  • ^~ 1 J o u r n e y s T h r o u g h J a c k s o n The Official Journal of the Jackson County Genealogical Society, Inc. V j Vol. V, No. 9-10, 11-12 September-October, November-December, 1995 President's Message Hello again! This year is moving on at a rapid pace. This is one of my favorite times of the year. Cool, dry days with splendid color and, most of all, pumpkin pie! Old Mad Winter is just around the corner, and his son Jack Frost has already begun his visit on our cars and flowers early in the mornings. With the arrival of autumn, we find our gardens gone, our graass dead, and lots of free time on our hands. This is a great time to do some of that research that you have been wanting to do all summer. It is also a great time of the year to go and search for the graves of loved ones. some other close relatives and friends. My job has become increasingly busy, and I have not had the time to devote to our publication that I would have wished to have. Roy and I have been making plans for some leisure activities after I retire at the end of May, and as a part of these plans, we are divesting ourselves of as many responsibilities as possible. I plan to use 1996 as a year of rest and refreshment Again I thank all of you for the support you have given me, and I look forward to the continued growth and success of our Society. Ruth Shuler n We are still working on trying to get a permanent residence at the court house. Things are moving at a snail's speed for everybody involved in this process. We will have to just be patient and wait As Edmund Burke once said, "Our patience will achieve more than our force." The Board of Directors applied for the same grant that we failed to receive at the beginning of this year. As with the last time, it will be a while before we receive any answer. Hopefully, this time we might receive a better answer, one of money! Good luck in your research, and be sure to keep the society informed of any important news and discoveries. CALENDAR January 11 - regular Society meeting, 7:00 p.m. February 8 - regular Society meeting, 7:00 p.m. March 11 - regular Society meeting. 7:00 p.m. Watch the newspaper for details, or listen to WRGC in Sylva. For out-of-town members who may wish to attend a meeting, the date is always the second Thursday; our location varies from the Jackson County Public Library to St John's Episcopal Church. Please come and be with us whenever possible. n Brian McMahan A Note from your Editor Serving as the editor of Journeys Through Jackson for the past three years has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. So many of you have been willing to share your research, your articles, your Bible records, and other kinds of materials; and so many of you have done cemetery censuses, research at the court house and the archives, and whatever else needed doing to permit our journal to publish a great variety of genealogical data. To each one who has helped in any way, I am sincerely grateful. It is now time for someone else to take over as your editor. As some of you know, 1995 has been a hard year in many ways. More are added daily, and with the future publication of the data collected; the project will prove to be an invaluable aid to genealogical and historical researchers. If you have knowledge of the burial place of any Confederate soldier or veteran, we warmly solicit your submission of that information. We also welcome additions to our statewide staff of volunteer cemetery surveyors. \^J 94 u u Submissions for the database should include as much of the following information as is available: Full name of soldier or veteran, dates of birth and death, name of cemetery or burial location, nearest road or municipality to burial location,. Davis . 101 THE FAMILY OF RACHEL MALINDA FRIZZELL AND AMOS ASHE (The following is the first "chapter" of a genealogy project assembled by Larry Crawford in February of 1995.) On July 24, 1843, Rachel Malinda Frizzell (born 12/24/1824) became the second wife of Amos Ashe, who already was the father of a family by his first wife, an Ashe cousin. They lived in the Ashe Settlement area of Jackson County and would have nine more children. Amos Ashe died in 1873, Rachel Malinda after 1880. Their graves have not been identified. Their children: Margaret Melvina Ashe (1844) md. George Wesley Phillips John McDowell Ashe (1846) md. Martha Jane Shuler Amos Ashe (1848) Rua Emeline Ashe (1853) md. William D. Buchanan M. A. GRANDCHILD #1 - MARGARET MELVINA ASHE PHILLIPS o Margaret Melvina Ashe was born to Amos and Rachel Malinda on May 7,1844. She married George Wesley Phillips (04/26/1831 - 7/12/1922) and was the mother of eight children: John W. Phillips (1866) md. Artie Jane Crawford Ellen Phillips (1869) George W. Only Hattie was ever married, unless James R. did so in middle age. .GRANDCHILD #3 - AMOS ASHE Amos Ashe was born about 1848 to Amos Sr. and Rachel Malinda. He was alive in 1860, not around in 1070, is not mentioned in the will. He would have been young for the War of Northern Infamy and Aggression, but searches of the regimental records might be productive. GRANDCHILD #4 - RUA EMELINE ASHE BUCHANAN Rua Emeline Ashe was born to Amos and Rachel Malinda about 1853. She would marry William D. Buchanan (2/05/1860 - 3/24/1935) on September 15, 1878. .She died soon after the birth of her second daughter, but the ages on the daughters' grave markers are slightly wrong. In the 1880 census Rachel I. was a baby and was the only child. William D. Buchanan is buried at Old Savannah. Their children: Rachel Idamae Buchanan (1878) m. I disagree with researchers who try to place Hix Ashe as a son of Rachel Malinda. I believe Margaret Melvina to be her oldest child, born a little over nine months after her marriage. 