F r om t h e Editor We begin a new year with the range of emotions that are part and parcel of the human condition. We are, first of all, grieved to learn of the passing of one of our members, June Edwards Shelton, and we offer our ^ sympathy to the families of her daughters and sisters who survive. / -*\ * We are also full of anticipation for the promise that 1998 holds for our Society. Our first meeting in our new office was held in January, was well-attended, and everyone there was impressed with the potentials that this new place holds for our group. We hope to establish a small library, to have regular office hours for members and visitors, to provide an environment for local research, and to organize ourselves better through this acquisition. We are eager to see a cemetery book go to press. Much work has been done, and a first draft of the book is nearly complete. Our vice-presidents are up to their usual tricks, enticing excellent speakers and guests to share their work with our group. In short, we continue to be a vibrant, working Society, one in which the membership can take pride. Our membership is so generous that the Editor might well need to ask for another page increase this year. In this issue alone, see the outstanding contributions of Betty Cope Andrews, Sharon Barger Carnes, Clint Gold, and Edward Cowan, along with some outstanding old photographs shared by our members. Make sure also to check the lists of records included this time. That cousin you need just might be on page 21. A reminder to those who have not renewed membership: With the March-April issue, your subscription expires. Our membership is based on the calendar year, and you are further reminded to send in any questionnaire still missing from the files. Read and enjoy. JCGS member Clint Gold of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, has provided the Society with two letters which we deem worthy of publication. The first is copied verbatim from a letter sent by Thomas Irvin Hughes of Bryson City to Mrs. Ida Tate. Hughes was a brother of Clint Gold's great-grandfather, and Mrs. Tate was a sister of Clint's grandfather Clark Hughes. The second letter is a description of a genealogical trip taken by Clint, wife, and son. It was written to his family members, and we have edited this second letter somewhat In its pages you will find all of the excitement we feel in making a genealogical "discovery," as well as a strong dose of the Gold humor. Thanks, Clint, for sharing these with the group.] Letter from T.I. Hughes to Ida Tate Bryson City NC Aug 26 1939 Mrs. Ida Tate Roswell New Mexico Dear Ida: The cleark of the court handed me your letter and told me to answer it. Regarding your father's farm, J.H. Hughes, on the Ocona Lufty river. In the year of 1893 I, Irvin Hughes your father's brother bought the farm from your father J.H. Hughes and your mother Rebeca Hughes. Then I sold the farm to T. M. Jenkins, then T. M. Jenkins sold it to Harris Guess then Harris Guess sold it to the Government and the Government added it to the National Smokey Mountains Park. So it is now a part of the Grate National Smokey Mountains Park. Ida I am real glad of this opportunity of writing to you. I remember mighty well the last time I saw you all. It was at Collins Store at Yellow hill as you were all leaving for the West. I never will forget how you looked and how sad, sorrow and lonesome I was for a long time. Taylor, Jeff, Jabe, Self, Bob, and Sary are all dead, leaving just Ham and myself. My name is Thomas Irvin (T. I. Hughes) I raised 2 boys Walter and Cassius and they both have famleys. I have 12 Grand Children and 2 Grate Grand children. I stade in the Mercantile business 42 years. Wore out and sold out in the year 1933 now livin on the rents of my property and I have my property rented for 5 years longer at $80.00 per month and I have 5 rooms over the store building that I have rented for my board. I keep one of the rooms for my own living. My wife died in 1913 the same year mother died. The old people that were here before you left are all dead and gone. The Government have bought out all the lands from the Monteith farm inchiding all the Smokey Mountains down on the Tennessee side to Gatlinburg. They have built hard surface Highways across the mountains so you can go from Bryson City to Knoxville and back in 4 hours-use to take about a week to make the trip. Enloes, Minguses, Haynes, Queen all sold out. There is just 3 of the Enloe family living Alace May and Julia. Joe Enloe died in the County house in Tennessee. John and Frank both died Parpers. You all left here about 47 years ago and I guess you was about 10 years old—so now you are about 57 years old and I am 78 years old and enjoying good health, since I sold out the goods business and got rested up. I have real good people living in the house with me and I don't do anything but collect rents on a Mortgage Companys property here in town. I have 14 houses to look after and the rents amounts to about $300.00 per month and I get 10% for collecting which is $30.00 per month. 