August 28, 1945 Dear Sammy, I do hope you are where you can get this letter. We are hoping and praying for your safty, mom and dad practically live by the radio. There is so much I want to tell you guess I better wait till you come home. You have several nephews and neices to meet. My little boy is three years old. Dad says his like Fred and pets him to death. We call him Butch. In the morning he greets me with “Time to get up ole Gal!” We are all well - plenty to eat and mama has 25 frying chickens and the “fatted” calf waiting for you and Frank. A letter from Samuel's sister, Mary K. (Mary Kathryn Owens Gray), and his mother, Frances Elvira Owens to Samuel Owens about everyday life. Samuel Robert Owens (1918-1995) was stationed at Cavite Naval Yard in the Philippines when the United States entered World War II. He was a member of the crew of the submarine tender USS Canopus (AS-9), which was actively involved in the defense of the Bataan peninsula until the fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942. The majority of the crew of USS Canopus, including Owens, were captured by the Japanese at Corregidor, and became prisoners of war. Owens remained a POW until the end of the war and received the Silver Star and Bronze Star for his service.
