight households distant from John Harley Hooper's residence in Union County, Georgia. Or perhaps John Harley Hooper was not a legal heir to Andrew Hooper at all. Some slight evidence supports this contention.9 KJ 7 This combined name probably is a confusion of Mary CantraU Hooper's youngest daughter - shown as Mahala, aged 4 on the 1850 census - with Mary, the youngest daughter of Dicey Hooper. 8 Jerry Taylor, ibid. 9 The BLWt file contains an affidavit made by Enos Hooper on 18 Oct 1855. He claimed "that he is the Lawful Gardian of Mary Hooper aged 18 years the on/y miner heir of Andrew Hooper decease who wasaprivat..." Later in the same document, he repeats the claim in describing his motives, "for the purpose of obtaining the Bounty Land to which he may be Entitled to as Gardan for Mary Hooper the ono* miner heir of Andrew Hooper Deceased ..." Enos Hooper's meaning, however, more likely was that Mary was the only remaining minor heir of parents Andrew and Dicey. Another BLWt affidavit, made in May of 1857 by former neighbors of Andrew Hooper, specified that Mary Hooper was "the youngest and only minor child of said Dicey Hooper and Andrew Hooper.'' In this testimony, the neighbors were silent about the possibility of heirs by another wife.