2. Specific birth date for Amos Sr., death dates and burial sites for both Amos .and Rachel Malinda. 3. Identity of husband of Ellen Phillips 4. Why Margaret Melvina and George Wesley Phillips were not together in the 1900 census 5. Research in Henderson County for Victoria Matthews 6. Burial site for Wellington Lee Phillips 7. Death date, burial site for James R. Ashe (son of John M.) 8. If Rua Emeline's older two daughters were illegitimate, where were they in 1880? Are their stones wrong? 9. Burial site for Effie Etta Ashe Baird Pressley? Hooper-Speedwell? 10. Death date, burial site for Otis T. Ashe 11. More information on lives, deaths of M. A. and R. M. Ashe 12. Obituary data for the three middle daughters of James and Lillian Cowan Ashe. Husbands' full names would help. 13. The parentage of Amos Ashe. I consider it impossible for him to be a son of Isaac Ashe, as John Reid Ashe had it in Ash. Ashe. Stillwell. unless Isaac were fathering children at age 12, or even better, if Amos were a father at age 10 or so. Isaac, Amos, and Jesse Ashe were not all brothers, because Amos first married Jesse's daughter. My argument is that Amos was at most a nephew of Isaac and Jesse, and possibly a son of Lincoln County Thomas Ashe. 105 WILL OF WILLIAM FRIZZELL (This will dates from 1767, Fairfax County, VA. C, Cling. 115 AD ASTRA, CAROLINE, PER ASPERA By Larry Crawford As late as the publication of our heritage book in the fall of 1992,1 had bemoaned my ignorance of a surname for one of my great-great-grandmothers. It seemed that all of the genealogical circumstances were conspiring against me. First, I had been given some (ultimately) incorrect information by my paternal grandmother. Now given that grandparents are revered individuals who usually approach sainthood in their grandchildren's eyes, I was not likely to question the veracity of her statement that her maternal grandmother Caroline was a Bryson who married a Bryson. (When my grandmother's mother died, the death certificate read the same way.) Second, in 1850, Caroline was duly listed as the wife of Henderson Bryson in the Cullowhee (I suppose) area of Macon County. She was the mother of a number of children at the time, but not my great-grandmother, who was not born until 1851. Caroline was not in the picture in 1860, and Henderson had a young wife named Ruth. Any amateur would conclude that Caroline had died. But then, another uncomfortable circumstance came to light In the 1860 census, my great-grandmother Sarah Jane was, at nine, the youngest child in the household. The young wife Ruth seems to have had no children. But in 1870, there were four children younger than Sarah Jane, three of whom were born in the 1850's!! The presence of these three children started me on a wild goose chase. \ J What had happened to Caroline? I first asked Irene McClure, whom I knew to be related to Dad on that side. She pointed me in two directions, to some LDS material owned by her sister Frances Hyatt and to Mountain Grove Cemetery, where some of her family is buried. Unfortunately, neither revealed anything substantial about Caroline. Dad and I then asked his first cousin Clyde Beck, whose mother "Liney" was named for Caroline, but Clyde wasn't sure either. He went with us to Claybron Bryson, another of Caroline's great-grandsons, but Claybron was like us, unclear on Caroline. Dad called Edwin Knight, stiSI another of Caroline's great-grandsons, and Edwin said that he understood that Caroline at some point had left Cullowhee. If one realizes that these conversations were going on in the late 1970's and early 1980's, but that the subject had lived from about 1820 to the 1850's, one sees the potential for mistakes and problems. Considering what I thought I knew, I concluded that Caroline had parted company with Henderson (who, according to my aunt was not exactly the nicest guy in Cullowhee) and had taken her younger, more dependent children elsewhere, sometime in the decade of the 1850's. One rumor in the Knight family placed her at Glenville, where two of her children lived. But the 1860 census for several counties revealed no Caroline and no children. I still assumed that in the 1860*s she had died and that the younger children had gone to live with their father and his second wife. The years passed for me, and I would from time to time examine the Brysons of Henderson anr' Buncombe counties to see if I had somehow missed a Caroline. No luck. In the summer of 1995, I decided to rethink Caroline. I knew that the second wife's (Ruthie Jane's) maiden name was Davis. 