PAGE 6/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/FEBRUARY 23, 1978 WCU plays Elon today in first round action Lady Cats are top - seeded bv STEVE SURLES Staff Writer The 77-78 season has been the best ever for the WCU women's basketball team. The Lady Cats have rolled through a 19-5 regular season and are the top-seeded club in the upcoming NCAIAW state Division II tournament February 23-25 at Mars Hill College. For the benefit of the students here at WCU, the Western Carolinian presents the Lady Cats. Jay ne Arledge - 5'fi guard, junior, Enka High School. Jayne is the leading scorer for the Ladv Cats with an 18.5 points per game average. She leads the club in field goal percentage with 53.7 per cent, and also leads the club with 56 foul shots. A starter all three years. Jayne has been one of WCU's truly great women players. .lav ne was a high school all-state player as a senior al Enka and has been Division II All-State both years al Western. She loves ihe running style of ball that Coach Westmoreland employs al Wc I .laviii is a health and PE major and would like to teach and coach alter graduating. She comes from an athletic family as her father played semi-pro basketball. Beth Crisp - 5'9 wing, freshman, A.C. Reynolds High, Sheila Barker - 5't guard, sophomore, East Lincoln High .Denver, North Carolina|. Shi ila has rotated with Lenora Freeman this season at the starting guard position and has made a tremendous contribution to the success of the team. She is second on the team in assisis, along with a 2.4 scoring average. Sheila had a great career at East I incolii being named All-Conference, MVP, and All-Slate three years. Sheila also contributes to the club with her greal sense of humor. She is a health and PEmajor and would like to teach after graduating. Sheila lists her hobbies as sleeping and studying. Sweetie Burns - 6Tj post, junior, Mitchell County High |( amilla, Georgia|. Sweetie traiislered lo Western from Truett- McConnell after two great seasons at the Cleveland, Georgia school. Shi' is the third best rebounder on the squad this year with a 6.2 average and has contributed 5.9 points per game. Sweetie has the si/e and natural ability to be one of Western's very best players. She would like to go to graduate school in PE and coach and leach. Sweetie says this about this year's club: "This club has eleven all-stars, there are no special five, every one is good. 1 have the feeling that we're going all the vvav." Sweetie came to WCU because she loves the mountains and it is close to home. She likes to 'jive' around and listen to music, especially Natalie Cole and the Commodores. Beth Crisp - S'9 wing, freshman, A.C. KEy nobis High, Asheville. Beth has been a valuable contributor to the club this year with a 13.5 scoring average, secong best on the team, and a 7.8 rebounding mark that leads the Lady Cats. Beth also has a 76 per cent free throw shooting percentage. Beth had five games this year of 30 points or heller and has been in double figures in all but four games, she had 18 rebounds in a 92-41 win over Davidson. Beth was All-County and All-Conference in high school and performed in the NC East-West All-Star game last seaon. She has found the transition from high school to college ball not as great except, "Everyone is a lot better here. Playing with four great teammates is a lot of fun," Beth likes all sports and also likes to read. Her brother was MVP in Western North Carolina in 1972. Lenora Freeman - 5'5 guard, freshman, Westside High | Anderson, South Carolina|. Lenora is another one of (he great freshman players for the Lady Cats. She leads the club in assists from her point guard position, and also has a 9.0 scoring average. She has a verv impressive 46.7 shooting percentage lo go with her fine ball-handling abilities. All-Conference, and All-Area at Westside, she was MVP two years. Coach Westmoreland is Lenora's first female basketball coach. She gives credh to her brothers (all played at Westside), Coach Debbie Rogers of Anderson, and coaches Roberts ana Adams of Westside for teaching her the game. She credits her mother with being her best friend and inspiration. Lenora would like to travel after completing school, ami when not playing basketball she listens to jazz music. Friday and Saturday at Mars Hill College. Western posted an 11-1 Division II record this season with its only loss coming at Lenoir-Rhyne, 59-56. Ihe Lady Cats, coached by Betty Westmoreland, have been lop seeded for the upcoming state tourney after finishing as the runnersup last season. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University’s student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
