The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices for other non-profit groups. From the Editor We finish another outstanding year in JCGS, one marked by extraordinary gifts to the Society on the part of several of our members. Billie Monteith Bryson made a most generous monetary gift, Henry Buchanan donated a new computer, and the family of the late Naomi Hooper Green gave the Society a large s ) number of books and disks from Naomi's research library. We never tire of saying that JCGS members are the best folks in the world. On a light note, Linda Hughes Collins had told us that she would be throwing out the first pitch at a Braves - Yankees game in June. Not only did she do that, but she was the subject of a fine column by Sports Editor John Bednarowski in the July 17 issue of The Marietta Daily Journal. The tongue - in - cheek column stopped short of nominating Linda for the Cy Yonng Award. What fun. In this issue, we are pleased to publish the work of Allen Peterson concerning Judge Riley Cannon. Also, as you contemplate that cranberry salad and roast turkey or goose, have another kind of feast - one for the eyes as you enjoy the submissions of JCGS members Linda Collins, Steve Adams, R.O. Wilson, Bill Hensley, Nita Moses Broom, Jackie Justice McDonald, Barbara Shelton Smith, Betty Queen Monteith, Dorris Dills Beck, Travis Justin Monteith, Jason Gregory, and Linda Maxwell - Fisher. In all, some fourteen of your Society members contributed in some way to this issue. We are thankful for all. We are also thankful for a million other things in this holiday season, and family is right up there among the most important However you believe and however you celebrate, may rich blessings be yours. An ad hoc committee is to decide the guidelines for use of the new materials. In Memoriam We were saddened to learn of the deaths of two longtime members of JCGS. Louise Hyatt Edwards was an institution in the Qualla community, where she was a teacher for many years. Walter Hall was once president of the Old Buncombe Society, but he and his wife Roberta would also visit with us frequently. Our sympathy to their families. We also offer our condolences to Lavine Callicott, Beau Hudgins, and Marie Treadway, all of whom have recently faced losses. C a n n on o f J a c k s o n C o u n t y , N o r t h C a r o l i na By Allen R. Peterson, CG A birth date and birthplace is available, but the identity of the parents is unknown. Researching those with the same surname in a nearby county provides clues to the parent's identity. Records that specify the parents of an ancestor often do not exist, even when an accurate birth date and birthplace is available. Correlation of genealogical records for those with the same surname living in different counties may provide evidence for parental relationships. Riley H. Cannon was born in 1822 in Buncombe County, North Carolina. He died in Jackson County, North Carolina in 1886. While no known source verifies Riley's parents, indirect evidence from Buncombe and Jackson Counties provides likely candidates. Buncombe County is situated in western North Carolina and was formed in 1791 from parts of Burke and Rutherford Counties. In 1808 the western part of Buncombe County became Haywood County. Jackson County was formed in 1851 from parts of Haywood and Macon Counties. RILEY H. CANNON R. H. Cannon's obituary states that he was born on 26 March 1822 in Buncombe County," North Carolina. He attended Sandhill Academy1 in the Lower Hominy Valley southwest of Asheville. In the 1840s Riley Cannon taught at Sandhill.2 Riley Cannon was a member of Company K of the Buncombe County Volunteers that participated in the removal of the Indians from North Carolina in 1838.3 During the academic years of 1839-1840 and 1840-1841, Riley was enrolled at Emory and Henry College, Virginia, where he gave his home address as Sulphur Springs, North Carolina.4 © Allen R. The archivist wrote, "Unfortunately, a fire in 1928 destroyed our main building and a majority of our 19* century records. But from the college catalogs I can confirm that Riley H. Cannon was enrolled at Emory & Henry for the 1839-40 academic year (that year in the catalog he listed his hometown as Sulphur Springs, N.C.) and for the 1840-41 academic year (that year in the catalog he listed his hometown as Buncombe County, N.C). During the first several years of its existence Emory & Henry College did not classify students by class years, so I cannot tell from the catalogs if he was classified as a freshman when he arrived. Sadly, the catalogs do not include names of parents. His name disappears from the catalogs after the 1840-41 academic year." 151 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2009 The present-day community of Sulphur Springs is located on the west side of Asheville in ""*' Buncombe County. On 16 February 