President's Message ISC* V Hello again I I think spring h^_J finally sprung. Old man winter held on tight for quite some time until the sunshine was able to drive him away. However, we always have to keep in mind that it was only two years ago this past March that we had the blissard. Z enjoyed it like most other students for Z didn't have to go to school. Z wouldn't mind to see a snow of that magnitude again. 1995 Officers President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Publications Chair Brian McMahan Helen Cable Vance Dorris Dills Beck David Prissell Ruth Crawford Shuler Calendar She ball seems to be rolling better each day. Me are continuing to work on acquiring a room at the old court house. Helen is working on several good programs for this year. Zf anyone has ideas for a program, please contact Helen. Z really enjoyed Robert Medford's program for our March meeting. Z feel that he is doing genealogists a great service by the publication of his books. He was very generous in donating to us "that big blue book." It will be a big asset to us. Zf anyone would like t "** borrow it or any of the other material that our society receives, please let me know. Don't forget the various spring workshops put on by the other societies in our neighboring counties. Most of them require prior registration and all of them seem to be good programs. The Jackson County Genealogical Society meets regularly on the second Thursday of each month. Good luck in your research! ON YOUR I00TH BIRTHDAY This issue of Journeys Through Jackson is dedicated to Our faithful member Eva Phillips Ensley, who will celebrate her 100th birthday on April 18,1995. Mrs. Ensley, known familiarly as "Aunt Evie" or "Nannie Ensley," was honored with a birthday party on April 9 at which numerous family members and friends gathered to pay tribute to her. She is an extraordinary person whose sense of humor is wonderful. Someone told me that she went to the recent motorcycle rally held in Jackson County, but when I asked her if she had ridden any motorcycles, she said, "No, not lately." She tends her flowers, cooks, does needlework, and keeps life lively for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. She also reads carefully each issue of Journeys Through Jackson. Born April 18, 1895, to Daniel and Isabella Phillips, she has lived her entire life in the Cane Creek section of Cullowhee community. Her husband, Oscar Ensley, died several years ago, and she lives with a daughter, Ruth Ensley Bryson. Few organizations have the good fortune to mark a centennial celebration for a member. Jackson County Genealogical Society is indeed proud to say, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Mrs. Ensley." We wish for you many more happy years! You are an inspiration to all of us. 27 ELLA BLANTON SHULER (Gene McGinnis wrote about Mrs. Shuler and sent copies of newspaper articles written on her birthdays from the time she was 100 until she was 107. She must have been a fascinating person, as is shown by the quotes excerpted below.) • j Ellender (Ella) Blanton, third child of Marcus L. Blanton and Mary Elizabeth Ward, was born Friday, 24 March 1876, in the Scotts Creek community of Jackson County. At age 18, in 1892, Ella married David Manuel Shuler, born 1869. Mr. Shuler died in 1953. Their children were (1) Sarah Belle, b 1895, married Claude Riddle, four children; (2) Frank, b 1896; (3) Cora E., b 1898, married Rufus Haywood Johnson, four children; (4) James Gordon, b 1901; (5) Vennie Mae, b 1905; (6) Carl J. b 1908. The two youngest children died as infants. From the Sylva Herald of April 1, 1976: "Mrs. Shuler is still very active for her age (100) and attributed her long life to the scripture in the Bible 'Children obey your parents in all things'." From the Sylva Herald of March 29, 1979: "The world has experienced dramatic changes during the 103 years that Mrs. Shuler has lived. Her lifetime has seen the invention of the automobile, electric lights, the telephone, radio, television, the airplane, and even spaceships and satellites. She thinks most of such changes are good, although she noted that some can be dangerous-such as cars and airplanes." From the Asheville Citizen of March 27, 1981: "Ella Shuler, who celebrated her 105th birthday this week, says if you'll plant your garden by the signs of the moon you won't go wrong...She learned about the signs from her mother and father and her grandmother. To make a good garden, they told her, you had to plant all root crops in the dark of the moon and those that bore above ground in the light of the moon." From the Asheville Citizen of April 5, 1981: "'My daddy,' she said, emphasizing each word, 'was a . blockader...Folks said he made the best whiskey a body ever tasted. He lived to be 96 years old and he blockaded most ^-^ of his life.' When her father started out making whiskey, anybody could operate a still legally if they paid the government an excise tax on each gallon they produced. But like many another mountain man whose only means of making enough money to pay their property taxes was their little copper still, he refused to pay the excise tax which was 50 cents a gallon in 1868 and increased to 90 cents in 1875, a year before Ella Shuler was bom. 'I never did know nothing about how he made whiskey. I still don't know nothing about the operation of it. I know they always said he made good likker. That's what they always said."' From the Asheville Citizen of March 25, 1983: "Her father raised and sheared sheep and her mother wove all their clothes from the wool. The light in their log house came from the hearthfire and from homemade candles which she learned to run as a child. Her father had a little gristmill where he ground the com they raised for their meal to make bread. They buried their potatoes in a hill for winter use. And they strung up their onions and peppers. In those years they raised a lot of sweet potatoes which sometimes she and her mother turned into sweet 'tater butter. And they made apple butter and peach butter and pumpkin butter which they kept in crocks. Her father always bleached peaches every year. Ella Shuler will tell you that until she was in her 80s she was a hard worker and that as long as she could get out and go she was out helping and caring for others..- For the past five years she has been a resident of Mountain View Manor. Until a few months ago she served as a resident volunteer, visiting room-bound patients once a week. 'I'm having to slow up some,' she said, 'not as active as I was.' But you'd never know it to look at her. Ella Shuler carries her 1Q7 years well." Ellender Blanton Shuler died Saturday, 8 April 1984 in Swain Co, at the age of 108 years, 13 days. 28 COMPANY F, 29TH REGIMENT, N. C. TROOPS U (During the Civil War North Carolina furnished large numbers of men for the Confederate cause, as well as a smaller number of men who fought for the Union. The mountain region sent its share of men into battle, and several of those companies were composed of Jackson County men. A series of books entitled North Carolina Troops. 1861-1865: A Roster, published by the Division of Archives and History, Raleigh, North Carolina, was begun in 1961 and is an effort to provide the names arid service records of North Carolinians who served in this war. The projected number of books was thirteen; at mis time, twelve volumes have been published. The following material is abstracted from Volume Eight, Infantry.)
