  • November 18, 1946 Dear Mama, The enclosed is a flash-light shot that I took of the Keller family last week with poor results so far as Jane is concerned. I was so busy watching the baby to get her face with a smile that I paid no attention to the rest of the party. However I re-took the shot yesterday and if it is better will send you one. I’ll also get the G. O. Kephartssome [sic] day. I thought I had learned a lesson while our own children were growing up and would be more careful to get lots of pictures of the new generation but it seems to be just as hard as ever to find a time when it is convenient for everyone to pose. Well, maybe by the next generation---. We are at present in the throes of rebuilding the kitchen. The old sink has worn out and the women decided that now was the time to put in some more closets etc. so we are getting our kitchen face lift- ed. It will be the most elegant room in the house. But as Jane says that is not saying much. We have been in this house for 25 years next March. It certainly does not seem possible. Yet when you see the signs of wear and tear it seems more than possible. Jane and Ralph are still here and there is no sign yet that he will be moved out of Washington. They keep looking for a house of their own but they do not want to buy in view of the probability that he will be sent away before long and there are still no houses for rent. As far as I am concerned I want them to stay right here. I hate to have them go away when the children are small. Yet it will be just as hard when the children are bigger. I guess I just dont want them to go. Buddy and his family are probably here for keeps provided his business is good enough to make a living for him. He is giving full time now to a store out in Rockville. It really belongs to Mary Ann’s Brother-in-law but Buddy is going to get a GI loan to help him buy into the business. It is called the Rockville Supply Co. Originally it handled chiefly feed and hay but Buddy is branched out into hardware and other items. I hope he can make a go of it because it has always been his ambition to have a business of his own. There are a lot of pitfalls in retail businesses however and he might make a bad slip someday. I cant help him much because I know nothing about thatsort [sic] of thing there being very little Jewish blood in my ancestry. AIso I guess I have been tied to a steady salary so long that I would not take the chances that you have to in business. I’ve told Buddy, however, that as soon as I can retire I’ll do it and come to work for him as clark [sic] or something. So I’ll wind up as I started as a store clerk. Anyway I liked hardware better than groceries. Barbara is still in Hot Springs, Arkansas, hanging around waiting for the 60 days to pass so she can get the divorce. I still hate the idea but there simply was nothing else for her to do. She is staying with a family that seems to have taken quite a shine to her so she has no time to mope - not that Barbara was ever a moper. She is teaching in the High School part time to make a little money and pass the time. When she gets back she is going to stay for Christmas and then go to New York and enter Columbia for a Masters degree - if she can get in. Miss Mount, the head of the Home Econ. Dept. at Maryland is backing her so I guess she will make it. She wants to take Business Home Economics. That is certainly her forte if she has one. Anything that involves human relations