1858, R. H. Cannon paid seven hundred dollars to David Ballard for two tracts of land encompassing one hundred and fifty acres at the headwaters of Reems Creek in Buncombe.18 In the same year the state of North Carolina granted to R. H. Cannon and R. H. Ballard thirty acres of land situated on the west side of the French Broad River for the sum of twelve and one-half cents per acre. The grant was made on 28 December 1858.19 R. H. Riley had no personal property; his land had been sold on 22 September 1897 for forty-six dollars. B. F. Burnside was reimbursed thirteen dollars and seventy-five cents, which he had spent for Riley's burial expenses. Administration charges, including a land survey and court costs, amounted to forty-six dollars and twenty-five cents.30 In 1835, when Riley would have been about thirteen years old, Simeon Cannon from "Homoney" in Buncombe County was listed as a congressional voter.31 Were Simeon and Riley related? Simmons real estate was worth one hundred dollars in 1870.37- Simeon Cannon was living in Lower Hominy in 1880 and was identified as an eighty-nine-year- old father of Patsy Seary, who was born about 1830. Patsy Seary reported that her father was b om in South Carolina. Her sister, Aveline Cannon, reported that Simeon was b om North Carolina. Also, Patsy Seary indicated that she was born in North Carolina, but her son, Boyd, reported that his mother was b om in South Carolina.38 A burial record or obituary could not be located for either Sim or Abi. Tide deeds or probate could not be found for Sim Cannon. Other individuals are identified as living in the home of Sim Cannon in 1830 and 1840 in Buncombe. Some of them may have been his children. ELIZABETH CANNON A bastardy bond filed in Buncombe in October 1838 names Elizabeth Cannon as the mother of an illegitimate child. Bondsmen were John Ingle and Absalum Garrer.39 In 1860 Elizabeth Cannon was a farmer living in Sulphur Springs with real estate valued at one hundred dollars. She was the head of a household living two doors from Simeon Cannon and was born about '32. No husband was named. Living with her in 1860 was Saphronia, who was a twenty-three-year-old female, born in North Carolina.40 Saphronia may have been the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Cannon named in the 1838 bastardy bond. In 1870 Betsey Cannon bom about 1820 was living in the home of John Alexander in Asheville. Her occupation was house keeping, and her real estate was worth one hundred dollars. With her was Saphrona born about 1840.41 Saphrona is probably the same Saphronia living with Elizabeth ten years earlier. On 29 March 1858 A. E. Penland granted to Elizabeth Cannon a parcel of land containing eighteen acres that adjoined Charley Moore's land on the waters of Hominy [Creek] for the sum of eighteen dollars. The deed was witnessed by James Cannon.42 James Cannon may have been Elizabeth's brother. Later, on 12 August 1872, Elizabeth Cannon granted to E. H. Green a parcel of land joining Charley Moore's land on the waters of Hominy Creek. She received one hundred dollars from E. H. Green.43 This land may have been the real estate valued at one hundred dollars in 1870. Elizabeth Cannon may have been the female that was between fifteen and nineteen in the household of Simmons Cannon in 1830 in Buncombe. Likewise, she may have been the female that was between twenty and twenty-nine in the home of Sim Cannon in 1840. WILLIAM H. CANNON William H. Cannon was a member of Company K of the Buncombe County Volunteers that participated in the removal of the Indians from North Carolina in 1838.44 Eight years later in February 1846, W. H. Cannon was named as a bondsman for the unwed mother, Adaline Cannon. The other bondsman was Nancy Adline Cannon.45 In 1850 William H. Cannon worked a laborer in Buncombe. The census indicates that he was bom about 1817 in North Carolina. Living with him was Hannah b om about 1824 in North Carolina.46 W. H. Cannon bom about 1815 in North Carolina lived in Sulphur Springs in I860, and his real estate was valued at two hundred and sixty-six dollars. Hannah, who was bom about 1823 in North Carolina, was still living with him in I860.47 William H. Cannon whose middle name may have been Hamilton was living in "Hominey" in 1870. He was born about 1817 in North Carolina and was a wagon maker with real estate 40. 1860 U.S. census, Sulphur Springs, Buncombe County, North Carolina, pop. sch., page 104, dwelling 686, family 672, Elizabeth Cannon household 41. 1870 U.S. census, Asheville, Buncombe County, North Carolina, population schedule, page 52, dwelling 339, family 343, John Alexander household; digital image, Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com : accessed 29 August 2007), citing NARA microfilm M593, roll 1125. 