Larry Crawford Journeys Through Jackson is the official publication of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. Members and non-members are invited to submit genealogical materials for publication, with the understanding that the editor reserves the right to edit these materials for genealogical content, clarity, or taste. The Society assumes no responsibility for errors of fact that may be contained in submissions, and except where noted, the opinions expressed are not those of the editor or of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices for other non-profit groups. From the Editor We finish this year in the Jackson County Genealogical Society with a wide range of feelings and emotions. In this past year alone, we have said goodbye in these pages to an unusually high number of our friends in the Society, and we never do so without the ambivalence of loss and hope for a rewarding eternity. For all of those families who have had their Uves touched in this way, we again offer our sympathy. In another respect, we have had the most successful year in the history of our Society. When Tommy Sutton, James Massingale, Thomas Kryssbek, and Paul Lindsay paid membership dues late in the year, they pushed us over another membership record. We thank you gentlemen, one and all. Another wonderful gift came to the Society from JCGS member Hazel Barker, and with its impetus, the Society voted to purchase a new microfilm machine. We now have a very fine reader at the office, and a number of donated rolls of film. The Society plans to purchase more rolls in the future, so that we may have yet another resource for the good of our membership. We don't live in a perfect world, nor is our group a perfect microcosm. But we will take what we have and be grateful for the opportunity to preserve more of the history of Jackson County's families. We have some of the most interesting meetings held in Western North Carolina, and those meetings are always well-attended. Philosophically, we have a healthy abhorrence of both sloth and snobbery, and we work diligently to ensure their continued absence. May all of you have the happiest holiday ever, and may all of you renew your membership. We offer our sympathy to his wife Carol, also a JCGS member, and to all of the members of the Broom family. We also offer our sincere sympathy to JCGS member Christine Cole Proctor on the recent loss of her husband Troy. Our neighbors, friends, and cousins in Swain County lost a good one in Troy. Heaven's gain. Ky 171 Journeys Through Jackson November - December 2002 J C G S P h o t o A l b um y KJ We are always glad when JCGS member Carl Sutton makes a trip through Jackson County, because he has a talent for finding (and sharing) old photographs in his family. On this page, Benjamin Evans Buchanan and his first family. In the front row are Victoria Nancy, age 7; Benjamin, holding Octa; Maude B., age 4. In the back are James Nathaniel, age 15; the wife and mother, Josepha Lucille Elmore Buchanan; Emma E., age 17; William Elmer, age 11; and Enley E., age 8.[Ed. This photograph would have been taken in 1899, since Emma (Mrs. Arthur Allen) was born in 1882, and Octa (Mrs. Bedford Ensley) was born in 1898.] y 172 Journeys Through Jackson November - December 2002 J C G S P h o t o A l b um Carl also shares with us this picture of Benjamin -Evans Buchanan, this time with part of his second family in the yard of the farm house. In the front are Mary Alethia (1910-1988), Buchanan, Wade Hampton (1911-1988), second wife Carolina Buena Vista Isabelle Thompson (1880-1955), William Roosevelt (1912-1999), and Missouri Ellener (1908-1988). The taller girl in the back is Carrie, a daughter from the first family, 1901-1988. She would become Carrie Buchanan Ward. Benjamin Evans Buchanan and his second wife had eight children. C 173 Journeys Through Jackson November - December 2002 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m KJ y Now here is one for members to study around that winter fire. Carl Sutton relates that the man third from the right is Leroy Sutton (1891 - 1974), son of William Allen Sutton. Carl would like to know the identities of any of the other men, as well as the location and the type of business pictured here. We can see what appear to be bolts of cloth, grips, other luggage on the top, an umbrella, possibly shoeboxes. Was this a general mercantile business with dry goods. At the request of JCGS Technology Coordinator and very active Old Buncombe County Genealogical Society member Deanne Gibson Roles, we are here reprinting the brochure for a recently .formed group. Read the enclosed information, and if interested, contact the Society for a membership application.] Who is eligible for membership in FFOB? Any person who can prove descent from a qualifying ancestor may apply for membership in FFOB. What constitutes a "qualifying ancestor*'? Any ancestor who can be proven to have been in Old Buncombe County at any time between the formation of the county in 1792 and December 31, 1800 is a "qualifying ancestor". This includes, but is not limited to: • Any person listed on the 1800 Federal Census in Buncombe County . • Any person listed in the 11th or 12th Company in Burke County or the 13th or 14th Company in Rutherford County on the 1790 Federal Census • Any person listed in the Buncombe County Court records 1792-1800! • Any' person listed on the original Petitions for the Formation of Buncombe County Application is solicited and encouraged from any individual who can offer any proof that his/her ancestor was in Buncombe County during the designated