President's Message Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a very Merry Christmas. 1996 has got off to an exciting pace. We have now lived through another blizzard, the Blizzard of 1996. However, this blizzard was nowhere as great as the one that we had in 1993. Nevertheless, it was a significant snowfall and interrupted our daily lives for several days. The storm only proves that whatever man does or however high tech we get, God can intervene and show us how small and insignificant we are. I would like to take this opportunity to thank several different people. First, I would like to thank the entire society for the encouragement and support that you gave me over this past year. I really appreciate all that each person has done, and I truly feel honored to serve our society in this capacity. Second, I would like to thank the 1995 slate of officers. These four other people really deserve our gratitude. They were always willing to help me in any way that I asked. They went beyond the call of duty to provide for and fill the offices for which they were elected. Again I would like to say thanks. To our new officers for 1996,1 would like to say thank you and welcome aboard. I truly am excited about working with each one of you in this new year. Our society is truly blessed with a membership that is not only excited and dedicated to genealogical work but interested in the bonds of friendship. 1996 looks to be an exciting year full of great tasks to be conquered. We will probably know an answer to the question about our space at the court house. We will be working on several different projects and look forward to a lineup of interesting and informative programs. We cannot expect to accomplish these goals and tasks with ease. It will take the undivided attention of every member to make it through successfully. Good luck in your research, and I look forward to meeting you soon. Brian McMahan From Your Editor Happy New Year and Presidents' Day. As your incoming editor I hope to continue the standard of excellence established by my predecessor, and I invite you to assist me in this endeavor. As you work with your genealogy, may 1996 be the year that you resurrect that elusive relative who proved that the earth was indeed flat by dropping off its face; or the year that you haunt libraries and visit cemeteries (not the other way around); or the time that your New Year's resolution is to organize, to publish, or even to ascertain Abraham Lincoln's true parentage. However, a review of the 1830 and 1840 census records indicates that there was probably one more child—an older daughter. (She could have been born in 1826 or 1827 and would have been old enough to marry prior to'the 1850 census.) Is there another child? Are Mary's parents Jeremiah and Nancy Nations? In Volume V, No. 9-12, the family of Rachel Malinda Frizzell and her husband Amos Ashe was documented. The following js the second "chapter" of a genealogy project assembly by Larry Crawford in February of 1995.) Second of the children of Jason and Margaret Frizzell, Margaret Avaline was born, according to the 1900 census, in September of 1825. She apparently died before 1910. On March 22, 1845, she married Solomon Frady, born in March of 1822, again according to the 1900 census. Solomon also lived a long life, apparently dying between 1900 and 1910. They lived in the Frady Cove on Little Savannah and are probably buried in the little Frady Cemetery there. She reported seven living children of twelve in 1900. Their children: John S. Frady (1846) md. Amanda Messer Margaret M. Frady (1848) md. Julius Wilburn Deitz Jason B. Frady (1849) m. 1) Nancy McMahan; 2) Martha Elmina Barker Albert B. Leander Buchanan Julius W. Frady (1869) md. Sarah Bryson (These names will now be.repeated with a grandchild number relative to Jason and Margaret Frizzell, parents of Margaret Avaline.) GRANDCHILD #10 - JOHN S. FRADY The best available data for John S. Frady is the 1900 census, which gives his birth information as April of 1846. Like some others in this .family, he spent some time in the state hospital at Morganton, although his death certificate gives his burial place as "Savannah." This could mean any of several cemeteries. He died November 8,1927. He had married Minerva Amanda Messer, who lived from June of 1848 until June 13, 1928. Her death certificate gives her place of burial as "Webster," which again could mean several places. One might surmise that they are buried together in the Frady Cemetery. She reported twelve of thirteen children living in 1900. Their children: Coleman M. Frady (1865) md. Ellen Mintz (Mince?) Wilburn Sevier Frady (1869) md. 1) Martha Jane Frizzell; 2) Hattie Ashe Reuben Frady (1870) md. 1) Florence Stillwell; 2) Maude Ammons Napoleon Frady (1875) md. FRADY DEITZ "" , The second child of Margaret Avaline and Solomon was born April 24, 1848, and would marry Julius Wilburn Deitz on October 3,1869. He was born April 29, 1849, and died January 1,1919. She lived until November 21, 1919. They lived in the East Fork section and are buried in the cemetery there. Their children: Nelson R. FRADY The third child of Margaret