42. Hannah Cannon again appears in this home. She -~"v was b om about 1822 in North Carolina.48 Hamilton Cannon was a sixty-four-year-old farmer v—' born in North Carolina and living in Lower Hominey in 1880. His wife was Hannah Cannon bom about 1820 in North Carolina.49 Like R. H. Cannon, W. H. Cannon received a grant from the state of North Carolina in 1858. On 28 July 1858, he was granted twenty-five acres on the waters of Hominy Springs on the west side of the French Broad River.50 William H. Cannon may have been Riley Cannon's older brother. William would have been about thirteen when the 1830 Buncombe census was taken and twenty-one when the Indians were removed in 1838. He may have been the male between the age of twenty and twenty-nine living in the home of Sim Cannon in 1840. JAMES CANNON In 1850 James Cannon and his family were living next door to Simmons Cannon in Buncombe. James was a laborer b om about 1825. Living with him was Nancy born about 1822. Both were born in North Carolina.51 Since James Cannon lived next door to Simmons Cannon in 1850, he may have been related to Simmons, possibly as a son. James Cannon bom in 1827 was living in Sulphur Springs in 1860 with Nancy born in 1825. His real estate was worth two hundred dollars.52 In 1870 James Cannon was again living in Sulphur Springs with Nancy, where he was a fifty-year-old farmer and Nancy was fifty-one. His real estate was still valued at two hundred dollars.53 James Cannon bom about 1824 was living with his wife, Nancy, in Lower Hominy in 1880.54 James Cannon died intestate in April 1897. D. M. Luther administered his estate on behalf of the state of North Carolina. On 18 October 1897 the sheriff of Buncombe County summoned James Cannon's heirs: Matilda Cannon, age fifty-three; Hannah Cannon, age about forty; Wiley '-^J Cannon, age about thirty-eight and his wife Annie; B. F. Burnside and his wife Julia Burnside, age about thirty-five; and Jackson Benson and his wife Emma, age about thirty. James Cannon's personal effects were valued at two dollars and were not enough to cover his debts appraised at twenty-seven dollars. James owned land in Buncombe County that was worth sixty dollars, and it was sold to B. F. Burnside for forty-six dollars to pay James's debts.55 48. 1870 U.S. census, Hominy, Buncombe County, North Carolina, population schedule, page 18, dwelling 117, family 117, Hamilton Cannon household; digital image, Ancestry.com (http://ancestry.com : accessed 5 May 2009), citing NARA microfilm M593, roll 1125. 49. 1880 U.S. census, Lower Hominy, Buncombe County, North Carolina, population schedule, enumeration district 27, page 12, dwelling 119, family 119, Hamilton Cannon household; digital image, Ancestry.com (http://ancestry.com : accessed 5 May 2009), citing NARA microfilm T9, roll 954. 50. F. Burnside may have been the same individual that paid Riley Cannon's burial expenses. James Cannon may have been the male between zero and four in the household of Simmons Cannon in 1830. He may be the male between ten and fourteen in 1840. HENRY C. CANNON In 1850 Buncombe County, Henry C. Cannon was a six-year-old living in the home of Simmons Cannon.56 Ten years later Henry Cannon was sixteen and living in the home of Simeon Cannon in Sulphur Springs, where he was further identified as Simeon's grandchild.57 Henry's parents remain unknown. Military records reveal that an eighteen-year-old Henry C. Cannon from Buncombe County enlisted as a Private with the Confederate forces on 15 May 1862 as part of Company K with the North Carolina Sixtieth Infantry Regiment.58 His age of eighteen in 1862 places his birth year in about 1844, which fits the approximate birth years calculated for him from the 1850 and 1860 census records. Henry C. Cannon could not be located in the 1870 census in Buncombe. Instead, an H. C. Cannon appears in the household of E. R. Hampton in Webster, Jackson County, where he was identified as a twenty-seven-year-old "Deputy U S Marshall."59 E. R. Hampton was recognized as a twenty-four-year-old lawyer Uving with R. E. Hampton, a sixteen-year-old female.60 E. R. Hampton is undoubtedly Erastus Rowley Hampton, and R. E. Hampton is his wife, Rachel Evelyn Cannon b om in December 1853 to Riley H. Cannon.61 She would have been sixteen years old when the census was enumerated in August 1870.62 See Table 1. Henry Calhoun Cannon married R. Amanda Allison in 1871.^ H. C. Cannon was buried in 1901 in the Webster Cemetery. His monumental inscription reveals that he was born on 1 June 1844 and died on 19 August 1901. Amanda Cannon, "the wife of H. C. Cannon," was also buried in the Webster Cemetery. She was b om on 2 January 1850 and died on 12 June 1925.64 It is possible that H. C. Cannon, named in the 1870 Jackson County census, is the same individual named Henry Cannon identified as a sixteen-year-old grandson of Simeon Cannon in 1860 Buncombe County. H. C. Cannon identified in 1870 Webster may have been Rachel (Cannon) Hampton's cousin and, hence, Riley Cannon's nephew. 