Larry Crawford Journeys Through Jackson is the official publication of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. Members and non-members are invited to submit genealogical materials for publication, with the understanding that the editor reserves die right to edit these materials for genealogical content, clarity, or taste. The Society assumes no responsibility for errors of fact that may be contained in submissions, and except where noted, the opinions expressed are not those of the editor or of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. The Society accepts no advertising for this pubUcation except for notices for other non-profit groups. From the Editor In this publication we make a strong effort to take the member and reader on a figurative "journey" through Jackson County, both in a geographical and genealogical sense. This time our members share material from Barkers Creek, Cashiers, Glenville, Caney Fork, Tuckasegee, Sutton Branch, Greens Creek, Parris Branch, Buff Creek, Canada, and Sapphire. To add to the fun, we conclude the Mathis descendancy with a creative little piece of poetry from Shawna Hall, and we top it all off with Ruth Shuler's account of the first ten years of our Society. Now Ruth in this account would not of course sing her own praises, but we have no such reservations in this space. Charter president, co-chair of Volume n , Office Manager, and the go-to person in all matters related to the Society are a few of the hats she wears. She also does approximately three thousand other things (and that's just in one week) related to her family, her church, and her community. We suppose that we would continue to exist as a Society without her, but nobody wants to consider such a truly horrifying thought. We certainly would not be where we are as a Society without her leadership. A toast to you, Ruth, from the Society. Is it spring, or will we just skip that one again this year? Regardless of the weather, seat thyself, kick that recliner back, and enjoy JTJ. And never forget: this is YOUR publication. y V i s i t u s a t o u r W e b s i t e : h t t p : / / w w w . m a i n . n c . u s / j c g s / Journeys Through Jackson March - April 2001 Ky T a b l e o f C o n t e n t s Corrections, Query, Expressions of Sympathy 35 JCGS Photo Album 36 - 38 Caney Fork Baptist Church 39 - 42 1948 Jackson County Death Certificates 43 - 47 JCGS Library Acquisitions and Items for Sale 48 A Profile of Three 19th Century Jackson County Families 49 - 52 The Descendants of David Mathis 53 - 58 Ode to Great - Great - Grandfather David.-. 58 A Genealogy Letter in the Moss Family 59 - 60 The Descendants of Samuel McCall 61 - 64 The First Ten Years 65 - 66 Index 67-68 Ky Corrections In our January - February issue, the 1905 Glenville School identifications also include Bert Franks (on the first row, leaning and smiling); Nelson Robinson as the first person standing on the left in the third row; and in the top row, Flora Wilson next to Cassie Wilson. Our thanks to JCGS member Elise Monteith TerreU for this information. Also, in the January - February issue, on page 8, the wife of Radford Hooper should read Sadie Frizzell, rather than Sadie Frady. Thanks to JCGS member Carl Frizzell for pointing this out, and he also passes along that Sadie's mother was Candace Frady before her marriage to John Frizzell. Query Geraldine Queen (757 Canada Rd. Tuckasegee, NC 28783) seeks any information on Catherine Adline Ashe, b. 15 Sep 1832, daughter of Milas and Sarah Watson Ashe, d. ca. 1910 in Pelzer SC. She married John Alexander, and had children Kern and Sarah. Geraldine also seeks any death information on John Bradley Adzile Decater Dawson. Dawson, b. 7 Oct 1827, married Connie Rayburn 12 Aug 1849. Their seventh child, Martha, known as Aunt Mattie, was born 5 May 1863. Her father went to war before she was born and never returned. Where did he die and when? Any service records or death information sought. Mattie Dawson married Thomas Hampton Queen, son of Rev. Lewis and Lucinda Brown Queen. In Sympathy The Society offers our sincere condolences to JCGS members Bill Bishop, Jane Edwards, and Fern Mason, all of whom have suffered family losses recently. As always, our mere words are inadequate, but our thoughts are with you. 35 Journeys Through Jackson March - April 2001 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m J v ^ On this page, Barkers Creek - area folks. Shared with us by JCGS