Members and non-members are invited to submit genealogical materials for publication, with the understanding that the editor reserves the right to edit these materials for genealogical content, clarity, or taste. The Society assumes no responsibility for errors of fact that may be contained in submissions, and except where noted, the opinions expressed are not those of the editor or of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. The Society accepts no advertising for this publication except for notices for other non-profit groups. From the Editor We finish another successful year in the Society, and while we have some obstacles to overcome, we have no doubt that those barriers will be surmounted. We would like to see our membership increase, and we are always open to suggestion about improvement of this publication. We doubt seriously if anyone can improve on our programs, and we thank James and Bobby for their work. We are also grateful for the spirit of cooperation we find throughout the membership of JCGS. Inside this time, see the conclusions of the two family descendancies that we have featured...Betty Queen Monteith concludes the Wilds with a John Jacob Wild fgr, and Betty Cope Andrews has a nice touch with the conclusion of the Gribble descendants - a pedigree chart of her mother. Ruth Shuler gives us an outstanding summary of her principal genealogical interest, Dorris Beck delineates her Dills folks for us, and as always, we have wonderful pictures and official records for you to peruse. Thanks to all for their contributions. We trust that you will have the very finest holiday ever. Merry Christmas. We enjoyed getting to know Carl as he would go from Pennsylvania to Florida in the cold weather, then reverse that pattern in the spring. Recently he had moved to Otto in Macon County. Carl was always generous to the Society, and he was particularly adept at finding old photographs, then sharing them with us. Carl was connected to the Sutton and Buchanan families of Jackson County, and he would fill notebooks with pictures and data of these families and others. He would even share a political opinion or two with us. We shall miss him, and we offer our sincere sympathy to his family. <W P l e a s e u s e t h e f o r m o n t h e i n s i d e b a c k c o v e r to r e n e w y o u r m e m b e r s h i p f o r 2 0 0 7 . Thomas of Toot Hollow Road in Bryson City. The graduates shown here (with one identification short in each row) are (1-r, front row): Lillian Banks, Peggie Burford, Rose Garrett, Edna Price, Elizabeth Brown, Ruby Solesbee, and Hattie Grace Sherrill. On the second row are (1-r) Belle Monteith, Harold Grindstaff, Carl Corbin, Robert Sisk, Richard Sutton, Irvin Smith, and Flonnie Monteith. The mascot in front, with a hairdo she had fashioned for herself, was Mary Catherine Monteith. BeUe Monteith (Thomas) was Robert Thomas's mother. 150 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2006 L , J C G S P h o t o A l b u m < w ^^VtSu^^V1 fa i-*. i ii, ii JV.T.,', i-i ii-<ininiifM iminr i"iuiin"iiijaill,*.T*li''* 1 Above, proof that some of the Monteiths were good Democrats. Actually, the photograph above, also shared by "Bob" Thomas, shows his grandfather Ellis Chastain Monteith with "Prince." The political statement above is a n allusion to the continual good-natured sparring between your editor and his cousin, JCGS VP James Monteith, who secured these pictures from Thomas. 151 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2006 J C G S P h o t o A l b u m K J KJ Hundreds of people will remember with fondness Mrs. Margie Shuler Hughes, who taught elementary grades at Wesser Creek, Deep Creek, BushneU, Webster, and for 24 years at Sylva Elementary. She was the wife of Glenn Hughes, who was Register of Deeds in Jackson County for many years. Above, this fine old photograph shows Mrs. Hughes' father, James Jasper Shuler (on the right) at his market in Bryson City. Most of us can remember the stores wherein we entered, asked for what we wished, and the proprietor or his helper would retrieve the items for us. Photo submitted by Mrs. Hughes' daughter, JCGS member Linda Hughes Collins. The following is the work of JCGS member Ruth Shuler, who submits it for publication.] This article wiU summarize some twenty years' research on my fourth-great- grandparents, William and Charity Jennings Cockerham. Articles have been published at intervals during t h e s e years in the heritage books and genealogical journals of Jackson, Swain, and Macon counties. S o o n after the treaty of 1819 in which the Cherokee lands were ceded to the s t a t e of North Carolina, William Cockerham purchased a land grant covering some 200 a c r e s in Haywood County o n which he made four yearly payments. The last payment w a s made in 1823, and the youngest s o n of t h e family w a s born