SEPTEMBER 7. 1978/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN PAGEa WCU tailback Mitchell Ray runs against ECU in the game at Greenville last weekend, as WCU dropped the contest 14-6. Ray follows in the footsteps of Wayne Tolleson who graduated last year. (Photo by Ray Porter) Explosive! Tennessee Tech tackles WCU Western Carolina will travel to Tennessee Tech in Cookville, Tennessee this Saturday to face an explosive offense and stringy defense. The Golden Eagles, who finished second in the Ohio Valley Conference last year with a 9-2-0 record, will enter the game with one loss to Nicholls State last week. Even though Tennessee Tech lost its opener, they are expected to finish high in the new Division l-AA. Fourteen starters have returned this vear from last year's team. At one point during the season last year, the Golden Eagles were ranked as high as third in the Division II. Tech's flanker. Craig Rolle is an Ail-American Candidate. He seems to catch everything thrown in his area. He will be assisted by runningback Cecil Fore and Kevin Tillman who provide strength and speed. Tech's head coach Don Wade will try to have his team gain the lead in the WCU-Tennessee Tech series which stands at 2-2-1. lech should be ranked as a very tough competitor. ellers [2 liUll-T'J lorist Flowers for All Occasions Wire Service Cut flowers Potted plants Hanging baskets Violets EastlSylva ShoppinglCenter 586-4047 Waters thinks WCU team is 'pretty good9 this year "We saw enough positive things to make us think that ibis is going to be a pretty good football team." said Coach Hob Waters ol Western after reviewing films Ol his train's 1-4 o season opening loss lo heavily favored lasl Carolina I nivoisilv in Grccnv ille last Saturday night. Waters began the task Monday ol trying to put together an effective offense to go along with an impressive defense for this weekend's trip to Cooke- villi-, 1 ennessee where his ( al.iniounls will again be a decided underdog when they face rennessee lech's awesome offensive machine, Western, a four touchdown underdog, played I ast Carolina on even terms through three quarters, much to the surprise of the record crowd of 31.251 in E< U's renovated Ficklen Stadium. The Pirates scored what proved to be the winning touchdown on an early fourth quarter pass plav. Offensive turnovers proved to be the difference in the outcome. Western committed eight miscues, losing lour fumbles and having lour passes intercepted, One Fumble, at the WCU 2-1. gave the Pirates field position for their first score. The Cats drew two second hall scoring opportunities when quarterback Mike l'usev fumbled at the ECU -I and was Intercepted later at the 1 (117. Waters was not surprised with the script of the season opener. "We knew we had a good, tough defensive team and we knew we were going to have problems with our offense because of injuries to our backs ami receivers and the lack of experience of the freshmen that were pressed into action." he explained. "However. I think time and a lot of hard work will solve these problems," he added, The Cats mentor handed oul plaudits to several individuals. Offensively, center Steve Dunn and guard Robbie Vannoy weir the leaders. "Our offensive line did ■ much better job than the stats indicate," noted Waters, rhe entire defensive unit drew praise and secondary performers Willie Wells. Thomas Gunn and Cookie Gary and down linemen Tv Smilh and Hobby I'eche were pointed out for special recognition. Wells blocked two ECU field goal attempts and had four open field tackles. Gunn made several spectacular hits. Gary accounted for five solo ims. Smith, although outweighed by nearly 50 pounds by his offensive Counterparts, had seven first-hit tackles and threw ECU backs for 21 yards in losses. I'eche figured in on seven slops. Don Powers, WCU's defensive coordinator, called the linebacker and end plav "consistent" and "much improved over our first game lasl season." "Our defense was the highlight of the game." said s. "They played real tough, haul nosed deli In fact, everybody both ways, played hard, lean'; fault our i-l! When asked about the offensive problems said his team "moved the ball well when we held it... thai was our problem... holding on to the ' Our offensive line did a pretty good jab. Our backs iusi did a poor job ol running with the ball and they (the backs) are going to have lo gel a lot better and much tougher, Our receivers were just mediocre, but the last ( aralina's defensive backs did a good job on our people, Mike Pusey did not have a good night. He threw some bad passes, made some had decisions and didn't check oil as well as he has in the past. Mike lias already proven he is a Rne quarterback and I am sure he w ill return to his form of last season soon. I think all the problems we have offensively can be rectified." Waters explained. Ii should be pointed oul that three ol Western's running backs-tailback Mitchell Ray and fullbacks Andv .lord an and Jeff Nor ma 11 along with wide receiver Gerald Harp all missed most ol the pre season contact sessions with injuries, Ray was playing with s pulled hamstring. Jordan saw only limited action as he had a pre game tempeialure of 102 on top of a hamstring. Norman was coming off a week long bout wuh the flu. Harp, sidelined for the last two weeks of pre -season practice with an ankle injury, was unable to make his pattern CUtS and was held off the punt kickoff return teams where he was so effective last season, rhe Cats came out of the ECU game in good physical shape w ilh only the usual bumps and bruises, "I think we will be much more effective when we get all our offensive personnel bad on the field at full speed." said Wafers. Tennessee lech, the Cats next opponent, suffered through a similiar situtation lasl Saturday evening whin iis offense turned the ball over ten times in a 20-K) loss to Nichols Slate in Thibodaux, Louisiana. The Golden Eagles rolled up 341 y.ud ot offense, but had si\ passes intercepted, lost four fumbles and had ,1 pnlit blocked in the end /one which gave Nichols a touchdown. Irch rolled over the Cats 41-21 in its' season opener lasl season which was Western's worst defeat of the season. Ihe Golden Eagles went on to post a 9-2 record and average 31.2 points per game. "We know they will be explosive on offense again and Coach (Don) Wade traditionally puts an outstanding defense on the field that is as hard-hitting as any we face." advised Waters.