member Mack Sutton, the picture at the top left is of Thad Gunter and Josephine Messer Gunter. At the top right, a lovely lady at two ages is Catherine Sutton Messer, wife of Henry Messer. At the bottom, John Wesley Brooks, Caroline Buchanan Brooks with Mattie Brooks Bryson, Laura Elizabeth Brooks Gunter Messer, and Myrtle Brooks Bradley. Ky C Mystery Photo page: We don't know who they are, but we have a feeling that someone is going to help identify these. These pictures, along with others that we plan to use in future issues, are in the Ashe family now, but the owners are also unsure of the identities. At the top right and at the bottom left are two religious scenes familiar to anyone of a certain age in Jackson County. Where was the decoration? Could this be at the cemetery at the East LaPorte Church? And maybe someone will recognize one of the young rogues at the top left. In the center right is a photograph that is especially intriguing. This is very definitely not a recent picture, and this lady was not young when the picture was made. Shared with the Society by David Frizzell. 37 Journeys Through Jackson March - April 2001 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m Ky Another absolutely classic photograph, this shows the taxi service from another day. The surrey above was used to cany tourists from the train station at Toxaway to Sapphire and Fairfield and other points. Below, an outing at Glenville in the summer of 1919. The lady on the first row left is unidentified, but beside her is Sarah Wilson Monteith and Rosa Collins. The children in the center are Kims Collins and Elise Monteith. In the third row are Ruby Collins, Edith Collins, Bertha Henson, Thelma Collins, Elzie Monteith, and Ellefair Calloway. At the back are Robert K. Collins and Wilburn Oscar Monteith. Both pictures are shared by JCGS faithful member Elise Monteith Terrell, who adds that the Collins family moved to Canton. v_y ^ 38 Journeys Through Jackson March - April 2001 Ky C C a n e y F o r k B a p t i s t C h u r c h [Ed. This one, members, is pretty amazing. Not only do we publish excerpts from one of the most important primary source documents in Jackson County's social history, but also we are able to see mention of ancestors of many JCGS members. Our thanks to JCGS member Rev. T. Walter Middleton for sharing this wealth of information with us, and we also give a salute to Tuckasegee Baptist Church, the present-day congregation of the old Caney Fork Baptist. A note to readers: Occasionally an old church record will contain embarrassing details about members' lives. We see no reason to repeat those here. The church body would generally forgive the offender for his or her transgressions in the intemperate use of alcohol, sex, speech, mild violence, or such social sins as dancing. For us to do less is both ignorant and ignoble.] Church Formation and Mother C h u r c h Activities Church was constituted December 17th A.D. 1836 The following members dismissed from Collowhee [Cullowhee] Church; Called a presbytery consisting of Elders Adam Corn & Thomas Henson & George F. This was followed by the same action April 8 for Pollie Middleton and Elender Middleton, and again on May 7 for Baxter Hooper and Lou Long.] April 20,1889 ^ "Heard the suggestion of pastor in regard to allowing the people of Rocky Hollow to act as an arm of this church" [Ed. June 1871 (no date given) "Agreed to give Sister Edy Love (freedwoman) a letter of dismission to be with others constituted into a separate church for the colored brethren and sisters in the county" [Ed. We find mention of only one other African-American in the book. This was a man named George Frip, who was received by experience of grace May 24, 1879. In a list of members, he is shown eventually as deceased. There are two ways of looking at this issue. One is that the church was open enough in a segregated society to accept all Christians. The other is that mention is very carefully made of the race of these two members, notable simply because of the first fact, but largely unnecessary where a greater reality is concerned.] Miscellaneous Items of Interest Feb 24, 1867 "Services were held with the church now located near the fork of Tuckasige." July 1869 "Resolved that politics and all issues growing out of politics shall be ignored and that we never will consent to any Division of our Denomination on those questions" [Ed. The fact is that the members of this church saw their fathers, sons, and brothers go to fight on both sides in a fairly recent war, so this was a profound statement. Leaders of today might be well-advised to try to locate some of the same wisdom.] April 6,1878 "Took up the reference and considered the propriety of moveing the Church to the Institute." [Ed. Where was the Institute?] From p. 344, a list of contributors to the salary for pastor R.H. Moody. The total for 1859-1860 was $39.00, of which David Mathis, Harvey Gillespie, William D. Hooper, John A. Hooper, and James J. Hooper were the principal contributors. 