15 Ham and his wife live here in town so I can see them everyday—I believe I am stouter than Ham is and I am 2 years the oldest—We are all sceared to deth about having another war. I have 2 Ky Gran boys that wouls have to go—war is so horrible. Yours truly T.I. Hughes Letter from Clint Gold to family members 607 West 320d Sand Springs, OK 74063 July 25,1995 Dear Family, With kids raised and, you think, out of the way.. .you resolve never to take a traveling vacation in the hectic days of summer.. .especially on a holiday week.. .but, we did.. .we did... We now call it our "July 4th, Pennsylvania.. .West Virginia.. .North Carolina Hoot." With wife Janice and son Michael, we headed east.. .we drove 2,900 miles and were gone 6 days. We did not call, visit or stay with any relatives. Unencumbered, we met all our objectives.. .visiting where the Gold and Hughes families lived back east. After our 1st night in Terre Haute, Indiana, we stayed at the Marriott in Pittsburgh. The hotel directed us to "Otto's" for German food.. .with our bellies full of the food of our ancestors Ky and beer to wash it down, we were enjoying the hospitality of the owners, Hazel Gossett and her husband. Suddenly, Hazel grabs and pulls us out to the street and shouts, "You must follow me to the subway and visit the Incline." So, there goes Hazel, sprinting to the subway station 3 blocks away (it seems 30 blocks).. .she shoves us on and gives the conductor instructions where to let us off. I 'm sitting there full of sausage, sauerkraut, beer, etc., out of breath, a 7 bypass heart patient, after 6 hours of holiday traffic, on a subway at 8 p.m., not knowing (or agreeing to) where I" going. Janice, Mike, and I sit there stunned, not comprehending what has happened to us. Well, the Incline is a small trolley that goes almost straight to the top of Mt. Washington where we viewed Pittsburgh at night.. .it was beautiful. We did make it back, much later, to our car at Otto's. The next day we drove to the Franklin-Oil City-Titusville area where my grandfather, Clinton Gold, and his father Isaiah worked in the oil fields. Spent a couple of hours at the Drake Museum where the first oil well was drilled in 1859.. .they had to drag me away from there. We then drove to Templeton where Clinton was bom, then a couple of miles north to Mahoning, PA, where Isaiah was born. I had an old 1876 township map showing where Isaiah's father's home was located with his name, John Gold, on the map. We found the location.. .all that is left is an old rock foundation. John Gold's home was on the south bank of the Mahoning River, one mile east of where it empties into the Allegheny River. I believe he homesteaded this N j spot, and I can understand why.. .it is so picturesque. Templeton and Mahoning have not 16 c grown.. .still have old homes and buildings from that era. Visited the cemetery on the outskirts of Templeton.. .there are a lot of Heasleys, Isaiah's wife, mary's, family. Only one Gold.. .Ganel Beatrice (1893-96), Isaiah and Mary's daughter. We then drove to the county seat of Armstrong County, Kittanning, where we had a great dinner at the Allegheny Mariner Restaurant. It's a beautiful town, but of all the Pennsylvania towns we visited, Franklin was the most impressive. I've never seen so much pride in a community.. .it looks like every street has been classified as a Historical District The Gold and Heasley families were poor people living in poor country. It is indeed poor land, very little cultivatable land.. .with the mountains sloping straight down in the rivers and streams. The mountains are so steep with massive rock outcroppings.. .an ole cow/calf unit would starve to death finding a blade of grass, but it did have iron and oil. The profits from the coal and iron furnaces were confined to a few; with oil discovered in 1859 the area boomed until 1890-1900. But oil, even though short-lived, was the impetus for hundreds of Pennsylvanians to discover a new occupation, an occupation to take them out of the poverty of working "hardscrabble farms," out of mining that iron ore, out of working the hot furnaces. So they left their beautiful state, left most of their family, their heritage.. .to gamble on life in West Virginia, Ohio, Oklahoma, etc. With that aside, we found ourselves in Steubenville, Ohio the next day.. .Isaiah and family lived there in 1911. Then down to Sistersville, West Virginia, where Isaiah Gold opened shop, manufacturing oil tanks and barges. Mary and Isaiah were community leaders there, quite active as Trustee and Board members of the Methodist Church. The two homes they lived in are still standing. A supermarket is now located where the tank shop operated. Their church still stands. This quaint, pretty community on the banks of the Ohio River is much the same.. .they must have loved it, living here from 1898 to 1910. Clinton moved his new bride Mable into a home 3 houses north of Isaiah and Mary, where they were living when my loving aunts Ganel, Mary, and Isabel were born. My Aunt Esther was born in 1912 in Parkersburg 36 miles south, where