116 u I also knew that one of Henderson and Caroline's sons had a death certificate calling his mother "Mary Davis." Since I also knew that the given name in question was "Caroline," I had always dismissed this death certificate as benign ignorance. I>was the ignorant one, as the reader will see. Thanks to the persnickety nature of the 1850 Macon county census taker. I knew that Caroline was born in Buncombe County. I also knew that she and Henderson lived there in 1840. I had tried to get help by placing queries int he OBCGS bulletin, but no substantial help had emerged. So on one of the infrequent (but productive) trips that Rick Frizzell and I make to the state archives, I decided to look at the Buncombe County estate file on Davis. Epiphany and serendipity. In the first file I opened, on the second page of material, was a list of Caroline's children as heirs. I took several deep breaths, wrote in my notebook, "Oh my God...Caroline" and turned to Rick and said, "Observe your uncle George Wilburn Bryson. After eighteen years, I just found Caroline." I'm, not sure what I did next, but I managed not to jump on the table and beat my chest I waited until I reached the steps outside before I took a running fit. So who was Caroline? She was one of the daughters of, David Davis of South Hominy Creek in Buncombe County. When David Davis died July 26, 1873, Caroline was already deceased. But, interestingly, the heirs of Davis extended only to my great-grandmother Sarah Jane Bryson Parris. The other 1850's children of Henderson .Bryson did not belong to Caroline. Not only had I finally discovered her maiden name of Davis, but I had proof of her father as \_j well. The father had a second wife who could not possibly be Caroline's mother, but since that circumstance simply started the whole problem ,oyer again, I decided to put it on the back burner for a while, and enjoy what I did have. When David Davis died, an alarming .number of people in western Buncombe County sued each other over his estate. My great-grandparents, Samuel and Sarah Jane Parris, were subpoenaed from Jackson County. The lawsuits dragged on for fifteen or so years, with the consequence that the estate file contains literally hundreds of pages. Without having studied it closely, I have the idea that the estate administrator was less than honorable, and decided to sell property prematurely. At any rate, there was extensive litigation, and I haven't yet investigated everything. Who was this family of Henderson and Caroline Davis.Bryson? Henderson Bryson, born about 1817, one of the sons of John W. and Jane Poston Bryson, of Cullowhee,, married Caroline Davis, one of the daughters of David and Sarah ' ,. Davis of Hominy Creek, Buncombe County. Their children: 1. Martha, born about 1837, married twice, first to A. J. Wilson .and second to Jesse Henson. The family lived in the Glenville area and are buried at Hamburg.- .Dorothy (Mrs. David) Pruitt is a descendant < J 2. Isabella, born about 1838, married Levi Jefferson Mathis. This family lived in the Argura section and are buried in Mathis Cemetery there. Bonnie (Mrs. Furman) Fortner is a 117 descendant, as is Bucky Mathis. 3. George Wilburn, born about 1839, married twice, first to Dorcas Jane Frizzell and second to^^y Mary McCall. They lived on Big Ridge and are buried at Hamburg. Claybron Bryson is a descendant 4. John Milton, born in 1842, married Sarah Haskett and lived in the Tilley Creek area. They are buried at Hooper-Speedwell Cemetery. Irene McClure is a descendant. 5. David Coleman, born about 1844, married Vian Ford and lived int he Wilson Creek area. They are buried at Hooper-Speedwell Cemetery. Joyce Bryson Crowder is a descendant. 6. Robert Hamilton, born in 1847, never married according to Updike and, at the time of the estate brouhaha, lived in Georgia. Presumably he is buried there. 7. Elizabeth Atheline, born in 1848, married William Walker Knight and lived on Wilson Creek. They are buried at Hooper-Speedwell Cemetery. Alliney Bryson is a descendant as was Edwin Knight. 8. Sarah Jane, born in 1851, married Samuel Parris and lived on Parris Branch. They are buried at Old Field Cemetery. Ruth Shuler and Larry Crawford are descendants. One final note. The David Coleman Bryson family, the one who called Caroline a Davis air—' along, was indeed correct Joyce Bryson Crowder knew that Davis was correct hut my genealogical ignorance was such that I didn't even realize that she was a Caroline descendant Happily, that situation has been remedied, and it does little good to agonize over genealogical time poorly spent which I had done for years chasing wild geese. Like any good genealogy story, this one raises more questions than it answers. 1. What is the possibility that Caroline's mother was a Bryson, and that the story just got altered slightly through the years? 2. Who was Henderson Bryson's second wife, or at least the mother of the 1850's children who show up on the 1870 census? She seems to have been one Lottie Mathis, or maybe Lottie was the- unmarried mother of some of Henderson's late 1860's children. This one requires considerably more work. 3. Did Henderson really die in Young Harris of snakebite, sometime about 1890, as Updike asserts? The latter is not very dependable, but is awfully voluminous. 4. What has happened to the descendants of the children who moved to the Towns County area? So, Ad Astra Caroline per Aspera. To the stars, Caroline, through difficulties. 118 THE NORTON METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, SOUTH, REGISTER {jt Mr. Hilton Norton, 10609 Hilltop Road,,Omaha NE 68134-2829, recently donated to the Jackson County Genealogical Society the Register of the Norton Methodist Episcopal Church, South. U 119 JACKSON COUNTY EAR MARKS When Jackson County was formed in 1851. there were few, if any, fences- Residents allowed their livestock to roam loose and, in order to identify a particular animal as belonging to a certain person, men would choose a method of cutting the ears of stock and then go into court . and register their designated earmarks. This had the effect of becoming a legitimate public record and was an established method of stock"*- identification.