41 Journeys Through Jackson March - April 2001 Excerpts from obituaries in the church record \^_J [Ed. We will mainly quote only the items of genealogical importance here. Where the spelling has changed the meaning of the text, we will add brackets for clarity.] Caneyfork March 5* 1859 We are pained to record the death of our beloved sister in Christ Mary Brown who departed this life August 2 1858 aged about seventy four years. According to Walter Middleton, the assailant was also in the Hooper family, and this shooting was part of the infamous feud between that family and their Watson cousins.] (No date given) Brother Harrson [Harrison] Parker joined the Church at a protracted meeting at the School House below the fork of Tuckasiege River in the year 1859.. .this terbel [terrible] war Brok out the North and South Camen [commenced] firm in warfare...and he volunteered...the Company that be Belong to Mete at Webster then to Aashvill then to Morganton then to Reoley [Raleigh] the Capel [capital] of the state.. .moved to Grahamville and to Peterburg Virginia then to Richmon then to the Grat Batel [great battle] near Richmon and he (was) wounded there.. .and Died som tim [some time] in August 1862 [Ed. On April 17, 1852, the body had excluded Lewis Queen for "killing hogs not according to law." Explanations, members? She graciously aUowed us to copy photographs and Family Bible pages for use in this pubUcation. Her grandfather, James Parris, was the youngest son of John and Hannah Ensley Parris. [We wUl include a page of photos dealing with John Parris in a future issue.] John was in turn one of the sons of David and Mary Morrow Parris. Hannah was the oldest daughter of WUUam and Judith Lackey Ensley. Florence WUson Parris, Dixie's grandmother, was one of the daughters of Manson and Brunetta Cockerham WUson. Manson in turn was a son of John and Mary Baker WUson. Brunetta in turn was the oldest daughter of John and Delphia Hall Cockerham. John WUson was a son of Richard and Rachel Strain WUson. John Cockerham was a son of WUliam and Charity Jennings Cockerham. Mary Baker was probably a daughter of Nathan Baker, who lived in IredeU County in 1800. Delphia HaU was the only daughter of Joshua HaU, Jr. and Jane Queen. >u KJ 50 Journeys Through Jackson March - April 2001 K, Ky Above, the James and Florence Wilson Parris family about 1900. When the P.J. Crawford house burned in March of 1958, this record was rescued from the ashes by EUzabeth Parris Crawford. She was the next-to-youngest daughter of Samuel and Sarah Jane Parris, and the Bible record now is with her daughter, Blanche Crawford Morris of Murphy. Ruth Shuler transcribed the record for us. The daughter called "Hannah" in the births is the same person as "Linnie" in the marriages, and "Lina" in the deaths. This daughter was named for her grandmothers Hannah Ensley Parris and Caroline Davis Bryson. Samuel Parris was a brother of James Parris in the pages before, sons of John and Hannah Ensley Parris. Sarah Jane Bryson Parris was the youngest daughter of Henderson Bryson and Caroline Davis of WUson Creek. [Ed. We cannot resist the temptation to add a few sentimental notes here. EUzabeth was the editor's grandmother, and her sisters were some of the sweetest persons we ever had the occasion to know. Of these chUdren of Samuel Parris, only Candas (who was not married ) , AUce, and Laura do not have Uving children in 2001.] . j 52 Journeys Through Jackson March - April 2001 Ky T h e D e s c e n d a n t s o f D a v i d M a t h i s c [Ed. I ' v e come to the conclusion your intentions were to drive your descendants insane. KJ You seem not to have existed before your marriage vows. Quite the magician you must have been, go ahead and take your bows. The gray hairs you have given me, so many frustrated moans and groans. And to make it a little more interesting, you had to marry a woman named