Clinton was a tool dresser in the oilman's Mecca, the Hendershot and Cairo fields, both east of Parkersburg. The next year they moved to West Virginia's capital, Charleston, where my father, Clinton Jr., and Mable Jeanette were born in 1913 and 1914. Clinton Sr. worked in the new discovery field northeast of Charleston on a tributary of the Elk River, the discovery called the Blue Creek field. The evening after leaving Pennsylvania, we stayed all night at the Marriott in Charleston, WV, then on to-Bryson City, North Carolina where my Grandpa Clark Hughes was born in 1888. Located in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park area, it's a big tourist draw, especially during July 4th weekend. After checking in at the Fryemont Inn, we drove around the area, then back to the Inn for mouth-watering trout dinners, then to sit on the veranda and watch the fireworks from the town below. In the Smoky Mountains you don't need air conditioning, just leave the windows open. That sounded great when we made the reservation; we didn't expect fireworks going off all night long! The highlight of our trip happened the next morning when we drove to the foot (the south end) of the Hughes Ridge in the National Park, located about 14 miles northeast of Bryson City. 17 This ridge was named after my great-great-great grandfather Rafe Hughes, who purchased a portion of the mountain and land below in 1815 after arriving here...I have obtained a copy of V_/ this deed. He purchased the land lying between the Oconaluftee River and Raven Fork River. The Raven forms a "V" as it flows into the Oconaluftee. He owned the land inside this "V." It is difficult to imagine a better spot in North Carolina or anywhere else. There is now a ranger station where his home stood, and about 300 feet away, a National Park Museum is located. We parked at the foot of Hughes Ridge. Armed with a topo map, Mike started up the east side of the mountain and I went up on the extreme south end. We left Janice to stand guard for snakes. Mike fell several times. I didn't fall at all, due to being more athletic and sure of foot, and also armed with the knowledge that "fat boys fall harder and faster." After 45 minutes of serpentining this mountain (it seemed hours), I found a very old foot trail which I followed. After a few minutes, I saw ahead of me a clearing in this dark pine forest, a large area with many sandstone grave markers. It absolutely sent chills all over me as I approached the Hughes Cemetery. The first legible stone I came to was a granite stone that read," Asoph Hughes, born 1924, Mary Hughes, born 1827. ..this is my great great grandfather and his wife Mary (Polly) Nations Hughes. Over in the northwest corner of the cemetery I noticed a small plot surrounded by a very old wire fence and wood posts.. .inside the area were old Rafe and wife. The inscription read, "Rafe Hughes, born 1786; Elizabeth Hughes, born 1800." They were the only stones that were legible. The other graves had 2 standing sandstones each, one at the foot and one at the head. At one time, these sandstone markers may have had inscriptions, but sandstone is very porous. It absorbs water, freezes, then flakes off. Asoph's and Rafe's stones are granite and one has to believe that these replaced the old original sandstone Ky markers. I believe that they were replaced perhaps in the 1910's or 1920's. As I studied the Rafe and Elizabeth Hughes plot, I heard Mike let out a "Whoop!" (I thought he fell again.). Mike reached the top of the ridge a point north and higher up.. .the sun bursting through a clearing as he reached the upper burial ground, the Nations Cemetery, about 1/8 mile norm of the Hughes Cemetery. We did not really expect to find these graves.. .1 had cautioned him early to be alert, that in this forest we could walk within 2 or 3 feet of the graves and not know it. It was a thrilling experience.. .one we will never forget. The Nations Cemetery is the newer of the two, with most of the burials between 1850 and 1900 with the last burial in 1926. The only legible stone is Floria Nations, 1918 to 1919, daughter of J.L. Nations. In 1937 the government documented 30 graves, 6 with names and dates. The Hughes Cemetery is documented to have 8 graves, no names. The government documented this as Nations Cemeteries, but all the records refer all burials in those cemeteries as the Hughes Cemetery and/or Hughes-Nations Cemetery. They were both, of course, on Hughes land. On the way back from the mountain, we stopped at Saunooke Village and talked to Charles Saunooke about Mike and me being his relatives. Charles looked askance until I showed him the 1897 photo of my great-grandparents Jable and Rebecca Hughes with their 4 sons and 3 (continued on page 22) ^y 18 c Jackson County Delayed Birth Certificates of Persons Born before 1900 [Key: Volume 3 Page no., name, date of birth, place of birth, father's name, father's year of birth, father's place of birth, mother's name, mother's year of birth, mother's place of birth. Grandma's papa was Henry Brogden and her mama was