  • ^ ^ J o u r n e y s T h r o u g h J a c k s o n The Official Journal of the Jackson County Genealogical Society, Inc. . ^ Vol. V, No. 5-6,7-8 May-June, July-August, 1995 President's Message A Note from Your Editor n Hello again! We have finally reached that time of year now when the days are longer and the nights are warmer, when you can sit out on the porch until late in the evening eating watermelon while watching the lightning bugs flicker. However, with the warm and humid days of summer come the weeds in the garden and the grass that grows almost before your eyes. I am disappointed to report that the renovation of the old court house is taking longer than expected. I had an opportunity to talk to T. C. Lewis a while back and he assured me that the Commissioners have appropriated a place for us in the old court house. The last figures I have heard project the completion of the ground floor renovations sometime during the spring of 1996. Our society is continuing to grow at an ever steady pace. We have had several new members to join during this year. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome them to our society. I am still receiving numerous letters and queries in the mall. I would like to encourage all members who have queries to send them to the society or give them to Ruth or to me. I would like to take this time to offer my condolences to those members of our society who have lost loved ones in the past few months. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Good luck in your research! Brian McMahan As you can tell from reading Brian's message, he gave it to me some time ago. We have now reached the days of clear skies and cool autumn air and. yes. many of us have survived Opal. I want to offer my grateful thanks to all who have been so patient and understanding with my delay in getting Journeys Through Jackson done during this summer. Without going into great detail, it has not been my most successful year! But please know that the delay was not because I am not interested in our Society--it was caused by many other problems and unavoidable happenings. To those few who have been upset and angry, I can only offer my apologies. To those who have given support in many ways, again I say thanks. In one instance there was a notation or ~ "The Asheville Tunes," but in most instances there is no indication of the newspapers where these items were printed. These items are typed verbatiirix_>/ from the original clipping.) Laura A. Cowen Ammons Bro. Nelson: It is with a sad heart that we record the death of our beloved sister, Laura A. Ammons, wife of Elder James G. Ammons, of Jackson county, N.C, and daughter of B. and Marthy Cowen. Was borne on East Fork of Savanah, Jackson county, Dec. 13, 1854, where she spent her early life. She married Elder James G. Ammons April 14, 1872, and resided with her husband in Macon county, N. C, till 1880, when they moved to Jackson Co., and remained until her death. She professed faith in Christ in May, 1872, and joined the Franklin Baptist church in June 1872; she was baptized by Elder W. H. Coner, near Holly Springs, Macon county., She was a devoted Christian up till her death. When her husband entered the ministry she joined with him in prayers for his success. On her death bed she told her husband that she had spent many lonely hours at home with their children while he was gone preaching, but I will soon be in heaven to meet those you have been instrumental in saving; go on in the good work. She talked to all her children and told them how to meet her in heaven. Three of her children are members of the church. Sister Laura talked with such force and faith in God that our community has never been so impressed with the death of a friend. She departed this life on the 25th day of April, 1890. Brother Ammons has lost a good companion and his children a kind mother. We pray God's blessing on the bereaved family. A. W. Davis . Barker, Jackson County, N. C. Memory of Otto Lance When in course of existence of man, says a writer in recent years, that this great illustrious man- who was well known as Otto Lance, son of M. A. Lance, was bom May 10, 1870. To minds of many it seems while humanity that is known being ever so bright that Christianity in young men in hearing the name of Otto Lance and the intelligence in his affections knew no bounds, though he was only 22 years of age. He was taken violently ill, and from the beginning of his illness for 14 days his sufferings no eye could look upon him without tears of sympathy; yet young as he was yet patience and fortitude were marvelous. As to his Christianity he believed in Christ and joined the church, was baptised by Bro. Mitchell Oct. 25, 1883. When the silent cords were loose that held the spirit of the late Otto Lance in the tenderest earthly evils, and death overshadowed him. What more could be seen but the golden land of his young life was right in the fountain of youth; his life became distinct and left to meet his God as he had called for him. Reasonably speaking, it seems the good are