Jones. A wife and 12 children mourned you when you left this earthly light. Why is it that you left no will behind that I've been able to sight? Wasn't there a family bible in which you recorded all these names? It must have been buried with you, that surely was your aim. You must have crawled out from under Judaculla Rock in 1839, I t ' s the only explanation I can see that seems to fit just fine. Or perhaps in North Carolina, an alien spaceship dropped you there. Maybe t h a t ' s why there is no record of you before that year. Dear great, great grandpa David, we all have our brick walls, But really, y o u ' v e really got me wondering if I exist at all. Many thanks to JCGS member Ella Mae (Moss) Morris for sharing this correspondence with tis. The correspondent lives in another section of the United States, but has traced her Moss lineage to Wilkes County, North Carolina. Her questions for Ella Mae are self-explanatory, but we include this letter because it is chock-full of genealogy, American history, and human circumstance. Our thanks to Mrs. Clark, also, for graciously allowing us to use her correspondence.] January 19,2001 Dear Ella Mae, Time surely flies. I have been bringing my family books up-to-date, and as I re-read your letter, I find that it has been eight years since we corresponded. We have had two more Milas Moss reunions. In 1996 we really worked hard on this one as the last Uving aunt celebrated her 80th birthday, we combined the two events. I started out looking up obituaries to complete some of the dates in my books, and ended up making a book to sell, and plotting the cemetery for a tour. We also toured all farms that our ancestors had homesteaded etc. Lots of work! I had sent you that as far back as we had was a Jesse J. Moss. Upon finding my great grandfather's obituary, I found his family had moved to Henry County, Indiana in 1837; but when researching there, we could only find a Jones Moss - we had no idea whether Jesse's middle name was Jones or not. However, we found an 1850 census, and Jones' wife, Dorcas, and two small children were Usted, and one of the children was my great grandfather, Milas. Another cousin found a WiU written in 1815 by a Thomas Moss in Surry County, North Carolina, leaving all his land to Jesse J.; then he found where this Thomas had sold some land and Jones & Dorcas Moss were witnesses. We have no dates as of yet. Also in Thomas' WiU, the other children were WiUiam Moss, John Moss, another Thomas Moss, Betsy Moss Jefferson, PoUy Moss Hicks, Zachariah Moss. They really nanied the offspring after our forefathers, as my grandfather, Lyman, had a brother named John and a brother named Thomas. I reaUy would like to learn the stories of why these families moved on, rather than just the lineage. Why would Jesse "Jones" Moss move, when he inherited aU his father's land, and the other three sons received 5 shillings each, Betsy received 5 shillings, and PoUy received a'bed and furniture. At first I thought maybe the Civil War, but this was in 1837. My great grandfather, Milas, moved to Delaware County, Iowa, and married there; then moved to Delphos, Ks; then homesteaded in Dewey County, OK. My grandfather, Lyman, was the first to homestead in Dewey County, OK in 1895. Last year this farm was given the Centennial farm award. My oldest brother's wife still Uves there. We went to Delphos, KS last year and we found more information - Milas had married again and had a daughter - this was not mentioned in his obituary.. ..The daughter went by the name of her half-brothers, Robison. 59 Journeys Through Jackson March - April 2001 [Ed. We omit one small paragraph here.] I am finding that you were right about the Moss name. We Uve in (the) northwestern part of KJ Oklahoma, and now that the Fiest Telephone Directory has come out, there are gobs of Mosses in (the) southwestern part of Oklahoma that we can find no ties to ours. Also my brother and family moved to Missouri for a whUe and two of his sons stiU Uve there - they were getting maU for a Moss, same first name and even found a cemetery that was more than half filled with Mosses. We went to AmariUo, TX for my brother-in-law's funeral - drove in the cemetery and guess what the first tombstone we saw, were Mosses....as I read your letter, I thought - well maybe, that grandfather WiUiam Moss of yours might be the brother of my great great grandfather. If time doesn't run out on us, we would stiU like to take the