From the Editor We attempt, in this issue, to begin to catch up from our days of illness and getting further and further behind. We tried to explain why our first issue for this year was so poor, and we hope that the membership would be empathic with our faults. But on with the show. We would hope that persons might pick up some assistance with methodology in our Carson article running this time. While these folks are ever-so-slightly related to the editor, they are much closer kin to several of our other members. We were especiaUy pleased to receive the Davis book from Ann Melton, and we believe you will agree that our pictures this time are outstanding. As usual, we try to include some vital statistics and official records to these pages, as well as pure genealogy and whatever features might come our way. Enjoy it, learn from it, and react to it, especially when you see mistakes that need corrections. We Dedicate this Issue To The Memory of Roy Shuler "I cannot say, and I will not say That he is dead. He is just away." These words of James Whitcomb Riley are true of our good friend, Roy Shuler. Roy was born and grew up in Dillsboro and was educated in the Jackson County schools and at King's College in Charlotte. He was married to Ruth Crawford, who was a real helpmate to him. Roy was involved in a variety of community activities and always supported the children in their activities. He loved music and often sang with different groups. He served as Chief of the Cullowhee Fire Department for eight years, was an elder and trustee of CuUowhee Presbyterian Church, and was a long-time member of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. He served the Society as Vice - President for three years, during which time he worked diligently to arrange interesting and informative programs. Roy always had a smile and a friendly greeting for everyone, and quite often he entertained us with a funny story. After his retirement as a purchasing agent for Western Carolina University, he and Ruth were able to do some of the traveling they had longed to do. They were always attempting to track down more ancestors. After a battle with myeloma, on April 10, Roy joined the heavenly choir, and we can be assured that he is now singing with the angels. Roy will be missed by all of us who knew him. We regret that the older gentlemen needed to wear their hats, but we also understand the propriety of that practice. Thomas Worth and Martha Jane Bailey Cochran were the great-grandparents of Roy Shuler, and are the great-great grandparents of JCGS member Kim Shuler. This is the editor's own work. Appropriate credits are found in the text.] We weYe looking through some notebooks one day when we were reminded that we didn't know what ever happened to Elias Carson. That might not seem to be a matter of great consequence to most of the world's population, but since he was one of many first cousins four times removed, this represented a gap in genealogical knowledge. Elias was listed in the 1850 Haywood County, NC, census as follows: FamUy #1130 Elias Carson 24 Farmer NC Sarah Ann 23 NC Thaddeus D. 2 NC Judson 11 mos. NC According to James and Vivian Woolley's compilation of the marriage bonds of Haywood and Jackson counties, a bond for the marriage of Elias Carson and "Sary Ann" Beaty was issued in Haywood County 21 Oct 1846. Given the inconsistencies of spelling, we can see that Elias married Sarah Ann Beatty. Who were these young people? Elias was a son of William and Lydia Crawford Carson, and is named in William's 1862 will. He had several siblings, and two of those - James Terrell Carson and Mary Catherine Carson Queen - have well-documented families. Sarah Ann Beatty Carson was most likely a daughter of Walter and Martha Beatty, whose family is enumerated just prior to Elias and Sarah Ann in 1850 Haywood. As we have done many times, we asked Ruth Shuler to .-use the various online genealogical resources at her disposal to locate Elias and his family. One of the best-known of these online companies is Ancestry.com, which offers among its many features a Family Tree section called One World Tree, where subscribers can list family data. Fortunately for us, Ruth was able to find a list in this location. This named Elias and Sarah, gave their vital dates, and listed their children with birth dates. Elias Carson Born 8 Jun 1925 Jackson NC Died 29 Mar 1874 Knox TN Sarah "Batey" Born 24 Oct 1827 Jackson NC Died 29 J an 1884 Knox TN Children Birth Thaddeus Carson 20 Mar 1848 Judson Carson 4 Aug 1849 (Female) Carson 7 Feb 1851 Lydia Carson 18 May 1853 Jackson NC Martha Carson 7 May 1855 Rufus Carson 18 J a n 1857 Ellen Carson 13 Jan 1859 Elias Carson. 