that same year. Sometime in 1824 the family moved from Surry County NC t o their new home in southwestern North Carolina, living first ln Haywood, then Macon, and finally Jackson County, all on the same property which lay on the banks of the Tuckaseigee River near present-day Wilmot The 1820 Federal c e n s u s of Surry-County NC, Captain Winfrey's District l i s t s a WHIiam Cockerham, a g e 45, and wife, a g e 26-45, along with s i x males.and two females. This appears t o be the family of William and Charity Jennings Cockerham. Three of the males were a g e s 10-16, and three were ten or younger, while o n e female w a s younger than 10 and the other, 10-16. As w e shall s e e later in this document two of the older boys were J e s s e Chandler and Daniel Stewart ^ s while two of the younger boys would be John Burch and Joel. The female under 10 would be Elizabeth. Was there another daughter w h o never came to Jackson County? We learned from William's will that there w a s a s o n named James, s o he probably i s o n e of the three older boys. The c e n s u s record indicated that there were five farmers in t h e household. Until 1850, Federal c e n s u s records listed only the name of the head of household; prior t o that time, other members were listed in a g e brackets, making it difficult to identify specific people. In the following p a g e s w e will attempt to identify the s o n s of William Cockerham and update t h e information that h a s b e en located on each of them, a s well a s their s i s t e r Elizabeth. It should b e noted t h at the surnames Cockerham, Cochran, Cochram, and other variations were u s ed interchangeably, with t h e spelling reflecting only t h e interpretation placed o n it by the writer. In 1835 there w a s a Congressional election in North Carolina; fortunately, the poll books were preserved. Charles David Biddix edited t h e s e documents i n to a volume entitled 1835 Congressional Poll Book, where he quoted the following statement "At an election held at the precinct of Shoal creek, in the county of Haywood, N. C. for the purpose of electing a member t o the next Congress of t he United States, for the 12* Congressional district of North Carolina, o n the 13t h o f August 1835." Among the list of voters in that county were Daniel Cockerham, Thomas Cockerham, J e s s e Cockerham, and James Cockerham. The Shoal Creek C , precinct w a s directly a c r o s s t h e Tuckaseigee River, which divided Haywood a nd ^"^ Macon counties until 1851, from William Cockerham's home. William Cochran voted in Deep Creek precinct of Macon County and w a s one of the e l e c t i on Judges. There w a s a l s o a voter named J e s s e Cochran In Deep Creek. In M a c o n 's 171 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2006 Savannah precinct John Cochran was listed, and in Macon's Valley River precinct the name of James Cochram appears. Other Cockerham families also lived in , Macon County; John voted in Franklin. From the voters thus listed we have v— tentatively identified the sons of William: Jesse, Daniel, James, and Thomas in Shoal Creek, John Burch in Savannah, and William himself in Deep Creek. Alfred Newton a t age 12 was too young to vote. The following paragraphs provide some insight on each of the children of William and Charity. Jesse Chandler Cockerham - On an Ancestry.com posting by Michael Oneill, there is a pedigree chart on a Jesse Chandler Cockerham listing his parents a s William and Charity and showing birth date of 19 Mar 1802 in Surry Co NC; marriage to Tennessee Claiborn Martin 26 Aug 1827 in NC; and death date of 23 Sep 1851 in Platte Co MO. One of Jesse's daughters, listed as having been born in Haywood County NC in 1840, is the ancestress of Oneill. From earlier work on Haywood County land records ft had been apparent that Jesse left western North Carolina around 1844. In an attempt to validate the Oneill data, I searched the 1850 census for Missouri and, in Buchanan County, Bloomington township, found this listing: Jesse C. Cockerham, 48, farmer, bom NC; Tennessee, 48, b NC; Sally, 21; Elizabeth, 20; William 18; Charity, 16; Malinda, 14; Catherine, 12; Jane, 10; Winford, 8; Kesiah, 4. Ail the children had been bom in NC except Kesiah, who was listed as being born in MO. That would corroborate the time of Jesse's move to Missouri. Missouri marriage records show Elizabeth having married John Ussary 23 Jan 1847; Martha J(ane), Joseph Pennock 23 Nov 1858; Charity Virginia, Felix victor Leroy Cormant 31 Oct 1852; and Sarah C , John S. Burgess 9 Oct 1853. The 1860 Platte County MO census lists Tennessee Cockram, b NC; Kate, 20; Winny, 16; and Kesiah, 14. At the Allen County Public KJ Library in Fort Wayne, IN, a query was found stating that Elizabeth had died in 1857, leaving three children: Laura Cathern b 1848, Galen Eugenia b 