Oct 6 Dearest mother and dad, well. I’ll write you again but I don’t know what to write. I may leave here today on a ship althou I don’t want to. I want fly at least to the coast. It only takes a couple of days on a ship takes 2 weeks. This is a nice place here. A big hospital and they are giving us inspections and treating the sick guys and getting our records strait. I eat to much and I’m getting fat as a bear, but it really good. Well they just came in and told me to get ready. I just came back from breakfast and I haven’t started getting my stuff together so I gotta close. Lots of love, Son Sam

A letter from Samuel Robert Owens to Frances Elvira Owens (1879-1965) and Steven J. Owens (1875-1964) with health and welfare updates. Samuel Robert Owens (1918-1995) was stationed at Cavite Naval Yard in the Philippines when the United States entered World War II. He was a member of the crew of the submarine tender USS Canopus (AS-9), which was actively involved in the defense of the Bataan peninsula until the fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942. The majority of the crew of USS Canopus, including Owens, were captured by the Japanese at Corregidor, and became prisoners of war. Owens remained a POW until the end of the war and received the Silver Star and Bronze Star for his service.