all taken from us and the bad ones are left. Our hero called his family around his dying bedside and in his last moments he hoped to meet one and all in heaven and said it would be nice to be all together. But at last in IS minutes before he passed away he repeated his prayer and hoped he had made a shining light the teacher of all hearts alone must know how sad this trial must be to those bereaved ones. Yet no sorrow to those that have ho hope, but rather to the Christian child who yields to the wise loving fathers will remember in whom the Lord loveth. He chasteneth the mourners heart that they learn to not forget the _ anguish and dwell on the happiness of the departed and j think how much of suffering with temptations there is in the best human life. Let us feel safer in the arms of Christ who stands around the bedside and watch the Christian breath - his last breath, is a grand and glorious scene. Thank God, who stands near. Buchanan Alonzo Buchanan, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Buchanan, departed this life Feb: 12th 1892 and his spirit returned to the God who gave it He was a young man 25 years of age; who left a wife and three children. Joined the Baptist church at an early age and lived as such up to his death. "Is there not an appointed time to men upon earth? Are not his days also like that of a hireling?" Died March 24th 1892, Mrs. Jane Buchanan wife of J. W. Buchanan who went to receive her reward at the right hand of the Father. A crown of eternal life. She was bom Oct. 6th 1841. Joined the Baptist Church June the 20th 1876 and lived a consistent member up to her death. Blessed are they who died in the Lord. John C. Buchanan ^-^ 54 Words from the Past.-'Some.Old Newspaper Clippings (continued) ^^> Our Loved One A life passed from our community February 16, 1928, that was Christ-like. How profoundly it touched our hearts! Scotts Creek Baptist Church has lost one of its most faithful workers to heaven's gain. Mrs. J. R. Snyder, formerly Miss Adaline Walker of Haywood county, came to this community more than twelve years ago, then the wife of Mr. Lewis J. Henson. Mrs. Snyder was always a loyal member to her church and its organizations. About four years ago she was elected president of our Senior B.Y.P.U. and it was in this work that she gave of her whole soul. Discouragement came and mountains arose, but she took them step by step as each day passed mounting the heights triumphant At her death she was our church mission treasurer of the Woman's Missionary Society. For several years she has been a seamstress; in the way she touched the lives of many more completely. We bow-our heads in sorrow for having lost this noble character from our church and community. She' was an ideal home maker. Let us carry on the great work her personality stood for. She is survived by her husband, Mr. J. R. Snyder; \ ^ / two small daughters, Eugenia and Marjorie Henson; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Walker of Clyde; several brothers and sisters, and many relatives and friends. A Niece, Bessie Snyder on furlough from the war. There wasn't much school to go to after that, and since he was the only boy, he had to stay home and do the work anyway, he says. He met the girl who is now his wife while going to church. Her name was Rachel Matilda Gribble, and her home was four miles from his. "I was about 18 years old when I met her," he related. "The time passed and I didn't pay much attention to her or she to me. It was no case of love at first sight Then one night I got to talking to her and we got acquainted. It was a year after that, though, before we got married." He farmed most of his life, but worked part of 22 years in a kaoline mine. Four children were bom to the couple; one of them died when a baby. There are three living: R. E. Dills of Sylva; A. C. Dills, of Johnson City, Tenn., and Mrs. C. L. Crook of Deaverview. There are eleven grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Dills have been able to make their garden every season up until last year. Five years ago he splashed lime mortar into his eye, and this destroyed the ability to work-but now old age is asserting itself. Both are getting feeble. But there is still a twinkle in his eye as he tells of their long married life, and occasionally this twinkle grows into a smile as he recalls some amusing incident ******** V w SECRET OF 62 YEARS OF MARRIED LIFE IS REVEALED BY COUPLE (February 26, 1941) There is no trick to living happy through 62 years of married life, declares Lee Dills of Deaverview. "You've just got to keep on treating your wife witH thoughtfulness and consideration." He and Mrs. Dills, who is one year his senior, are still getting along like sweethearts in their small house* at the rear of the home of one of their children. He has always been kind to her and she to fiim, they both say. • They have had their quarrels, butl always things turned out all right "It wouldn't be much of a man that didn't have a little temper a mind of his own," she said. "But I don't see any reason to let that