Eliza Watson Brogden. Grandma Arlecia and Grandpa Arch raised their family on the headwaters of the East Fork of Savannah Creek in Jackson County. Grandma's parents, Henry and Eliza Brogden, lived most of their adult lives in the Little Cove, not far down the creek from grandma's house and close to the well-known Dow Hall homeplace. Family records and tradition are seriously lacking for Henry and Eliza Watson Brogden. It was common knowledge that Henry came from "down around Salisbury." It was also well known that Eliza Watson came from Cashiers Valley to Cullowhee to work as a domestic for the Davies family. Beyond that meager information, background records and knowledge simply did not exist. In recent years, I developed an interest in my ancestors. With this belated interest at work, I started to wonder about the lives of Henry and Eliza Watson Brogden. Where did Henry come from? Who were his siblings? Who were his parents? Who was Eliza Watson? Was she one of the old Jackson County Watson families? Who were her parents and siblings? Soon, curiosity turned to research. At first, endless hours were spent reviewing microfilm of U.S. Census records without discovery. Only stubborn persistence turned frustration into success. Yes, success. The ancestors of both Henry Brogden and Eliza Watson are now known and the early lives of Henry and Eliza have been revealed. This information is significant. It means that the ancestors of Grandma Arlecia Brogden Cowan have been pushed back one generation, and the ancestors of Henry Brogden have been pushed back by two generations. These genealogical documentations of our Brogden and Watson ancestors are completely new, not previously known by any descendants. For the interest of all descendants, I am pleased to present the results of my research. Ky T h e E l i z a W a t s o n L i n e a g e . . . 1 8 50 Eliza Watson was my great grandma. In 1850, John W. Watson, Eliza's father, was living with his family in Anderson County, South Carolina. This means that our Watson line had its beginnings in South Carolina, not with the numerous Watson families in Jackson County, North Carolina. John W. Watson, his wife Melinda, and all their children were bom in Anderson County, South Carolina. Evidence could not be found linking John W. Watson to any of the other Watsons in Jackson County, North Carolina. The John W. Watson line is important because John W.'s daughter, Eliza, was the mother of my beloved grandma, Arlecia Brogden Cowan. KJ ^y 24 c c Age in 1850 John W. Watson family is still in Anderson County, South Carolina. Loranzie Dow and Edward have been added to the family, making a total of 10. John W. is working as a farmer, a miller, and a carpenter. Melinda's age jumps from 31 in 1850 to 45 in 1860. It should be realized that these are census ages, not birth certificates. Census ages vary widely. The normal variation is at least one year and sometimes they vary two to six years. Taken as a whole, they give a fairly close age picture but they are not presented as completely accurate. Watson moved from Anderson County, South Carolina, to Cashiers Valley, North Carolina. Even though the move was from one state to another, the distance was only about 50 miles north on present-day Highway 107. There were other Watson families in Jackson County and even in Cashiers Valley, but it seems John W. is rooted in South Carolina and is unrelated to the other Watsons in North Carolina. Archibald is missing and no record can be found of him in any future year. Eliza Watson has left home and is now living with the Davies family in Cullowhee. Son Elias M. has left home, Rebecca C. as well. 25 Age in 1870 V^ John W, Watson 67 Melinda 55 Melisa Jane 17 John Harvey 16 Edward 14 Loranzie Dow 12 1 8 80 Eliza's father, John W. Elias M. is now in Cullowhee with his family. Great grandma Eliza is now married to Henry Brogden. John Harvey is missing in the 1880 census but he is in Cashiers Valley in all future census years. Carolyn Stimson of Douglas, Wyoniing, great-granddaughter of John Harvey Watson, relates that Harvey went to Wyoming with his daughter Callie in 1930 and died there in 1931 at age 31. 2. Harvey's son Luna died in Highlands, North Carolina. 3. Harvey's son Leonard and his daughter Callie are also buried in Wyoming. 4. Harvey was a talented ventriloquist, which no doubt would have made him stand out around Cashiers Valley and Jackson County. 5. It is not known what became of Archibald or Elias M. Watson. Elias had a good-size family in Cullowhee in 1880. His descendants could still be around Jackson County. 6. The John W. Watson family came from South Carolina and do not seem to be related to the numerous Watson lines in Jackson County. Future researchers trying to push back the John W. Watson ancestors should direct their attention to Anderson County, South Carolina. 7. The parents, brothers, and sisters of our great grandma Eliza Watson Brogden are now known. The best possibility for descendants in Jackson County today rests with the Elias M. Watson family and with Eliza's sisters.
