  • 89, has gone to pieces. He didn’t know me & had to put “birthplace unknown” on the death certificate. No will has been found, which is worrying her relatives & justifiably so, as Mr. Pat has no relatives, except two bachelor brothers. I know she did not want them to have her things which all came from her family. I know she had one some time ago, because she told me about it. Those interested feel, also justifiably, that he is in no condition to recognize a will if he saw one & might burn it up with other papers. I made a will, which is in the Bird’s bank box & a copy with my papers. It seemed a bit absurd, as the law would give to you children same as the will does but it seemed to be better to have the will, so there it is. Lucy is fixing 45 lbs of ham for the Grange, Jacksonville supper Sat. night. I don’t “belong” but am roped in to carve ham & butter rolls. Wish it was to be turkey instead of ham as I am more expert at that. Our Mr. Smiths at Atwaters is to have another turkey for Lucy for Christmas & found 3 big hams for her Grange supper. We are “tops” at Atwaters if not any other place. Some of the old clerks almost embrace us & the Wilcox boys — Mr. Atwater’s nephews who now run the business — do the same. It surely is “a grand & glorious feeling” to be so welcomed.