21 Jul 1861 55 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2006 Irona Carson 28 Sep 1865 Ira Carson 20 Nov 1867 Sarah Catherine Carson 6 Jul 1871 V_/ The researcher can conclude that this information came from a family Bible or comparable list because of the specific dates. Considering that the daughter Lydia also has a place of birth listed, one may surmise that the person who submitted the data was a descendant of this Lydia, a conclusion we will explore in more detail later. Of the children listed above for Elias and Sarah, Ruth was able to find further data on four, namely Judson, Lydia, Rufus, and Ira. The oldest son, Thaddeus, does not appear after 1870. The third child, a daughter not named in the list above, apparently died as an infant. Martha, Ellen, Irona, and Sarah Catherine will probably have married names. Elias (the son) also is not yet in evidence. The others we will eventually discuss in age order. First, however, consider that Ruth also subscribes to an online service which offers all census records for the United States. In the 1870 census for Knox County, Tennessee, we find the following on page 261: Elias Carson Sarah Thaddeus Judson Lydia Martha Rufus Ellen Elias Irona Ira 45 43 21 20 17 15 13 11 8 4 2 Wagon Maker Keeping House Farmer Farmer At School At School (born) NC NC NC NC NC NC NC NC NC TN TN ^J By studying this information, we can conclude that this family was in North Carolina as late as 1862. We do not find them listed in 1860 in Haywood or Jackson Counties, but we have not consulted an 1860 census index to see if they are elsewhere in North Carolina. (Some families in Jackson County were omitted from the 1860 census.) By 1880, this family would be very different in its makeup. As we know already, Sarah was a widow in 1874, and she is shown in the 1880 Sevier County, Tennessee census on page 435: Sarah Carson 45 W NCNCNC Elias 17 TNNCNC Irena 15 TN NC NC Sarah 8 TN NC NC We believe the numbers in Sarah's age to be backward, since by this time she would have been 54 or so. Also, only three of the youngest children are at home. Since we find no mention of the oldest son Thaddeus after 1870, we will begin our discussion with the second son Judson, who was living in Blount County, Tennessee in 1880: Judson Carson 30 Wagon Maker NCNCNC MaryE. 25 Keeping House TNTNTN v_> 56 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2006 ^ Sarah Ira 1 Daughter TN NC TN 12 Brother at School TN NC NC Since there .is no 1890 census to research, we go forward to 1900, when we find Judson and Mary in Texas, Fannin County: Judson Carson Mary A. Anna WiUiam 50 46 16 13 Farmer 3 of 4 living At School Farm laborer NC NC NC TNTNTN TNTNTN KSTNTN From studying this census entry, we can tell two things. Either the daughter Sarah or another child had died, and secondly, that this family Jived in Kansas when the son William was born. But by 1910, this family had moved again and is shown in Curry County, New Mexico. Judson Carson 60 Farmer MaryE. 55 1 of 4 living NC US US TNTNTN Notice that only one of their four children is still living. By 1920, the family has moved yet again, and is living in Crawford County, Arkansas. Judson Carson 70 Mary E. 65 Fanner NC NC NC TNTNTN Judson and his wife, according to another of the online sources, actually died in Blount County, Tennessee. Judson Carson 1 Aug 1849 5 Mar 1925 Mary Ellen Howard Carson 16 Jan 1854 2 Apr 1925 The second child of Elias and Sarah whom we can track with certainty is Lydia. We had mentioned earlier that we believed the submitter to the One World Tree .was a Lydia descendant. That idea seems to be borne out by the existence of another Tree page just for Lydia. This page shows Lydia's birth date and gives her death date as 11 Mar 1935 in Grainger County, Tennessee in a community called Shilo or Shiloh. (Researchers should not confuse this locality with the Civil War battle field of that name, since the latter is located in western Tennessee near the Mississippi state line. Grainger is the county just north of Knox in the east.) Lydia's husband Robert Hood, whom she married 10 Nov 1872 in Grainger County, was born 8 Aug 1849 in Knox and died 4 Feb 1922 in Grainger. According to the Tree page, they were the parents of nine children as follows: C Thomas Elias Hood Martha Jane Hood William Lindsey Hood Mary EUen Hood James Robert Hood Sarah Elizabeth Hood Irene Hood Francis Gilbert Hood Gib Ellis Hood 26 Jul 1874 16 Mar 1876 7 May 1878 lODec 1879 17 Apr 1882 4 Jan 