route, going backwards, and go to Delaware County, Iowa; Henry County, Indiana and on to North Carolina. Jesse Jones had several chUdren - what happened to them? Would love to hear from you, if you have the time. There were 12 of us children and only four are still Uving - two girls and two boys - .. .Our generation wiU be a memory before long. Don't know if any of our offspring will care about aU the history I have kept or not - of course, when you're young these things don't mean as much as they do later on. Again, I appreciated the time and the answers to my questions in 1992. Isl Christine Christine Moss Clark [Notes from Ella Mae Moss Morris] The WiUiam Moss (in Thomas Moss' wiU) was not the WiUiam Henry Moss that moved to South Carolina prior to 1810 when his eldest son MUton was born. This WUUam Henry Moss' father Henry Moss must have lived in the part of Surry County that became Wilkes County because his son WUUam Henry was born in Wilkes County in 1780. This was only two years after Wilkes County was formed. A deed to Henry Moss was recorded in Surry County in the period between 1784 and 1789. In the early years of the country, land was cheap in the areas that were open to settlement. When (the land in Jackson County) was opened to white settlers, the land was sold by the state for as Uttle as $5.00 for a 100 acres. WiUiam Henry Moss bought 400 acres for $20.00 in Macon County. This became part of Jackson County in 1851. Some of the prime river bottom land sold for more. Most sold for $10.00 for 100 acres. Since Jackson County is mostly mountainous, there was not too much of this type of land. Surry County land records start in 1770. Register of Deeds: 336 - 401 - 8150 Wilkes County land records start in 1778. Register of Deeds: 336 - 651 - 7351 [Ed. WhUe these two men (Thomas and Henry) obviously were not the same person, one wonders if another generation or so backward would reveal a common ancestor.] 60 'KJ KJ Journeys Through Jackson March - April 2001 T h e D e s c e n d a n t s o f S a m u e l M c C a l l Ky I [Ed. [1] (see children above) Ky 64 Journeys Through Jackson March - April 2001 Ky Ky Ky T h e F i r s t T e n Y e a r s By Ruth Shuler In February 1991 a group of 15 people gathered to discuss the possible pubUcation of a heritage book for Jackson County. From that meeting has come the organization we know today as the Jackson County Genealogical Society, Inc. In March 1991 the group decided that there should be an organization to sponsor not only the heritage book, but to encourage and enable genealogical pursuits in and about Jackson County. The accomplishments of this first ten years bear out the foresight that created our Society. From an original group of 15, membership in the Society has grown steadily. The charter membership period extended through June 30, 19991, and there were 61 of that original group. Of that number, 33 still belong to the Society, and four are deceased. The membership is based mainly in two states: North Carolina and Washington. However, the 2000 membership roU listed 26 states and one foreign country. Agewise, the membership has ranged from early 20's to centenarians. Some of our most active members are octogenarians who enliven our meetings and who are always willing to help when called upon. For the year 2000, the membership reached a new high with 260 members Usted, along with another 25 exchanges and gifts. The Society was fortunate to obtain its office space at the beginning of 1999. Sylva businessman Kole Clapsaddle renovated the former Walker's Cleaners building at the intersection of Highways 19-23 and 107, and the Society became one of his tenants. Having a visible presence in the community has made the Society more accessible to the general pubUc, and the office provides space for the monthly meetings. A main purpose of the Society has always been to make genealogical materials avaUable for study and research. The Society's Ubrary grows almost daUy and now encompasses more than 800 volumes along with some 25 periodicals. There is a family file as weU as numerous famUy notebooks and other misceUaneous data. In 2000 the Society received a coUection of some 375 volumes from Mrs. Hazel W. Barker, which added greatly to the Ubrary holdings. The Society has published a number of volumes that pertain to Jackson County. Beginning in July, 1991, the newsletter Journeys Through Jackson came into being and was first pubUshed monthly, later changing