  • c o J o u r n e y s T h r o u g h J a c / ( s o n ^ The Official Journal of the Jackson County genealogical Society, Inc. Vol 111, Vto. 6 June, 1993 President's Message I can't believe that half of my year as your president has slipped away. I am still excited about things that are happening to our society. The letters keep coming praising our Jackson County Heritage book. One came recently from Michael McLain in Tequesta, FL. He had been here recently and was able to locate his grandfather Fred N. McLain's barn and to visit his grandparents' graves in Parris Cemetery. He was able to do these things with the help of Wade and Becky Wilson. They must have done a real job with him. The closing sentence in his letter was, "Our visit has really stirred up my desire to b e the first of our McLain clan to return and make Jackson County our home." Our thanks to Wade and Becky for bringing them to my wife, Ruth, for a book. I had a short message and a check for dues from Kirk Stephens. He says, 'You don't know me, but I'd like to join JCGS. Someday I might even attend a meeting. I miss you guys. Life is about to b e better with more time for me." Kirk was one of the key people in the Society before he found himself too busy with work and all that staff. Welcome home, Kirk, come on back any time. In their May publication, the Old Buncombe Genealogical Society says, "We're indebted to Dr. James and Mrs. Barbara Dooley of Western Carolina University for showing the possibilities of tracing our German ancestry back into Germany." We might well a d d our amen to that statement. We have truly enjoyed their presentations at the last two meetings. Barbara is certainly talented as a speaker with James to help her with the slides. Our thanks to both of them. Let's keep in mind the July meeting at the Ramsey Center at Cullowhee. It will be the second Thursday night in July. Please come and bring old pictures that a r e fifty years old or older in which there are people you would like to identify. We plan to invite some oldtimers to .^y help with this. It should b e a real good time. Book sales keep moving along. Family and' class reunions will help to sell enough to pay the" bills and then we can sit on the copies left over. We agree that we would like to keep a few copies on hand. Fran Wood writes from Birmingham to say that he has the book and has found it to be a lot of help in tracing the family of William Hooper, who was said to have signed the Declaration of Independence. This impressed me, but a s I went over the family history, I came upon some friends of mine. Those people are members of the Merritt Hooper family. Merritt operated a store on Caney Fork and later worked for Blackwood Lumber Company. I remember him better after his family moved to Cane Creek below Cullowhee. His son, Claude, was a good friend of mine and was as good a body repair man as we had in the late forties and early fifties. He practically built a Buick for my wife about forty years ago. You could not tell it had been ; damaged. My wife, Ruth, spent many years working alongside Emil at Skyland Textiles. These are the good things that we remember when we read Tackson County Heritage. Don't forget to come to the Ramsey Center in July. Archie CALENDAR Jury 8,7:00 p j a , regular Society meeting at the Ramsey Center Hospitality Room, Cullowhee. KJ V j RESEARCH TIPS C Barbara Dooley has presented two informative and interesting programs on locating unmigrant ancestors, with emphasis on her work in Germany. As a part of the first program, she provided a listing of reference books that are helpful in this kind of search. So all our members may profit from Barbara's expertise, a portion of her list is shown below. For local members, these books may b e found in WCU's Hunter Library.