1884 1 Sep 1886 21 Oct 1889 6 may 1892 Grainger, TN Grainger, TN Grainger, TN Grainger, TN Seymour in Sevier, TN Sevier, TN 57 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2006 This family is shown in the 1880 census on the same page (Trundles Cross Roads) in j Sevier County as her mother Sarah Carson and her brother Rufus. More information is given at this site about the children of Lydia Carson Hood, and we will now consider those children in order. Thomas Elias Hood died 6 Sep 1948 in Blount County. He had married Mary Ellen White, who was born 1 Nov 1872 and died 5 Mar 1932 in Blount. Six children (William, Marvin Elias, Lois Ozella, Floyd, Ina, and Minnie Mae) are shown on the Tree page. Martha Jane Hood died 14 May 1899. She was married to Brad White. William Lindsey Hood died 5 Mar 1962. He was married to Elizabeth Hodges, who was born 4 Mar 1878 and died 21 Jun 1935. Mary Ellen Hood died 8 Mar 1961 in Littleton, Arapahoe County, Colorado. She had married 29 Nov 1900 Alfred Franklin Bishop in Grainger County. He was born 6 Mar 1883 and died 15 Mar 1959 in Littleton. Their children (surname Bishop) were Fred Leroy, James Benjamin, Neva Bell, Alfred Thomas, Audrey Ella, Hazel Irene, Lenard Franklin, and William Robert. James Robert Hood died 25 Dec 1959. He was married to SteUa M. Hines, who was born 1 Jan 1886 in Seymour and died 12 Jul 1955 in Knoxville. Their children were Clarence, James Leonard, Daley Kermit, Lydia Mabel, and Mary Pauline. Sarah Elizabeth Hood married John Pink Thomas, who was born 16 Apr 1895. Their i children (surname Thomas) were Pershing Pink, Irene Carson, and Mary Lou. Irene Hood died unmarried 24 May 1905. The Sevier County Library's KJ main branch is located in downtown Sevierville, and we were able to meet the friendly staff of the genealogical annex. We first looked for marriages of the children of Elias and Sarah Carson. Our source for this was a book entitled Marriages of the Mountains: Sevier County TN 1856 - 1914, published by the Sevier County Genealogical Society. We were able to find marriages for six children: Martha Carson m. James B. Robinson 20 Oct 1874 Rufus Carson m. Sarah Garner 28 Jan 1878 Judson Carson m. M.E. Howard 14 Jul 1878 Ira Carson m. Elizabeth Garner 26 Feb 1886 Ellis Carson m. Lizzie Ann Jenkins 24 Oct 1889 Sarah Carson m. James A. Jenkins 15 Feb 1891 One thing that immediately stands out in this list is that the son we were calling "Elias" has become "Ellis." In fact, his daughter Letha is also listed in the marriages, she having married Arlie Huskey 17 Jun 1911. One other Carson marriage is listed - Ellis Carson to Laura Drinnen-but we are not sure who this is. Turning our attention to cemetery records, we consulted a book entitled In the Shadow of the Smokies, published (1984, 1993) by the Smoky Mountain Historical Society. In the Boyd's Creek Cemetery, we find Cora Ethel Carson 2 Feb 1891 - 19 Jul 1975. From Ruth's perusal of the church minutes, it becomes obvious that the Hood and Carson families were Very active in this church. With a few more married names now known, it was time to return to the Internet. The final child of Elias and Sarah Beatty Carson whom we have been able to find is one reference to Sarah. We realize that this is only a small beginning in the delineation of a family. We welcome additions and corrections, but we trust that we have given researchers a solid start with this family. Some genealogical facts that need to be uncovered are the following: a. The cemetery where Elias and Sarah are buried. b. A discrepancy arose when we found the Lydia Hood marriage in Knox County. Was Grainger County correct, or is the Shiloh mentioned on the Tree page actually a community near the Knox and Sevier county line? c. Did the other children of Elias and Sarah live, marry, and raise families, or did they die young? d. Why did this family originally move to Tennessee? Elias Carson lost a brother in the Civil War, a brother who was emphatically Confederate. Some of their Carson relatives here in Jackson County were just as emphatic in their Union leanings. Was this a factor? Was the particular area where Elias and Sarah lived one of strong Union sentiment? We hope that this article will be of use to our Carson descendants in the Jackson County Genealogical Society. Pauline Ensley, Rick Frizzell, David Frizzell, Joan Gillett, and Richard PanneU all are descended from this family. To our knowledge, we have no descendants of Mary Catherine Carson Queen in our group, but we would be glad to recruit a few of them too. We are struck by the number of skilled workers that show up in this article. We knew Deans - highly skilled carpenters - all through the years, and we have recognized the same skills in Queens and Frizzells. Was the capacity for these talents inherited from the Carsons? 