  • Tifiidiri Catamount Cheerleaders Announce 99-2000Squad by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor Back in early February, the Western Carolina University cheerleading squad held open try- outs. Head coach of the WCU Cheerleaders, Charity Irvin, has determined her co-ed squad and created an all-female squad for the upcoming 1999-2000 seasons. "I'm very confident about the coed squad that we have because I've worked with most of them for this year," commented Irvin. She is also excited about having a second squad to work with. With the lack of an official assistant coach, Irvin has looked to her squad for assistance. Students Vance Henry and Kim Cherry will serve both as captains, coaches and, student assistant. Members of the co-ed Gold Squad, in addition to Henry and Cherry, are as follows: Scott Cordell, Leslie Hunnicutt, Mark Reed, Bridgette Edelson, Jessica Norton, Johnny Adams, Sarah Parker, Kevin Hale, and Angie Rice. So, since I kept most of last year's squad, I third one talked it over with the athletics department latter, the and created the squad," explained Irvin. football g: So, what's in store for next year's cheerleading squad? "We are going to try and go more charity/community work outside of cheering. We are also looking to simplify some of our cheers and use more signs to try and get more crowd participation," said Irvin. "The primary goal of the WCU cheerleaders is to try and get the crowd to cheer for the team. You could ask any athlete and they would say that it helps to have the crowd behind them to build up their energy," commented Irvin. The WCU cheerleaders will also work to go to the Universal Cheerleading Association competitions. To qualify, the squad must send in three tapes; one with two different cheers, one with a minute and thirty seconds of extraordinary stunts, and the of crowd participation.
