  • N.J. State Hospital Marlboro, New Jersey Mar. 14, 1935 Dear Leonard, I have been thinking lately about papa’s novel. I have noticed that the Saturday Evening Post has been carrying several articles of late concerning the southern mountaineers, and I thought perhaps the time was ripe to try again to market it. The chief objection to it seems to have been the scenes of modern society. Would it be possible to cut these down so as almost to eliminate them, and could you, or Lucy, or both of you re-write what is left to make it more acceptable? I gather that the rest of the novel was good. I have never read it. I thought the since there seems to be at this time a reviving, though probably temporary, interest in the southern mountains, it might be opportune. What