62 Kj Kj \J Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2006 Vw A L o o k -at My C.C.C* Bssys [Ed. When Ann Davis Melton called and offered to share her materials related to her father's recent book, we jumped at die chance to use these. We believe you will find it, as well as the book, to be fascinating reading.] <~< ^ Frank Davis was a young man from Mebane, in central North Carolina. When a friend joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, Davis looked into it and joined too. He was sent to Smokemont, where he polished his skills as a mechanic, made thirty dollars a month (twenty-five of which was sent home), and met Elizabeth Sherrill, whom he would eventually marry. 63 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2006 In his own words home to his mother, Frank Davis said in a letter dated 20 Jun 1934: Dear Mama: We didn't have to (go) out to work today because it rained. We'll have to work Saturday to make up for i t What is John going to do with his motorcycle? Did he put some new chains on it? Wonder what he would take for it (if) he sells it. I wrote Mr. Blackwell. My pole j ob is over and I'm back on the road. Perhaps I'd better explain what kind of work we're doing. We are sloping banks along the side of die main highway. It runs right by camp. The banks are steep & high so we are tied to the top with ropes, like the picture below. [Ed. A drawing of the road bank, along with a "before" and "after" drawing follow.] Sometimes we have to stand on the side of the mountain without a rope. Our feet stuck in two little holes as big as your fists. Some of the boys got dizzy but I didn't. There is an old logging railroad along the top of the bank we're working on. An old railway car still sits there. The road hasn't been used since the war. The mountains are full of old logging camps & the trussels still stand. Also the watering tanks are still along the road they are built of wood. The hills are full of game. The cook came in the kitchen one morning and found a mountain wild cat in there he was hunting food. There are plenty of snakes here & the old mountaineers are scared to death of them. We catch them and scare them. Our camp is giving a play in Bryson City and I 'm in it. A bunch is leaving here in Jury and they will get a bunch of new ones to take their place. I believe Dwain (?) could get in he ought to investigate. The knats [Ed. Gnats] are eating me so bad I can't hardly write. I'm covered with red spots from their bites. I can get a round trip to Raleigh & back for $3.00 if I can get off. I'm not sure yet whether we'll get off or not I will write you when I found out Guess I'd better go to bed before the knats eat me up. Love to you & daddy - [Ed. The above letter home was written before Davis began his mechanic work.] Kj KJ Above, an interior photograph of the barracks. Frank Davis was at Camp 411, Smokemont. KJ 64 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2006 [All of the chapters of the Davis book are very interesting, but one of the best is entitled L . "The New Power Shovel." This new piece of earth-moving equipment was a great help to the boys who were doing everything by pick and shovel, but sure enough, the machine got away from its operator and slid over the bank. It was considerably dented, but it was still employable.] [Another very fine chapter is "Life in the Barracks." In the author's words:] Along with the army cots we were issued to sleep on, we were also issued the same number of blankets. Sometimes when it got very, very cold, some of us would pool our covers and double up - sometimes even triple up. We would push two cots together, side by side, and spread out three sets of covers-. We would take turns being the third man who would have to sleep in the middle on the cot edge poles. Thankfully that didn't happen very often. Each barracks had two wood stoves - one at each end of the building. There was a night watchman whose job it was to keep the fires burning during the wintertime. But on the nights when the temperature would drop below zero, we had to be creative to keep from freezing. We didn't have much in the way of clothes, and all we had was army issue. If we had a date with a girl in town we would borrow clothes from one another...On special occasions Uke Thanksgiving and Christmas, the camp would provide a big dinner in