1855, Claudeas b 1857. in the 1860 census these children and their father John Ussary were shown in the home of his mother, Phebe Ussary, and the Cormant Burgess, and Pennock families are located. I have been able to trace only the Pennock family later than 1860. They lived in Leavenworth, KS, which is directly across the Missouri River from Buchanan and Platte counties, and are found in the censuses there until 1900 when they appear in the Woods County census, Oklahoma Territory. By 1910 they had returned to Kansas and probably lived there until they died. Telephone contact was made with the Oneill family but promised information was never received. Daniel Stewart Cockerham - An article entitled "And A Wall Came Tumbling Down" in the Sept-Oct 1998 issue of "Journeys Through Jackson" told the story of the move of this family from North Carolina to Polk County, Iowa, in 1847 and listed genealogical data. A visit to Pine Hill Cemetery, Saylorville township, north of Des Moines, in the summer of 2006 resulted in photographs of the final resting place of Daniel Stewart, who died in 1861, and several members of his family. A particularly poignant epitaph was found on the tombstone of son Thomas, who killed himself in 1888: it read "Tired of Life." Our visit to this large city cemetery was especially fortuitous. The attendant directed us to the oldest section of the cemetery and told us that he had no index as to where the actual graves were located and we would just have to search for them. This family endured great tragedy, with one son dying in the Civil War, another committing suicide, and still another murdering his wife and then killing himself. They apparently also lost a young daughter, Elizabeth, as I have found no record of her after 1850. James (Jasper) Cockerham - The will of William Cockerham, written in 1861, mentions "the living children of my son James-John, William, James, Margarette, and others" as nejtt of kin and heirs-at-law and notes that they reside "outside the limits of this state." In Macon County there is an estate record for James J. Cockerham in 1849. Whether this is William's son is not definite, but in Haywood County land records is a reference' to William and James Jasper Cockerham as chainbearers. In an attempt to locate these children, I turned again to the 1850 census on Ancestry.com and found, in Lauderdale County, Alabama, this listing: Cockram, Francis (female), age 45; Jasper, 23; Charity, 19; Margarette, 18; William, 16; John, 12; James, 11; Elizabeth, 9; Fanny, 7; and Jefferson, 5. the last two children were bom in Tennessee; all the others, including the mother, were bom in North Carolina. Is this our James Cockerham's family? With the, names quoted in William's will as James' chUdren and the names Jasper and Charity, I have a strong inclination to say yes. But at this point there is no documentation and until something else surfaces, it is simply a piece of the puzzle that is not quite clear. Joel Cockerham - Yourig Joel had drowned in 1831 at the age of 14 when he followed a deer into the Tuckaseigee River. His death notice was sent to the WNC Spectator in Rutherfordton, leading to speculation that family might have lived in that area. John Burch Cockerham - John Burch lived in the Savannah area of Jackson County and he and his wife, Delphia C. Hall, had seven known children, one of whom is my second-great-grandmother. Their stories are delineated In Jackson County Heritage, Volumes I and II. John Burch died in early 1863 as a relatively young man, and his family's share Of William's estate was sold to William Conley for either one hundred'or one thousand dollars on 21 Jun 1867. Both amounts appear in the Jackson County court record of this transaction. Conley and his wife Elizabeth on the same day sold the same property to their son-in-law, B. H. Cathey, for one thousand dollars, so one can hope that Delphia Cockerham and her orphan children received the larger amount for their 54 acres of William's estate. Elizabeth Cockerham - The only known daughter of William and Charity Cockerham married first John Starnes. In an unusual circumstance for that era, the marriage ended in divorce granted by die North Carolina legislature in 1835; to wit: Starnes Divorce Proceedings (General Assembly Session Records, 1835, Senate Bills Nov. 25 - Dec. 15) 175 Journeys Through Jackson Fail 2006 Be It enacted by the General Assembly of the State of North Carolina, ^_j and it Is hereby enacted by the authority of the same; that Elizabeth M. Elizabeth and John Starnes had one daughter, Charity Jane Starnes. She married Thomas Belew Stalcup and they lived in Cherokee County NC. Jane is buried there in the Old Martin's Creek Cemetery and has many descendants still living in that area. Elizabeth later married William Hollen Conley and had 12 more children. According to an article