break up a family. The things people quarrel about sometimes seem like trifles when the quarrel is all over." Christened Cicero Legrand Dills, the husband was bom in Jackson county, January 1,1857: He was about six when he remembered seeing his father come home We welcome "the following new members to JCGS: Bruce and Sandra Jones, 187 Turtle Creek, Sylva NC 28779 - families of interest: Jones; Henry. Thus came into being the "bastardy bonds." When the pregnancy of an unmarried^-—-' woman or the' birth of a child to an unmarried woman was brought to the attention of court, a warrant was issued and the woman brought into court She was questioned under oath and asked to name the child's father. The alleged father was then also brought into court and required to post bond. If the woman refused to'name the father, she, her father, or some other interested party would post the bond. In some cases the mother and the alleged father posted the bond together. If the woman refused to post bond or to name the father, she could be sent to jail. Recording of these bonds is found in the county court minutes; anyone interested in additional information on a particular case should check the appropriate court minuses for that time period.) F. (Kathleen) Jones and her son, Danny, who live in Matthews NC. Danny has sent this record for publication, and he says: "...Since mis did not copy well I am also including Family Sheets mat show the same information. The Bible was printed around 1829 and we have had it rebound. The last page of listings for the Fullbrights I have not fitted into which one of Eli Fullbright's children these belong to. They are not Daniel M.'s children as they are shown on second page (not all of them). A. B. Fulbright was Ashley Bird Fulbright, etc. I have found information that proves the connection of Mary Huffman Ash to the HOFFMANS of North Carolina which family is fairly well documented back into the 1300s." The staff of Journeys Through Jackson is grateful to Mrs. Jones and Danny for allowing us to print this Bible Record, which is copied on the following pages. 71 • i n A -'T - M ' 7' * .• H E W , T E S T A M E N T . *7'.'" (Have you searched modem maps m vain for the place name of a village, town, etc, where your ancestor lived? A source you might not have used ^•*^ is a gazetteer. Hie following article was published in Gencatosy Bulletin #25 for January-February1995 and may be'of interest in your research.) Lost Village Found (by Joanne M. Adam's, San Diego CA) I was searching for my immigrant German, who was born in Feitshof, Bavaria. (This was written in his own hand.) By accident, when I was at the Long Beach Public Library, I came across a "Gazetteer to AMS 1:25,000 Maps of West Germany," volume 1, A.D. Affenberg to Haszfelden, compiled by the Corps of Engineers, US Army, Army Map Service, Washington DC, 1954. They did it after WWII, keeping mem busy marking every railroad, train station, farm, ridge, power plant, ferry, bridge, etc. (The book was there in the map area, Dewey Decimal Call No. 914.3 Un 3*1, v. l)d. Lo and behold, Feitshof was there listed as a "farm," not a village! It gave a grid reference and a map of West Germany with die grids, sheet number, latitude, and longitude. Now I can find Feitshof on old maps. The editor of Genealogy Bulletin added these comments: Detailed gazetteers exist for all European countries, including Russia. They show placenatnes for mountains, streams, towns, Villages, lakes, and any geographic feature that has a name, along with a latitude-longitude reference. The gazetteers were compiled by extracting all named features from the 1:25,000 topographic maps produced by the Army Mapping Service. (One inch on the map is equal to 25,000 inches on the ground, hence, the scale is referred to as 1:25,000.) A similar series of maps was produced for all U.S. states. The European 1:25,000 maps are even more detailed and more accurate than the United States Geological Survey (USGS) topographic maps produced for the United States. (Our Army has no intention of fighting a war in the US, and their maps reflect trhe t ^ / accuracy needed for a military field of operations.) However, the Army's European maps are not available for purchase by the public, but the gazetteers (name lists) from these maps are available in many libraries across the United States. These European gazetteers may be found at major university map libraries and some larger public libraries. They are most likely found in the same map library designated as an official repository for the USGS topographic maps. To learn where an official repository of the USGS maps may be located in your state, call the USGS toll-free information line: 1-800-USA-MAPS. O ' 85 AMERICA'S BEST MAP LIBRARIES The following article on America's Best Map Libraries was published in Genealogy Bulletin. Mar-Apr 1995. This bulletin, published bi-monthly by American Genealogical Lending Library, Bountiful, UT, makes its section "Genealogy, Etc." free from copyright restriction as long as the issue of the Bulletin is