the main haUs and we were allowed to invite someone from out of town, such as a girlfriend. We looked forward to these events because they meant good food and good company, but sharing clothes became more difficult because everyone wanted to look good. [A surviving menu from the Thanksgiving dinner of 1934 reveals the following: i ^ Oyster Soup Oyster Crackers ^ ^ Roast Turkey Spiced Virginia Ham Dressing Cranberry Sauce Giblet Gravy Candied Yams Creamed Peas Mashed Potatoes Queen Olives Sliced Pickles Celery Pineapple and Lettuce Salad Deviled Eggs Parker House Rolls Short Cake with Whipped Cream Assorted Pies Mixed Nuts Assorted Candies Coffee Cigars Cigarettes [Another fascinating chapter is entitled "Dangers Abounded."] When working with trees one has to learn to be careful. One day a crew was working on a trail leading out from Newfound Gap and two of the guys cut down a tree. They had cut it high on the stump and the tree had fallen with a large splinter still holding. They proceeded to cut the splinter, one boy standing on each side and one standing with his back to a large cliff. When the splinter was finally cut, one of the limbs trapped under the fallen tree had thrown it into a bind. When the splinter was finally cut, the tree swung around, pushing the boy on the Cliffside backwards, causing him to fall onto the rocks below. He was severely f injured. ^ ^ [Even with heroic effort on the part of his coworkers, this young man died.] 65 Journeys Through Jackson Spring 2006 [Frank Davis was assigned to NP-5, Co. 411, located at Kephart Prong, Smokemont NC. Their work is evident throughout our region, and, sadly, many of our people are forgetting the work done by young men who were delighted to have any j ob in the 1930's. As small fry always interested in what the adults were talking about, we would hear - and wonder about — this expression. In retrospect, we comprehend that when those folks said "onethangenanother" that they meant "a little of this, a little of that," " various and sundry," or any number of variations on the same theme. We like "one thing and another."] JCGS member Wilda Parkhurst (4759 Windemere Longview WA 98632) writes the following request: Is there anyone there who knows the homeplace where John and Margaret Cope lived and the one beside it where Wesley .and Creasey Melton lived? Would you take pictures of them and e-mail or mail them to me? I know they were there this past August. I have not been back there since 1955 and have no pictures. They lived on Caney Fork." JCGS member Ida Thompson Trantham of Concrete, Washington, sends along a correction. Her mother's name was Emma Estella FrizzeU. Magdalene was her mother's sister, "Aunt Maggie Mathis." Conrad and Lucille Claybo, also of Concrete, Washington, write, " We are still looking for information on Charlie Garvis Pressley, son of William Jarvis Pressley and Sarah "Sallie Ann Rhodes. His 1918 World War I draft registration (12 Sep 1918) states he was born May 4 1885, right leg off between hip & knee. He was a mica miner. His mother SaUie was married to Lucius Monteith in 1900 census in Jackson County, CuUowhee Township. He married Nancy Mills Jan 27 1918." Want a good read? Find JCGS member and Jackson County institution Walter Middleton's new book Trouble at the Forks. Among other interesting stories in the book, Walter gives a recount of the Hooper - Watson feud, a bloody Civil War - era falling-out in this county. (When new JCGS member Dale Watson was in our office this spring, and revealed that he lived in California, we jokingly told him that the last Californian in our office had been of his same profession but was a Hooper descendant. Maybe they could find each other and have a fistfight. Somehow, given the gentlemanly deportment of both of these men, we are doubtful of such an eventuality.) From JCGS member Helen Miller Wood" comes this recipe found in the "Miller box." We are not sure what this is. Members? 3 Lemons peeled and sliced 3 lbs. granulated sugar 3 cakes good yeast 1 quart corn meal Pour over this one gallon boiling water. Put in stone jar and let stand for 20 days if you can. [Ed. Good grief. We suspect this would make either a very strong drink or a cure for something. We don't reckon we'll try it.] Prejudice and ignorance knew no bounds, apparently. In the North Carolina State Archives, in a box entitled "Haywood County Records of Slaves and Free Persons of Color 1823 - 1868" in the "Criminal Actions" folder, we find where John Morrow is in court in the fall of 1849 for buying a peck of corn from Jackson, slave of James H.