to a semi-monthly pubUcation. Jackson County Heritage, Volume 1 was received in October, 1992, and the original shipment of 1600 volumes sold out in seven weeks. A second printing also sold out in a short time. A third printing has just been done and is selling briskly. Jackson County Heritage, Volume II. Was pubUshed in December 2000, and a few copies are still avaUable. In 1997, the Society published Docket Book Jackson County Superior Court 1866 - 1896. This book, abstracted from the original records by Rick FrizzeU, received the North Carolina Genealogical Society's Award for ExceUence in PubUsbing in 1998. In 1998, the Society pubUshed The Cemeteries of Jackson County, information on the more than 230 cemeteries located within the county. This book, now in its third printing, continues to be a major resource for Jackson County genealogical research. In August 2000, the Society hosted the quarterly meeting of the Officers and Board of Directors of the North Carolina Genealogical Society. 65 Journeys Through Jackson March - April 2001 The Society benefits from the endowment of two annual awards. The Robert Lee and DrucUla Holden Award is presented to a person whose distinguished service, including publications, has enhanced the pursuit of genealogy. Instituted in 1995 by Mary Katherine Kj SherriU Lowder and Nancy SherriU Wilson, it honors their maternal grandparents. The Daniel Washington Deitz Memorial Award, in honor of a beloved charter member of the Society, was estabUshed in 2000 by Ila Rae Deitz and Bessie Alice Deitz in memory of their youngest brother, and is given to a person who has provided distinguished service to the Jackson County Genealogical Society. These awards are funded in perpetuity. In 1998 Kirk Stephens took the Society into cyberspace with the development of a Society Web site. The site has brought exposure to the Society that was never dreamed of in 1991. AU of these accompUshments would not be possible without the people, and this is the real story of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. Of the 15 persons who founded the original group, 11 are still members and have held numerous leadership positions. Hie persons who have served as officers over the past ten years have made valuable contributions, and have served weU. The members in general have worked diUgently to compUe the Society's pubUcations, and their submissions for the newsletter provide a rich cross-section of famUy research, priceless photographs, and church, Bible, and official pubUc records. The volunteers who keep the office open make possible the Society's presence in the community. Every member's contributions are vital, but there are a few people whose service merits special attention. The development and maintenance of the Society's library is a job that requires specialized knowledge and is time-consuming. Dorris DUls Beck has devoted many hours to the Society's Ubrary and maintains it in exceUent fashion. She has also found time to serve as an *y officer, as co-chair of the Family History section of the first heritage book, and as co-chair of the second heritage book. Her dedication to the Society is unswerving, and we appreciate her. The editorship of Journeys is another task that requires hours and hours of dedicated work. Larry Crawford has taken us from a ten-page monthly newsletter to a thirty-four page pubUcation, complete with pictures and interesting articles and information. His dedication, too, is absolute, and we are thankful for his devotion. The field work necessary to accompUsh the cemetery book was done by many persons, but two of them deserve special acknowledgement. BiU Crawford and Mack Sutton spent many long, hot hours searching for small family cemeteries, listing information from headstones, and making sure that all the cemeteries in the county were listed. The success of this book is due in no small part to their efforts, and we are grateful. So as the Society looks ahead to the next ten years, it is expedient to look back at the first ten. If the Society continues its advance, we can look ahead to 500 members in 2011, the pubUcation of several more books, and the.expansion of our Ubrary. This wiU be a venture that requires the best talents of all of us working together, and I am confident that our membership wiU rise to the occasion. Working with this group has been one of my most pleasurable experiences, and I look forward to the next decade of progress.