mentioned as the source. Journeys Through Jackson is grateful to be able to use this, material. America's Best Map Libraries Genealogists need to know where a good map library is located in their state, and where copies of the best maps may be made. Here is a list of America's best map libraries, many of which are located on college campuses, but some are government or public libraries with little - known treasures for locating a wide array of maps. A large map library is the best place to find copies of the gazetteers produced by the Department of Defense for European countries. These gazetteers are the most complete listing of places in countries, including streams, mountains, villages, towns and cities, train stations, and in some cases, named farms, in fact, any place that has a name. A gazet- 86 teer may be the way to find the location of your ancestoral village in Poland, Germany, Russia, or any other European country. Many of the listed map libraries are federal repositories for the United States Geological Survey (USGS) topographic maps described in the lead article of this Bulletin, plus many other maps from other map producing agencies. To be named a federal repository, a map library must have a full-time map curator, fire proof map storage cabinets, and a policy of making the map library open to the general public Map libraries meeting these requirements may receive every map produced by USGS on a regular basis. Since the USGS is in the process of producing county maps for every county of the United States, these map libraries may be the first place where you will find the existence of such a map. You may also find state-wide maps, range - township maps, population maps, thematic maps showing ethnic distribution, railroad maps, post office maps, and many other treasures. Included with the list of map libraries below are the official state offices of the Earth Science Information Centers (ESIC) in each state. The USGS-supported ESIC offices exist for the purpose of providing information about maps, particularly maps of the United States Geological Survey. The ESIC offices are open to the public, and a genealogist can purchase USGS topographic maps (and other maps) over the counter. American libraries with extensive map collections are listed below. An address and phone number is given so a genealogist can contact the facility and learn of the hours of operation, parking requirements, etc A visit to one of these facilities will be a rewarding experience. Price: $47.58 at Sam's store in Asheville. This is one of the easiest programs I have ever used.. It has a very large variety of family trees and reports. It will print ancestor and descendant trees in 10 beautiful styles with your choice of facts. It automatically calculates all relationships in your family. It formulates birthday and anniversary calendars. It contains hundreds of reports including medical history, longevity, and more. It has family and individual group sheets, scrapbook pages, mailing labels, cards, name tags, family story pages, family books are easy to print, and it holds u p to 2 million names. It is very easy to get started. Once you have entered names of parents and then-children, t h e program automatically memorizes the data and fills in all t h e charts. The hardest part of the program is just knowing who your ancestors are. The program will even help you with that. In the famuyfinder part of the program, there is already a list of 100 million names of deceased people who appear in state and federal records. While it doesn't contain actual records, it does tell you exactly where t o find information about each person in the list. The famuyfinder references dozens of important sources form genealogy libraries around the country including: U.S. Census Records Indexes 1790- 1880, Selected Marriage Records Indexes 1600-19S0, Selected State Land Records Indexes, Social Security Death Benefit Records. With the program comes a list where ~ , you can purchase the CD's with each one of these indexes on it, that contains the V-/ information about the ancestor. Another added feature of this program is t he on-line guide to finding your ancestors. It is perfect for beginners who want t o know how t o start, whom to contact, what to ask, and much more. It contains addresses of state and county records offices and even already has preprinted form letters for requesting the mfbrmation. If this wasnt already enough, the program easily includes photos with no scanner required. By having your photo developer t o put your next roll of film or old pictures onto a Kodak Photo CD, pictures can be added t o the program. One can literally store thousands of photos in each individual's "scrapbook." I would recommend this program t o anyone who likes putting their ancestors on the computer. It will capture your time and take your genealogy t o a new level "Brian McMahan \ y 92 INDEX, MAY-JUNE AND JULY-AUGUST, 1995 ^ O O Addington Aker Aldridge Alexander Allen Alley Allison Allman Ammons Ash - Ashe Baity Bard Barker Barnes Baumgarner Melisa (?)
