Here,as Payette Burnett expressed it,was the kingdom of the bears,with deer,coons,possums stitilii eds and squirrels in regiments,and pheasants,wild turkey and eagles in squadrons. A few years of projection would restore this plenty of the days of the pionerrs. No where is there a more congenial home for the gamest of all fish,the speckled trout. This is evidenced by the followong lines of a native poet: "Upon Black Mountains lofty heights It is quite cool amoet o' nights, An in her streams that run about Are fine large perch and many a trout". This magnificent productive country was act made for varmints* It was made to produce the highest types of enlightened men and women. It was designed for peaceful,prosperous homesteads,for fields of golden grain and the happy songs of reapers, Man was not made for the forests,but the forests were made for man. while this is true it would be reckless stupidity,negligence of the grossest kind,if some portion of this grand and pioturesque region be not preserved in its original,natural condition for the enjoyment and welfare of the people. There is only one feasible way to accomplish this and that is by government ownership . These large areas oan now be purchased at nominal sums. The timber alone, ewen at present prices is worth more than the prioe asked for the fee simple title.