time period, (regardless of his/her presence on the above listings. The final decision to accept any proof submitted will lie with the FFOB committee, but in general, any public document will b e accepted. o*&'t/zc*teer TjferztaeB^t/roaram Ky 183 Journeys Through Jackson November - December 2002 KJ What proofs of descent are required? The applicant must submit documented proof of each step of descent from the ancestor. The following documents will be accepted: Primary Sources Vital, Court, & Tax Records Census Records Maps & Deeds Wills, Probate & Estate Records Birth & Death Records Church & Cemetery Records Bible Records Military Records Newspapers Institutional Records Business & Employment Records City Directories Secondary Sources Local & Oral Histories Periodicals Archives, Societies, Libraries No original documents are to be submitted; photocopies only. Certified copies are NOT required. Primary sources are preferred, but secondary sources will be accepted. A well-documented family history or genealogy book will be accepted for one generation only. Applicants are encouraged to submit more than one proof for any step in which proof other than a primary source is submitted. Transcriptions and published abstracts are acceptable if accompanied by a copy of the title page. Note: no information from the Internet or any County Heritage Book will be accepted without accompanying documentation. Another family member has applied and been accepted. May I use the proof he/she submitted? Once an ancestor has been proven, subsequent applicants under that ancestor need provide proof only to a common ancestor in the line of descent. This must be indicated on the application. What happens to the documentation I submit to FFOB with my application? All documentation submitted with any application becomes the property of FFOB and OBCGS and will not be returned. However, all information is placed in the society library for the use of researchers. The submitter's name and address information will be shared with other researchers only if the submitter indicates on the application that he/ she so desires. Future plans for FFOB include the publication of a book which will be compiled from the records and stories submitted by applicants & members of FFOB. Who is a Charter Member of FFOB? Any person who submits an application for membership accompanied by the proper documentation prior to December 31, 2002 will be considered a charter member upon acceptance of the application by the FFOB committee. What is the cost of application? Each application must be accompanied by a check or money order in the amount of $25.00 made payable to Old Buncombe County Genealogical Society. We continue in this issue with the work of JCGS member panny Jones.] Taken from THE DESCENDANTS OF JAMES A. DICKSON OF TENNESSEE AND TEXAS WITH ALLIED FAMILIES: COLEMAN, FULBRIGHT, HARKEY, NALL, TIPPENby Roy S. Dickson, Jr. t Johan Wilhelm Volbrecht and his family lived in Williams Township, North Hampton County, Pennsylvania. He was naturalized on 27 June 1762 and swore allegiance to the King of England. In 1769 he moved his family down the old Philadelphia Trace to the Yadkin Valley of North Carolina. On 7 August 1769 he bought a tract of land there for 74 pounds, 7 shillings, ha about 1775 (possibly as early as 1763) he changed his name to John William Fulbright. The family was actively represented in the Revolutionary War, with at least two and possibly three of the sons of John William Fulbright paying the supreme sacrifice at the Battle of Cowpens on 8 January 1781. (Based on research and lists of persons at the Battle of Cowpens, the author has not been able to support this statement.) In about 1785 John moved his family to Lincoln County, North Carolina where he is listed in the 1790 census. He made his last will and testament in 1805 in Lincoln County, North Carolina and he died in the same county in 1808. The information on the Fullbright Family (Volprecht) down to John William Fulbright is taken from THE DESCENDANTS OF JAMES A. DICKSON OF TENNESSEE AND TEXAS WITH ALLIED FAMILIES: COLEMAN, FULBRIGHT, HARKEY, NALL, TIPPEN by Roy S. Dickson, Jr., Chapter 48 "THE FULBRIGHT FAMILY" , page 140. Mr. Dickson'states that the information that he has comes from the book THE EDDLEMAN-FULBRIGHT FAMILIES By Riley Russell Eddleman of St. Louis, Missouri. It should also be noted that some FULBRIGHT researches are not in agreement with the account of the family of John William Fulbright and some believe that his wife's name was Christian Hallstead of the Long Island, New York merchant family of Timothy Hallstead B3. However, the family listing of the Halstead family does not show a Christian in the appropriate .generations. Local congregations would appoint an ad hoc committee to write an obituary upon the death of a member of the church. Naturally, most of the words written were religious in their intent and reveal the devotion (or sometimes lack of it) of the deceased to the local church, as well as complimentary words about the deceased person's character and doctrinal orthodoxy. While these words are all worthwhile, they do not all fit the scope of our publication, thus the genealogical abstracts. The editor was pleased in the particular case of the Ochre Hill church to find his maternal grandmother's name among the committee members. Church records are an outstanding source for genealogists, because they frequently include names and dates that might not be found elsewhere.] y 192 Journeys Through Jackson November - December 2002 Ky J C G S M e m b e r s h i p f o r 2 0 0 2 [Ed.