56. 1850 U.S. census, Buncombe County, North Carolina, pop. sch., page 252, dwelling 770, family 770, Simmons Cannon household. 57. 1860 U.S. census, Sulphur Springs, Buncombe County, North Carolina, pop. sch., page 104, dwelling 684, family 670, Simeon Cannon household. 58. With few exceptions, most nineteenth-century census records naming Sim a n d Abi designate their birthplace as South Carolina. Due to boundary disputes between Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina prior to the Walton War in December 1810,65 Sim a n d Abi Cannon could have actually been born in what was considered to have been South Carolina at the time. If Riley Cannon was enrolled in Emory and Henry College in 1840, then was h e the individual born between 1820 and 1825, as recorded in the home of Sim Cannon in 1840 Buncombe? Riley may have taken leave from school to help his father on the farm when the 1840 census was taken. Elizabeth Cannon may have been Sim Cannon's sister. If Elizabeth were born about 1812 to Sim and Abi Cannon, then Abi would have been between the ages of twelve and fourteen when Elizabeth was born. CONCLUSIONS Records from two North Carolina counties provide convincing evidence that R. H. Cannon's parents were Sim and Abi Cannon from Sulphur Springs or Lower Hominy Township in Buncombe County: • Sim Cannon born in the 1790s was the only Cannon male living in Buncombe County who was old enough to have been Riley's father when Riley was born in 1822. • Riley attended Sandhill Academy near Sulphur Springs, where Sim lived. • Riley attended Emory and Henry College in Virginia from 1839 to 1841, where he listed his home address as Sulphur Springs. • A male of Riley's age lived in the home of Sim Cannon in Buncombe County in 1830 and 1840. • Riley and his suspected brother, William H. Cannon, were members of the Buncombe County Volunteers that took part in the removal of the Indians from North Carolina in 1838. • Riley was a tutor living near Simmons Cannon in 1850 Buncombe. • As a young man, Riley owned land along the French Broad River near Lower Hominy. Riley's suspected siblings, Elizabeth, William H., and James were of an age to have lived in the home of Sim Cannon in Buncombe County in 1830 and 1840. These individuals were later recorded as having lived and owned land in Lower Hominy near Riley's land on the French Broad River. • Riley married a woman from Gash's Creek in Buncombe County. • Riley had a daughter with the middle name Abi. She may have been named after her grandmother, Abi, the wife of Sim Cannon. • Henry C. Cannon lived with his grandparents, Simeon and Abi Cannon, in 1860 Sulphur Springs. H. C. Cannon lived with his alleged cousin, R. E. (Cannon) Hampton in 1870 Webster implying that Henry C. was Riley Cannon's nephew and that Riley was Simeon and Abi Camion's son. • In 1897 James Cannon's son-in-law, B. F. Burnside, was party to a lawsuit between the state of North Carolina and James Cannon's heirs, where he ultimately purchased James's land to pay James's debts. Earlier, B. F. Burnside had paid the burial expenses for Riley Cannon. Julia Burnside, who was B. F. Burnside's wife, was probably Riley's niece. Riley was likely James's brother. 65. We nosed around in the JCGS office to see what other Massingale materials we could find. In the family files are some pages copied from Massengills, Massingales, & Variants (Samuel Massengill, 1931). We are not sure who copied these pages and gave them to us. JCGS member Steve Adams? Tim and Sandie Massingale assert in Jackson County Heritage, Vol II, that Daniel Massingale, father of James Calvin Massingale, was a son of Dread Massingale and his third wife Jane Parker.] [Dread Massingale (b. ca. 1806) m. Deborah Nicholson in Rabun County GA 21 Mar 1825. This couple would be the parents of Robert Massingale, who lived on Glady Creek in the Canada section of Jackson County. Dread married Jane Parker in Jackson County in December 1856. Daniel Massingale reported in the 1900 Jackson County census that he was born in 1857. (He is also shown as age 3 in the 1860 census.) Apparently the two Massingale families of the area descend from half- brothers.] [In 1900, Daniel Massingale stated to the census taker that he was born in North Carolina, to a South Carolina - born father and a North Carolina - born mother. He is a farmer, unable to read and write, who owns his own farm free of mortgage. His wife Sarrah J. was born in August of 1862 (NC, to both parents born in SC), and she has borne 10 children, 7 """ of whom are living. Six of these children are at home (James Calvin was already married - '^-^ see above), and are listed as Joseph (Mar. of 1885), Laura E. (July of 1888), Bettie Jane (September of 1886), Dread (March of 1890), Florence (January of 1895), and Denton (February of 1897). Also shown in the home is Deborah Mull, a divorced woman with 2 j children. She would be Daniel's niece, a daughter of Robert.] [Jackson County marriages show that Daniel Massingale married Sarah Adams 24 Dec 1877 at E.W. Fortner's, Jackson County.] [In the aforementioned pages found in the family files, the author gives Daniel as a son of Dread, this Dread a son of a Dread Sr. and his wife Esther Blackman, Dread Sr. a son of George Massingill of Johnston County NC, who "Settled in Pendleton District, SC..." George in turn appears to be a son of James Massengill of Nash County, NC] [The same author gives incomplete marriage data for the children. We will add this with the family picture that accompanies this article.] ' v^ 164 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2009 ZJrsa&fe,- b^ 3/jS9o Abo shared by Nita, the persons pictured above are the children of Daniel and Sarah Adams Massingale. We believe this picture to be taken in a cemetery, and we can see cars in the background that make us think that this might be a picture from the 1930's. According to the Massengill pages that we have already quoted, Laura married a Suddeth, Bettie Jane married Bill Alexander, Dreadie married Essie Nicholson, Florence married a Reece. The marriages for the three men are not listed, but we have given the Calvin information above. Except for Calvin, we do not know where the other children in this family made their homes. 165 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2009 ^J This is a picture of Daniel and Sarah Adams Massingale. Some sources give his death date as 1898, but he was still living when the 1900 census was taken. Betty descends from the Franklins and the Higdons, and her cither - in - law Hugh Monteith practiced law here, thus the other papers.] [The first item is a reprint of a paper from the Franklin reunion of 2003. It was of special interest to the editor because of Ruth Cansada Norman Franklin's maiden name. She was a first cousin to the editor's maternal grandfather, and a half - sister to the W.D. Parris featured in our issue of Summer 2005. Ruth Cansada Norman Franklin married Joseph C. McClure after George Franklin's death. She lived and died in the Swannanoa area.] In 2002; Robert Wayne Franklin and his family were welcomed for the first time to the annual Franklin Reunion. Robert is the grandson of George Franklin, older brother to Thomas Fanning Franklin whose descendants began the annual event. Robert Franklin's family brings together more of the Franklin Family and unites descendants of Thomas Franklin (1804-1891) and Jemina Higdon (1809-1892), parents of David Nelson Franklin (1832-1914) who with his wife Sarah A. Evens (1835-1920) were parents to both George Franklin (1869-1913) and Thomas F. Franklin (1871-1943). Robert Wayne Franklin's family presence echos the Franklin fortitude within the family epic. His grandfather, George Franklin, was married to Ruth Cansada Norman (1875-7). Together they had six children: Arthur W. Franklin (1895-?), Russell D. Franklin (1899-7), Belle Rosa Franklin (1900-7), George T. Franklin (1903-1970), May A. Franklin (1905-7), and Edna M. Franklin (1907-7). George worked explosives for Pigeon River Railroad (later the T&NC Railroad) operated by Champion Lumber Company for Whitmer Interests (later Suncrest Lumber Company) at the original Sunburst location. In 1913, George was involved in the construction of two incline railways. On August 12, George, along with his fellow worker, Jim Gaddy, were responsible for planting dynamite in three holes to clear obstacles for the construction of the Middle Prong operation. According to the 8/15/13 Waynesville Courier (now the Waynesville Mountaineer): "All the workmen had gone to supper except Franklin and Gaddy who staid behind to shoot the blasts. At the supper shanty it was noted that the blasts did not go off together and when the two men failed to show up some of the men went to investigate" (Pg. 1, Col. 5). The men discovered that Franklin and Gaddy had been killed instantly in what the Courier reported was the "untimely explosion of a charge of dynamite which the two men had planted for blasting ..." and "... it is supposed that a charge was delayed and that the men went to investigate just as it went off." George's son, Will, identified his remains. Gaddy was not identified until the following morning. Georgfc Franklin's remains were laid to rest at the Lake Logan andBurnett Siding Cemetery in Haywood County. He was approximately forty-three years of age at the time of this death. Although Sunburst no longer exists as a logging community and the railroad has been dismantled, the legacy of the Blue Ridge Paper Company is a tribute to George Franklin's sacrifice. At the turn of the twentieth century, widows had limited