Well. I've received what 1 wanted. The work is pouring in from all directions. Projects, papers, tests, it's never ending. And to top it all off, I've got Senior-itis! LM P is moving right along. Unfortunately, we lost a few committee members, but reinforcements are on their way. The upcoming events should prove to be very interesting and entertaining. One question that seems to be popping up everywhere is "concerts". As you know, last semester we did a poll on the following bands: Hall & Oates, The Kinks, and Kool and the Gang. After further inquiries were made into the possibility of getting one of the bands to perform here, we found thev were all out of reach. Hall & Oates has raised their concert price to around $35,000. Kool and the Gang are touring out of the country. The Kinks are available only one date, lo our dismay, the date was March II, the day we leave for Spring Break. Therefore, at this point these three bands are out of the picture. But we haven't given up hope. With luck, the first show will be around March and possibly before then. From Harlem To Cullowhee The best songs from the nation's top black musicals will be heard in Cullowhee Monday evening, Jan. 31, as Atlantis Productions presents "From Harlem to Broadway: The Black Musical" on the campus of Western Carolina University. The fully staged and costumed production, featuring a cast of live young black performers, includes music from such classics as "Blackbirds of 1928," "Porgy and Bess." "Cabin in the Sky," "Purlie" and "The Wiz." Beginning with "Shuffle Along," the first all-black Broadway musical by Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle, "From Harlem to Broadway" tells the story of the rise of black performers and black musicals through the words and music of such great hits as "I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby,""Doin'the New Low Down," "Summertime," "A Whole Lotta Sunshine," "So Little Time" and "Ease on Down the Road." One of the major performers in the show is Rob Cleveland, a graduate of Emory University and a former writer and performer for the "Tush Show" on Ted Turner's satellite station, WTBS. An accomplished actor, Cleveland has appeared with the Just Us Theatre, the Emory Professional Summer Theatre and the Flat Rock Playhouse. Michael Mimbs arranged the music for the production, which is under the supervision of Fergus Currie and Hank Bevis, Gene Ericson designed costumes and properties. Produced by Atlantis Productions, known for their national touring productions of "An Evening with Rodgers and Hammerstein" and "The Best of Broadway," "From Harlem to Broadway" will be performed on the WCU campus at 7 p.m. in Hoey Auditorium. Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for children under 12 and free to WCU students with valid identification cards. For ticket information, call 227-7234. As you know, concerts aren't the only thing LMP sponsors. So far the Outdoors Committee. Special Events Committee and the Films Committee are ready to go- Outdoors' Winter Events include; Friday Night Skiing at Cataloochee, Skiingat Sugar Mountain, Snow Shoe and Backpacking. Spring brings a sailing trip to the Keys, Raft and Canoe trips. Kayaking trips, a Bike Race. Backpacking and finishing up with a hiking trip to the Grand Canyon. The movies this semester are "looking good." Dragonslayer, THX 1138, Stripes, Absence of Malice, Raiders, and many other excellent films can offer Cullowheeans something to do on Friday nights. If you need a schedule of the upcoming films, come by the LMP office and pick up a poster. Special Events has scheduled a Billiards Tournament, which was Tuesday night, a Spades Tournament to be conducted throughout the dorms. Casino Night and a mini-movie series. rhese are just a sample of the events IMP has scheduled for this semester. There should be something for everyone. Keep a lookout for ads and posters filling you in on what's coming up in the next lew weeks In the meantime, we hope the semester gets off to a good start and classes go well. At I. MP we will try to keep you entertained throughout the week.