Avaline and Solomon was Jason B. Frady, born about 1849. On June 29, 1875, he married Nancy McMahan, born about 1856. This marriage ended in divorce about 1894, and on January 27,1895, Jason Frady married Martha Elmina Barker, who had been born about 1857. This family is not easy to research. The second family lived in Swain County, but Jason Frady died at the state hospital April 8, 1920, and is buried there. ,. ^ Children with Nancy McMahan: Margaret Frady (1884) Cynthia E. Frady Arch Frady (1888) Riley Frady (1889) Rufus Frady (1893) Children with Martha Elmina Barker: Martha Elizabeth Frady (1895) Fairelendia Frady (1896) Jason Pearson Frady (1897) Ida B. Frady (1899) Hattie Frady (1902) Alice Frady (1905) GRANDCHDID #13 - ALBERT B. FRADY According to documentation, Albert B. Frady was born January 18, 1850. On June 20, 1870, he married Nancy Frady, born about 1851 to Sarah Cox Frady. Some records list her maiden name as Cox. They would have seven children before the marriage ended in divorce. On January 12,1896, ' ~". Albert married Sarah Buchanan, who lived to be 99 and is buried at Green's Creek. Albert died v—/ < w o THE EAMD1Y OF 1VJARGARET AVALINE FRIZZELL AND SOLOMON FRADY (contd.) November 8, 1927, and is buried at Old Savannah. Children with Nancy Cox Frady: Loranzo Frady (1872) md. Maggie Buchanan Laura Jane Frady (1889) md. Felix Sherman Deitz Alice Frady ( ) md. William Cabe GRANDCHILD #14, #15, #16, #17 These are the four children probably born to Margaret Avaline and Solomon in the 1850's stretch, and who also probably did not survive until 1860, since no record seems to emerge for them. GRANDCHTLD #18 - L Y N C H D. FRADY Lynch D. Frady was born to Solomon and Avaline about 1862. He would marry Mary Bryson, born about 1855, on December 25, 1879. He would later appear in court records for abandonment She is living with her sister Angeline Bradley in 1900 and states four of seven living children. One of the deceased was apparently her child for whom she took a W. M. Frizzell to court in 1877 for bastardy. Exactly which Frizzell this was is still a matter of conjecture, but a strong possibility exists for the oldest son of James H. Frizzell. Family stories give the descendants of this family in South Carolina. A Catherine, born in 1899, was with her mother in 1900. A Lillie Frady, possibly one of this family, lived with her grandfather Ninian Bryson in 1900. GRANDCHILD #19 - MARY M. FRADY BRYSON The tenth child of Solomon and Avaline was Mary, born about 1863. She would marry Alfred Fernando Bryson on November 8, 1883, and would die before 1900. "Nando" remarried and moved to South Carolina. Their three children are' all associated with the Wayehutta ("Worry-hut") Community of Jackson County. Their children: Margaret Bryson (1885) md. Henry Lancer Dills Arthur Bryson (1886) md. Laura Dean Maggie Bryson (1888) md. David Dills U FAMILY OF MARGARET AVALINE FRIZZELL AND SOLOMON FRADY (contd.) GRANDCHILD #20 - REBECCA MARIAH CORDELIA FRADY BUCHANAN This wonderfully named eleventh child of Solomon and Avaline was born about 1866, and on June 21, 1883, would marry Leander Buchanan, known to all as "Hoot." He died December 15, 1899, but she survived until October 12, 1931. He is buried with his people at Old Savannah, she at Green's Creek, according to her death certificate, but if so, in an unmarked grave. Their children: Lonia Buchanan Laura Buchanan Lillie Ann Buchanan (1890) md. Thomas Buchanan Russell Buchanan Ida Belle Buchanan (1896 - 1922) • Mattie Buchanan GRANDCHTLD #21 - JULIUS W. FRADY About 1869, the youngest of Solomon and Avaline's children was born. On April 8, 1886, he married Sarah Bryson, probably the younger sister of Nando and Mary. He too was in court for abandonment, and I have no record of any children, unless the Lillie Frady in Ninian Bryson's home in 1900 belongs in this family rather than Lynch's. Descendants do exist, however, and are interested in genealogy, correspond, and in one case visited on Little Savannah. Julius appears to have absconded to Georgia rather .than South Carolina. I have no idea what happened to Sarah. PROBLEMS IN THE MARGARET AVALINE FRIZZELL FRADY FAMILY 1. Exact dates of birth and death for Solomon and Avaline 2. What was this woman's middle name? I have used "Avaline" for clarity, but I have seen it as "Evaline," "Elevaline," and "Adaline." Rick Frizzell has heard "Aunt Elviney." 3. Several things stand out about this family. An inordinate number of divorces among the men and the presence of mental illness (quite possibly age-related dementia) are two immediately apparent 4. Specific birth dates for all children except Albert and Margaret 5. Death dates for Lynch, Mary, and Julius. 6. Any record on the four missing children. 7. Spouse for Bessie, of John 8. Any and all information on the Jason families. 9. Specific dates for all of Albert's children except Annas and Laura. 10. Lynch's middle name I take to be Dillard. 11. Lynch and Mary's children? 12. Any information on Julius, Sarah, and their drama. 10 <**> < w o JACKSON COUNTY WELLS (The following excerpts are from Jackson County Will Book "A," copied from microfilm.