in Swain County Heritage, about 1880 Elizabeth left Conley and went to Oceana, West Virginia, with her son Taylor, where she died about 1883. Her son, William Dee, lived there and was said to have been a teacher for many years. William died in 1893, leaving this will: Wilt of W. D. Conley of Sun Hill I, W. D. Articles on this family appear in Jackson County Heritage. Thomas Cockerham - If this was indeed one of William's sons, he has been elusive. A Thomas Cochran appeared in the Cherokee County censuses of 1850 and 1860, but he indicated birthplace as Rutherford County. While he may be the child of William, no further information has been found on him. After the death of William, there was an extended legal battle over the distribution of his estate. Jackson County court records from 1862 until 1893 detail various land transactions involved in the settlement several of which mention William Bumgarner. The property today is still in the hands of Bumgarner descendants, and the cemetery there is called the Bumgarner Cemetery, it is interesting to note that the graveyard is referred to in a deed in 1879, before the Bumgarners acquired the property. A sad commentary to the saga of the Cockerham sons is that at least five of William's sons predeceased him—Jesse, Daniel, Joel, James, and John. In t he Information I have located, only Alfred Newton and Elizabeth lived longer than their parents. ^J 178 Journeys Through Jackson Fall 2006 < w 1 9 7 2 D e a t h C e r t i f i c a t e s o f J a c k s o n C o u n t y P e r s o n s B o r n P r i o r t o 1 9 00 L , L , [Key to reading the following: Name of deceased; marital status; date of birth; place of birth; 1972 date of death; place of death; father's name; mother's name; informant; informant's address; cemetery. A potpourri of genealogical tidbits, questions, comments, opinions, nonsense, and whatever else becomes available.] It might be possible to come up with a better way to spend some genealogical time, but we doubt it. Above, the result of a Bill Crawford - sponsored short hike through the woods to the old Beck Cemetery on Beck Branch in the Qualla community, where Sam Beck was able to take the above photograph of his great - great grandfather's stone. The stone was placed there some years ago by the late Daniel Deitz. We had a good time at the November meeting of the Society, where Victoria Casey McDonald spoke of (especially) the Black religious experience in Jackson County. L C Above, a picture shared by WCU Special Collections head George FrizzeU, who recently spoke at a Society meeting. We see some structures that are still standing...it appears that the Nichols house was under construction at the time. Notice the old building of First Baptist Church just below the Nichols house. First Methodist Church is in the right foreground (we believe in its present location), and the small white building, partly visible in the picture behind the Nichols house, might be the old structure of S t John's Episcopal Church. Find the College Hill area, and notice the fields stretching u p the bill to the left of the road. Do yon see the old Sylva School, which sat where the city p a r k is now? Civil War Letter From Benjamin Nicholson Queen United States Military Prison Johnsons Island, Ohio October 9th 1864 Mrs Mary C Queen Dear wife this will inform you that I am in common health and I hope this will find you and children enjoying good health. It has been three months since I received a line from you. I received a few lines from father about ten days ago which I have answered; also I received a letter from Brother A.H. he is at Petersburg, VA and was in the care of the doctor. He stated that he had jaundice. The health of the boys at Camp Douglas was better than it has formally been at last account The health of this prison is very good at present; Capt Hooper and Lieut Parker are well; we received a letter from Lieut Brown a few days ago he is at Fort Delaware and in good health, the weather has been disagreeably cold for severl days. About fifty sick left hear a few days ago for exchange; I have some hopes that there will be a general exchang soon; I would be very glad to be released from this loathsome place. Give my love to all the relatives and friends; tell Alonzo and Askew that I expect to come home some of these days, and I want them to learn fast for I will fetch them new books; I wish you to write often, give me all the news. Yours truly, Lieut B.N. Queen 28 lines on common letter paper is all I am aUowed to receive in one letter [Ed. Benjamin Nicholson Queen went on to become a well-known Baptist Minister in Jackson County. His wife, to whom the above letter was written, was formerly Mary Catherine Carson, daughter of William and Lydia Crawford Carson. We spotlighted Mary Catherine's brother Elias Carson in our Spring 2006 issue. B.N.
