  • 700 Madison Ave., Grand Rapids, Mich. July 12,1919. Mr. Horace Kephart, Bryson City, JT.C. Dear Sir: Yesterday,after dipping into"Camping and Woodcraft" as I do occasionally when dead tired of all things citified, I began to wonder if you had any idea of the pleasure a city dweller, who has no opportunities for wilderness wandering, can get out of your camping books. You meant them primarily, I take it, for the instruction and use of those who wished to go and do likewise, not as a source of relaxation to a brain fagged individual. There are two of us whose lines lie in pleasant places, it is true! but each of us is possessed of a "wild man" who longs for the wilderness. He has to be pacified by hiking outside the city limits, exploring unknown roads and cutting across country for variety. When time or weariness will not permit of an actual hike, then we resort to you and an Abercrombie and Pitch catalog. We carefully select the clothes we should wear, decide for or against certain styles of tent, bedding etc., mentally lay the proper fire for^purpose for whxch it is needed and make believe we are really doing it. It does not take much in the way of imagination to have a perfectly splendid time. The queer part to me Is that the "grub" side of camping never seems to intrude itself—probably because I am so well fed anyway. Our jaunts of this imaginative sort are always alone