options. The work force did not include women. This would only occur in limited exception and by necessity such as during World War II. Also, insurance was not available to provide for a family with Hie loss of the husband and father. So with the death of George Franklin, whose salary was probably twenty-five cents an hour prohibiting any savings or investments, his wife, Ruth, faced an uncertain future for herself and had limited options for her children. The older children who could survive on their own did so by finding employmcnt-a choice reserved for the boys. The girls, if old enough, could find security in marriage. This was the plight for at least Arthur W. and Belle Rosa. The other children were placed in orphanages. Because of this, the historical records for Ruth Franklin and many of her and George's children have been lost. Robert Wayne Franklin (10/7/34) is aware of his historical roots because his father, George T. Franklin, kept the story alive concerning his father and hjs experiences. George T. Franklin left the orphanage eventually serving for seven years in the U.S. navy. He returned to the mountains of North Carolina, but when he discovered that his son Robert had polio, he relocated his family to Charlotte so his son could get medical attention. George T. Franklin died in Ritley, California in 1970. Robert is married to Nancy C. Thomas (5/19/32). He has four children: Robert Wayne Franklin Jr. (5/19/59); Joyce Anne Franklin (7/1/60); Anita Lyntz(11/23/62); and George Andrew Franklin (12/6/64). Their story is a witness to the strength of the Franklin family. 173 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2009 [The second item is a Higdon fgr. Thomas Jackson Monteith, one of the sons of Thomas Smith Monteith and Harriett McClure. The picture on the right is unidentified, but we wonder if this might possibly be Thomas Smith Monteith. We have for many years been privileged to know and be friends with T.S. Monteith descendants, persons who grew up in the Marion, North Carolina area. But to our knowledge, this is the first time we have seen a photograph that might be T.S. His children and those of his brother S.A. Monteith were double first cousins. JCGS President James Monteith is, of course, an S.A. descendant, as are other members of the Society. If one will notice the ancestry charts, Nancy B. Crawford Monteith figures prominently into this family. All of the circumstantial evidence points to her being a daughter of Samuel and Mary Briscoe Crawford. 183 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2009 T7T-537 ^ Above, the gravestone of Margaret Bradshaw Monteith, first wife of Rev. [Ed. Poison gas was used by both sides, as were tanks, machine guns, submarines, and very early airplanes. All were (more or less) innovations in warfare, and all had a part in the evolution of war from a gentlemanly exercise to total destruction of an enemy and his home. The trenches were especially bad...filthy and infested, with no-man's-land a few hundred yards between one's own trench and that of his enemy. Going "over the top" meant certain death for a number of the attackers, with possibly only a few feet gained in the process. Small wonder that All Quiet on the Western Front became such a classic.) 189 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2009 O n e T h i n g a n d A n o t h e r ^y J A C K S O N C O U N T Y A N C E S T RY New on-line Yahoo group will assist researchers of family history by providing a totally free and open forum where you may post your queries and receive replies, share your information and pictures, gain new insight into your family lines, and learn research techniques from other on-line members. This forum will focus on Jackson County and the families who settled in Jackson County. While the primary focus will be Jackson County, the forum will also accept those interested in Macon County, since Macon was the earlier county for Jackson and (part of) Transylvania Counties. The Jackson County Ancestry forum members will be required to post briefly a "New Member Introduction" with their family lines or surnames so that others may view those lines to determine whether they are connected. The more information you share, the more information you will receive. Members may access the on-line messages any time. There are also two avenues for the forum to send you daily information. One is through individual messages every time one is posted. The other is a daily digest which lists just the messages that were posted that day. It is recommended that you receive the daily digest rather than the individual e-mails. There will also be folders where pictures may be posted and would be downloadable by others. Everyone is welcome to join this exciting new forum while we all work on the quest for knowledge of our family lines and where these families lived.
